My favourite thing about the farting butt jokes (apart from an old fashioned juvenile laugh) is that in Tom’s vlogs leading up to that asdfmovie he repeatedly mentioned that the concept was silly and people would probably hate the jokes, and once the episode released the response was immediately overwhelmingly negative. He knew no one would like it, he very quickly regretted it, but the idea made him laugh once and he decided “fuck it” and put it in. Truly the farting butt is the ultimate symbol of artistic integrity.
What he didn't analyze are the order in the appear can certainly make a difference. As he stated before, sketches where nothing unexpected happened didn't perform so well. However in a full asdfmovie where every clip before something random happened, putting in a video where nothing unexpected happened can make a huge difference to keep the viewers on the toes. So was the butt jokes good or bad for the entire video over all, even though the standalone clips wasn't very liked? Aaaand... thats a little bit harder to test.
I did like the effectively Committee built sketch, but each sketch loses something when watched in isolation. ADSF Movie works so well as it just keeps you riding the funny train all the way to the station
It was actually funny and OH HEY TOM SCOTT NICE. Honestly though, I think it's only funny because of the zoom in on the dogs face. That's what makes the sketch.
Just added the spreadsheet with all the data and results into the video description so you can check that out if you're an aspiring data analyst, number nerd, or just curious x
Honestly the data was fascinating, and the resulting joke made me laugh, even knowing exactly which components it would utilize. Can’t believe the first asdf movie came out in 2008 (!!!)... now I feel old. Thanks for the laughs and the nerdy data, Tom. Didn’t know how much I wanted this video. 😁
Honestly my favorites are all the ones you've musically backed. I unironically listen to "Everybody do the Flop" and the opening themes in my normal music playlist all the time. You're amazing!
My favourite sketch is probably the “You know who’s gay? Us.” It is unexpected in a certain way, has reoccurring characters and brings joy. Though I have to say the perfect joke was also very good indeed.

can we all just agree that Tom Scott was the perfect contender to be voicing the 'falling on a guy-speaking to a dog-committing suicide-man' simply because of the analytical nature of this video?
I am strangely fascinated by the fact that Tom went through the effort to find everything in this series related to kinks. Imagine realizing that for the last 12 years, you've been unknowingly stimulating it for other people.
Hmmm. I really want to see if I can find out what every single occurrence of an asdfkinky, but: 1. I’d have to use Incognito Mode for sure 2. I want to protect the little innocence I have left 3. It’d take too fucking long
Honestly, it's not surprising. _ANYTHING_ can potentially be a kink, really. There's actually a guy out there who gets off to rich white suburban women buying entire truckloads of wonder bread, he's actually kind of infamous on multiple art sites for commissioning art of that.
What if that's his mother, and that she died from her own powers? And that kid turns out immortal? And that he lives alone all the time suffering from his own powers? And then he learned to control his powers and the became evil?
Pie flavour was a standing joke in my school. "Die potato!" "Not today!" Was probably among the best in my opinion but it needed the context of the potato having died a couple of times already. Oh, and Desmond the moon bear of course.
I somehow acquired the phrase "die potato" from my friends before ever seeing the clip, and still to this day will use it whenever killing bugs or the like.
When I was in middle school my family didn't have Internet so I thought the (seemingly) random shit my friends often said was stuff they made up. Then I saw these sketches for the first time on my TikTok feed about a week ago and realized that all the "random" shit they were saying back then was actually mostly asdfmovie references. "Desmond the Moon Bear" is what unlocked that memory for me, since that was the most popular sketch at my school.
The joke isn't funny enough for TomSka to get away with using it more than once (maybe twice). If FB1 and FB3 were left at the drawing board, I don't think they would be as bad as they are because FB2 and FB4 contain at least somewhat funny wordplay, but FB1 both was a bad attempt at a joke that came too far out of left field and was the one to set the precedent that would stick in people's minds due to being the first of the four. As a result, the entire tetralogy was brought down with it. FB3 somehow being even worse than FB1 didn't help either.
I would definitely argue that what makes an asdf joke "good" is honestly how well it works itself in culturally. I think that both neatly explains why newer jokes didn't perform as well, but it also reflects the general lexicalisation of the popular jokes. A common element of them is that they're simple, short-hand phrases that work well when directly quoting or referencing the series as an in-joke with other people who've seen it, and i think that very strongly reflects the overall cultural place that asdfmovie has.
"mugged" gets quoted *constantly* by me and my friends. Basically any time someone subverts a statement. "Are you going to the store?" "No, you are." "Ah! How does that even work!?"
Throughout his entire explanation of the different types of subversion of expectations, I kept wondering whether or not he was showing clips that gave examples, or he would allow the clip to play and then explain it. And I think that's a testament to what works about ASDF movies. It's a blend of several different subversions. Not just relying on one

I personally like the one where the mom says, “Jimmy, take out the dog,” and the son says “yes mother,” before shooting the poor dog. And then the mom says “for a walk, Jimmy.”
My favorite would probably be the sketch where Jimmy kills the dog. I know, I am horrible. But that was before 13, where I was introduced to...well, 13 just came out, so I should let you watch it, but it has a ball in it.
I had honestly thought he just wasted away Also I can disprove Tom's reasoning because that little girl could not place those bones exactly in the same place as Desmond was standing upright

I think my favorite asdfmovie joke/sketch will be the original "everybody do the flop". The first time I saw it, all those years ago, I laughed so hard I was in genuine tears. it was so quick, so unexpected, and the dead silent pause after everyone faceplanted into the ground was ideal humor to me at the time. Same with "Play that one." I think they resonate because the voices make them memorable, which is why "Standing Up School" is also high. I did the website voting for at least 30 minutes total, and looking back I wonder how the medium of viewing the candidates (a title and a short gif) influenced the votes, as compared to watching/listening to full clips.

My fav is the one where there looking for the baby and the wife suggests that he might have gotten outside and the wife is actually the baby.
Ok, that perfect joke asdf was actually pretty good, not gonna lie.
Same feels here. It's just.... P E R F E C T !
Yeah it’s actually kind of surprising how good it was.
It would definitely be in my top 10
Was it my favorite? No, but it was however definitely very asdfmovie.
Tom Scott completed it
Are we just gonna skip over the fact Tom has confirmed that Desmond did not die on the moon of natural causes?

I think my favorite asdfmovie joke/sketch will be the original "everybody do the flop". The first time I saw it, all those years ago, I laughed so hard I was in genuine tears. it was so quick, so unexpected, and the dead silent pause after everyone faceplanted into the ground was ideal humor to me at the time. And to this day every time I see the original "everybody do the flop", I at least crack an amused smile
“If the tree is alive then he’s not dead”
Alright. Can’t argue with that very well.
Then argue with it poorly.
My favorite jokes were the "you know who's gay?" jokes that lead up to the reveal that they were getting married

The voice acting in "Jimmy, take out the dog" is just 10/10.
