I've never got that type of feeling, listening to Deep Purple's music, but, I do respect your opinion. I saw these guys in concert with Wishbone Ash in the early '70's. It took place in a relatively small concert hall that sat about 3,200 people. Both bands were absolutely incredible and one of the best concerts I've ever seen. The entire Demons and Wizards is a fantastic album. One song you must, you must, you must do is Phoenix by Wishbone Ash off of their debut album.

When I was a kid (born in 70) my dad had ALL their albums, so I love them, and hearing them makes me feel like I'm home! To this day when we get to visit, we play old Uriah Heep. My favorite has always been Blind Eye, and dad's favorite is Poet's Justice. I love your reactions and how thorough you guys always are, taking your time with each song and pointing out all elements while having an open mind to music from way before your time. If there is interest in going with a more direct 1970s rock sound from a British band, Bad Company might be a choice. Song options include: "Bad Company," "Can't Get Enough," "Feel Like Makin' Love," "Shooting Star," and "Rock and Roll Fantasy" as all recognizable hits. For those that may not be aware, the band that would become Badfinger auditioned in front of The Beatles for that band's Apple Recods and after The Beatles, Badfinger was reportedly the 2nd act signed to the label. There is an urban (musical) legend that some music fans of the time, as Badfinger was gaining popularity and due to their close relationships with The Beatles (who were in the midst of their breakup but still individually continued to work with Badfinger), could possibly be The Beatles recording under a different name. During Badfinger's peak, the group had 4 top 10 hits in the US and 3 top 10 hits in the UK during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their most recognizable songs might include: "Come and Get It" (written by Paul McCartney), "No Matter What," "Day After Day" (performed on and produced by George Harrison), and "Baby Blue" (produced by the successful American artist Todd Rundgren; This song was significantly featured in the series finale of "Breaking Bad," which Nick may be a fan of if his choice of t-shirts in earlier reactions is any indication). I don't know if anyone talked about this in these comments but this song is about a guy who is rejoicing because he has just put his faith in Jesus and he is overjoyed in the happiness he has found. That is what Uriah Heep was all about, believe it or not!

Guys, what you need to try and remember and appreciate is while we were growing up with all these amazing bands, that each and every one were completely new sounds to us. We were inundated with a barrage of some of the greatest music of all time. We'd catch these bands on the radio and then explore them by buying albums and going to their concerts. As a generation we matured musically with each band on each of their new releases. It became somewhat of a friendly contest to see who could discover the newest up and coming hot band and introduce them to our crowd of friends. When they say it was the time of "sex, drugs and rock and roll" accept it as gospel.
David Byron was a very talented vocalist--had his own style but was right up there with Ian Gillan and Robert Plant at the time. You can hear him shine in "July Morning" and "Circle of Hands". One of my favorites, a longer song with a section highlighting Mick Box's guitar and Lee Kerslake's drumming, is "The Magician's Birthday". Kerslake was a top drummer and, I believe, was in Ozzie Osborne's first solo band. "Stealin'" is well worth a listen as are many others.
I have heard this before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dog Day Afternoon, so it wasn’t from there. But I do like it. It has a great classic rock feel to it along the lines of some Deep Purple or Grand Funk Railroad songs I’ve heard. And I agree - MUCH better than the first one you played.
I always took this to be a Christian song; same with "Stealin'," which by the way you should definitely listen to because that's a much better song than this. ("Easy Livin'" is just okay for me.) Also definitely listen to "The Wizard" and "That's The Way That It Is," which was done nearly a decade later with their third lead singer. (R.I.P. original lead singer David Byron.🌹)
