    Would have liked to see them go down the G Wagon / Jimny design route, keeping it boxy like the original. This looks more like a modern Freelander.

      The same with Wrangler ... I think Rivian has a better design and package than this.
      Defender is an icon. This is just bland. Not sure it works ...

      Modern G Wagon also don't have a little more ability than this. Jimny is still off roader, who better drives thru forest than McD drive thru.

      IKR grand tour is ok but not as good as top gear the new top gear is not very good I got told I tried to watch it with Matt le blanc but I just cringed nothing against Matt I love him but they were trying to hard to be the iconic trio lol

      ...and thats the point, reason that the old vehicles ruled the earth. It would be interesting to do a 10km tour with old and new see what issues arise.

      Depends on what will be included in the cheapest version possible. If it will have no infotainment, no active air suspension and so on, than maybe, just maybe it won't break every 100km.

      @Dan R farmers stopped buying defenders ages ago. They all use hilux, rangers and l200s now.
      The only people who have bought defenders in the last 10 years have been enthusiasts and posers mate

      Side window profile looks a bit like the old mini estate with the weird semi suicide doors. Front grill is a bit shite. Apart from that it looks ace, love the square rear pillar panel. Interior is well executed, successfully managed to mix minimalist utilitarianism and luxury feel

      @@frankmagana1408 But the Mercedes-Benz G-class has not betrayed its roots, retaining the body-on-frame construction. It may have switched to independent front suspension (while retaining the straight rear axle suspension), but it still remains true to what a G-class is.
      This Land Rover "Defender", has not.

      Why remake the 1970s version , it was basically the same vehicle through 7 decades. As for the G-class , it is the most pointless overpriced , high maintenance vehicle on the road , driven by absolute tools with more money than sense & the styling already looks dated like a pastiche refresh of the 40 year old original.

      @@onthemarketblog6444 the same place as the other £20bn for warships, submarines, f35s on updating the british military backbone, the MoD has always worked with landrover and have talks in design, then they are passed onto BAE System's for armour plating etc, the MoD probably has paid for the new defender from concept to release

      Where is the manual transmission option? Hopefully you will be able to buy one with very limited electronics because, let’s face it.... Land Rover has a bad history on the electronics front. Last thing I want is the stereo shorting out something important.

    It looks like an updated Freelander. Land Rover have made a massive mistake cancelling the old Defender, just look at how popular the updated G Wagon is.

      They canceled the original defender because sales were going down, and it was time for a new beginning. It would be almost impossible to make an updated version of original defender because they would have to jack the price so much. Getting a square body like the G Wagon to become aerodynamic was not cheap and that's why the G Wagon is so damn expensive. After all, the original Defender was supposed to be a cheaper, rugged offroad vehicle that almost anyone could get their hands on.

      DaBoise they also cancelled it, because it sharp edges werent legal in the Eu anymore due to being a danger for pedestrians. So they had to close sales for the old one there and design a modern one.

      I agree with you 100%. The designers at Land Rover seems to be confused. The Discovery has a tradition that hasn't been interfered with since inception, I don't know what they were thinking when they gave us the Discovery 5, I'm sure they regretted that action. This is the real deal. Although i think it would have been a little bigger.

I wont even say that this vehicle, taken separate from its forebaerer, is not a nice looking, capable offroader. I do, however, think this vehicle is a sad departure from its rich history, and I do think it waters down the brand. If you disagree, that is fine, but there is nothing selfish about me disliking a car.

      @@aris14q11 yea, and have very little load capacity, poor road performance and the complexity of automatic brakes for collision avoidance ( the only way it could get any encap stars).
      It's a real shame that all manufacturers now have to have all this shit on their cars that essentially reduce the service life to 10ish years whatever badge is on the bonnet.

    Defender is now a hairdressers daily driver.
    Land cruiser 70 series is the only 4wd thats true to its heritage.

      David Willis The lack of the new Jimny in the United States is one of the most disappointing 'we don't get it here's in recent memory. It's perfect, or at least seems it as best I can tell. This thing? Not really, so much. It's kinda cool, I suppose, but in my mind it's not a Defender.

      An ECU can be as little as a circuit board controlling the headlights... The D4 had around 40.

      @@xe5375 Stock capability of going from -50mm to +140mm in the suspension is insane.
      None of the Dakar T1 offroaders have a frame and dependent suspension.
      This is clearly an off-roader, and what you wanted to say is that it's not a technical suspension museum like a Nissan Patrol, or the old Land Rovers.

      Seriously, lookup some actual off-road events with any kind of mud. All of the classic heavy off-road cars get stuck all the time unless they are heavily modded with huge lifts and like 35" wheels. And even then the stiff axle is an issue as it limits the effective clearance.
      In other words. Do you think that a Hummer H1 is an SUV?
      Because it doesn't have a stiff axle suspension, and the frame is there only to provide modular capability

    The question is "it's reliable". Landover is famous for breaking down. Range Rover and land Rover never fixed reliability issues. Hope this time they put it into consideration.

      Ironically the Duster 4x4 has sort of taken over where the old Defender and Lada Niva left off, simple, practical, cheap, competent, doesn't matter if it gets scuffed etc. This, while not a million pounds, would still look better outside Blenheim Palace than up to the door handles in mud, wouldn't want to scratch it!

      When you think how many Defenders used to be sold to the military and utility companies etc. I'm surprised how Land Rover chose to ignore that market in recent years. The residual values for existing Defenders shows that not everyone is looking for a penthouse on wheels.

      Jeep has managed to keep the Jeep heritage alive, Land Rover could have learned from them. In the USA old style Land Rovers sell for close to what these are new, suggesting a huge market for a proper defender that would pass the Federal requirements for safety and emissions. The last thing the US needs or anywhere else is another luxury 4x4.

      Andrew Pryce Defenders weren’t really designed for hogging up and down the M25 at 80 mph... They were designed to be in Scotland, tearing through the mountains at 5 mph. Also, as long as it is maintained properly, they don’t need much fixing.

      As good as the Defender was in 1975 it was pretty shit towards the end. The idea that farmers were crying when they ceased production is bullshit - they were all buying Japanese pickups long before that.

      @@kev8943 not available in most of the world unfortunately. And also not that great. It's a stiff work truck with very little flex and expensive optional air conditioning and vinyl floors. And its loud inside and costs G wagon $
