I know this is a year later, sorry! But long long ago, that was what they had for fun, socializing, competition, dating. And it worked! So many folks could dance, did dance, tried to get better at it( competition). There was something to do at parties. Always- I still experienced it in the 60, 70s, 80s. We would watch the shows on Friday, try to do the dances Friday nights or Saturday nights. Was fun, and you got to be very close to someone you crushed on! Good times. I hope you have kept up dancing. Worlds greatest pastime.

The first movie I ever remember seeing, I remember from the amazing jitterbug & Lindy Hop choreographies. I was 3 in 1942 & I can still recall the dance sequences. It might have been Hellzapoppin. I remember there were black and white dancers and musicians. It was a WW2 movie in black and white. I loved it. I am blessed with parents who could't afford a babysitter,
and went to the movies at last once a week, taking their baby, toddler, little kid with them. I became a singer and I credit it to Judy garland and the Andrew Sisters. I'm 83, still love to dance & sing.

Is wish you'd also included that when touching on the routine.

When I started this video, I was hoping you'd include the scene withe Jean Veloz in "Swing Fever". I'm gratified that you did. I had the privilege to dance with her in 2007 (or was it 2006?) at the Spanish Ballroom at Echo Park near Washington DC. It was a joy, even though I could never rise to the skill she still had.
I'm kind of disappointed that you didn't call out Frankie Manning from "Hellsapoppin' ", though. He had more influence on the spread of swing dancing out of Harlem that Jean Veloz. After attending an event that Frankie Manning attended, when I signed up for swing dance lessons in 2006, I told the lady that I wanted to be able to dance like Frankie Manning. She responded, "You want to dance like an 83-year-old man?" I replied, "No. I want to dance like THAT 83-year-old man!"

A wonderful compilation. I kept hoping to see "Let Yourself Go" from the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers film "Follow the Fleet." I can see why it is not included--it is their attempt to capture that swing energy in a tap number, rather than portraying an actual dance hall. But the number does include shots of two other couples "challenging" the main pair with their steps, and according to Arlene Croce in her book "Fred and Ginger" they were top-notch amateurs. There is also the homage to the Lindy in the number "Shorty George" by Fred and Rita Hayworth in "You Were Never Lovelier."

While ANYONE can do the basic swing steps, these performers doing aerials in these clips are professionals and have practiced these moves and specifically with each other to develop deep amounts of trust that the other person will perform as they are supposed to not only look good, but to do the move SAFELY! It takes tons of trust to allow someone to throw you up into the air. You should never do an aerial with someone you have not danced with before AND TRUST implicitly, because doing an aerial wrong can get you hurt and in some cases hurt badly.
I know it doesn't LOOK that dangerous as you don't seem to be that far off the ground, but as in gymnastics and cheerleading, falling from 10 feet in the air to the ground can injure you, so just be careful.

Preach. Years ago a dance instructor here in town had the dumbass idea that because she watched Swing Kids, she could teach swing dance. She was actually teaching the aerials in class (again, her only training was watching a movie), having students throw each other around and as a result kids were ending up with concussions or worse. As lawsuits piled up, the studio almost closed its doors for good. Just a side note, it's one thing to watch Newsies a thousand times and memorize the dance moves, that's one thing but you CAN'T DO THAT WITH SWING DANCE!!!!
The studio I went to and the teacher I had, only taught basic lifts. She had years of training and had the common sense not to have first year students throwing each other around.

      @@PrincessBunheadThat sounds like a HORROR MOVIE!! 😨
So glad to hear it was closed down, but it sure sounds like it should've been closed down as soon as she even started THINING about having beginner children doing such moves 😵
Also happy to hear that your own dance instructor wasn't like *_that_* idiot!

Bounce me Brother is one of my favourite dance clips. In fact, the featured dancers in your clip, at the guy Dean Collins was featured in at least two of you other clips, One with the same partner, Jewel (cant think of her last name). Man could she Swivel.

That was Jewel McGowan with Dean Collins. And in one clip he was dancing with someone named Brennda Lee. ( I dont think it was THAT Brenda Lee)

Some other swing styles in film:
Blondie meets the boss 1939: Collegiate Shag
The Gentle Sex 1943: St Louis Shag
    Start Cheering 1938 - Balboa
College Swing 1938 - Solo Charleston in a 3 Stooge-like comedy act with Bob Hope, George Burns and Ben Blue

The Lindy Hoppers! Never mentioned enough. Brendon Fraser's Blast From The Past is great. Didn't Judy Garland swing dance in a movie? Plus others mentioned in these comments. Obviously swing dancing is still much loved. 😊

I think you may have missed the greatest swing dance scene ever….The “Red Blues” scene from “Silk Stockings” featuring Cyd Charisse.

I don't like the 10th one chosen because I think to feel like an authentic swing dance it has to have the right music.

dudes, of course I agree with your picks, but Whitey's Lindyhoppers are not "among the greatest swing dancers of all times", they are literally , personally the creators of Lindy Hop.
