Wow that was a nice bit of information that I didn’t know. I just recently saw the movie of her life on the National Geographic channel, and made me realize what a great and phenomenal talent she was. I was to young to understand what a great voice that she had. But I remembered her song Respect and how I loved that song ( I believe that I was 5-6 years old at the time). RIP Ms Aretha Franklin. 💐
This movie really showcases the many talents that somewhat obscure black singers were overlooked . The Motown sound and dancing was so very terrific . I know this is a bit later than the Temptations , 4 tops , Supremes , days at Motown . Don't ever think that Lady Souls voice can ever be duplicated . This film has been so over looked ,granted later generations would not appreciate really ,the amazing talent , voices this movie showcases . Or the way it spoofs on the " trendy " cowboy music at the time , when it was rivaling the disco scene .The movie has historical lessons concerning trendy musical themes . One thing for certain , Aretha's voice is just the best of all time , as every nowadays , will refer to it as the GOAT .Thanks for all the unbelievable vocals . THIS SCENE IS HISTORIC
I love how he's supposed to be putting his foot down, but the musician in him can't help breaking into a wide grin of appreciation when Aretha starts singing.

Yes, they made it as a tribute to all the great blues / R&B artists that people were forgetting about at the time. Literally resurrected several careers.
For those of us who grew up in this time and lived in the region in 1979-80 when they were filming this, I love how they captured the look and feel of Chicago from this time, the cars, the fashion/clothes, hairstyles, etc, and the outlying city. I wonder who suggested that they dance? It just adds to the surreal nature of it. Aretha should have acted in more things, but she would have blown everyone else off the screen.
The blues brothers r amazing but there was no way they were even going to try to sing WITH the legend herself. I bet they decided to just backup dance and let the queen go to work
This performance is one of the best I've ever seen. Aretha and the ensemble just kicks ass! The sass, the delivery, the perfect saxophone. Bless the Blues Brothers.
I love that Jake and Elwood HAD to get in the backup line and dance, too. Even though it was against their mission - a singer needs backup. Love Aretha in her pink scuffs.
One of the greatest cameos in the history of cinema. The crazy thing is this is actually what the 70s were like, people would just burst into soul music at the drop of a hat. It was EXHAUSTING.
Respect and woke are two different things. Aretha earned that with soul and talent. Can't hear her without smiling - watch Akroyd's expression during the scene and he can barely help himself.
I was kid when I watched this movie and didn't know much about Aretha Franklin and was simply blown away at this performance. Still blows me away to this day.
Her voice was one of kind and she will be missed, RIP Queen Aretha. I think I can speak with confidence for my whole country when I say lots of love from the UK.
No matter how many times I watch this ... I am still amazed with how powerful Aretha's voice was! And a great all around song! I just love musicals too!!
AMEN - I love that I am old enough to remember the BB on SNL - hearing Soul Man for the first time was a transcendental experience for this grade school kid.
This is the greatest homage to American musical talent. I am so glad this was made and would love to see it released back to the theaters. Fun fact, the postal worker and customer in the shorts providing back up vocals are Ms. Franklin's real-life sisters.
As much as I love Aretha’s singing, I can never get over how funny it is that when she starts singing, Blue Lou can hear her and blatantly decides “Hell yeah, time to play sax again!” It MAKES the song but it makes no sense regarding whose side he should be on. All the more funnier when Jake and Elwood join in as backup dancers.
At the end of the song when Matt Murphy walks out with Jake & Elmwood and Blue Lou looks at Aretha like a little puppy dog with that "please" look on his face she tells him, "Well go on, dammit!" She knows his talent was being wasted washing dishes.
I have adored Aretha Franklin's voice since 1968. I was 11 when I first heard her on the radio. Since then I have had a life long love of her. Her soulful delivery of song has been unmatched in the genre of R and B. I attended a concert that she held in the 2000's. It was a dream come true. Needless to say the news of her demise was heartbreaking. This clip brings so much joy to me. I simply adored her like so many others.
Her "demise" makes connotation she was killed..... Just say how you felt lovingly respectfully that you openly felt sad hearing the news of her death..
I love how Blue Lou kept his sax on hand, because you never know when you might have a spontaneous musical event happen in a diner. He was a true professional.
The sax accompaniment really takes this version to another level. If you listen to the original you really miss it.
Guy knew he lived in a musical comedy world.
Similarly, Matt "Guitar" Murphy somehow had his guitar in its case and ready to go at the end of the counter.
I like how he is waiting for her permission at the end!!
My sense of humor exactly! What a classic.
The singing is obviously untouchable but can we just appreciate her acting here as well? She's glorious

WOW did not know this. Thanks for sharing.
Did not know that. I thought I saw the backup singers before. Thanks!
Brown Sugar! How come you dance so good?
Ah thank you for sharing that! I had no idea! Amazing talents!
The musical talent in this film never ceases to amaze me. NOBODY phoned it in and they all knocked it out of the park.
The performances in the sequel are not too shabby either..
@@mikekaatman3194 Sorry, great performances aside that movie NEVER HAPPENED.
Look up the Cab Calloway "oh you wanted great? Why didn't you say so" story.
This movie is just beyond legendary.
I love how he's supposed to be putting his foot down, but the musician in him can't help breaking into a wide grin of appreciation when Aretha starts singing.
Murphy was a guitar player. Never even pretended to be an actor. His faux pas is just another endearing feature of this masterpiece.
Thx for reminding me of this. I remember noticing it in the theater.
Just remembering when Hollywood could make a movie worth watching a hundred times and enjoy the ride.
Yep...im off to watch the 1st terminator in the cinema tomorrow night...only time I go is to watch old movies... nowadays the people who get their movies made are so woke and so different from the general public they don't get it why no one wants to watch them.
They don’t want to pay for the talent that created those great movies. Big name stars hardly guarantee a great movie
Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Gospel.
As many have said AAA MEN
Yrs she is. Her voice is legendary.

Nobody can compare to Aretha. this woman broke barriers and gave the world a standard in music that not many have came close to. RIP
Not too many think of this movie as a musical, but it's filled with great songs sung by fantastic legends. I love this musical.
it is a musical ... the greatest musical of all time
When you watch a musical and forgot you watch a musical ...
Possibly the last great movie musical. Especially if you consider live-action, original story (as opposed to animated movies or movie versions of stage musicals)
Yes, they made it as a tribute to all the great blues / R&B artists that people were forgetting about at the time. Literally resurrected several careers.
@@DesignRhythm it's really a homage by a bunch of white people to Black music from the 1970s,
Decades later and I am still incredibly jealous of everyone in the room during that glorious performance!
...you do realize it's an overdub right? the recording is great but it's not performed live lol
@@SpencerAGuitar I really don’t care. I enjoy what I am seeing and I am getting to see a legend perform. That’s all that matters to me.
@@SpencerAGuitar But you'd still have been *in the room during that performance!!*
@@SpencerAGuitar So you think they were just miming during the shoot?
There was only one Aretha. There will never be another.
You said it so sweetly. Stay safe, and may God go with you.
She was a music hit song machine 1960s/1970s
The only woman who could outsing Pavarotti.
Aretha was and still is one of the worlds greatest musicians. Presidents wept at her funeral.
For those of us who grew up in this time and lived in the region in 1979-80 when they were filming this, I love how they captured the look and feel of Chicago from this time, the cars, the fashion/clothes, hairstyles, etc, and the outlying city. Watching this in blu-ray high-def is like a time machine. Fantastic memories
The car crash scene is unreal -- what, a 40-car pile-up?? Chicago drivers!
I think Ferris Bueller's Day Off is the closest a movie has come to celebrating Chicago the way it is celebrated in The Blues Brothers.
Don't forget 16 Candles out in the suburbs. So many great movies from there in that time. Oh....and shout out to "Briefcase Full of Blues" album by the Blues Brothers - opening act at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. Didn't take me too long to figure out why there were soo many Togos and Blue Brothers sideburns at the keggers in the frat houses nearby back then. Sweet memories - don't think another musical will top this one EVER....
Can't watch this without a tear in my eyes. Never ever will there be a voice and presence like Aretha simply stunningly beautiful.
She is the same person whether she is wearing pink slippers and an apron or fur and diamonds. There is a message there too.
Before she sings her first note in this....Aretha establishes herself as THE one to watch out for. Her dialogue is delivered perfect.....followed by the singing. Can't get enough of just about everything in this movie.
She obviously put her all into this performance Acting and Singing all on point A small role but she made it count unforgettable
@02:00 "The Blues Brothers? Shiiiiit. They still owe you money fool". That always gets me.
Don’t you blaspheme in here. Don’t you blaspheme in here!
Love it
❤😂😂
Aretha, Matt Guitar Murphy, Jake and Elwood. How could it not be great?
"Don't you blaspheme in here! Don't you blaspheme in here!" Aretha Franklin is really missed.
"they still owe you money fool., " "they look like Hasidic diamond merchants." " they look liket they are from the CIA or sumptin." Funny lines, and exceptional singing.
@@mt3311 MOTOWN LEGEND . WENT TO HER FUNERAL BACK IN DETROIT WHEN IT WAS MY HOME , NOW HERE I,AM IN K.Y
Or, as the subtitles put it:
don't you black seem in here don't you blast him in here
I cried when I heard her sing “natural woman” at the Kennedy center. She rocked the house.
So many greats from this film sadly gone from this world.
dan is still alive i think
Yes he is.
Yeah from Darryl Drivs of Moorestown resident brings fresh beats to Eagles songs, how about bringing back the soup of Eagles Super Bowl Champions again. Yeah our Philadelphia Eagles team did it well. Music number: *happens*
Jake and Elwood: guess we’re backup dancers now.
😂😂 never even thought of that!
Well, they know what a performance is meant to be, and maybe if they dance for her she'll change her mind?
I wonder who suggested that they dance? It just adds to the surreal nature of it.
Aretha should have acted in more things, but she would have blown everyone else off the screen.
The blues brothers r amazing but there was no way they were even going to try to sing WITH the legend herself. I bet they decided to just backup dance and let the queen go to work
@@tjejojyj was only in 2 movies, both Blues Brothers movoe
This performance is one of the best I've ever seen. Aretha and the ensemble just kicks ass! The sass, the delivery, the perfect saxophone. Bless the Blues Brothers.
Anyone who can do a dance scene wearing pink mules will always be a legend.
“Let’s boogie”... sublime. Ms. Franklin gave so much joy to the world. She’ll never be forgotten.
I love that Jake and Elwood HAD to get in the backup line and dance, too. Even though it was against their mission - a singer needs backup.
Love Aretha in her pink scuffs.
Aretha's voice is just amazing. I keep coming back to this scene. Its awesome! May she rest in peace!
What a voice. Aretha actually out-screamed Lou's sax. Who knows if we'll ever hear a voice like her's again.
Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, epic SNL movie of all time!
John Lee Hooker 💪
Dont forget james brown
Or even shaka kahn
@@milanbeerepoot4260 Don't DARE forget the man with THE CROWN: James BROWN!!
The second movie just wasn't the same without them. :(
@@georgegates526 You said it.
4:14 Jake and Elwood join the line dance. Freaking genius direction.
I've always wondered if that was written in the original script or added after a couple of rehearsals?
“Don’t you blaspheme in here!” Yassssssssss, Queen Aretha! 🙌🏿
My ABSOLUTE favourite film. I could watch it 1,000 times! ❤ 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I didn't recognize Aretha until she started to sing. Her voice is incredible, the queen of soul!
Same, first time I saw it. Blew me away.
She is one of the great vocalists of all time and her music will outlive all of us. Such a rare, special, talent.
I´ll never get tired of watching this masterpiece!
Same here
Uma obra prima mesmo! Do caralho!
One of the greatest cameos in the history of cinema. The crazy thing is this is actually what the 70s were like, people would just burst into soul music at the drop of a hat. It was EXHAUSTING.
Not a lot of people accusing Jake or Elwood of being woke. Turns out respect is timeless.
Respect and woke are two different things. Aretha earned that with soul and talent. Can't hear her without smiling - watch Akroyd's expression during the scene and he can barely help himself.
It's a one of a kind movie and should have one an Oscar
Totally Agree - a masterpiece.
I think the woman who played the nun (I forget her name) did win an Oscar for this movie. Best Supporting Actress maybe
Yepyep
The fact that after all that he still gets up and leaves creases me to the moon and back
I was kid when I watched this movie and didn't know much about Aretha Franklin and was simply blown away at this performance. Still blows me away to this day.
Not only an outstanding singer, she does also a perfect acting.
Her voice was one of kind and she will be missed, RIP Queen Aretha. I think I can speak with confidence for my whole country when I say lots of love from the UK.
Her normal speaking voice comes across like music. Pure magic!
this video never gets old
Omg.. it’s 43years old! And yes your right.🎶
Have literally seen this movie over 30 times. It NEVER gets old. Great cast, great plot, GREAT music.
And funny as hell.
Only 30 times? 😅
Yeah but the acting was...well... sub par would be nice. The music more than made up for it
I have Jake and Elwood life size figures. They need restoring. Elwood is missing two fingers and both need repainting. I'm on a mission from God.
No matter how many times I watch this ... I am still amazed with how powerful Aretha's voice was!
And a great all around song! I just love musicals too!!
Did anyone catch Aretha's facial change when Jake said: What we're asking Matt to do is a holy thing? Whooooo, wouldn't want to mess with that look...
Damn straight! Aretha says, "Jum;p!", you ask how high when you're on the way up!
Thing is though, they're not blaspheming, they really think they are on a mission from God
Them two white guys out there! Never allowed these days.
Don't you blaspheme in here!
@Lem Lovel Which is the kind of thinking that leads to people being tied to stakes and set on fire
Absolute Joy, still makes the heart race so many decades later. Perfection.
We really are lucky to live in a period of history where the great voices like Aretha Franklin will live on forever
I LOVE that "They still owe you money, fool!" Aretha blew this scene away!
RIP Aretha you and your great voice will truly be missed. Nobody sings like she did.
Some pop culture nostalgia of the best decade ever, the 1980's.
Every time something from these times comes up I feel privileged to have been part of the generation that got to hear and appreciate this music .
Exactamundo
AMEN - I love that I am old enough to remember the BB on SNL - hearing Soul Man for the first time was a transcendental experience for this grade school kid.
Saw this when I was a little kid and it's still one of the best movies of all time. All the greats were in Blues Brothers.
If you saw it when you were a kid, I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather. BUT, I agree with you 100%!!!! One of the best movies of all-time.
I saw this too when I was little and I loved it! This was actually my introduction to Aretha💗
This is the greatest homage to American musical talent. I am so glad this was made and would love to see it released back to the theaters. Fun fact, the postal worker and customer in the shorts providing back up vocals are Ms. Franklin's real-life sisters.
Just one sister Carolyn the one in the middle
One was a sister, one was a cousin, the other was an unrelated long-time backup singer. All three had been backup singers for Aretha.
12 часов ночи и вместо того, чтобы пойти спать, я зависла на старых песнях. Господи, как же это прекрасно!!!!!!!!!! ❤❤❤
''you aint going to slidin' around with your white hoodlum friends" LOVE THIS MOVIE
Wow Aretha Franklins voice sends shivers amazing woman
As much as I love Aretha’s singing, I can never get over how funny it is that when she starts singing, Blue Lou can hear her and blatantly decides “Hell yeah, time to play sax again!” It MAKES the song but it makes no sense regarding whose side he should be on. All the more funnier when Jake and Elwood join in as backup dancers.
Trying to get them outta music smashing *_THAT_* tune?! ... 😑 Mistake!
Much love to "Blue Lou" ❤
That theme happens on a lot of the musical. Everyone is united for the song lol
At the end of the song when Matt Murphy walks out with Jake & Elmwood and Blue Lou looks at Aretha like a little puppy dog with that "please" look on his face she tells him, "Well go on, dammit!" She knows his talent was being wasted washing dishes.
@@michaelclark9762 And hers is being wasted running a restaurant!!!
This is my favorite version of this song. Bass line is absolutely thumpin.
Bass line driving hard👍
I introduced my daughter to this. She loves it! 19 years old she is!!!
❤❤❤
I have adored Aretha Franklin's voice since 1968. I was 11 when I first heard her on the radio. Since then I have had a life long love of her. Her soulful delivery of song has been unmatched in the genre of R and B. I attended a concert that she held in the 2000's. It was a dream come true. Needless to say the news of her demise was heartbreaking. This clip brings so much joy to me. I simply adored her like so many others.
Her "demise" makes connotation she was killed..... Just say how you felt lovingly respectfully that you openly felt sad hearing the news of her death..
Matt "Guitar" Murphy! What a nice man he was, great musician! (RIP Matt)...great video! :)
He was a great and played with a lot of other legends in his lifetime.
Matt Guitar Murphy pass to
Oh man the blues losing great ones
What queen of soul. With a tremendous sense of humor. Chicago so proud of her gracing Chicago. An honor
