    In the U.S., we hear little of the Czech Republic or Slovakia, so learning about gay life there is especially interesting. By going online and being public with your lives, you are pioneers in a way. I've also enjoyed seeing Brno, your country house, and other places you've shown us.

    I read today that there was a vote in Czech on marriage equality, and the voting was a success. There will be marriage equality in Czech👏👏👏

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  3 года назад +14

      It's funny they were discussing it in the parliament today just as we released this video 😃 Unfortunately they didn't vote about passing same-sex marriage but only about not rejecting it. Some conservative parties were trying to cancel the efforts and the parliament voted against it, which means the discussion will continue in the future.

      That's a good point! We feel quite comfortable with our neighbors and they know we're gay. The only weird people in our vicinity are construction workers on the neighboring property with all the animals who were also building their fence there recently. They're from the "real" Eastern Europe 🤭

    This reminds me when I was on high school graduation trip in Prag, when I was 17 yo, in 2004. We saw from our bus ( which was stopped in some parking lot or something like that) two guys kissing, and we all started staring and we were astonished by what we saw, because we never saw something like that before. I think it was even more surprising for me because I am gay to, and I thought I was the only one in the world, back than. Nowadays, in Croatia, you still cannot see something like that on the street. Maybe in capital, I am not sure, but in my town not for sure. So, Chech Republik is advanced I think. Good for you :)

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  3 года назад +5

      That's a great story 😁 If my class went to Prague at that age and we saw two guys kissing, everybody would stare as well since we wouldn't see that in our small town. Prague is very different compared to the rest of the country, it's very liberal and international. It would be probably the best place for gay people in this country to feel free.

    Thank you guys for this video. I was wondering how gay life in the Czech Republic and this video answered those questions. The Czech Republic is a country where I would consider to live in. I am somehow more introvert and I think maybe I would fit in. Is it difficult to make (gay) friends in the Czech Republic? Does it take time? I have been there once and the people seemed to be polite and friendly, but reserved. Is that right? Thanks in advance for answering. Greetings from the Netherlands!

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  Год назад

      Hi Marcio, it's a difficult question for us because we are such introverts, so we don't seek out people 😀 But we would say you are right about the fact that Czechs are usually friendly but quite reserved. We know gay couples from Poland for example that moved to the Czech republic (because of Poland being very homophobic) and they like it here. It's probably the easiest to make friends at work. Not sure about gay friends but in Prague there are gay clubs and everything so if you are into that it's no problem. There are also various groups that you can find on the internet, for example gay hikers that go on trips every weekend 😉 Generally speaking Czechia is an ok country for lgbt people, it's safe and quite liberal (or people don't care). But why would you move here from the Netherlands?

    What an interesting topic to cover in this video. Nearly every country or area has it's issues to overcome when it involves a same sex relationship or marriage. I worry a little for you two with just a "registered partnership" when it might come to health issues (if one of you were hospitalized) - would the other have any say in the treatment or medical decisions or even be allowed in the hospital as a partner? And even more concerning if something (God Forbid) should happen to the other, are their any legal documents in your country that can be drawn up (such as a Last Will and Testament OR Trust Agreement) where the other's assets would automatically go the the partner rather than to a "next of kin"? Thank you as always for your straight-forward (and often amusing) video topics. All the best to you both.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  3 года назад

      We talked all about what's missing from registered partnership as compared to marriage that we forgot to say anything about the rights we gained by "registering" 😃 When it comes to medical treatment, hospital visits or inheritance, we have the same rights as married straight couples. That's why we went for the registered partnership, to get these rights in case we ever needed them 😉

    Hi Tommy and Peter it was a very interesting video ! My brother is gay and in my country, France, it was not easy in the 80s, he and my brother in law have been hit several times (once by three men with baseball bat) in Paris where they lived in that times. I was so afraid and worried so much for them 😢...Then they decided to live in the country to be quiet and safe...Nowadays there is legal marriage and it is safer but there are still people who think bad about that...My idea is that it would be good to learn to children just to respect differences about weight, color of skin, nationality etc...for a better society and future. Still happy and in love ❤❤❤

    I have more comments after thinking about some of your comments. We take so much for granted being gay here in the north east of the USA . We are fortunate to live in a liberal part of our country. As you may know some areas in the US are not as liberal , some gay folks living in this country are faced with some super religious areas which tend to be narrow minded towards gay folks. Of course we find this all over the world. Many European countries were way ahead of the US regarding gay marriage, adoption, etc.. Your sharing has made us consider what we have and what take for granted, so again thanks for sharing, and lots of love to you guys!

    A very interesting video. You have touched on the gay life in your city before, but I was happy that you elaborated on the subject. I live in a rather conservative area and gays are not really accepted, however in the cities there are usually areas that are predominately gay and the show of public affection is quiet natural. New Orleans for example has a very large gay population and most gays live in a specific area. The smaller towns do not have that and gays are frowned on. Affection in public places is usually frowned on, especially if the gay couple flaunt their gayness. The larger towns usually have at least one gay bar where gays can meet. I find that the Czech Republic is very progressive and more than likely gay marriage will become a reality in the near future. Did not realize that Poland was so anti gay. I always thought that most European countries were very much ahead in accepting all things, more so that the US. You all explained the partnership agreement very well, but there is one thing I have a question about. In your current situation, what would happen to the country house and property if one of you should die? If the property was bought together, would either of you be able to claim it? If it is in one partners name only, what happens then? I have mentioned before that I visited the Czech Republic but failed to mention another town I visited that was very beautiful and enjoyable, that was Telc. Spent and afternoon there. Today am awaiting needed rain for most of the afternoon. Again thanks for the video. Take care of yourselves. Tony

    • @antoinebarras8081
      @antoinebarras8081 3 года назад

      PS Forgot to mention your laws about gays adopting children. You made an excellent point about gay singles being able to adopt but not gay couples. I think that is just stupid politics in action, they pass a law and forget or don't care about previous laws they enacted. Politicians are not very practical and are more concerned about how they relate to the public and their fellow members. It's called self interest. Thanks.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  3 года назад

      What I find interesting is that it's so common in US cities to have minority neighborhoods like a neighborhood where gay people live, neighborhood for black people etc. We don't have that here, even in big cities there are no gay parts, we all live integrated. I suppose it can have its pros and cons.
      Europe is kinda like the US, there are differences between European countries just like there are differences between American states. Some countries are more liberal than others, there are big differences in the number of religious people as well. Czech Republic is one of the least religious countries in the world while our neighbor Poland is an opposite extreme.
      Inheritance for registered couples works the same way as for married couples. We each own a half of the house so if I died, Peter would keep his half and he would inherit 50% of my half. Since we don't have children, the other 50% would be split between my parents. So Peter would own 75%, my mom 12.5% and my dad 12.5%. If my parents didn't live anymore, Peter would get everything. If I owned the house alone, Peter would get 50%, mom 25% and dad 25%. Of course that's assuming we wouldn't have a will.
      We've never been to Telč ourselves but we hear it's a very beautiful town. We'd like to visit it one day. It's closer from our country house than from Brno so maybe a day trip there would be nice.
      You're probably right about the adoption laws, now it's being discussed together with same-sex marriage so maybe within a few years gay couples will be allowed to adopt as well.

    Hi friends,
    My comment sent yesterday has once again disappeared although the like worked. So here it is:
    Hi friends,
    Once again, congratulations for your 3000th subscriber. Thank you for this video. It was interesting to learn that your two countries are totally different. So that's why Peter took the CZ nationality. Maybe the marriage will come after this health crisis which is more important for the government. In France, the surviving spouse is entitled to half of the salary of his or her husband and I think also to a reversionary pension depending on his or her income. If the spouses have not made a marriage contract, all property acquired by both spouses during the marriage is common property and goes to the survivor. France has been long to adopt gay marriage and homophobic attacks are on the rise. It is easier to be gay in the city than in the country. I was even surprised to see that there was a gay porn site in CZ! See you soon for news from the country house. Kisses to you both.

      Hi Musu, your prediction was spot on! You said 3000 subscribers by the end of the month and here we are 😃 I read that same-sex marriage is legal in France since 2013 which is great. It's too bad to hear that even in your country there are still homophobic attacks. I guess it's not perfect anywhere. There are probably many porn sites in CZ, a lot of gay porn is filmed in the Czech Republic (mainly in Prague of course).

    Isn’t the C.R. a part of the E.U? Would same sex marriage be a factor in joining? I’m from the USA so uncertain of the requirements of considerations for participating in the union.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  3 года назад

      Yes, our country is a member. There is no requirement for EU countries to allow same-sex marriage. All the countries (and candidates) are however not allowed to discriminate people based on their sexual orientation, for example at work.

  • @tom.jacobs
    @tom.jacobs 3 года назад +1

    Here (Netherlands) the marriage is non-discriminatory for 20 years now (don't call it gay marriage: the goal is one kind of marriage, just without discrimination against same-sex relationship) so the first to strike the discrimination. Adoption from foreign countries is still a thing I believe, but otherwise, all is equal.
    It was done in a time period where lots of social issues were solved: abortion and euthanasia also allowed (under restriction).
    Nowadays -with more/different religious people speaking up/being part of the debate- the last 2 changes even part of a plan to take away. Luckely they are a small minority, so the progress done two decades ago is still upheld.
    Personally never have the urge to be married, although it would be more practical to do so: like straight people, marriage is also a practical step in the relationship, a way to formalize things. Civil union is a way to smoothen the surface to get ready to open marriage.

      Benelux was always very progressive and I remember reading when the Netherlands (and then Belgium) were the first countries in the world to allow gay couples to get married 🥰 Unfortunately there will always be people opposing absolutely everything. There is no topic in the world where 100% of people would agree, no matter what it is. So it's not surprising there are a few people against marriage for same-sex couples in the Netherlands as well 😉

    So I was searching for some info about what it feels like to be generally queer in Central Europe, as I'm actually considering moving to one of these countries. I think it would be also interesting to know how it is to be trans in one of these countries. Unfortunately, for the things you're saying about having to hide, the manipulation of the media or the less recognition of gay couples is why Pride is STILL important. Because of many economic interests of big companies (at least in Western Europe), the Pride is being "kidnapped" somehow, this is why in some places we celebrate "critical" Pride, which is the one that reminds the violences we still suffer, specially we trans people, who created the Pride originally. So I think it would be interesting if you have any trans friend to show their experience in both Czech R. and Slovakia, as I heard lately they are putting more cons for medical health care, for example. Very interesting view anyway. Send you hugs and kisses from Spain🏳‍⚧🥰

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Sadly we don't have any trans friends (we don't have many friends in general), so we don't really know how it is. We just know that being gay here in the Czech Republic is quite fine, most people are usually relaxed about it. Of course as everywhere there are conservative people that can have a problem with it, but in general we haven't encounter any problems. Not even in a tiny village where we have our country house and where we spend a lot of time 😊
      In Slovakia it's far worse, we don't recommend moving there at all, the government is quite anti LGBT and the general atmosphere in the country is not good.

I was afraid to go to my first gay bar for that reason. As time goes on, these things will change. I know that introversion is a personality trait, but for gay people in American it was more prevalent in the past. In fact some of that generation now are going to nursing homes, and jump back in the closet because they are afraid of reprisals from the staff. I am glad to hear that your country is on the right track, and hopefully the idea of marriage will be brought up again to your government. Love you guys!

    We see in the comments that Czechia is moving towards marriage. 👨‍❤️‍👨. That is great news. Here civil unions were introduced in Mexico City also in 2006, and in 2010 the Supreme Court ruled that they had to be recognized in the whole country. Same sex marriage was approved in 2013. They have to be recognized in all states, but it is a state option whether to provide them. The majority of states have marriage, but some states do not, but have to recognize them from other states.

    it is very hard to generalize anything because there will always be exceptions; when gay marriage was legalize in the US back in 2013 (i had to think about when the year was) a gay person could get married on the weekend but return to work on Monday and be fired for being gay, that is because many states doesn't have equal protection clauses in the state's constitution. There might be some protections on the federal level, recently the supreme court ruled in the Bostock Decision that sexual orientation & sexual identity was covered under the 1964 civil rights legislation, but many people probably have no idea that many people still do not have equality. Adoption was one of the rights that gay people in the US could do but ironically Europe has been late to that, but still there is some organizations in the US that tries to forbid it.
    The problem with gay pride, Heritage of Pride does the most popular parade in NYC, is all the corporate sponsors that limits the people's access to the parade. That is why two years ago the Queer Liberation March was started, a popular slogan at that first march was "get off the sidewalk and into the streets".

    LOL. Everything you said is true here in the US. Every gay should visit a gay bar at least once...loud music, diluted drinks, and terrified boys testing the waters of the gay experience. I agree gay pride parades are usually shown on the news showing the biggest exhibitionist. I must say the one gay pride parade I attended was in San Francisco, mother of gay pride parades. It gave a real cross section of the gay world. I have to admit being shocked (I am from a small Southern town) seeing a group who called themselves "Dykes on Bikes:" These out and proud lesbians were riding Harley motorcycles bear breasted down the street. Could only happen in a large city like San Francisco. As an introvert myself I really don't need to know my straight friends sex life nor do they need to know mine.

    That was interesting. Ireland used to be very conservative and religious / Catholic, but the sex scandals of the Catholic Church put paid to that and the pendulum swung the other way. Since 2018 there has been marriage equality. However, Northern Ireland (which remains part of the UK) is rather like Slovakia, remaining ultra conservative. It’s society is dominated by religious zealots, mainly evangelical Protestants. My husband and I would tend to match the views you both share about not seeking attention in the public arena. Sometimes though we might hold hands in public if we feel very safe and comfortable, or steal a kiss in public. We like to think we are doing a small thing to normalise the visibility of gay relationships. Same too with the “gay scene”, it’s not something we really enjoy, so we never venture out. Thanks for sharing your story. Oh, Peter...you look much better with shorter hair. Don’t hide that handsome face under such a barnet! Best wishes from Ireland, Stefan x

      Thank you 😊 We actually find it admirable when a gay couple hold hands or kiss in public - as you said, it hopefully helps normalize these things. As long as it's decent, we wouldn't want to see a straight couple French-kissing in the middle of a street either 😃 It's impressive to see Ireland make such big progress, it gives hope to other religious countries.

    funny thing, you kinda talkig about things i kinda expirenced, wich are fmmiliar, for long time i thought it is coz we are post communistic/socialistic countries, but i am not so sure.. during 80ties in former yugoslavia there were gay non offcial bars, clubs, gthering places (even thou sodomy law was on), open gay couples, even lot of families were accepting in a way we know but we dont disscuss it. sodomy law in most countreis no one forced, you could end in trouble in plaes like kosovo, monte ne**ro,rural parts of serbia, bosnia, croatia, but cities were melting pot of diversities. so i cant speak for rest of ex yu, only for croatia from1996 or so, coz around that time i returned from iceland back home and i was 16/17 around that age, plan was to finish high school and stay. but for someone ( and many others who were younger or little older than me and spend more than 2 years in west as refugees during critical formative puberty and teen years) that return was a torture. country was mostly lead by church, people still had (mostly generations of our parents and older people, people born from 1946 to late 60ties and generaions of their parents), they were still set on that mode you fit, you need to fit into mold, you do as told, you dont ask questions, you obey, you praise the goverment, you behaive like a man or womanor what ever mold offical society put you in, or else. even as a kid before war in 1991 i had glimpses of concquences of that o else, my own fther when i was 5 or 6 was arested under charges for owening banned book ( pretty sure my hard core communistic grandfather reported him when i look back, he had that insane tough love thing, i know best and i do everything to teach you, type of person), when dad got back after 3 or 4 days he was swollen, his face was swollen,nose broken, body filled with bruises and hematoms, so at very early age i kinda figured out that you must fit and then in 1991 war broke and whole set of new rules was applied, opposite one, like you need to go to church, you need to change your name if it is not croatian enough, not chatolich enough, you need to baptise if you are not, you need to go to religious classes and being in a city wich was under 3 month siege and flaten with ground and having a name like mine and suddendly your own family calls you by nickname coz they are affraid to use your real name, but then when city felt and suddendly everyone you knew calling you by your name so loud that every darn JNA soldier can hear it. then again it was fit,fit into mold, adapt or else..suddendly both my sister and brother are called by a nickname.. so 2 years later coz of various reasons you find yourself in a country completly different, still you are different, stil you expirence shit coz you are from central europe, you are primitive part of europe, you are barbaric etc but still you can develope, slowly you make friends and before you know it 5 years passes. and you realise you dont fit in a mold, you dont have to fit coz it is ok not to fit, you are free to be who ever you are, so yeah i had liberty to explore my own sexuality on my own terms, to fogure myself out in my own pace and boom, back to a place where you need to fit again, but someting is different, there is bunch of people like you in your school, in clubs, games, where you go people your own age are same, the ones who stayed whole time still fit or try to fit coz they are programed to do it. but you and many others start to push wheels little by little in same time you fight with dmeons of the past, traumas, but you push that in the corner of your being and sudendly you are part of group, group becomes a movement and before you know it, you are planing first pride, you question authorthies, you go to protest with other 100 000 young people for a radio who dares to oppose to goverment, to president who is an old fa**t with god complex who decides to send tanks on you and bunch of others, so it is democrasy but state lead by old far*** who are over 60 stil operates on a way fit or else. your own mother literly tries to lock you in a house so that you miss a train and miss whole protest, literly drags you by the sleeve and yells dont go dont go, they wil kill you, dont oppose the govermnet, they will lock you up they will beat you. you still go, in a middle of protest where 100 000 people who thinks like you, wants a country be shaped same as you want you find out that there is order issued to send tanks and for short moment you think is it worth it, should i fit, but then you rember the things you went thru in 1991, 1992,1993 and realise that same brhaviour led to those things and you think in yourself screw it, i will rather die than live in a country wich denies free opinion, wich will dictate what i will listen, read, wach, with who i will sleep. and than there is one small light of hope when news broke out that minister of defence refused to apply the order of president, for the first time there is hope, there is a fckn chance for change and to get rid of chains of past system. and thaz how it started, next i know w are called cattel, green and red satans, corrupted youth by west immorals, corrupted youth wich does not know what they want and what is good for them.. ad church into a mix and you have society deeply deeply screwed up coz everyone follows every rule every order without a question, coz bible say so, coz god says so, so communizm was replaced with religion for shrort time. but we spent so much time on the west, had so much contacts, that so many of us knew who to contact in iceland, germany, nederland, norwa, finland and suddendly we had international support and we embraced it. they made a pressure on their govrments, they mad epressure on our. and then the old far*** is dead, there is a chance to change consitutiion to limit for how long someone can be president, wich age he cant be and how little power he can have. and we pushed it... next thing you know it is 2002 and we are marching for the first time, just few hundreds of us, marching till 2022 and now is less than 10 000 but more than 5000 marching. many of us left between 2005 and 2010 to seqarch ourselves again coz counry witch brought us just was not right, we were no where we were between west and east. many of us romaed thru west europe trying to get back lost time and that feeling of being free and not tense, to just live without worries, i personaly went back to iceland, then uk, then norway, nederland then i came back, still dont know why. then my personal struggel begun with my own family when they found out and when i came out, but still so many people is still wraped in that fit mode, just fit dont stick. i think tha is a part of a problem in post comunistic countries, older people are affraid of changes, coz when they go to change things end bad, so they mold their kids same way, so when someone is out of mold it is almost a catastrophy. but new generations born in 2000 are different i see it in my own country, maybe coz they are raised by people who are my age, so real changes will come when we will be in 60ties and those kids in their 20ties and 30ties and have their own kids. it is better than it was in early 2000 we have domestic partnership and civil union, supreme court ordered the state in favour of gay couple, state must allow them tofoster and adopt a child (not to mention in croatia is almost 2000 kids in systems and there is only 1500 foster couples and orphanges are full and new kids are coming) i dont know, i think big issue and part of problem is a mentality of generations born till 70tiesm they had rebelious times but at the end they would bend and fit. in my country we were first who refused to bend and obey..

    Your country’s adoption rule is illogical and I would add ignorant. Two parents are obviously better than one, regardless of gender. There always seems to be narrow minded haters sticking their noses into other people’s lives, no matter where you go in the world, especially with regards to gay issues. Much of it is promoted by various organized religions, using some random quotes from the Christian Bible in this country, ignoring the general theme of being kind to others and not being judgmental. If everyone were like you and us, the world would be a better place, with less hate imposed on minorities via the legal system, and more people minding their own business, like we do.

    • @tommyandpeter

      Yes, the adoption conditions are stupid and don't make any sense. You can adopt but suddenly when there's another gay with you in the household, you're not good enough anymore. We hope it will change soon for those who'd like to adopt. The good news is that public supports marriage for everyone and adoption by same-sex couples (over 60% approval rate) so it should be just a matter of time.
