  • Quick tutorial on how to check to see if your ticking noise is caused by the cam phasers on your Ford 5.4 3V Triton engine. Cam phaser ticking noise is usually heard at idle/low rpm and normally in a drive-thru. When raising rpm to move forward the ticking seems to quiet down or go away.

    Phasers can be replaced without taking the front cover off, just the valve covers need to come off and use a wedge tool to keep chain tight and in place.

    You Don't need to remove everything to just change a cam phaser. These videos out there that show how to line up your camshaft lobs, mark your timing, then using a wedge tool, lock out your chains then R&R your phaser. " FordTechMakuloco" has some great videos.

    I had a camphaser problem on my truck. I solved my problem with the EDGE EVOLUTION programmer, increasing the idle speed and tuning it to work with a stronger gasoline and a thicker oil. I was able to keep my truck with the same engine for 5 years without any other problem. The problem of the camphaser is the oil pressure at low speed and with the heat, it is too liquid to work. Changing the camphaser, does not solve the problem because the problem is the furrows or pass the oil to go to the cam phaser. I put 5w40 oil, ride with a high-octane gasoline, and bought an EDGE EVOLUTION program to increase the idle and put the pre-adjusted program for high-octane gasoline. I never heard his tractor noise again. Good luck to all of you.

      I think you have the same problem I had. If you do exactly what I did, the problem should be solved. Gas with more than 91 octane, 5 w40 oil and increase the idle with a edge evolution. Increasing your rpm is basically activating the phasers and not solving the issue. You can't tune for thicker oil. The engine is built and requires a specific weight and type, so when the wrong oil is used, you cause issues down the road. The main issue that causes the phasers to fail is lack of maintenance and wrong oil type, which wears the engine. The issue isn't normally the cam phaser but it causes the phaser to go bad. Thicker oil is only putting a band aid on the real issue which is lack of oil caused by tolerances increasing from engine wear which is usually caused from lack of maintenance and wrong oil type. The correct way to solve the issue is to increase the volume of oil and/or oil pressure by installing a hvhp oil pump. This vid is on how to check your phaser to see if they are bad. If I had time, I'd make videos explaining exactly what the cause of all the issues are but most of the issues are again caused by lack of maintenance/wrong oil weight/type.

    • @Dombo1969
      @Dombo1969 6 лет назад +6

      I visited 2 Ford dealership, The 2 told me that I had to change the engine, which I did not do, I increased the rpm +100 rpm, so rose to 700 rpm in idle and put thicker oil. Even if it was not ideal, the engine never made its noise tractor and I kept it 5 years more.

    My 06 had the hot idle knock I replaced vct solenoids with the new updates ones The knock went away right away and feels more reponsive Now I noticed the hot idle tick more now and that seems to be about it but also in a echo area I hear a kind of quick clank when I release foot of the gas when going slow through neighbor hood Other than that it runs good and strong I’m wondering if those noises are a big deal ? I’m thinking the clank noise sounds like the chain loosening possibly cause of the chain tensioners being bad Idk

    This is interesting, but I have the opposite problem- quiet at idle, and then loud ticking at about 1200 RPM and in gear. Replaced the solenoids and the old ones acted just like the new ones- they weren't faulty. I'm guessing the phasers themselves are kaput?

    Thank you for your service first and for most. Also for helping people with crazy problems like these. I have one I was hoping you could steer me in the right direction. My only 2 issues I have atm on my 06 5.4 230k miles are a short to ground on my ccw line for the shift motor (I'll figure that out np) but my main concern is at 40mph while gently going up in speed my truck will jerk and jerk up to 60mph. If I gas it harder it'll stop. If I gas it pretty decent from below 40 it won't jerk at all. I get no codes unless I purposely slow boat up to 45mph and not give it extra gas I just stay steady and let it rattle for about 10 seconds. Then it throws the 0340 cam sensor code. Old sensor is good but tried a new one in right side (passenger) anyway. No change. Original owner swore the timing kit was done along with a new high flow oil pump at 170k. Any suggestions where to start? I'm a commercial/roadway electrician so I do not mind getting dirty. Tysm happy memorial Day and good bless 🙏

      Also I def have the diesel tick. I'm leaning towards I was lied to about the timing kit and I'll check in the a.m. per your video. This just started about 4 weeks ago when I was stuck in sugar sand but I didn't beat my tranny or truck up. I gently shifted while driving forward and back. Once I got fully stuck I didn't retardedly spin my tires or beat on my truck. Got out dug up my tires and chopped down a few trees and drove off. I doubt it was the cause but this started the next day. Worth mentioning I assume. Thanks again brother

    • @okcvet1st
      @okcvet1st  5 лет назад +2

      Sounds like maybe a few issues. Hard to tell without looking at it in person though. I've seen a lot of cheap timing kits that people buy off the net for a couple hundred. The problem is just that, they're cheap and don't last long. That could be one issue. Another issue could be damage from re-using and not replacing the cam phaser bolts. Some people don't replace the vct solenoids when doing a timing set, but they are common problems. I'd look at the oil pump also. If cheap parts were bought, a cheap pump may have been put on also. It really needs a high volume oil pump. High flow sometimes means high pressure but not neccessarily high volume, depending on the manufacturer. The oil pickup tube in the pan could be full of debris and not giving the engine proper oil flow. Also the heads could be needing rebuilt. Try using 5w30 oil instead of 5w20 and see if you have any change. Check and make sure the timing is correct and not off a tooth, I've seen lots that were not timed right. Hopefully this info helps you a little, let me know how it turns out.

    • @bikerboysrus1
      @bikerboysrus1 5 лет назад +2

      Absolutely. Thank you sir 👍 will delve into this soon and see what I can find. So far it's not CPS or vct. The timing set was either not done or as you said was done improperly or cheap. It needs to be redone. I'm suspecting my problem is going to be a bad COP so going to ohm them out as soon as my son takes a nap. Also there are multiple problems at this point I need to address besides the COP if that is my current problem. I am looking to sell this truck and get something better on gas for the next 2 years with my long distance job but I will not pass on my problem to someone else. That is just disgusting to me.

      Well I did diagnose a bad cylinder 5 COP. Was omw to AutoZone to buy a new set when I blew a hole in the valve cover. The hole is exactly in line with the timing chain as if it bored a hole in the cover but my guess is that it jumped timing and threw the chain into the cover. Looks like I will be trying to find a shop that can replace it with a used 5.4 or 4.6 if the engine is toast. Hoping it will be the timing components and maybe boring the cyclenders and replacing the Pistons etc. Either way 3k is more than I can afford as a single dad so wish me luck sir. Quick question, I can duplicate my noise which is a “clacking” by putting the truck on a slight incline and giving it very little throttle to creep up and the clacking will start and continue until I rev past 1k-1.5k then it smooths out. I tried your method of unplugging the VCTs and with them unplugged the noise will not happen. I expected the noise and it not to smooth out but it won’t make it at all with the VCTs unplugged. Should I still go after the phasers or can this be a solenoid issue? Thanks

It’s one of the two. Last, if you want to try VCTs first you don’t have to remove valve covers just use a screw type puller and you can change it through the cover. The VCT I got comes with a new valve cover seal.

    I have the knock, I know they're bad, but now when I go up hill or under a load, it's begun to make sort of a rattling or grinding noise, but goes away when I let up on the gas pedal. Are they getting ready go completely?

    • @okcvet1st
      @okcvet1st  6 лет назад +3

      Have you had it looked at to make sure that's where the noise is coming from? When you let off the gas, the chains go laxed, and if your guide are worn or broken, you'll have a rattling sound. When you push on the gas, one side of the chains will flop if your guides are worn or broken. The phasers can make all shorts of noise depending on what stage failure they're in. Is it a 4wd? Sometimes people mistake the noise that could be coming from a bad 4wd actuator or vacuum leak. They are vacuum operated and when vacuum fluctuates they could be trying to engage. The actuators are also known to try and engage under load or going up hills usually caused from a vacuum leak.

    • @okcvet1st
      @okcvet1st  5 лет назад +5

      Really depends on the condition of everything. It's best to replace everything including the timing set once it starts making noise. It's a matter of time before it all will need replaced anyway. You have to remove the chains to change the oil pump so the labor cost is once instead of twice if you do it at one time. You may try to use 5w30 oil and see if that helps any also. Hope this helps.

    • @okcvet1st
      @okcvet1st  5 лет назад +1

      It really depends on if you trust the mechanic and their diagnosis is correct. Phaser issues and chain rattle are two different problems, that may or may not be caused from the same issue. The cam phasers are not always bad, but when they are, they can cause the chains to jerk and do other damage like break the guides. The chains can be rattling without the phasers being bad also. There's multiple scenarios to what could actually be wrong but I normally recommend changing all the timing components while your in there, including installing a high volume oil pump. Here in the US, for 1900 (2500cdn=1891 US currently I believe)I can change all timing components with aftermarket parts. Using oem factory it runs right around 2300 and that's with parts, a new oil pump, antifreeze, labor, etc. If I were to only change the phasers, and use OEM factory parts, I would charge approx 1k, which is 1322 Cdn at the current rate. If the phasers are the only parts being replaced, the valve covers are removed, not the whole timing cover. I don't know how labor rates are up in Canada or what parts cost so that may be a factor to why they are charging what seems like too much to me, unless I misunderstood your question. I believe you asked about cam phaser replacement. If your engine is rattling like mad, the chains/guides most likely need replaced also. Hopefully the mechanic your using is honest and able to properly diagnose the issue. Hope I helped and thanks for watching!

    • @okcvet1st
      @okcvet1st  6 лет назад +6

      Its needs to be properly diagnosed to know what is going on. Test can show if the vct solenoids or the phasers are working properly. Over 50% of the engines I repair need new timing sets installed. Lack of maintenance/wrong oil/filter & low quality aftermarket parts are the leading causes of failure in any engine. If your engine is running fine and it just rattles, it can be fixed so don't let anyone tell you the engine needs replaced, which I hear that very often.

    • @okcvet1st

      I use a snap-on scanner to diagnose. I'm able to see cam/timing degrees along with other data. A "code scanner" will not show you what you need to know to properly diagnose. You can get an idea by doing this test, but to pinpoint you have to use a capable scanner and know what the data means. The cam phasers do not have any electrical parts. Failure usually points to other issues like oil, maint, or how they were installed if replaced already.

Guess I shouldn't have said it would be a good idea to replace the timing set and oil pump while your in there because it all has to come off for that anyway, not referring to cam phaser replacement only. What I should have said to make it more clear is, you can replace the cam phasers alone without taking the timing cover off but if you decide to replace your timing set, you'll have to remove the cover and would be a good idea to replace the oil pump while your in there. Why bother id you aren't going to demonstrate?

      If I tried to demonstrate, I'd get comments saying you couldn't hear me because the engine was running, so I did my best at the time. Basically, if the noise changes with the vct solenoids plugged up, then the phasers are locking in, which stops the noise. When not connected, they don't lock in and continue to rattle as you raise the rpm. If the rattle continues with the vct plugged in and rpm raising, the next step would be looking to see if the vct solenoids are faulty. Sorry if the video didn't help. May browse through my other videos that talk about the timing.

    OK but you didn't show the noise itself so this video is basically usless
