I feel sorry for you that this was your first Halloween movie watching. I didn’t hate this, but watching the original first was a special experience. I haven’t really liked any Halloween movie again since H20. I do however enjoyed the 2018 version I guess the most out of Resurrection, and Zombie’s double Halloween movies.
I consider this the trailer trash Myers era, too violent, too vulgar, but I’m one of the few who liked Zombie’s Halloween 2 compared to the first one. Maybe because it seemed like a newer idea, and I really hated that young Myers kid from the first one.

I respect what Zombie did with his interpretation of Halloween, but I love the concept of Michael Myers being a form of evil with no explanation, like the Joker in The Dark Knight, he’s a man who just wants to watch the world burn, he’s given no backstory, only up to the viewer’s opinion, Michael Myers was created as an incarnation of evil, that’s it, nothing else, which I personally find more frightening. He’s evil because he’s evil, not because of a rough upbringing.

Finally rewatched the theatrical cut for the first time in 14 years and I remembered why I liked the movie on initial watch. I think it's a pretty good introduction to a humanized version of Myers and I actually felt bad for him. I liked the explanation of the obsession with masks too. And there was a good variety of kills too. Annie's assault is pretty gut wrenching because she ends up covered in blood but you have no idea what Michael did to her, only that it paralyzed her where she couldn't even talk. And I love endings where Michael is definitively killed, and I marked out when Laurie pulled the trigger and the blood splattered on her face and she was screaming. I also liked that maybe Michael was helping Laure aim the gun too, because he was probably just too tired and knew he had no reason to live.

I like Rob Zombie’s take on it. It was one of the first times we got to see Michael Myers be brutal (unlike the other previous films, they didn’t show him being brutal with his kills, just sort implying it). We got a backstory on why Michael is the way he is. He came from a “bad home” where violence was common in his home. It took a child who seemed to be good kid but his environment broke him and he found an outlet of his own, more violence. More graphic than what he was experiencing. He wanted to hurt those that hurt him and then losing his mom (who he loved so much) was his breaking point. Once she died, he lost what little joy he had in life left. He became a shell of man with nothing to live for except his baby sister Boo. He had a bond with her and that what was left of the what made him happy as a kid. Once she rejected him (not knowing that was her actual brother) and after knowing he attacked her friends, he was the caused of her being traumatized, just like their mother was by his actions.

I thought Daeg Faerch played young Michael pretty well, he could look quite normal but also kind of sinister.

You nailed right on the head. When Debra Dies, Michael Myers Died and The Shape/The Boogeyman is born. When i saw this movie i was 23 and already have been invested in the series for 16 years at that point. That was one of the 1st things i thought of, cause i was extremely close to my Mom and their relationship just resonated with me. Also the "Ugliness" Michael says of Himself, is that evil growing inside of him, cause whenever he kills, he is wearing the mask and he feels like he can maybe hide it from the world. The rage that Loomis would talk about, was physically worn on Michael's face, especially after Mikey kills the Nurse and His Mom lifts the mask off his face and he is clearly in a Raging Demonic Episode. This was a great representation of him turning into the Evil he is described as being.

Rob Zombie's version was the absolute worse.
He reduced Michael's motivation to being from a dysfunctional family. He moved about like Leather-Face, as oppose to the ghostly sleepwalking type boogieman. I guess we could appreciate the visuals, like the mask and the poster. It had good parts, but on a whole it was crappy. It felt like it was geared specifically for a Rob Zombie audience. Rob Zombie's other movies were classics, but HALLOWEEN was Zombie out of his lane.
He's trying to turn a mystery into a demystified common serial killer. HALLOWEEN was a project for someone who understands how to create an unseen, stalking mysterious dreadnought that moved in and out of the shadows. Zombie's films had killers who were real humans, but very, very twisted. Thats what Zombie's Michael seemed like, versus being a supernatural force of nature. In fact, "House of 1000 corpses" would have worked as the soundtrack for Zombie's M.MYERS. And an element that was ignored in most of the sequels was Michael's eyes. Not seeing his eyes, but just darkness, added to his mystery. I'm sure RZ had fun making this movie. When regular hardcore HALLOWEEN fans understand who RZ is, then it kind of becomes predictable and just another dark-side of humanity ride. Then its appreciated for just what it is without comparing it to the original. I guess next, they'll let ICE-CUBE make a remake, or better yet JORDAN PEELE.

I 100% enjoyed this movie on its own. Though I HATE the controversial scene that is in the Unrated Directors cut. It’s not only awful it’s also badly acted. (Michael doesn’t mind what’s going on but once they touch his mask is when he decides to act?)
I love all the other additional scenes! But I much prefer the guards vs Michael break out out scene. It paints a better picture of the security of Smiths Grove while showcasing the kind of brutality that awaits Haddonfield on Halloween day. But otherwise I find this film a complete Greek tragedy. I hate RZH2. I cannot defend it. Like Halloween 3 it’s a Halloween film made for people who just wants anything BUT a Halloween film with Myers. (The “Die!” Scene should be the obvious clue). Great if anyone enjoys them but I love Halloween II, Halloween 4, H20, and Halloween 2018 so much. Halloween 6 theatrical cut is the most brutal Michael and has some of the best visual effects in terms of kills that it’s just a fun 90s fan fiction that I’ll never buy into. Plus I love the mask. Anyways. I just enjoy the Myers centered stories a lot more. I love slashers! I don’t care about Mumbo Jumbo magic or psychic connections. But Rob Zombies’ Halloween 1 is an absolute misunderstood Greek tragedy and I love it for that aspect.

You should watch the theatrical cut of RZ Halloween 2. Sounds like you just watched the directors cut. Don't get me wrong, the theatrical cut still has a lot of thing that should be changed. But I do think in a lot of ways, the 2 cuts are different movies. For example, the 2 cuts end differently. They have a different ending. I won't spoil anything about the plot but I will say the "DIE!!!" scene isn't even in the theatrical cut. The theatrical cut also cuts out several of the scenes where Laurie is being an unbearable jerk. I think shes actually a likeable character in the theatrical cut. Loomis still sucks in the theatrical, but hes also toned down in the theatrical. Some of his really mean scenes of dialog are cut from the movie. He was still ruined as a character but isnt as bad as in the director's cut. I also hated the directors cut but I am honestly kind of a fan of the theatrical. I recommend you give it a shot, although just because I liked it doesn't guarantee you will like the theatrical cut either. But I do think its worth giving a shot.

Rob Zombies Halloween is what made me into a Michael myers fan. I never cared for myers before. Never seen any of the original movies. Always thought he was sort of boring. And then saw Robs version and got hooked on the character. Can’t wait for Halloween Kills

In my opinion, I think this movie I one gigantic disappointing travesty. I could talk hours on how much I loathe this film, but if others grew up with it and gives them nostalgia. That's all we really need

She isnt the worst actress in these films, but there's a reason she's only ever in his movies and no other Hollywood projects... just sayinggggg lol
