The Berzerker is an underrated gem, we can only hope Luke finally finishes what he started with the 6th album 2 years ago. I'm still holding out for it. Nothing like The Berzerker will ever happen again, but I'm so glad we got what we got. \m/
I've worked with Gary Thomas for several years. He's got a family and a mortgage, he's never been big headed about what he's done, very humble and definitely one of the nicest crustiest men you could ever meet with a good sense of humor. Like all people who's gone out and done it he's got a different view point from the person who watches someone else do it, and wants to try different things from life
Cheers Charles for your insight! I've always wondered what he went on to do. Easily one of the most insane drummers of all time! Thank you for this. Take care out there!
Werewolves is hysterical and relentless, totally worth checking out. They even have a song with a death metal haiku in it. Also, there was recently a 200 edition picture disc release of the Dissimilate album. Just last year.
Sam did an interview on into the necrosphere apparently he wanted to call their last record "now that's what i call toxic masculinity", but apparently some markets wouldn't see that it was a joke.
The Berzerker definitely lead me to discovering even wilder projects in the future. Wouldn't have learned about Passenger of Shit or Shitwank records entirely if it wasn't for their melding of Speedcore and Metal.
Me and a friend of mine got heavily influenced by The Berzerker at the age of 13-14. Must have been 99/00. We were browsing Napster for the most extreme stuff available at that time. They got us to record a casiogrind demo tape called Eisenhüttenstadt, the 23 old treasure is still alive on tape reportedly.
I may be a bit late, but Dissimulate was released on vinyl (picture disk). It is still in stock on Earache's website after being released in August 2021.
The Berzerker was also a big part of my childhood/puberty and still love them a lot so very nice to see such a similar detailed story, also regarding the speedcore
@@linesinwax4996 I think it was swansea where they played an all dayer with Desecration, Black eye riot, taint and shaped by fate (the big four welsh underground metal bands back in the day), . I remember that show because BER went onstage drunk as but were on fire because of it so the other bands had to up their game, was actually my first gig in swansea after I moved there for uni.
THE REASON THAT THE LINEUP FLUCTUATED SO MUCH WAS THAT SAM HOOKED UP WITH A FRIEND OF MINE ON TOUR AND MOVED TO THE UK. THEN ED VISITED AND HOOKED UP WITH ANOTHER FRIEND AND ALSO MOVED TO THE UK. SAM AND EDDIE WERE STILL INVOLVED IN WRITING AND RECORDING THOUGH OFTEN WENT UNCREDITED.
David gray was a full member of the berzerker for a year, it fell apart because Sam was living in England and quit for a while and Matt and David made akercocke their full time priority, I spoke to David Gray about that show in Ponty(I'm originally from Blackwood) in Bristol recently where I know live, he said he enjoyed that tour. Although David did say in an into the necrosphere interview that his new gig as the drummer for Anaal Nathrakh is a similar vibe to the berzerker. Also Matt was writing berzerker esque material when he also joined ted maul when he was living in London, ted maul’s first record is savage if they had made a second with Matt wow. Digby said on his ask earache blog about why he separated his relationship with the Berzerker "the project wasn't progressing the way that Luke told us it would".
It’s nice to meet one of the other idk 15 or 20 people who were at that gig! Haha If I recall that was the second tour with Dave Gray, the first time was touring World Of Lies and they played TJs with Happy Face. Cheers for your insights man there’s a few bits here that I missed, nice one. I’ve never really gotten into Ted Maul, I’ll have to give that album a try. Cheers!
I forgot to mention there were Four bands that were similar back then The berzerker, Anaal Nathrakth and The Axis of Perdition and their drummers were absolute monsters The berzerker (Gary Thomas/David Gray), Anaal Nathrakth (Nick Barker, Danny from Napalm) oh and the Axis of Perdition who had dan mullins behind the kit, a lot of people thought Dan could only play slow because he was best known for My dying bride, but listen to his drumming with the axis he's an absolute beast. It showed how things had moved on when dragged into sunlight joined the party. The fourth band was another earache band called December wolves (who later evolved into trap them- didn't include them because DW had no drummer), they were doing the industrial meets grindcore meets black metal thing and were extreme with it, all the bands took the agoraphobic nosebleed mould and ran with it to it's logical extreme.
Also was reminded of this by someone recently one of the drum and bass/gabba kids who used to post on the berzerker forum back in the day grew up to be rob swire from pendulum. So when rob says he was influenced by the the berzerker back in the day he's not saying it to appear scene he's legit. His main influences were the berzerker, pitchshifter, pop will eat itself and the prodigy.
Yes, absolutely! I love Mortician. I just got one of their Christmas jumpers, actually. That should raise a few questions at the dinner table. Mortician is also actually very much on the cards for a retrospective. Have you heard Roger’s side project Grind.bot? (I think it’s called something like that) I really like Devourment too, love all their stuff but especially the earlier slammier stuff. Obscene Majesty did surprise me though, that was a good album. Glad you enjoyed the retrospectives, thank you for reaching out and letting me know. Need to pull my finger out and start the next one! Cheers!
In regards to those Re-awakening remixes, the band ran a competition on their Myspace page for remixes. If you emtered theyd send you the stems of one or two of the albums tracks nd left you at it, with the winners of course getting featured in the final release. So they are all fanmade....and no...mine didnt get picked 😅 But been going back and listening to these guys recently, big nostalgia from my teens. Remember seeing them in Newport TJs in about 2007/2008 and Sam was touring with them. Absolutely lovely chap but Luke was a bit standoffish by comparison...although we bumped into him at Wacken later that year and he was super chillz taking a good chunk of time to talk to us and take some photos so I always put it down to just being in "gig mode"
Was that the gig they did with RSJ and Happy Face? I remember the competition, I probably should have mentioned that! I wonder how many unused remixes are floating around in the ether 😀 Cheers for commenting!

Yeah fingers crossed! I certainly hope it sees the light of day, that would be great after all these years.
Probably stuck mixing the damn thing lol
I met them when I was 13 years old in 2007 and it was a helluva experience. I miss them

@@werewolvesdeathmetal That's awesome. Just realised I was referencing Jackie's joke as yours haha.
Garry was thrown down a set of stairs in NYC and broke his leg in a few places.
Any video about The Berzerker is a good video
Right back at you dude! Nice to see people still giving this stuff love after all these years
God this channel is so underrated love your discography retrospective series so much
That’s very kind, thank you. Glad you like the videos!
Watching this one now after Mushroomhead and Cradle of Filth - I agree theyre really informative and entertaining 🤟
The Berzerker definitely lead me to discovering even wilder projects in the future. Wouldn't have learned about Passenger of Shit or Shitwank records entirely if it wasn't for their melding of Speedcore and Metal.
Probably my favorite band at least top three for sure

Pig destroyer would be a nice one man. Loved this btw. 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Thank you! Pig Destroyer is not a bad shout at all, gives me an excuse to get back into the later stuff which I’m not so familiar with.
They played a heavy bass sounding song near the end of their Edmonton show many years ago and have not been able to find it.
I found out about The Berzerker deep in my cybergrind phase I had when I was a teenager. Pretty brutal band! Good job on this video.
Thank you!
Did you have one of the many seemingly thousands of MySpace cybergrind projects? Haha
@@linesinwax4996 Nope! But I was a fan of Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Wecamewithbrokenteeth.
I should probably do a video on Agoraphobic Nosebleed. I really miss that “band”
@@linesinwax4996 me too, although that pivot toward doom metal that they did on the last album I didn’t really like that much.

This is an excellent retrospective and a quality amount of attention to very buried detail has gone into it, excellent work 👍
Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Loving these, any chance of an Akercocke one?
Yes! That’s a great idea, I love that band
Very amazing overview man!! Total respect
Cheers!

Such an under rated band, I saw them live in Exeter years ago, I still don’t think I’ve recovered, Desecration we’re on the bill too, brutal stuff.
Nice lineup! Desecration are fantastic too.

Will have to dig out my remix. It's embarrassingly BTEC
Wow, Nochaa! Now you’ve got me going down memory lane. I want to say the other bands were Ultimate Trigger Mechanism (?) and Necrocest.
It was the song clip at 4:51 what is it
It’s “Archie 1” from the Archie Campbell EP :)
there is some new material but just few seconds
Cheers for the heads up - I need to go searching
Gary left the band after attacking a fan, also I heard he did time for stabbing his next door neighbor but I can not confirm that
Blimey I never heard that before, that’s not good if that’s true!
Not true. He left the band after getting injured getting bounced by a bouncer after a show in Poughkeepsie, NY on the first Summer Slaughter tour.
Honestly the shit people hear.
I wish I was born earlier so I could have seen them live earlier 😢
You never know what can happen 👀
