      this was the weird album, that album and artist that didn't fit with all the other stuff back in 1987 when i was coming on 17 years old, that was stuck in with all the New Wave. maybe the covers caught me, and that's why i picked them up. but tracks like this pulled me in. made me listen. made me stay. thanks so much for all you do, Jamel. what a great reaction. you really nailed this. so much empathy, so much humanity, in everything you do. peace & health & love to you and your family.

    And I, I'm darkness, I'm anger, I'm pain

    • @M.Never.
      @M.Never. 3 года назад +2

      @@felipejara2234 I've dug a little deeper into this on the reddit/r/dio subreddit (I'm u/redqueen2 there). It might be a dialogue between the inner child and the shadow self. Notice how he sings with a high, childlike voice in the beginning, sounding like an insecure, anxious child, and then switches to the darker, more aggressive voice once the "hey, you..." part begins. Like another inner voice (the shadow) is addressing the child suddenly. The child is afraid of strangers, then the shadow comes in and tells the child that *he* is the stranger. In the third part it's the child talking again and it is afraid of the shadow now ("don't dance in darkness...").
      In the liner notes to the Stand Up and Shout compilation he says that coming out of Sabbath he felt angry and hurt and threatened by everyone who wasn't family or close friend.
      It's incredible that it has taken decades and numerous discussions including one with a professor of English literature to finally put this together. I very much doubt I'm reading too much into it; it looks so obvious and deliberate, especially with the voice changes. This song is a real masterpiece.

    I've always thought this song has two meanings. The things that we believe are good, but can be danger. The other meaning is one of sarcasm where people tell you not to take chances, not to dream of the good things in life because they will let you down...in the eyes of people who don't believe it's achievable. I can say I'm an ex wife who never sought alimony against my lawyers advice. I told him I wasn't having my ex going around telling people he kept me up. Also, he only paid $200/month in child support at my request as well. When our children reached 18, my ex thanked me.

    Back in the days of long hair, jeans, leather high tops laced halfway up and the tongue sticking out from the bottom of the jeans, concert t-shirts, a single dangling cross earring in the left ear, and a denim or leather jacket. That's what me and my Metal Head friends wore when partying.

    Ronnie Dio was a true lyricist... so many of his songs have deep meanings or hidden messages... one of my all time favorites is "All The Fools Sailed Away"... there's perfect harmony in the rising and the falling of the sea... and as we drift along I never fail to be astounded by the things we'll do for promises... and a song

    I met Vinny in 87 / 88 at a drum shop in San Francisco, and he was the nicest guy you could have ever met. I wish I would have taken the opportunity to show him what I was working on, as he would have probably liked it. I was too starstruck to have a real conversation, so I bought his book and had him sign it; Still have it to this day. The guy has one of the best grooves in hard rock / metal. HIs brother Carmine is a real banger, too. Appreciate your videos, my man. Keep it yee.

    Jamel, everything you just said about your appreciation for music is why you're simply the best at what you do! Dio's first three albums consisted of : Vivian Campbell on guitars, who later went on to play for Whitesnake and Def Leopard. Jimmy Bain on bass guitar, who played with Dio in the band Rainbow. Vinnie Appice on drums, who played with Dio in Black Sabbath/ Heaven and Hell. This was the quintessential lineup for Dio's band.

    Welcome my brother, to one of the best metal albums of the 80s, bar none. Every time I listen to this song, it just crushes me. And there are other songs on this album that are just as good as this, if not better.
    This is a song that makes me think of an overprotective mother trying to protect her child from EVERYTHING. Not just stuff that can put you in danger, but EVERYTHING.
    Vinny Appice and Vivian Campbell made the perfect foil to Dio's stellar singing.
