According to Dutch news , earlier this year Golden Earring co-founder , singer and guitarrist George Kooyman was diagnosed with the disease ALS . The band has officially stopped performing after decades . Let's all pray for the health of Brother George . Golden Earring is my favorite European rock band , and I have some song suggestions besides the obvious Radar Love and Twilight Zone . Check out When The Lady Smiles , Midnight Moonlight , Silent Tears , and Long Blonde Animal . My personal favorite is Something Heavy Going Down . The song and video make me recall my days as a navy radar operator on warships sailing in hostile waters . The lyrics ' on a midnight operation when the searchlights make your skin crawl ' give me something close to PTSD feelings . Peace !

Back in the early 80s, noir was a big thing. This vid is a nod to noir films of the 40s and spy movies of the early 60s, with a nice helping of kink sprinkled in for good measure. It's a hit man's experience of being double-crossed, tortured and set up for execution, with his hallucinations contrasting with reality. 'Well the night weighs heavy on his guilty mind...'

"Twilight Zone" is a 1982 hit by Dutch band Golden Earring. It was written by the band's guitarist George Kooymans, who got the inspiration from a book by Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity. "Twilight Zone" appears on their 1982 album Cut and pays tribute to the 1960s television series The Twilight Zone. It spent more than half a year (27 weeks) on the U.S. Pop charts. It was the group's sole Top 10 Pop single on the US Billboard Hot 100 (the song reached #16 on the Cashbox chart) and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top Album Tracks chart, the band's only No. 1 hit in America

This song was made just after the Cold War was ending when intergovernmental spy and assassin stories were at an apex. The creater of the song was inspired by the book, "The Bourne Identity," which movie we have all seen.
However, in this song, The guy is a Russian spy in Turkey. The stanza, "My beacon's been moved under moon and star:" refers to this. The 'beacon' is referring to his own life, and the 'moon and star' is a reference to the crescent moon and star of the Turkish flag.
Why Russia and Turkey? Because during the cold war, those two coutries entered into a crisis for which Turkey had to turn to the United States for help, and Russia was believed to use assassins, and then double cross them.
    Song verse meanings:
    VERSE 1
    ("It's two a.m.
    The fear has gone
    I'm sittin' here waitin'
    The gun still warm
Maybe my connection is tired of takin' chances")
He's been sent by Russia to Turkey to kill someone, he's just finished the job, his gun is still warm. Now he's sitting in his hotel room waiting for his contact to get him the information he needs to get out of the country. But he realizes his contact is late...
    VERSE 2:
("Yeah there's a storm on the loose, sirens in my head
I'm wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead
I cannot decode, my whole life spins into a frenzy")
Now he's been abandoned by all his contacts inside the country, (wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead), and he now realizes that his own country is now going to assassinate him because he's a loose end.
The rest speaks for itself and is self explanatory

One of the most popular concept videos from the early days of MTV. The record labels were throwing BIG money into videos then. Some bands were "allowed" to make club versions of their videos; in other words, videos intended to be played in adult night clubs. But the club versions didn't have the "CENSORED" blocking on them. And yes, Motley Crue had a club version of "Girls, Girls, Girls..."!

The album version has a longer drum solo segment in the middle and a more extended outro. The video and the song are based on spycraft stories of agents being doublecrossed by their own allies. Golden Earring actually holds the World Record for the longest operating (recording and touring) Rock band with 2 original members. Radar Love is another of their big hits, but for some other favorites I recommend: Clear Night Moonlight; She Flies on Strange Wings; Something Heavy Going Down; Ce Soir; Vanilla Queen. Golden Earring was a Dutch rock band, founded in 1961 in The Hague as The Golden Earrings (the definite article was dropped in 1967, while the "s" was dropped in 1969). They achieved worldwide fame with their international hit songs "Radar Love" in 1973, which went to number one on the Dutch charts, reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, and went to number thirteen on the United States charts, "Twilight Zone" in 1982, and "When the Lady Smiles" in 1984. During their career they have had nearly 30 top-ten singles on the Dutch charts while releasing 25 studio albums.

I looked this one up, from 1982 so early MTV years video. It says it was inspired by Robert Ludlum's "The Borne Identity" book, which has been remade in to to a new series of movies recently. The book is about a superspy who wakes up with amnesia after an injury and does not know why people are after him or how he has some ninja skills. So the music video does have these themes of confusion and unreality. I always liked the song, but never knew it was inspired by this Ludlum book which I actually read back in the 80's. Great to have two great artforms with this kind of crossover.
