  • @okhotrodder
    @okhotrodder Год назад +20

    I've been saying this for years. My wife says people don't want to know the details why their engine is making a noise. They just want it fixed. I'd say 95% of owners that go to the dealer or another shop instantly get told they need a new engine. I've lost business from telling people it just needs a timing set and an hv oil pump because they've been convinced by the other 3 shops that the engine is bad. I get told I don't know what I'm doing and no way I'm working on their vehicle. Just irritating when I hear someone say they spent $8k plus getting a new engine. Wish I could convince people to hand over money like that.
    A couple of years ago, doing 5.4 3v timing jobs was my bread and butter. I still have several sitting that just need a timing set, from the owners insisting on a new engine. Shops don't have mechanics with experience to know what the issue is, so they just say needs a new engine. And shops go with the flow with other shops to make more money. Meaning, when a customer says the other shop said they need an engine, they say yep, it does.
    I believe the 5.4 3v got a bad reputation for a few reasons. One, lack of maintenance or improper maintenance. Two, mechanics/shops shaking their head and saying needs a new engine. Three, people hearing stories about how bad their engine is.

    • @johnsonbobo2376
      @johnsonbobo2376 Год назад +1

      Dude 5.4 3 valve is a horrible engine. MACK says so himself in a lot of these videos

    • @okhotrodder
      @okhotrodder Год назад +7

      @Johnson Bobo The 5.4 3v may be worse than other Ford engines in some opinions, but every one of them I've had has lasted over 200k. I can't say that for other engine brands. If they are properly maintained, they usually give a full service life. I don't work on just Fords. I work on anything that comes in the door, and that includes Dodge, Chevy, Honda, Toyota, BMW, VW, Peterbuilt, Cat, etc. Also Briggs and straton, tao tao, and anything else.
      With all the hauling I do, the engine that caused the least issue was the 5.4 3v. In the military, I worked on mainly diesels, and I'd much rather work on a 3v than pretty much any other engine. To me, they are easy and not complicated at all. I never said he is wrong. I just know I use to do timing sets on them pretty often for customers, and everyone has told me they didn't have any other issues other than the filter adapter leaking, which was an easy fix also.
      A timing set doesn't make an engine the worst one out there. And Ford is having issues with timing components just like every other manufacturer is. Timing jobs are apart of maintenance. I still have several 3v's myself that run fine with over 240k miles. I can't say that for anything else I've owned, and I currently have over a dozen personal vehicles of different makes sitting here.

      My 04 FX4 is sitting at 463,000kms and still going strong. Full timing was done around 220,000kms so you should have no issues getting another 200,000 miles out of your engine as long as you run full synthetic 5W30 P platinum high mileage and change every 5k miles or so 🙂

    • @Powerstroke431
      @Powerstroke431 Год назад +5

      @Orange Manok no, oil pump is still stock. Install an external oil pressure gauge and if your hot idle oil psi is below 20 then upgrade, but if around 20 the engine should be fine as long as you use full synthetic 5w30, use motorcraft oil filters and change both every 5k miles.

He has a video to this effect somewhere on his channel. If he sees this maybe he'll link that. IMHO the cost for a high volume pump isn't that much more than a regular one so why not? I have the warm Idol tick. Only 60k on the odometer. Done the complete timing with up graded parts and mellings 340 hv pump. None of my parts had any noticeable wear so I think it was all for naught. Super clean engine so I think it’s the exhaust manifold. I’m still happy I did the work myself on it. I does idol smoother. But the noise is still there. I’ll now drive it till it drops and ignore the noise. These 5.4s are not as bad as they say. I’ll take one over a multi displacement engine . Possibly a turbo as well.

    I just bought an 06, and it has these exact noises, along with trying to die at low rpm after it's hot. Runs like a champ for like 10 miles, then as soon as it heats up, dies if I lift foot off the pedal. I just ordered all the parts Brian advised, will try to do this job this week.

    I want to thank you sincerely for your help from the complete walk through videos you posted as I just completed the timing rebuilt. All new components including oil pump upgrade and all new oem valve train components. Adjusters, followers fasers, selinoids, plugs, coils ,chains, guides and chains. It was a real task but well worth it. You are a real gem and I really appreciate you. Started it up this morning and sounds like a brand new engine. More oil pressure, power and responsiveness.
    Thank You Soo much.

    This is exactly what going on with my 08 5.4 F-150. When it warms up, at idle it has that slight knocking noise, and only when its warm. . It is annoying but its good to hear it s not necessarily the end of the world. lol

    This is the single most helpful diagnostic video I've seen yet. And you describe and show the sounds exactly. My 08 5.4 with 280k miles is making those exact noises, especially in the summer. I'm in the process of getting enough parts together to build a longblock to replace my engine using the links you have provided in several other of your videos.
    I have two questions if you'd be willing to answer with your opinion.
    1. In a completely fresh engine with the melling pump, do you still recommend the 5w30 oil?
    And 2. Do you have a recommended source for new, bare, head castings with the 12mm plugs? You do a great job helping so many of us out. Thank you!

      @yiction Got the shortblock assembled. It's. 030 over, had to go .010 under on the crank to get good bearing clearances. Have Comp xe253 cams for it, and went with new, aftermarket bare head castings off ebay. I ordered the full timing kit recommended by Fordtechmakuloco along with the updated roller followers. Still have to assemble the top end yet though.

But i took it to a auto shop , told the guy i need a timing chain he basically told me i need a need engine and he did not want to do a timing change cause he didn't want to make me spend all that money and if something else messes up and i need a new engine.

    You mentioned awhile back to switch to 5W-30 from the 5W-20 recommended for the 5.4 3V engine. My F150 is a 2004 new body style and has that phaser knock with my engine light on even after both of my VCTs were changed. Would changing my oil to the 5W-30 make a difference? I don’t remembering you mentioning anything about the higher viscosity in this video. Thanks

    My 2007 F-150 5.4 has always had the phaser oscillation noise since I bought it with just over 40k. I've had an oil pressure gauge on it for years now and when it is "oscillating", the gauge shows a steady 40 PSI. In response to you saying it's because of a low oil pressure issue, I think that's strange because if that were true (in the case of my truck at least), I'd think it'd be a lot lower than that.
