More American than America. Just like Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony playing Strauss- more Viennese than Vienna, itself. Music like this is why I live. I have tears of joy streaming down my face. People we got to come together. We have to try to be worthy. Music is a blessing from God.
Somewhere is so heartbreaking -- especially this orchestration. I played it in orchestra and cried in the performance. Greatest musical of all time! Beautiful! Just shed a tear now...
We're playing the piece on our upcoming concert. On the one hand, I'm pissed there's no bassoon during Somewhere. On the other hand, I'm glad there's no bassoon part during Somewhere. I get too emotional 😥 I always forget how much WONDERFUL music there is in WSS.
You can tell this conductor worships Maestro Bernstein, just by the way he conducts!!! I wonder how many know that "Somewhere" was a love song, or an expression of atonement, to his wife, the long suffering, Felicia Montealegre.
The Somewhere part breaks my heart every time. It is painful having to relive this music. I cried when I played it in orchestra and I cried when I watched the movie. Man, it is absolutely haunting especially with the string trio at the beginning.
This piece is truly a work of art. 6:14 and 20:20 makes me cry. And playing it in in orchestra is even more awesome. I love every moment I get to play it. Who would agree?
The "Viena Miracle" Andrés Orozco-Estrada has been even much more miraculous conducting this wonderful orchestra in Germany. His versions of Beethoven symphonies are fabulous.
We must thank the Frankfurt Radio Symphony for this very well done Bernstein adventure on the West Side. The sound is superb on fine speakers. Great music from a very good orchestra. Orozco-Estrada gives us a special Hispanic feel. Sent to us the same day of my review! What a privilege. Jazzy and worth a trip.
Every composer dreams about writing music that will live through the ages. Well, Lenny has nothing to worry about. West Side Story will be there with Magic Flute and Madama Butterfly generation after generation. The music is wonderful and the show is amazing and touches every heart.
I'm a big fan of Kirill Petrenko's version with the Berlin Phil, but the slow parts of this version have so much more emotion. The ending is heartbreaking.
A FORÇA DA MÚSICA DE BERNSTEIN E GERSHWIN, É PARALISANTE... DA RESPIRAÇÃO !! SE O PARAISO EXISTISSE, ELES ESTARAIM COMPONDO JUNTOS, UMA SINFONIA DO UNIVERSO... !!!
You literally play one of the greatest melodies ever written on the instrument that you love -- and even if you never felt love in your life, this is what it feels like. Absolutely magical.
At the onset of "Somewhere" you almost feel like the gritty streets of NY are suddenly washed clean of all their filth by the incidence of an unexpected beam of heavenly light. The power of music and human imagination!
This is an orchestra and conductor for whom I have an immense admiration. However, while this performance is far better than most and while it almost gets there, it still doesn't quite achieve the bite and edge of Bernstein's performance, or the defining 2018 performance by the John Wilson Orchestra from the Albert Hall (unfortunately not on RUclips).
Nice to see a percussion player also doubling up to play a wind instrument. Sadly the arrangers fail to get the proper recognition for a superb piece of music. Well done to the orchestra.

So beautiful. Berstein’s genius. A veritable musical instrument of the highest caliber
Whoever did the camera work was as brilliant as the orchestra!
Immer wieder ein Genuss, wie L.Bernstein das Lebensgefühl der jungen Menschen musikalisch umsetzt!
You can tell this conductor worships Maestro Bernstein, just by the way he conducts!!! I wonder how many know that "Somewhere" was a love song, or an expression of atonement, to his wife, the long suffering, Felicia Montealegre.
The enthusiasm of the conductor is so brilliant and adds to the joyful performance. Bravo!
Indeed! Orozco-Estrada is brilliant, and the Frankfurt Orchestra glows in every phrase.

I have been watching a lot of this orchestra's performances. It is one of the world's greatest.

Eine schöne Zusammenfassung des wunderbaren Bernstein Musicals. Perfekt von einem Klasse Orchester intoniert.
Gosh! That viola solo at 4:33 sounded like a human voice. Superb!

I agree 👍
Definitely one of the most well-composed dances of our time.
Bernstein composed these in the 1950's/60's, and you say "of our time" in 2019-20?? Hold on there, I'm not sure whose time your talking about!!??
@@lisaragsdale1530that is considered our time for the era of music
@@sum7242not really. That’s an antiquated mindset.
All this back and forth about time. Music, especially of this caliber, is TIMELESS!! 🎶
Great performance, wonderful arrangement, and of course,it’s Bernstein.
The "Viena Miracle" Andrés Orozco-Estrada has been even much more miraculous conducting this wonderful orchestra in Germany. His versions of Beethoven symphonies are fabulous.
One of the best and most brilliant plays all around!

Brilliant! I mean the music, the orchestration, the conducting and the playing. Altogether an invaluable video.
Very enjoyable! The genius of Bernstein.
absolutely
The day he died the world became a lesser place.
Brilliant piece, brilliant performance, brilliant recording. No doubt, Bernstein was one of the leading composers of the 20th century.
Every composer dreams about writing music that will live through the ages. Well, Lenny has nothing to worry about. West Side Story will be there with Magic Flute and Madama Butterfly generation after generation. The music is wonderful and the show is amazing and touches every heart.
Bravo! with Andres Orozco- Estrada conducting. Brilliant!
Great performance for an American masterpiece. Bravo, Andrea and Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra!
Masterpiece indeed.
Wonderful performance, loved it. It sounded very well rehearsed!
Bernstein would be proud of this performance! Amazing!
A refreshing, elevating performance - right in the spirit of Bernstein!
Wonderful. A feast for the eyes and ears. Thanks you for sharing.
The flute section is SUPERB! #flutepower
Frankfurt waterfront looks stunning!
WOW! This is so beautiful. BRAVO!!!!
HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY LENNY!!
Bernstein the greatest musical instrument of the 20th century.
Outstanding Job!!!!!!!!
The greatest musician to have lived in our lifetimes
I played this at all state and it was so much fun
I'm a big fan of Kirill Petrenko's version with the Berlin Phil, but the slow parts of this version have so much more emotion. The ending is heartbreaking.

That was lovely.
Thank you so much, I really enjoyed this very much
So beautiful!!!!
The last time I played this in orchestra, after the concert, I went home, took a shower and cried. Saddest story ever... Wish I didn't see the movie.

Bestimmt einer der best komponierten Tänze unserer Zeit.
Wish I had been there!
we're playing this later this afternoon on our orchestra.
I though the camera guy was going to fall on the Xylophone player...=)
the boy at 2:17
haha yes xD
*Happy face during Mambo*
*Sad face during Somewhere*
Contribuição brasileira: Fantástico!

Wait! Do you mean the whistle? 😂
Makes me so emotional. = (
6:41 the conductors score
Short moment of intense panic :D
I love every song in WSS, If I were to pick my 2 most beautiful broadway songs would choose “Somewhere” and from MFL “The Street Where You Live.”

Also people check out Peter O’Toole. Amazing man.
And there are stories about O’Toole and Harris you won’t believe. We are talking not just a chuckle you will be amazed.
Jürgen Ellenson auf der B-Trompete 👍
11:47 LMAO
I like 12:41
as good as this performance is at 17:26 you've got to launch into some disgustingly tight swing, it still feels slightly too straight
I think this trombonist at 12:00 looks like Morrison.
This is good. But I think Gustavo Dudamel’s version is better.
Agreed
Love Dudamel version, but this is much better.
Of course Bernstein/NYP is better, but Dudamel’s is pure genius
I like berlinphil's version (not in youtube)
