Robert Eggers already made Nosferatu (as a teen!): An Obsession with the Past, "narrated" by himself

- For all the Eggheads out there (of which I'm one): his first two films were fascinating, so I wanted to understand what made him tick. I believe I found the answer. Let me know if you agree or disagree with him.
It's too bad he'll probably never make a futuristic/sci-fi movie, because I'd love to see it, even if it derived from past classics.

When he's done with Nosferatu... I would love to see Eggers tackle Lovecraft head on, not just bits and pieces. Just full on 19th century cosmic horror with the Eggers obsession on details.

It is good that there is legit not a single good lovecraft movie. Cosmic Horror can not be caputered (like LotR a hundred years ago). If somebody can pull that off, it is him.
Shadow Over Innsmouth would be perfect Starting point. It's never gotten a serious treatment. It is my favorite Lovecraft story. It's encapsulated enough that it would be perfect for a movie but it sets up the pick for the Cthulhu Mythos in general. And the rotting North Shore town is perfect for eggers, I'm from Boston and I know what he means about the new England thing. I feel connected to the past in a way that maybe people from elsewhere don't.
He could really kick ass with a horror anthology series or something in that
I'd love to see a shadow over innsmouth he's perfect for it because he's from New England. I would transfer the town of Innsmouth to Maine instead though.. not to screw with the classic story but I feel like you have a little more leeway geographically if you put it in Maine because the North shore of Boston is very small it's hard to mentally jam it in there if you're from around here but if they came up with the device where it was actually in Maine there's so many little coves and inlets nooks and crannies on that coastline
He doesn't come across as an arrogant ,douchey director he comes across as someone I would like.. Although I used to see Eli Roth at raves , and I liked him. We weren't friends or anything but we were both ravers ( and no I never wore the big stupid pants you can't dance in those things)in the early nineties in Boston and we were friendly with the same groups of people so I bumped into him a couple times and I remember him saying he was going to make movies and I'm like "oh that's great" and im thinking" yeah that will never happen" I want to be a ninja but that ain't happening either but lo and behold, few years later hostel comes out.
This man would make such a perfect Blood Meridian adaptation.
It would undoubtedly be very decent, but I still think the Coens would be better suited, since they already perfectly adapted McCarthy.
There's a more obscure John Fowls novel called A Maggot I think Eggers would be more ideal for.
Making films in a time period instead of concessions for a contemporary audience. This statement is refreshing & I wish that more directors would follow his directorial example
Goddamn this was a great insight essay. I definitely had Eggers pegged wrong, but he somehow became more awesome when I learned what he was really about. I still have no clue how he managed to get the creative control and production design that only Kubrick, Leigh, and Fincher have been able to get, especially in this day and age.
We who love cinema are very fortunate to have Eggers. He's fucking brilliant.
I like his style of storytelling. I like the themes he addresses in his movies.
My favorite painting periods are the Baroque and Romanticism. To me, he captures the aura of those styles.
Absolutely magnificent.
Eggers should direct a Western. I bet he would deliver something incredible.
Okay, Lovecraft first, THEN a Western. The Western could be the "palate cleanser" if you will.

Robert is one of the only filmmakers his age that I follow very closely. He’s leagues above his peers.
No matter how much time passes and how much we learn, we're still humans. Don't forget that.
I saw his version of Nosferatu at the Edwin Booth Theater in Dover NH, EVERY week it ran (my friends and I went every weekend because it was so good). I am so excited for this movie!

There's a John Fowles novel I read recently called A Maggot, and watching this video, I think Eggers would hypothetically be ideal for bringing it to the screen.
What about Kafka's _Metamorphosis_ ?
@Theomite that's a choice, and not a bad choice... but I personally found the Metamorphosis really boring (it's been more than than 10 years since I read it, but I remember it being dull). Conceptually, I can totally picture Kafka being right up his alley, but in execution, it might be...again, boring. Maybe him doing maybe more like Arthur Machen or William Hope Hodgeson would be a far more interesting pairing.

This video is really well made! I honestly have no watched Eggers films yet but i have SUCH a fascination with them. Someday i want to become a director and after this vid it motivates me a lot to do so. He has an interesting way of making movies and it’s great from the stuff i’ve researched about him
That's awesome. Yes, he's intense when it comes to historical accuracy.
IMO, the Witch and the Lighthouse are among the best movies of the century so far. So I'm very much looking forward to his upcoming Nosferatu.
@@WayTooClose yeah it seems like it'll be really interesting! I want to watch his stuff beforehand but man, I am so interested in his stuff even without seeing his movies. I feel like The Lighthouse will be one of my favorites but who knows 🤷♂

loved the witches and the northman, alas the lighthouse was hard to swallow.....
I hope he keeps going with the archetypal monsters. Nosferatu is gonna be the freshest vampire film in a loooooong time. They’ll be scary again. I hope he gets a chance to do the same with with wear wolves, Frankenstein etc.

@@WayTooClose Yeah, I'm hoping Nosferatu will be among his best since he's been wanting to do it forever. I wonder if The Northman is lesser because he didn't have final cut; it pains me to consider there may have been a better cut the studio didn't let him release. If only the same fanaticism that existed for other directors existed for Eggers. Hopefully one day the mainstream audience recognizes him as the great artist he is
@@gregorydavidson2744 yeah, I think the Northman suffered from a few issues, like you said with him not having final cut, and also the biggest budget, and therefore the most pressure, he ever faced. There were also some pandemic restrictions that caused problems (not of his making, but they're there).
Interestingly enough, The Northman is the movie he said he got to be the most intentional with. He said in an interview that he'd notice glaring mistakes he made in The Witch and Lighthouse, but Northman was closest to how he imagined it to be.
Personally, I'm also not the biggest fan of The Northman.
Alright two things I want him to tackle after Nosferatu. The story of Beowulf. He's already made a Viking movie, he should be able to make another. The second one is stories set in the Medieval Era.
I hope he doesn’t do Beowulf. It will probably get him in trouble

We've already had 2 Beowulf movies: EATERS OF THE DEAD and Zemeckis' BEOWULF. I think it'd be great for him to do it as his swan song, but for now, he's better off going into Lovecraft, Western, or some fantasy direction. I do wonder if he could do Antiquity as well as he could do Medieval, but there's very few more up to the task than him.
@@Theomite Yeah true. A western made by him would be cool, but he grew up in New England so that’s where he mainly gets his inspiration.

Well he doesn't use metaphors or weird artist-speak. He can actually articulate his reasoning and thought processes in academic ways that can be clearly understood. I can't tell you how many interviews with artists where they go into great detail about their work and I don't understand a fucking thing they've said.
Francis cord Coppola alreadyy made Nosferatu (in the 90s!) I don’t see any need for this remake at all he could of atlesst made it a silent movie
Err no, big differences between nosferatu and Dracula. One was an unauthorized adaptation of stokers novel that changed up a lot but kept the basic meat and potatoes of the story and Francis ford Coppolas, despite some changes was a pretty faithful adaptation with a pinch of historical fact.

Yeah, the trailer made me think it's another Dracula adaptation rather than a remake of NOSFERATU. NOSFERATU became it's own thing in it's own way so doing straight-up Dracula doesn't seem to be a good idea. But for me, he's earned the benefit of a doubt.
@@cicolasnage5684 nosferatu was ordered by a judge to have all copies destroyed after the director was sued by brams wife or daughter idk, the only reason we know who nosferatu is is because a clip from SpongeBob we all saw as a kid. I rewatched the og and it’s literally just a worse version of Dracula which was done perfectly in the 90s

It's heartbreaking that this guy is so incredibly informed yet his stuff is trash. It makes all his references read like masturbation because apparently he gets off on thinking about and talking about it, but it doesn't translate into films that work.
