I did a cam phaser lock out. I haven’t purchased a Tune/Tuner yet. When I start the truck it runs but idles poorly. Shakes and feels like it misfires, but no codes. I’m trying to eliminate any possibility other than a tune that would be causing this. As far as I can tell, and I’ve worked extensively, there are no vacuum leaks. New motorcraft plugs, new fuel filter, all ford timing parts, new manifold gaskets, new elbow hose for the brake booster, cleaned the MAF. Did you happen to run the engine before flashing the ECU? Thanks
Cool. You know, idling an engine with a close, but not correct, tune isn’t going to damage anything. It’s not under load, it’s naturally aspirated… have you ever built an engine and ran a standalone ECU, like a Haltec, and had to have a tune programmed from scratch? All I wanted to know was if you ran it at all before flashing the ECU, and how it ran, but all you wanted to tell is me is that you’re a dickhead.

I’m at 280k on my 04 5.4 3v. Engine all original. Yes, cam phasers tick. I’m even running it with the oil solenoids unplugged. Engine light on. I may put new phasers, chains, guides and oil pump on it. Maybe I should put lockouts on it while I’m doing it?
I have a 2007 Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4 3v with a about 250,000 miles on it, truck runs beautifully smooth as silk. I’ve tested it hot and cold and in between it has great oil pressure considering. But unfortunately I’ve noticed lately that I’m starting to get the well known 5.4 phaser tick, I was wondering in this situation would it be beneficial to go with a lockout as you’ve done? And will it stop the tick? I was just quoted over $2,500 USD to get this fixed.
CHAMP makes oil filters for AMSOIL so I just buy CHAMP filters for synthetic oil (they have filters for conventional oil) and save the money over paying the Amsoil markup.
Just picked up well used (175K miles) '04 5.4 XLT. It sounds like it's dieseling a bit...sounded similar to what yours sounded like (to me) but a bit worse. Does yours sounds like that? I found out the previous owner paid $1,800 to have the plugs changed, so I don't have to worry about that issue. I'm going to replace the VCT solenoids first and see if that helps. Thanks for sharing your videos/experiences.
I think BK'S ENGINE SOUNDED VERY VERY SMOOTH & QUIET ? 1,800 TO HAVE THE PLUGS CHANGED WTF ? KRAZY, WAS IT A WOMAN ? THAT'S ROBBERY MAN JUST PLAIN ROBBERY. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY DIESELING ? THANKS
Don't know how to describe it other than you know the difference between a gas engine idling and a diesel engine idling. I agree that his engine sounds rock solid/smooth. These engines are notorious for having the two-part spark plugs break off during first removal due to carbon buildup. PIA to get the 2nd part(s) out after porcelain insulator cracks. They sell a special tool to retrieve the broken parts. I'm guessing that's what happened to original owner. Ford redesigned the plugs to a one piece design after that nightmare.
OK ITUMBLE4U, GOTCHA, I have 4.0 straight 6 in my Jeep NOTORIOUS FOR SOUNDING LIKE A RATTLE TRAP BUT BULLET PROOF IF MAINTEANCE IS KEPT UP. The question I was hoping for a answer to is can I install the locks and leave the factory tune alone or do I have to buy the locks along with a tune such as you did with the sct ?
Good video, don't mind the language btw..lol....I do have a question since I've recently become an owner of an f150 Supercrew with the 4.6. The truck has a little over 100k miles on it. I have heard of issues with these phasers and oil pumps going out. The truck is a single owner truck and it seems like the truck has been driven on the lighter side and has a well maintained engine. The brakes oils all seem to have always been well kept up as the engine is clean and the under carriage od the truck is clean from oil grud. I plan to possibly do the phaser lock and am considering replacing the oil pump if I do go that route to avoid potential issues. My thoughts are to go with a high volume oil pump and I do get how the viscousity changes and how the oil pressure does not have much to do with the pump's volume and oil when it is hot but do you suppose the high volume pump may hurt the engine during high RPM's such as would happen when running low gears in 4 low in a 4x4 truck? So If the pump moves the oil up to the heads that much quicker. Do you suppose the lower engine assembly may starve for oil? An engine builder I used for an engine rebuild actually put in oil restrictors in so the oil doesn't just shoot up to the heads and spend more time up there he said, rather than at the crank where it's more crucial. This he said could ofcourse become a carastrophic event? I only mention this because I've been seeing vid after vid about phasers issues and see that a lot of people installed high volume pumps. Now, since I myself do not have enough experience working on any Ford engines, I'm curious if you've heard of any issues anyone may have mentioned regarding high volume pumps? I'm not even sure if there is a place that Ford has to install oil restrictors. So I hope my questions or comments don't come off as a statement against high volume pumps for Fords but rather am curious if this could potentially become an issue. Thanks for taking the time to read this👍
Hey Brother how's the truck today? (2 years later)..So I just bought a 2006 about 8 months ago. Love my truck. Had the tranny rebuilt almost right away. Now just last week I thought I jumped time or some shit the way it was running. (like a bag of cats) Finally had a "Crank No Start "..Seen some of your videos, obviously subscribed. Pulled my valve covers and seen my drivers side phaser was out 90°. Thought Fu&% me but , atlest I know what I'm dealing with now. Dropped the pan for an expection (what a pain in the ass) but , peace of mind knowing it only contains oil lol. Keep the videos coming man!!

The odometer says 419, and change. Motor was gone through 1 time and as well the trans. About 7 k ago it started breaking up at the top end of the wide open 1, 2 and 2,3 shifts. It's progressively gotten worse. It has the original phasers in it. Anyway who's kit did you use if you can remember I would be greatful.

To help the oil pressure to the passenger side of the engine, there are also cam followers that have a smaller hole to reduce oil pressure loss as the driver side of the engine gets priority of oil. What tune did you get with the svt tuner? I got the MPT tune and it does good except when you get to 55mph its like it falls on its face until you get to around 65. i did the lockouts too after watching your video and went ahead and replaced the older rockers with the new ones that have a tiny hole the oil passes through.
Great video brother! My question is this. Is there another way to program the truck after locking it out that doesn't involve the 600+ pre-loaded programmer?
There is a company, might be a few, that you can send your ECM to. They flash it with the tune and send it back. One in Allendale, mi. Steve’s ECM programming.
@@BackCountryWrenchingmy 04 FX4 has 450,000kms on the engine and she's still running perfectly. With how much oil this truck uses, wondering why you use expensive synthetic. Only reason that comes to mind is that synthetic oil is more resistant to viscosity change due to temperature...
That's great I have a 05 about to creep up two 200k motor only has 45k I really want to lock them out. It's hilarious how Ford thought they had the answer to ease the fuel consumption and help with power when there's a little bit to no difference at all and they break down notoriously. My 09 f150 5.4 some days they rattle especially on startup for a few seconds and some days you can't even hear them at all. It's weird. Like should I be concerned about it I can hear it really damn good when I'm going through the drive-thru. Clack clack clack clack clack
I think Ford Makuloco addresses this specific issue on his channel. Says DO NOT ignore, it’s a small issue that starts a domino effect throughout other components, think I remember it has to do with loss of oil pressure.
I installed the lockouts without the tuner and the truck idled smooth and everything, but as soon as I put it into gear it had loss of power like it was out of time and the cam sensors codes came up. The mpg did drop to an average of 11-12 mpg (combination) with 3.73 gears tho. 2005 f150 5.4 4x4 lariat s-cab.

There is a company, might be a few, that you can send your ECM to. They flash it with the tune and send it back. One in Allendale, mi. Steve’s ECM programming.
@@BackCountryWrenchingmy 04 FX4 has 450,000kms on the engine and she's still running perfectly. Had full timing/phasers replaced around 220,000km and all I can say is always use full synthetic 5w30 and change every 5k kilometers and I use motorcraft oil filter myself.
She's a pig on gas and always feels like I'm towing a rig, but lots of power even when driving through the mountains in AB and BC.
Absolutely LOVE your video's/personality and wish you all the best brother 👍
@@Powerstroke431 that's a crazy amount of mileage on a 5.4 it sure has outlasted what they normally do. Mine is still running as well sold it a few years ago but they haven't had any issues with it either
So you did program it for the lock out???
Obviously........
@@BackCountryWrenching ok thanks, you kinda confused me when you said you had the "stock tune". I was thinking factory stock tune.
The lock out tune is just set up that a majority of people won’t have issues. You can fully however make changes to it
Did you have to reprogram your ecu
Yes you do Best Buy everything as a kit as different ECU’s require a different program
I have a lockout kit and oem phasers on 06 f150 5.4l 3v. I have an sct and I'm Trying to find how I can get the tune for it to just run normal after I install the lockouts. Do you know where I should look?
You buy the tune as a kit having the tuner doesn’t mean anything
Only WIX Oil Filters Baby...!
Hey did you have to do a tune on it after you did the lockouts
Yes
how much was the kit you used and tuner
I can’t remember around 5-600 Cad
Thanks I hope all goes well with mine its a 2005 5.4 with 242000 on the clock now
Replace the oil pump while you have it apart as well
With how much oil this truck uses, wondering why you use expensive synthetic. Only reason that comes to mind is that synthetic oil is more resistant to viscosity change due to temperature...
So it starts easier in -30 weather
You are my guy.
What tuner did you use
I purchased a kit that came with the tune made from the code on the PCM
@@BackCountryWrenching can I get the name or the site? I'm in the process of doing my phaser. It would be well appreciated.

Very well said 🏁🏁🏁😃👍.
Ahahhahahaha I have watched a few vids and that armchair comments response made me like these even more.
That truck still running
Sure is and running strong
That's great I have a 05 about to creep up two 200k motor only has 45k I really want to lock them out. I'm getting a rough rattling for like 2 seconds on start up and if I give it alot of throttle befor she warms up i think it's the tensioner but I'm not mechanic i was able to pull the front end apart and replace the 4x4 actuators though
How many K on the truck now? With lockouts and oil pump
It's pretty bad when you have to put a full disclaimer at the front of your video. Sad world we live in.
Yes since people that don’t normally watch this channel may stumble across this video I don’t have to read the butt hurt comments that they were watching the video with their child and weren’t expecting swearing lol
Truck sounds great. Do you plan to fix the rear seal? Any Live Streams coming up? Been a while.
No plans to fix the seal, this will be the last year for the truck. After 8 years it’s time to move on
I always trust the manufacturer - trying to modify anything can cause problems ......... hahahahaha great job bro :) there are always trolls ready to crap on your parade :)
Amen praise the Lord 😇
even performance shops worldwide do away with vvt
It's hilarious how Ford thought they had the answer to ease the fuel consumption and help with power when there's a little bit to no difference at all and they break down notoriously. My 09 f150 5.4 some days they rattle especially on startup for a few seconds and some days you can't even hear them at all. It's weird. Like should I be concerned about it I can hear it really damn good when I'm going through the drive-thru. Clack clack clack clack clack
Me too!! Are you going to do anything to it? I’m thinking just replace the whole thing with a Jasper 5.4
I think Ford Makuloco addresses this specific issue on his channel. Says DO NOT ignore, it’s a small issue that starts a domino effect throughout other components, think I remember it has to do with loss of oil pressure.
What did you do here? I'm having same thing.
Can I install the lock outs without tuner program.I can't afford tuner program . Will it work?
No you can not you need the tuner otherwise..... I don’t know what would happen assuming it wouldn’t be good
I installed the lockouts without the tuner and the truck idled smooth and everything, but as soon as I put it into gear it had loss of power like it was out of time and the cam sensors codes came up. The mpg did drop to an average of 11-12 mpg (combination) with 3.73 gears tho. 2005 f150 5.4 4x4 lariat s-cab.
Well that answers that question 👍
Ford forums bring the armchair mechanics like nothing else.
That they sure do
Change the oil pump.
20w50 yeeesh 😬
That's only around 137,000 miles. You gots lots of shit wrong with that thing for only that many miles on it.
Well we know why your cam phasers fucked up. Using different oil isnt advisable. Tiny oil Passages and oil viscosity....
Wrong...... the engine inside was spotless with no build up
@@BackCountryWrenching doesnt mean that the phasers were not starved due to thick oil viscosity. You're underestimating how important that is with those engines.
Ford Makuloco recommends switching away from Ford recommended 5W-20 to 5W-30 in these engines, especially at high mileage.
Dude that sounds louder than mine that doesn’t have the cam phaser lock outs. Shouldn’t sound like a diesel bro
Doesn't even sound anywhere like a diesel.......do you even know how a diesel sounds...
@@BackCountryWrenching yes I know what a diesel sounds like I own one your truck sounds just like my duramax it shouldn’t be that loud I would know I’m also a Ford mechanic
Your not anything but a armchair mechanic.......
Armchair mechanics lol I've neber heard such a true statement
Wish I knew that 2 years ago:(
They have been out for a long time just not much info it there on them
@@BackCountryWrenching I just replaced 1 two year ago
@@BackCountryWrenching how's the lockouts going now?
your lucky you have that many miles and never touched the roller followers. i think i just had my number seven follower busted out of its home smh
It was still working good when I sold it
I love you 😂😂😂😂😂 lol
Clean out that tool box boy
Stay away from the 2018 5.0 coyote engine, what a joke that thing is,believe me I have a f150 with this shit in it.
Interesting, everybody says that’s a awesome motor
Bullshitkorner They have good power, google it.Engine ticks at idle, chain slap when engine is cold, high oil consumption, scoring on cylinders.Ford redesign the 5.0 for 2018 and fucked it all up.I did not know that before I bought one, fuck me.
