You're describing classic target panic. Joel Turner has some very detailed explanations of how to address this. I've found that the simplest solution is to separate aiming from your expansion and/or release sequence. In the ShotIQ method, it's the "here we go" moment. For me, string walking, it's when I shift my focus from the target to the point of the arrow, which I watch move towards me for expansion. If I see it move forward, I let down. When it stops, I release.
Your counts are very fast. Look at the time stamps. It's barely a second from when you actually anchor to when you release. It was significantly longer when you counted out loud.

You have made another skillful contribution to archers like me striving to improve accuracy and consistency. Thank you for your efforts in making this video. Reading all the comments added significant value to your efforts as well. And “flippin flippers” as delivered by you is endearing beyond description! I don’t have the specific shot cycle wisdom to share as delivered in almost all the comments your video enlisted but it strikes me that getting all the shot cycle mechanics correct is like what a little league coach told me was hitting the ball at the center of percussion. When this is accomplished there is no feeling of effort in the swing and no feeling that the ball has been struck but essentially all the energy of the bat is transferred to the ball and home runs happen. I think there is a similar thing in golf where the sound of club hitting the ball is a subdued “click” rather than the sound of a large oak tree being smacked with a piece of bamboo, a sound I’m most familiar with. So hopefully knowing that your body-mind is capable of delivering a “center of percussion type” shot cycle can help you relax be seduced into achieving it more and more often. Thanks again for your videos. I find them helpful and delightful!

I had exactly the same problems with my anchor 😕 Extreme Target Panic ! 🥺 I've managed to beat it after 4 hard years. I use to practice in the dark with my eyes closed for a few weeks and as if by magic my draw and anchor returned. 🙂 The only problem after that is everything else fell apart ! It's like starting over again, every shot was going over due to the extra power but now everything is slowly coming together. I found you can only make one change at a time, but most importantly of all never give up !
I always enjoy the honesty of your videos. I hope you work it all out soon.
    Good luck. 👍

I dunno. I shoot instinctively and I get magical patches and duff ones. But then if I focus on what I think is going wrong then something else goes awry. There isn't s 'best way' to shoot, it's just what your body gets the hang of. Just shoot without overanylising... Eventually you get there, but don't fiddle with it!

There isn't a "best" way to shoot, but there are certainly ways that are worse than others. The goal is consistency, so "magical" and "duff" aren't really what you're looking for.

You are definitely in the early stages of target panic and as you say it does detract from enjoyment of the sport - that can get so extreme it leads you to give up. The good thing is you've recognised it early and are going back to basics. I've had severe TP for years and done everything from Joel T to hypnotherapy to try and fix it. I can now manage full draw and anchor but aiming down is an almighty task. I hope you manage to nip TP in the bud.

If I were to make a suggestion I'd say there is still much room for you to put your elbow behing your back. And keeping your shoulders low would probably help. You raise both of them when you draw the bow.
This might help preventing all that chaotic movement after you loose an arrow and keep everything more consistent.

You need to hold, get into your aim, focus on the execution, & let down over & over. Now the hard part keep doing it & varying the distance. Get to 30 yards with no hiccups, then go back to 5 yards, hold 2 shots let down, then shoot one 1 arrow. No cheating & work your way back to 30 yards. You have to set your aim, then focus on the execution or your panic will return as soon as you try a target. Don’t worry about release until you have complete control then go to Jake Kaminsky’s channel & learn from him. I mean no disrespect but your a mess. Get your panic under control first then work on the steps in a proper shot sequence. It will take about 8 months to a year to build a proper shot sequence but you’ll have repeatable accuracy.

You really do need to draw longer, your elbow is well out to the left, if you can concentrate on getting that elbow back further and in line with the arrow shaft and your back muscles and bones working together locking in that straight line to the target I think you will find much improvement in accuracy and consistency 👍. Yes your brain and body will try and mess you up but persevere and you will eliminate much of those flippin flippers moments. You might end up needing longer and stiffer arrows eventually too with a longer and solider draw. Good luck Flea in your endeavours to improve as ive had all the problems your experiencing. Work on that draw and anchor solidity first and if you have a lower poundage bow try it on that first to find where full alignment occurs 👌. Also check out Jake Kaminski's videos on form training, very informative especially his full draw and hold exercises vid👍.

I reached the point where I wanted to improve, so started working on technique. I changed to barebow, so i had definite points I could use to check everything.
I also changed anchor point, from corner of mouth, to the tooth behind my canine. It doesn't stretch like the corner of the mouth. So i gained consistency on draw length.
After touching the tooth, I bring the base of my thumb into my cheek. It only take a second or so, but it guarantees my anchor remains for at least some time, as I'm still doing another process, so the mind knows I haven't finished everything, ready for release.
Maybe some aspect of that might help.
    Good luck. Stick at it.
Like my dad said, "the more effort you put into something, the more you get out of it".

Hi! Just discovered your channel, great video! I need to check out the rest of your videos. I'm curious how you are positioning your feet and also how you breathe in relation to your release. I always thought I'd get to wobbly if I held the drawn recurve bow too long & I try to release after 1-2 seconds.
