    I find this absolutely fascinating! I’ve been a shamanic practitioner for about 10 years now, and his philosophical perspective is very close to what I am learning & experiencing with my spirit guides. The one difference, which shifts the entire philosophy into something optimistic, is that we little blips of individuated consciousness/will do have choice and free will. And our choices shape the evolution of The Will over eons. So not only can we strive to grow and mature, but doing so grows and matures the whole of consciousness. No pressure, humanity. 😂

      I think the mind is pluripotent. Whatever one believes it can do, it can do. Faith/trust in the power of the mind is the main driving force towards its efficacy. Greater faith, greater will-power.

      Finally someone with a similar experience. I usually have this, too, and it is not awful but feels liberating in the same way that truth liberates. You have to be prepared to stare into the abyss, however. Only once it got a little too much for me when I had read that Lovecraft was inspired by Schopenhauer and started associating Cthulhu with the will, granting metaphysical heavyweight to Lovecraft's fantastical mythology. It was on a grim january afternoon. During the first couple of hours I had already shivered all the time and lay in bed enveloped into my blanket listening to music. When I finally went out and took a walk, it was already getting dark. Where I live, I have to walk past the sewage treatment plant to really get out into the green. Together with the weather and the time of day, that really was a terrible setting. There was the typical industrial background noise, and the fog kept reflecting the floodlights. At that point I started to feel that the very earth I was walking on was itself the body of Cthulhu. There were even some dead birds lying around, which almost made me panic. Later that day when the peak was over and I was having dinner, I felt that I myself was the all-consuming Cthulhu... consuming not only everything outside itself, but itself as well. But that trip was an exception. I usually see more light than darkness.

    Nice dip into this genius, the profundity of mesmerism, pessimism, philosophy, and magic as well. Cute puppy and kitty, too. It’s most refreshing to consider that the ultimate of pessimists became something of an optimist in his waning days. For a few, however, hope rings eternally as ‘riz said.

I think they warped the final product of his work.

    Oh my gosh, that Wolverine reference made me choke on my drink, lol. Every viewer can always count on Dr Sledge for that sly pop culture reference ❤. What an interesting philosopher. As a modern witch, we focus our intent on a magical working , very much in the way he describes the “will”. In some ways, the way he talks about the will seems almost Buddhist to me, but I must admit my knowledge is not great. Wow. To have a conversation with this guy must have been intense.

      @QuasarEE 22 дня назад +3

      As a Buddhist, it definitely rings with similarities, at first. The main point of divergence is the nihilistic assertion of there being no way out, since the whole point of Buddhism is to realize the unborn and unending Buddha nature and thus escape Samsara. Rather than saying there's "no good", we'd assert that good and bad lose their meaning when we do not attach to relative attributes. We wouldn't assert you can never know the fundamental truth as that's what the Buddha explains you can discover through meditation and practice. Finally, compassion is critical, and is why and how beings who have this level of realization continue to manifest into the world in forms fit to the need of the rest of us.

      @ about 6 1/2 minutes in, thereabouts, he has that image of the guy staring into space and he has a caption underneath saying something to the effect that he was about to have his bones fused with adamantium. It dawned on me that he has those hair wings that Wolverine has.

    • @lilykatmoon4508

      @ I did notice the extreme nihilism. It was just when he was saying how everything exists in the will that seemed to reflect Buddhism to an extent. Thank for the clarification and new information!

    I LOVE the juxtaposition of the adorable orange kitten in a sunny room being on screen as you drive home the utter nihilistic nature of Schopenhauer's metaphysics.

  • @sproglodyte

    I always liked Schopenhauer's philosophy but his views on women definitely made him one where you have to separate the man from his ideas.
    I had no idea about his research of the occult though. That is truly fascinating. Thank you for this episode.

    Wow! Schopenhauers concept of Ghost is nearly the same as mine, except that I believe ghosts are an electromagnetic (or perhaps quantum) scar on the fabric of space-time; similar to how a bolt of lightning which strikes the sand leaves an imprint in the medium of sand which, while not lightning anymore, can be experienced as a form of lightning's previous existence and violence.

    • @off6848

      There’s no quantum, they’re in the astral world which impresses itself upon the material from a supra stature giving animus
      Like a face impressed upon a coin but giving life and will to that which is dead

    When I did my philosophy undergraduate I mostly took courses on German philosophy. My prof once described Schopenhauer as “one parts Kant, one parts Plato, and one parts disaster”
