  • This Stihl 041 Farm Boss had not run in years. I cleaned the carburetor, replaced the fuel and pulse lines, new gaskets, spark plug wire repair, and finally sharpened the chain.

Great job man! I have inherited one of these with a missing pull chord handle. I have replaced that and tinkered with it some. The throttle and choke are frozen up and the gas cap is stuck like I've never seen anything stuck.
So you got lucky it did not have an air leak in the crank seals. Of course you no doubt would have found the leak and replaced them!

I got an 1977 041 FB at a garage sale and got it running like a scalded dog. I did notice that when I switched to the NGK the original spark plug boot like to slip off because the Bosch ceramic was larger. It was coming off when cutting so I switched back to the Bosch. Need to get a carb kit, but pretty cool to still slice through 30” hardwood with a 45 year old beast.

Great vidya bud. Got my ol' farm boss to pop. She's a lil heavy of the sauce tho i think cause i can't keep'r goin. The high/low was tuned with a carb dirty'r then an alley whoor so now that it's clean she's just drown'n. Wish a feller knew how'da hell to adjust the stuff rite.....

Set your idle to stay running.
Turn the L screw in and out to find the pitch sound changes.
Adjust to the middle of that range and maybe a hair to the rich side for a fast throttle response when the trigger is squeezed.
For the H screw(needle valve), squeeze the trigger for wide open throttle and adjust the screw in or out to find the smoothest sound/ speed.
Now, check your Idle and see if you can slow it down some more. Find the sweet spot of smooth running without turning the chain.
      You're done!

Thanks for the video! Just snagged a 041AV SUPER for $50 on marketplace. It runs but doesn't like to stay running once warm lol. So going to do what you did here and tear it all down.

Thanks, very helpful. My non-running 041FB is one of my winter projects. I found that brake cleaner destroys plastic, carb cleaner does not. Are the two missing screws next to the spark plug needed? PaulL

That top cover is marked 50:1, but all the info I have seen indicates that all old Stihl chainsaws use a 40:1 mix.

Everything I can find on old Stihl's, says the mix should be 40:1 for all old Stihl chainsaws and that is what I run in my 041.

I have a MS310, the old 041 sounds better. I'm sure it's because of Big Brother emissions crap
