The reason Uriah Heep didn't go on to be more popular was because the heart and soul of David Byron couldn't be replaced. After David Heep was just another pretty good roc k band.

The whole album is magical. I'll never forget when I first heard it. A haunting and yet beautiful album. When Mick Box kicks in his wah wah for the solos on this song I was immediately transfixed. That and the amazing voice of David Byron. For me, he is the greatest singer I ever heard. The song High Priestess from this album is a wall-to-wall guitar extravaganza.

These sixteen minutes of "Salisbury" go by very quickly and the marriage of the band and the orchestra works really well in this case !
Yes, the orchestra is very present but I find that it does not predominate over Uriah Heep because the mix is very well balanced.
And not to spoil anything, the mix of musical genres is perfect (Prog rock, Hard rock, Jazz and even a hint of psychedelia in it). A great epic !

As a keyboard player, sometimes I listen for the expressiveness in the other instruments.
THIS SONG IS REALLY ABOUT A MASSIVE 3-ROUND GUITAR SOLO, very similar to the way guitar solos build over multiple rounds in the Allman Brothers "Stormy Monday" (Fillmore East version).
Thematically, the solos probably represent his *memory* of the best times in their relationship, with his memories colored by his loss of her.
At 7:58 (in original song, 9:08 in this Review) Listen to the use of wah-wah on the guitar, while the High Energy bass and organ go back and forth - really masterful use of wah-wah phrasing and volume pedal to take the attack off the notes - what you call the jazzy part.
The last third of the song (11:15, but at 12:25 in this Review) is three "rounds" of guitar solos (each followed by chorus) where each builds on the next. Listen to the opening notes of each round.
    - Round #1 - perfect wah and bend.
    - Round #2 (12:08, but 13:18 in this Review) - development from #1 with a wah, then flying hammer-ons and a great ending ... but wait there's more.
    - Round #3 (13:00, but 14:10 in this review) - a NASTY slow bend on G string to a fretted B string, and sustained big bends.
Then after the chorus we're wrapping up with very prog-ish tutti notes that Spinal Tap made fun of. Speaking of parodies, you'll see these tutti notes (everyone doubling the same note) using the musical motif from the 1960s Ajax laundry detergent commercial ("Stronger Than Dirt"), just like The Doors used the Stronger Than Dirt motif as the final notes of Touch Me. It's hard to explain in today's culture that back in the 1960s, we all had common national and international experiences from watching the same programs and ads on TV, so the Stronger Than Dirt motif was a very catchy jingle and cultural reference. Here's the link to The Doors "Touch Me" ("www.quora.com/Why-does-Jim-Morrison-say-stronger-than-dirt-at-the-end-of-Love-her-Madly") and one of the Ajax ads ("ruclips.net/video/EFZK5VkQes4/видео.html"). You'll hear this motif in Salisbury.
Go back and listen to that 3-round guitar solo!

A very fine track indeed.

As I remember it. As with Yes, the TV program Top of the Pops experimented with playing this as an album track where the one song took up a whole program. Following day I was straight down the record shop and bought this LP. The cover version I still have is as shown with the Chieftain Tank. 1971 and College years played this in one of the social classes when we were asked to bring in an album. I absolutely love this track and a great album. What is so special for me is this music period circa 1967 -1975 so much was happening and developing this track and album with the sound it could have only been released in 1971, not before or after.

Great review! This song and the whole album was my favourite one before I started to listen to ELP and Yes. It's a shame Heep didn't go more towards prog because they really had the potential.
One contemporary band that has a lot of same elements is Norwegian Motorpsycho. Their latest album The One Is All (2020) is about the best prog album of the 10's! Two songs that should get your attention are the title track or Dreams of Fancy. But the real jewl of the album is N.O.X. 1-5 that has to be listened as one piece of music. I do believe there are many of us who would be more than glad if you took this album to your review list.

I don't like to talk about artists as "the Best" because there is no best but in some cases I think that noone does things better. And this is what I think about David Byron as a rock singer. Not only that he has a wide range, I don't know anyone who uses his voice more diverse from smooth to hard, from low to loud and back and forth and so on. It is great articulation and control in every single moment. And though he used this diverseness in this song extensively there are still a lot of other songs where he used even more. One of the songs I see as one of the best sung ever imho is on their first album. It is "Come away Melinda". Wonderful, really wonderful.
Another remarkable part of their music is the organ sound that is a little bit tamed on this song. But again oin their first album the opener "Gypsy" has one of the nastiest organ sounds ever. Gypsy is a must know in another way and of course it is David Byron. He found a way to sing that no other did before and I don't know another singer who did what he did until now. And if someone would try it would probably sound ridiculously copied.
The album "Salisbury" contains 5 other gems including their best known "Lady in Black" that has an opposite concept to "Salisbury". It has only 2 chords, no solo, just simple and I have heard that sometimes the lyrics have been used in Germany by some English teachers. Though it is a great song it is one of the songs that got so much airplay that it was a little bit too much.( Shares the fate of "Smoke on the Water".)
The other 4 songs are very different from each other and I like all of them. This diversity makes "Salisbury" my favorite Uriah Heep album but "Demons and Wizards" comes rather close and "Look at Yourself" is not far away, too.

My favourite Heep album and this song, coming last, is of course the climax. The rest of the album doesn't feature the orchestra, but it is well worth checking out. At the time this was released quite a few bands were experimenting with long epics and orchestras, and I think this is one of the best at integrating orchestra and band. Thanks for doing this Justin, I really enjoyed your review, not least for the shoutout to Paul Newton's base.

While accomplishing so much on this album and coming off their great first album, I personally still think their third try, "Look at Yourself" was their apex. They reached a level of maturity that blew me away. With the addition of Ian Clarke on drums (his only album with the band) everybody stepped up and performed brilliantly. The song writing throughout the album was top. I still love this, though. Please don't get me wrong.

Just a personal observation: It always seemed to me that Heep was battling Deep Purple (Mk 2) for dominance in the 5-man-group formation. Totally different sound and approach but similar at the same time. Both are favorites and I can attest to both bands' live performances (having seen them both multiple times back in the day) being loud, rocking and true to the recorded music while fluid enough to expound on the structure, i.e. improvisation. Salisbury is some of Heep's best work. Good notice about how group and orchestra working "on top of each other." Deep Purple's Concerto For Group and Orchestra was more of a trade-off or battle between the two while Salisbury merges the two together.

LOVE BOTH BANDS, YET THE HEEP BETTER. THE EARLY DEEP PURPLE WAS GREAT WITH THEIR FIRST VOCALIST (ROD EVANS), WHO RECOMMENDED A BALLAD VERSION OF THE BEATLES SONG HELP WAS HIRED. SHADES O F PURPLE HAD OTHER GREAT SONGS, HELP, ANTHEM, ALSO COVERING THE IKE & TINA TURNER'S RIVER DEEP MOUNTAIN HIGH, THEN HE GOT DUMPED.
IAN GILLIAN IS THE BEST REMEMBERED AND I ADMIT IAN'S INCREDIBLE VOICE WAS QUITE REMARKABLE.
THE GREAT THING HOWEVER CONCERNING URIAH HEEP WAS THAT IT HAD TWO VOALISTS IN DAVID BYRON AND KEN HENSLEY, WITH HENSLEY PAVING THE ROADWAY OF LYRIC AND MUSIC FOR THE BAND'S MUSIC HISTORY.
THEY WERE ROCK , ACOUSTIC, FANTASY, AND IF YOU REALLY LISTEN, GOSPEL. KEN WAS A CHRISTIAN , AND I BELIEVE HIS SONGS LIKE CIRCLE OF HANDS, EASY LIVING, AND OTHERS ATTEST TO THE BATTLE OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS.
THEIR MAJOR ALBUMS ALL INCLUDED THE SAME MEMBERS, BYON, HENSLEY, BOX, THAIR, AND KERSLAKE. SO VERY GIFTED. THANKS FOR SHARING.

Glad this song got a visit - back in the early 70s, the radio DJ at the progressive rock station would use this as the 20 minute music slot - on many occasions, too. Like the detailed analysis, too. The only other track that got much airplay was "Lady In Black", partly because of the hook in the chorus. It's interesting how that large brass orchestra and chorus were only used in the album's title track! David Byron's towering voice really worked well to rise about all that orchestration. Back in the 80s, I heard him do an FM radio show in the St. Louis area - he talked about his bout with the bottle the previous night, a precursor to his later passing in 1985.

IIRC, Salisbury Plain is home to both a major military training area and Stonehenge (all though there are many less famous stone henges). Locally Salisbury House (pronounced Sals berry) is a restaurant chain (oddly Burton Cummings of the Guess Who is a shareholder). I have no idea if members of Uriah Heap ever ate there.
The organ and the way the brass and winds are used really date this. Not in a bad way. Just it is a sound that hasn't been used since that era (to my knowledge). I don't know how to explain what I mean about the winds and brass but I can hear it. I wonder how much was inspired by Blood Sweat and Tears.
This was the first of Uriah Heap that I can remember hearing other than the Demons and Wizards album (which I loved at the time). I would have loved this.
    Good song. Great review.
p.s. if you do polls, have you decided how to set them up? i.e. Themed by nation/genre/holiday? How ever you set it up, I look forward to it.

This was at the dawn of hard rock where the hammond organ played an important role. Same with early Deep Purple. Not saying that later Heep or Purple were in any way not equal good but different like all band who progresses. Nice one! I think, at this time, Uriah Heep was treading a path between heavy metal, a la Black Sabbath, and something more proggy and the band was uncertain which way to go. This certainly is the most proggy of the tracks on the album. Some of the other tracks have not withstood the test of time quite so well and put me in mind of Spinal Tap. The opening track, High Priestess, for example, has high falsetto voices which I now find very difficult to take seriously. Nevertheless, this was a standout album from the band and a high point for 1971.

Remember back then Uriah Heep was kind of a poor man's Deep Purple for me, however, their early output was way more colorful. Maybe it's time to rediscover them, this one is way better than I remembered. The orchestral sound was in fashion back in the early 70s, every rock band did at least one album with classical sounding stuff on it, including The Nice (Keith Emerson's early band, you should totally check them out), Deep Purple did their Concerto, some of the early Yes songs had an orchestra etc etc.

Congrats on 13K Cannot wait to hear views on Topograhic Oceans. A while ago you played Roxy Music. I left a note saying the song wasn't what they were originally about. "IF THERE IS SOMETHING" is. It is Roxy at their most genius best and it is over 6 1/2 minutes long. Please listen and love.

The lyrics make Salisbury one of the greatest romantic songs ever. For me, having had a beautiful lover who disappeared - the best ever. He's a guy and after making love to a beauty he falls like he's never fallen before. Best sex ever. But she finds someone new. That leaves him alone although he knew the affair wouldn't last. He gets over it. He reminisces about what he'd do if he saw her again. Like maybe give her a rhyme he was going to send to her. He'll always have and will never forget the memories from their time spent together in Salisbury UK.

One that popped up the other day was Que Sera Sera (yes the Doris Day song) done by Sly and the Family Stone. It’s incredible. Definitely the good side of technology being able to find and listen to great music.

Hi Justin. Time for tales ! I can't wait ;-D
I wanted to talk about Nina Hagen. In case you plan to come back to her please avoid her later stuff. The 2 first albums are essential, what comes after is weaker, maybe interesting but weaker. Her 2 first albums were done with the musicians from Lokomotive Kreuzberg (they went into another band : Spliff, after Nina left them), and they were great musicians. The mix between Nina's madness and vocal talent and their own talents and sense of composition was extraordinary. So if you come back to her go to her second album and start with African Reggae, although the whole album is fabulous.

Hi, Justin. Dave from London in The Depths of Winter. This song is new to me too, but I love your reaction. I was into a lot of the early 70s rock bands, but the only Heep album I knew was Look at Yourself. This is a great mix of rock, jazz, big band, with a smattering of musical theatre. Rocking Hammond and guitar breaks. Agree that the orchestration is bit over the top, but this was very much of the time (Strawbs, Barclay James Harvest, Procol Harum (over) indulged as well, and Deep Purple had their Concerto for Group and Orchestra).
