Darkthrone is one of those bands that I listened to all of their records when I was younger, however I just keep returning to the same ones which are obviously the Unholy Trinity with Under a Funeral Moon being my absolute favorite. However, from all the punkier, recent records I actually remember liking Circle the Wagons a lot, it definitely was Darkthrone in their most lighter, funnier side I would say
Transylvania Hunger is my fav album of Darkthrone. When I first heard it I wasn't keen by it but I later revisited it and absolutely loved it lol. Difficult to say if there are other bands that play exactly like Transylvania Hunger you find more that "sound like" Darkthrone rather than one specific album.
A great summary! It's music and everyone got their own taste, but I agree on alot of your comments. Transilvanian hunger will always be the greatest of norwegian black metal. Hearing it for the first time, when it came out in 1994, was almost an out of the body experience. I was on a short leave from the military and played it on a a shitty mono speaker in the middel of the night, an eerie experience. I rembember it as it was yesterday. It was during the highs of the norwegian scene, a very special time ... Followed them since ABITNS and it only got better and better, till Total death came out ... But FOAD i don't agree on, I think it it's great! 🙂
Thanks for your comments - really cool how you attribute it to such a place and time. To be fair, a shitty mono speaker is probably a good way to listen to transilvanian hunger!
Hey bud…love the work you do here man. Could you do a ranking for “Porcupine Tree” and “Avenged Sevenfold”. Not sure if you listen to them, but if you do, would love to hear your input.
Fun to see how despite being a Darkthrone fan myself I have tastes quite opposite to yours ! Goatlord is one of my personal favorite, so messy, grotesque and evil, it's so all over the place because of the OSDM structure and yet so raw, I love it... as well as The Underground Resistance and Old Star. Well Ravishing Grimness, Sardonic Wrath, the Unholy Trilogy, and Astral Fortress are up there as well, so I got no fucking clue as to how I would rank them and that's quite a lot of albums already...
Great ranking mate. And on your take on Transilvanian Hunger, have you listened to Leviathan before? The debut album "The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide" by the project to me is the one and only release that comes close at all to the perfection Transilvanian Hunger encapsulates. I highly recommend you check it out. Cheers!
Hello! Many thanks for the kind words. I have indeed heard that one - it’s the only Leviathan record I’ve heard actually - and I agree with you completely!
666 by Katharsis and To Embrace the Corpses Bleeding by Judas Iscariot are good records that have a similar vibe to Transylvanian Hunger. Not the same sound, obviously but, they are classics.
Total Death is such an underrated record IMHO. Different if you're looking for the previous stuff's vibes but man some riffs on this album are pure brutality. Anyway, just my 2 cents
@@ESEJESEJ The vocals were too distracting for me. Maybe I'll give the instrumental version a whirl. No rush though. There's a ton of Darkthrone to wallow in.
Its crazy to realize that i hate almost 80% of Darkthrones discography. The only ones i care for are A Blaze..., Under A..., Transilvanian... and Panzerfaust.
I love the vocals on Panzerfaust the whole album
Love Darkthrone. I'm a big fan of their Punkier stuff personally but then I've always been into Crust and the like.

The one other song I'll defend on the underground resistance is Valkyrie, just has a fun energy imo
Goatlord rulz! Love the demo quality.

Panzerfaust is one of my favorites when it comes to the vocals. It's so insane and chaotic!

Mostly agree, exept Total Death bangs.

You lost me early on when you put Total Death so low!!
Goatlord is daft. That aside, all Darkthrone albums have something tasty about them.
Goatlord has the best and most interesting drums of all their albums. Fucking love it.

You’re both right! Deffo check that new instrumental release Nigel
