The arrow on piston faces the exhaust on two strokes my friend. You figured it out though with pure common sense! I have inherited one of these saws from my Pa in law and look forward to getting it running. He had discarded it to his scrap metal bin with a roof over it for years after the pull handle broke. The throttle and choke were froze up. I have the choke moving freely now and the throttle moving some but not easily and its firing so shouldn't be too long before I hear it at least run.😀
I have that identical saw all original and it works great still after 50+ years. Looks like you have a dull chain it should zip thru that log much faster. One of the best saws they ever made. Get the Stihl hand sharpener it works great...fast and easy to use..
I have the same chain saw. My immediate thought when you started cutting was that the chain is not near as sharp as the one I have. My 041AV is 40 years old this month and KICK tail! It would have cut through that wood noticeably faster. IMHO
Good video, owned a 041AV myself, I found it to be a great saw, I think after all the work you did with rebuilding it that sharpening the chain would have been a part of the process before doing the test cut. When I sold mine I had quite a few guys fighting over it...I should never have sold it...
I have a O 41AV, it is rated 5 hp and with a sharp chain it is faster than my new Ms362 (4.69 hp), My O 41 AV will cut that log much faster and take out really big wood chips. My saw has had a history of blowing the carb gasket. I beat it by using gaskets and RTV gasket maker. Powerful fast old school saw. I am the original owner. You should get a new chain and keep it sharp. Nice video thanks for making it. "Also cutting without a chain saw helmet and face shield ear protection, gloves and no chain saw chaps with tennis shoes is really a very dangerous way to run a saw. The O 41 AV is powerful and can kick back if the wrong part or the tip contacts wood or the bar get bound in the cut.
Need to rebuild mine now.. everyone saying sharpen chain it the bar has burr on it take flat file to it so it doesn't get hung up as your cutting good👍
Mine has 76 psi compression. The only way I could make it run for even a little was to dump a tiny bit of motor oil in the cylinder. It ran a few times until all the motor all was gone. So far I have cleaned the tank, replaced the tank grommet and filter, cleaned the carb and put in a new plug.
Great video . I’m re building an 048 av which is challenging ! . As has been said learn to sharpen your chain then that saw will fly . Will cut at least twice as fast with a sharp chain 👍
Thanks! I have an 041 that is not running well. I've done a carburetor rebuild but never looked at piston stuff. I have courage now. I may have cooked mine too. Never thought about cleaning it....duh. BTW, a Farmboss with a sharp chain is a great saw.
I use regular octane fuel and add Sta-Bil w/ octane boost....works great, lasts a long time. One thing many people forget is that oil can slowly separate from gasoline....shake your stuff up B4 filling tank, and B4 starting it
Ola amigo tudo bem tenho uma mas nao estou conseguindo a polca do virabrequim q trava o volante voce saberia a rosca ?, medimos aqui e deu rosca 0.90 seria isso mesmo?
Well done :) worth mentioning that you’re very lean on the L screw and still lean on the H screw. Running it like this can lead to seizure. Have a look on RUclips for tuning videos.
Sweet video. I’d advise to not beat the piston wrist pin out, unless the rod is supported. Other than good video my old man has this saw. Love it! I love my old 10-10 Mcculloch. The vintage stuff last forever.
Unless that wood is stone-hard, I cannot say I'm impressed. Recently I bought a Stihl 041 AV Electronic Quickstop, that seller listed as a working saw. But when it came guess what? Electronic Ignition module was faulty. So I was lucky to find a points ignition the same day and now the saw runs great! Today I have an intention to test it in wood and I hope it will be better than what I see here.
If you go with a skip tooth chain and have it nice and sharp it will cut like you wouldn't believe I have the same saw and with the proper bar and chain and tuning they kick ass! And run a non ethanol fuel higher octane and 40:1! with a quality oil!
I have a Old Sthil 041 av I’m trying to figure out how I can get it fixed so it runs like new again ! It’s got some killer dawgs and a nice Oregon bar on it . It’s a good looking saw , I need to get a chain brake put onto it and diagnose it inside and out and figure out what is wrong with it . The body style is a little different from yours , yours has the high back , mine is round on the top front and back .
I agree with others. I have a non av 041 with a no name ebay piston/cylinder. A 25” forester bar/chain. Mine will destroy dry hard wood at full length (properly tuned). Maybe mines just an anomaly but it has torque for days
You sure you haver good compression? If so, it's likely a mixture problem. Wish I could help you troubleshoot it through the internet, but try setting the adjustment screws to the factory setting (mine was marked on the case) and go from there.
I tuned up my 041 replace carb, and fuel lines, etc. then couldn't get any fuel to the carb. Tried all sorts of suggestions, then discovered that when I pushed the fuel barb piece into the tank fuel line rubber on the outside of the tank, the 90 degree portion of the exterior hose barb connector, wasn't completely seated and it was closed off by the rubber line. I'm not sure how to avoid having this happen, unless you can shine a light into the tank after you push down the fitting, I didn't even see it right away when I removed it during my troubleshooting efforts. I read tons of different posts and videos, no one mentioned this. Maybe you can include it, might not happen on any other models mine is 1978-79 Farm Boss Stihl
Definitely looks like the chain needs to be sharpened. A big thing that most people don't know about sharpening a chainsaw . The teeth on a chain are angled downward sloping to the back.As you file your chain and it gets shorter, it gets shorter in height as well. You must take a flat file and knock the rakes down in front of the teeth. The rakes are the dull piece that pull the sawdust out. If you sharpen your chain back too far and don't knock your rakes down, you will be trying to cut wood with the rake and not the Tooth....
@@youneverknow111 I've never seen one myself. It is a firm convention that the arrow points to the exhaust port, although unusually on the 041AV engine, both ports are on the same side of the barrel
Rwong Spilleng sounds like either a mixture problem or bad gas. My dad had a similar problem because he didn’t put the cap on his gas container and moisture mixed with the fuel. Got some fresh gas and she fired right up.
I filled it all new oil and gas because i bought it 3 days ago from my cousin , he said the chainsaw stock for morethan 3 years, so i clean all and drain the gasoline tank and oil before filling new, and when i pull the starter it starts first maybe 3 seconds then die. I put some gas in carburator again , it starts then die. , i will try to mix another gas and oil like your suggestion.
If it’s been sitting you could always try replacing the carb. Sometimes that’s the easiest thing to do. They’re relatively inexpensive and bolt right on.
Hey man nice vid as previously mentioned fatten up low and high screws maybe half to 3/4 turn out each and idle screw out..... ps where did U get the top end kit from plz and how much did u pay also I am in Australia 🤙🇦🇺
Hi my dad has a Stihl 041AV chainsaw and is looking for parts such as a chain adjusting screw. Cant get these in Ireland and it would be great if you could help with a couple of part suppliers.J
Try tune carb.i had problem with my the piston rings had 5mm gap it starter without any problem and it worked but acceleration was slow after changing it works fine.now you can hear diff when start it sound more powerfull.everything was fine just piston rings changed made truly difference
"I'm no mechanic". No shit. Love the way you hammer out gudgeon pin ( aka wrist pin ) risking bending the con-rod and twisting the big-end bearing. Try heating the piston next time. But hey, there's nothing like learning mechanics from someone who's "no mechanic", right. That's the beauty of Utube.
Hi Jared, i have a good news and bad news. Goodnews is my 041 now is running. Badnews is, erratic behaviour and loss acceleration. You can start only if you chocked in, if you close the choke it will die. Base on your experience what is the problem?
Sounds like a carb problem. If it runs well on choke it means it isn't getting enough fuel, and you're never going to have enough power running it in choke to cut anything. Something somewhere is clogged or out of adjustment. I'd save yourself the headache and just get a replacement carb. Bolt it on and get busy cutting stuff! See the link in the description for where I got mine. Good luck.
Look up a video on how to start a chainsaw please. I'm not saying it would have ran if started correctly, but it might very lightly have. I wouldn't call the dude you bought it from dishonest. Maybe he had it running. If it got to that point, it means that it ran until it got to that point.

Great job rebuilding that saw, painfully dull chain

How do you adjust the idle?
041 is the most popular Stihl even though they are considered to be outdated. Sharpen the chain man, and it will help you do nearly everything.

Ebay is a good place to look
Great job ... Can you tell me were I can get a trigger for this saw ??? Stihl don't have any 😞😞😞
Probably Ebay.
What kind of wood did you put that .041 FB in? petrified?
You still have this saw? I have a full wrap handle for it

100% guarantee you will blow that engine again. There was 0 smoke coming out when you started it. Your oil is not mixed right in the gas...
140 psi Good compresion 372xp oem?
Also the 041AV doesn't rev very high it just makes lots of low end power!

Either your chain is very dull or something is wrong my 041 would go thru in 1/2 that time
Hey man nice vid as previously mentioned fatten up low and high screws maybe half to 3/4 turn out each and idle screw out..... ps where did U get the top end kit from plz and how much did u pay also I am in Australia 🤙🇦🇺
Always ignore the arrow on piston. Locate the piston ring pins(detents) toward the inlet side. sometimes the arrow was stamped wrong direction.
That is b.s. the arrow always points to the exhaust.
Nice you got it back running. But the chain is awfully dull
Hi Jared where can find a ignition module for my 041 av electronic?btw nice video, greeet
Howard Pineda honestly eBay is your best bet for this stuff. Glad you liked the video.
If it's the older one you're better off. Converting to a points ignition sometimes.
It could have run with one ring so I don't think the seller was lying!

Spent all the funds on the rebuild, but no new chain. I can hardly stand behind mine without arm covering and face gear
Nothing wrong with the chain, just needs a good sharpening and maybe the rakers taken down. Dressing the bar might help also.
My own o41 keeps locktite in biuissnes good old sawbut screws viberate out contantly loctite every thing!
I had the same problem to till I bought loctite
I can see daylight between the two crankcase halves
You should avoid using those cheap cylinder kits. OEM is really all you should use if you want a dependable saw
I put the part on a copy machine then take the copy and use rubber cement to the gasket material then cut it our.
Good rebuild video but watchin you force the saw to work extra hard with that dull chain was cringeworthy.
Mis favoritas 041 and 051
The 051 is just an underpowered 075. Go big or go home

I could have cut it faster with a hand saw . Buy yourself some files . My 041AV's would have no problem with that small wood .
That chain is dull as hell...the 041 is a decent cutter, not too high reving but enough torque to be a decent bucking saw.
