      @@MKRM27 I own a farm too and could make great use of it but not for farming. But my intention was not upset anyone I just feel that for farming it is too refined and wouldn't stand up to the rough treatment our Defender gets and the amount of items that are carried in the rear of the Defender this new version would not have the space with all the seats in either version. Yes taking children as passengers & going to horse shows with it would be lovely but a Defender should be designed as a work vehicle whereas this new new one was being referred to as a car which it is more suited too.

  • @sensescaper

    Part of the problem with this car is the way it is being presented. Car design now has to 'pass' ECAP/NCAP crash protection tests with pedestrian strike which rules out putting a big protruding steel bumper on it like the old one. That's the primary reason for a plastic front - not a fashion statement - as all the 'reviewers' seem to be obsessed with. I think they have missed a trick by not making even a plastic front able to take the range of accessories for WORK (winches, ploughs, cranes, lifters etc that the old one had). Vinyl wrap instead of paint for the body is a great idea if being hammered on an expedition and then re-sold afterwards. The cabin is thought through well though two wet, dirty dogs shaking themselves dry in it regularly would soon tat it up. Loss of the ladder frame chassis is a pity for a 'work horse', but I guess they have done it as a compromise to road manners - which (as someone who has owned two Series and a Defender) DID need sorting. Repairability is key - as it keep resisting changing and tweaking the design so parts and panels are in plentiful supply - which will be interesting to see if JLR do that. It's growing on me - and I do wish the purists (which I could easily qualify as) would tone down their vitriol a bit. It's 2020 (nearly). Some people would still want a Model T Ford if they had their way...

In 50 years please look back and tell me if this is iconic. It is going to be easily outdated because of its lack of iconic carry forward (sorry a safari window is just not enough...) 😜

      Tim Hill True, but the problem is the market for the replaced defender was dwindling year on year. So few people actually needed such a utilitarian vehicle sales were a fraction of other manufacturers. Farmers long ago moved over to Mitsubishi pick ups. The military don't need them. Sales were being propped up by enthusiasts, and you can't run a car business based on that.

    • @Cooliemasteroz
      @Cooliemasteroz 5 лет назад

      Spencer Wilton I didn’t know that was the case. Land Rover could have saved a lot of criticism if they had let that be known when they stopped making the last defender. Maybe it wasn’t a secret and I just hadn’t been reading about defenders enough to know what was going on. I thought that they stopped making the original concept because of fuel efficiency and pedestrian safety standards were raised in Europe.

    I have never wanted a land rover due to the fact that the range rovers and discoveries are basically mall cars and I like my cars to do offroading. I never considered a defender before because of its comfort and interiors. But this changes everything. If it is as capable as they say it is, than this is the car for me.

    I think the name Defender was wronged in this car !!!
    I suggest that you classify it as a new sports car or add a sport to Defender.

      I don't agree, It looks great, maybe a few to many poly panels on the exterior. but overall the have nailed it.. As a Defender, THE Landrover, the concept is flawed. it isn't, but I Like it for what it is very much.

      Not sure the original ones did either...well not without breaking down at every opportunity anyways. The last years built are the worse with broken transfer cases and drive train/ gearbox issues.

    I’ve waited for this for a long time and now its finally here I really dont know what to say about the new design. Yes the 90 which I was looking forward to see looks like a concept car. I’m trying hard to convince my self of considering it so I will watch all the videos of all motoring channels re the 90.

      @captain pugwash How is it that the owners of " majority views" dont even own the vehicle, yet keep spilling their stereotype....that in itself answers your question.
      JLR have come a long way from what used to be the case "once upon a time" much like every manufacturer who faced similar issues.
      As far as bejng right or wrong ..Sir you are NOBODY to say what i right or wrong because there is NOTHING " right" or "wrong" in what i said ?? Much the same as what you do , so please dont even try imposing anything .

  • @TheSpoovy
    @TheSpoovy 5 лет назад

    JLR isn't trying to win over existing Defender owners or to compete with the Jimny, cos that's incredibly risky and it's not where the money's at. And we should be glad they didn't try to compete with the ludicrous G-Class and set the starting price at £100k.

    ...bucking the theme of the comments, I like this truck. It is the 21st century after all so we ought to expect some development. Maybe some storage in the back of the jump seat would’ve been a smart idea. If I could afford one, I would, white wheels included.

    This is a truly example of how Land Rover have pulled away from the original Defender. The original defender would go almost any where, pull almost anything including itself out off mud baths an awash mud tracks, and after a quick hose down could be used to attend the local dance or theatre. If it broke most people, even non mechanically orientated drivers could nearly always manage a get you home with some form of a Heathe Robinsoin repair even when miles out in the Australian outback or African wild lands.
    I'm told the new out of the common man's financial range Defender, that it is a computer on wheels................ 85 seperate electrical units to run this mobile W.O.P.A. on Wheels. My last Freelander 2, had just one such unit fail and there I was stuck at the side of the M25 awaiting the RAC. When they arrived I had to be towed off the motorway as they were out of the particular relay for an instant repair.
    Give me a Defender with a Manual gearbox, a V8 engine and you have a true 4 x 4 off and on roader
    Why didn't They just make the original defender 6/8" wider, it would have been so easy and a lot cheaper, same engines/gearboxes, most of the same electric/fuel tanks/ interier/wheels/ tyres/ doors, the list goes on and on. the extra width would bring about better road holder better cornering, better carrying capacity and the room to fit all those lovely side air, knee air bags and last but not least side impact bars. So many of the original engine ,chassis and body parts could come of the shelf and make repairs so much cheaper and cut down production cost of new different panels..
    Many initial present buyers of the old defender, Farmers/Army/Navy/air force/police forces would still bye them as a back up and step forward for there existing stocks and would have saved millions on training and body and engine clutch/transmission repairs.
    I rest my case.
    Mick BERRY
