George Rosewell no. Using a big, flowy skirt and incorporating it into choreography is a thing many cultures do. Shut the fuck up and stop making everything sexual. Not everyone’s mind is shoved all the way down the gutter like yours is.
I've worked in the costume shop for a few shows. The choreographer sometimes does work right with the actor and designer to make the lines of the garment moving enhance the lines of the body. You would be amazed how many full circles of tissue thin fabric are gathered into a waistband like the skirt of Anita's dress.
@@vikli5966 Not to mention many if not all dresses like this are apart of the culture these characters are apart of. Especially considering (I think) these dresses are specifically or usually for dancing.

"Free to be anything you choose" "Free to wait tables and shine shoes." Woah it's crazy how realistic this portrays America. Yes we have the freedom to become *whatever* we want to be but yet most of Americans are working minimum-wage, low-skilled jobs surviving paycheck to paycheck.
I was raised on these songs as an ignorant kid in Columbia, MO in the 1970s and have my mom to thank for introducing me to West Side Story as well as Sound of Music, Cabaret, Fiddler On the Roof, The Music Man, Oliver, and My Fair Lady. I am in alignment with everyone else who gets goosebumps when they see a performer at the top of their game expressing their genius, just like my mom did. It actually makes me emotional because my mom passed away just 3.5 months ago in February. I am ao grateful for her gift of music.
Marcus sorry I didn’t mean to be rude. I also have relatives with Hispanic accents, that sound nothing like that. Even Rita Moreno said that the accent was ridiculous. All those actors in brown face with fake accents are disgusting to me.
I work customer service and have a Spanish accent, it's really annoying when some customers bring it up. Some will say, what country are you in? Or "can you transfer me to someone who speaks English?" even though I speak English fluently and I'm in the US. Having an accent makes me feel like an outsider so I've been trying really hard to get rid of it!
@@V.E.R.O. @Veronica C. Hey, shame on those people because that is pretty bloody rude of them to assume that you're not speaking English in the US (seriously they can get lost) and while wanting to change your accent isn't bad, just don't press yourself because something as tiny as an accent is a small part of your story :)
Heavy, heavy irony in these lyrics but the energy, humour and commitment of these artists make the race issue seem light hearted. I too was a bit teary in the face of such exciting brilliance.
Yeah because most of these “puerto ricans” were portrayed by white actors in brown-face. All of them except for maybe 2 or 3. And this “love” story was written by white men.
I love this film! I used to dance to this at junior school- Rita plays Anita- looks like our vets receptionist, and Rita looks like wheels. My favourite teacher in junior school introduced me to this film. She was a wonderful teacher Mrs Wilkinson. I always used to like to sing Natalie wood - Maria - Ricky Martin. I used to sing tonight with Alison at school- my music teacher wouldn’t let us sing it in the school singing competition 😔
"West Side Story makes there characters more exciting. The song and dance numbers with Bernardo and Anita are more lively. It's not just this movie. Tony and Maria are the love interest and sing more operettic ballads. Although, I Feel Pretty is a great number from Maria.
George Chakiris and Rita Moreno both won Oscars for their performances. I was so disappointed the first time I saw this when Bernardo died and he couldn't meet Anita on the roof after the rumble.
It's wonderful how they seem to have a (At least for the times) relatively equal relationship as well. Bernardo was the "boss" of the Sharks and may have called the shots when it was gang-related stuff, but Anita wasn't taking any orders when it came to their relationship. I'm not sure if it was scripted or a genuine reaction from the cleverness of the line and delivery, but the way that Chakiris smiles defeatedly and appreciatively at the "You forget I'm in America" line exemplifies the respect and mutual admiration that they had as a couple.
the best thing they did to this song was to change who is singing. in the broadway version, it is a song between the women. moving it to have it be a dance between the men and the women was masterful. the sexual tension in the music and the acting is phenomenal and makes the song just sooooo much better.

I love when her expression and when she goes ''Oooooo'' after she says ''You forget I'm in America''.. I have the feeling that Rita Moreno did that on her own without direction. A timeless masterpiece of a number and movie
For me I think what makes this movie adaptation so great is probably the camera work. The cinematography is part of the choreography, whereas on stage ur just looking at all the dancers all at once.
Believe it or not; it was just appreciated as a great musical...We didn't discuss social or political issues...All politicians were "bums and crooks" and Social referred to A dance...I was there...:)
the camera angle on this scene is awesome. From the bottom (feet) angle that made you feel you were there live in broadway, to the close up while the camera moves with the cast that made you feel you were part of the ensemble, to the top so you can appreciate the line and the synchronicity of the dancer. @INTERNETWORK You appear to have a superiority complex. Sorry to say but your opinion is no more important than others... and your opinion is just an opinion, not fact.
From somebody who studed Film Production and who also knows play version well, I disagree. The play is FAR better than the film--they did not capture the electric, spastic, energy of the play (starting with a bland Tony), and I have always wished for a proper remake that capture the play better, so I am hopeful for the new version. As for Best Film Musical, "Cabaret' and "Oliver!" are much better 'Films" (forget the source material, just As A Film) than WSS, which is uneven.
That's awesome! My family loves this movie too! As you get older this song rings as true in 1961, as it is true in 2020. Times change, America at times not so much.... :p

@@SP-se3zf Consider the time that the musical is set in. Absolutely, men are in the role of breadwinner and provider, women being courted before settling into a homemaking role. This reflects in what the characters singing about. The male characters all sing about the difficulties of their working lives. The female characters don't sing at all about their work, even if, presumably, they have jobs. Not one of the women is career focused, and they wouldn't be expected to be. This is not a slight, it's just how it was.

@Xty100 You’d be surprised to find that the original movie actually changed much more of the lyrics than the remake movie did. I only discovered the original play’s lyrics yesterday and was surprised at how different they were.
True. I am an immigrant in America and it's a little tougher for us when we arrive and that's OK. I love this country and would not live anywhere else!! The girls are correct, Life is great in America!!!
It's *definitely* better than most countries. But I think mainly what this scene was trying to show is that a lot of people think that as long as you live in America you will have a perfect life and be very rich and happy. But the reality is that we also have lots of problems here in America, just like all countries do.
This song is a work of art. Yes, the music is mesmerising, but it is the lyrics that are absolutely on a totally different level of genius. The lyrcis alone can serve as a basis for a few PhD works on immigration, gender and social issues.

This is one of my most favorite movie scenes. The staging and dancing and Leonard Bernstein's masterful music make it great. And uniquely American. The women sing to the pluses and promises of America. The men to the negatives. Sadly, 60 years later, not much has changed. However, we must keep dancing forward to America's promise. We will get there. We must get there.

The remake is pile of poo.
I prefer this version to the new one also.
I'm really obsessed with the costume design for this film. The choreography incorporates those skirts so well!
@George Rosewell chill. They liked the movement of the skirts, it was pretty. Why bring up something like that about the actor anyway

@@glendamcdaniel7287 hey former dancer here! 15 years, there are special types of high heals made specifically for dancing which are more comfortable. Woah it's crazy how realistic this portrays America. Yes we have the freedom to become *whatever* we want to be but yet most of Americans are working minimum-wage, low-skilled jobs surviving paycheck to paycheck.
This is absolutely my favourite line of the song. It's still relevant and it doesn't just apply to minorities either.
Well I think the implication was that the foreigners specifically have those jobs, not just Americans in general

That “Better get rid of your accent” line is so ironic because they made Rita morena put on a ridiculous fake accent
ridiculous fake? I have friends and some relatives that sound like that... not cool
Marcus sorry I didn’t mean to be rude. I also have relatives with Hispanic accents, that sound nothing like that. Even Rita Moreno said that the accent was ridiculous. All those actors in brown face with fake accents are disgusting to me.
@@2sadlilmexies we all did understand what you meant honey dont worry 😂
I work customer service and have a Spanish accent, it's really annoying when some customers bring it up. Some will say, what country are you in? Or "can you transfer me to someone who speaks English?" even though I speak English fluently and I'm in the US. Having an accent makes me feel like an outsider so I've been trying really hard to get rid of it!
@@V.E.R.O. @Veronica C. Heavy, heavy irony in these lyrics but the energy, humour and commitment of these artists make the race issue seem light hearted. I too was a bit teary in the face of such exciting brilliance.
Especially now.
Yep, Rita's lyrics sound like they were written by Donald Trump. Biting zynism and they still have the same meaning like they did 56 years ago.
You've been... Sondheimized. ; )
Hmm...the fact that you think the lyrics sound like anything written by Trump show more cynicism than anything expressed by lyrics themselves.
Yeah because most of these “puerto ricans” were portrayed by white actors in brown-face. All of them except for maybe 2 or 3. And this “love” story was written by white men.

Remember, the ladies did their dancing in high heels!!
I like Bernardo and Anita there the power couple of this movie.
AMEN To That!!!! :)
This song captures the post war dream of the 1950's....perfectly. When I see this I think of the dreams and enthusiasm of my parent's in their youth.
the best thing they did to this song was to change who is singing. in the broadway version, it is a song between the women. moving it to have it be a dance between the men and the women was masterful. the sexual tension in the music and the acting is phenomenal and makes the song just sooooo much better.
They’re going to do the same with the film remake
Interesting, thank you for that
More than sexual tension, it highlights the contrasting viewpoints and is much more critical of America than the original stage version.

I love when her expression and when she goes ''Oooooo'' after she says ''You forget I'm in America''.. I have the feeling that Rita Moreno did that on her own without direction. A timeless masterpiece of a number and movie

Yesssss...👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
It's film not live, so they can just keep going and cut up all the bits of many different takes to make the final cut.
This is one instance where the movie dancing is superior to some stage revivals I have seen.
For me I think what makes this movie adaptation so great is probably the camera work. The cinematography is part of the choreography, whereas on stage ur just looking at all the dancers all at once.
It is also the editing. If you examine the cuts closely frame-by-frame, you will notice some of the cuts are from two entirely different takes.
Glorious Scene!
Imagine if all discussions about the social and political atmosphere of America went like this.

the camera angle on this scene is awesome. From the bottom (feet) angle that made you feel you were there live in broadway, to the close up while the camera moves with the cast that made you feel you were part of the ensemble, to the top so you can appreciate the line and the synchronicity of the dancer. Far outstrips SITR

True Rafferty Great observation. One of those things you perceive at the preconscious level until someone brings it to your attention consciously.
ah the ol american dream
there are literally hundreds of books/movies out there that say you can't achieve it unless you're white and rich ( with the exception of Gatsby )
The men have to face the reality of going out and working. The women get to enjoy the greater material benefits provided to them.

Then I'm glad you're here!
It's *definitely* better than most countries. But I think mainly what this scene was trying to show is that a lot of people think that as long as you live in America you will have a perfect life and be very rich and happy. But the reality is that we also have lots of problems here in America, just like all countries do.
I mean there are many other countries more friendly towards immigrants than america

This song is a work of art. Yes, the music is mesmerising, but it is the lyrics that are absolutely on a totally different level of genius. The lyrcis alone can serve as a basis for a few PhD works on immigration, gender and social issues.
This is not an academic exercise - it is a Broadway musical (comedy)....which is entertainment and fictional.
Imagine being so obsessed with your woke ideology, that a song with predictable pro immigrant rhetoric somehow is worth a PHD. That is an insult to people who have actually worked hard for PHDs.

This is one of my most favorite movie scenes. The staging and dancing and Leonard Bernstein's masterful music make it great. And uniquely American.
