  • This iconic opening number from West Side Story proved that Jerome Robbins' clean, balletic, and energetic choreography would set the bar for what Broadway could be. Robbins' inspiration stemmed from 20th century dance pioneers Agnes de Mille, Martha Graham, Lester Horton, Jack Cole, and Peter Gennaro. He also took inspiration from the street, looking to mambo clubs of the 1950s, blues, swing, and jazz, and the popular "rag doll" move he incorporated into the Dance at the Gym.
