I worked for Taco Bell in 1976, everything was made fresh, from scratch. The food was actually really good-fresh and tasty. Employees actually came up with the Burrito Supreme, and big sellers were the Enchrito and the Bell-Beefer. Also bring back black olives and green chives.

Exactly. We use to deliver 100lb sacks of pinto beans to Taco Bell back in the day!
jeff samora I remember having to dump those sacks of pinto beans on a rack, washing the beans, and removing all the small rocks you’d find within the beans before placing the beans in giant steel pressure cookers.
Exactly. We had a produce delivery business, everyday at LA market load up and deliver throughout Ventura county.
The original burrito supreme rocked!

Hmm... that actually got me thinking about if dogs could vote for another dog to be president, which pooch would be perfect for the job? 🤔😂

I remember when they had mini churros, not the cheap cinnamon twist we have now, frutista freezes, choco tacos, meximelts, smothered burritos, encheritos, cheesy potato burrito, happy hour grillers, they took out the chicken chipotle grilled and stopped putting bacon in cheesy potato grilled and sell it for more, and they took out manzanita sol, sangria blast and half and half tea. I saw all that crumpling down working there and its now just a shell of what it used to be and I can only assume it was much better even back then
I worked there in the 80's as well. I worked all the stations and different jobs there during my "tenure". Produce was brought in fresh every morning and was washed and then cut up on manually operated machines. Beef was fresh too and cooked in these big square pans with the special seasoning mixed with water throughout the day as needed. Cheese came in huge blocks which were then cut by hand with a wire and manually shredded. The refried beans were manually sorted out of 50 pound pounds to make sure there were no rocks in them and made in 2 huge pressure cookers with 2 big blocks of lard, an s-load of salt and hot water. Refried beans from taco bell back then were so creamy and delicious, unlike now. When done, we broke out a black and decker drill with a 3 foot long extension that had a chopping blade on the end and smoothed out the beans. Taco shells were all fried fresh every day and kept in a large warming cabinet. Nowadays, the meat comes precooked, the beans in cans, the produce already cut up, the cheese already shredded and the taco shells are already cooked. I can definitely tell that the taste and freshness nowadays is not even close to what it used to be. The only thing that has gone up is the price, not the quality. It is so sad to me. Here in Nor Cal, there's a small mom and pop chain that is very much like taco bell used to be, with everything fresh and it brings back memories of how freaking tasty Taco Bell used to be. The fall of a great one.
I used to like Taco Bell's beef burrito. If you ordered one, you'd get one bursting with beef. Nowadays, if you order one, you get five layers of flour tortilla with barely enough filling to keep from choking on it. So I ordered one with extra beef. Big mistake. Now I see why they don't put so much on it. When I ordered extra, it had a weird texture like it was thickened with baby powder. I hate Taco Bell!
Dang tim pole,
You seem to be negative about any progress anywhere.
Just like All companies that compete, they choose to use a co-packer or main location to process their ingredients just like the sauce packets.
I find them far better that many other fast food chains and eat there often.

I was general manager at a Taco Bell in Louisiana from 1997 to 2001. Sunday's were always are slow days so I personally changed the price of our hard shell and soft shell tacos to half off 39 cents (43 cents after tax). People would show up and order them by the 100's. Increased our profits by the thousands. After I left the store a new owner purchased the store and did away with my idea and from what I heard the sales plummeted.
thats actually genius man. Good job!
I first visited a Taco Bell in the 70s. Worked at one in the 80s. My favorite for decades has been the combo (meat and beans) burrito with green sauce. They discontinued the combo but you could still get one by adding 'extra' meat to a bean burrito along with the green sauce. Then on my last visit they said the green sauce is gone for good. Congrats, Taco Bell, you managed to sever a faithful 45 year relationship.

When I was young, I loved the Enchirito
the fact that at a corporate level... The decision to kill the Enchirito... Makes me have No desire to participate in any Taco Bell products, nor do I encourage anyone to purchase products from Taco Bell, the Enchirito was on the hidden menu, and long time customers would order it. It's a unique product that nobody else sells. My family and those around me know not to bring up the option to purchase anything from Taco Bell. Many restaurants have secret menu items for their faithful customers. All the ingredients to make the Enchirito is still there yet.. Someone at the corporate level decided to remove it. This person or the people do not understand nor do they honor.. Some of the statements on their website about honoring long-time customers. It would have been no big deal to keep the Enchirito on the menu is a secret item for the long-time customers.
For me and others. The end of the Bellbeefer! Was the end of TB!
Also I liked the old Adobe style building. Just a brick house, simmering pinto beans
Getting rid of the Blck Olives, and Green Onions in the 90's was a HUUUUUUGe loss.
As well as the Taco Light (not the Lite as less fat) but the amazing large crispy white shell beauty!
Beans not being made without lard, BIG LOSS!

You totally missed talking about the big change in ingredients from their earliest restaurants to when they got bought out by the PepsiCo organization. Their original ingredients were several orders of magnitude better than after the PepsiCo takeover, including the fact that all their basic ingredients (except flour tortillas, green and red sauces) were cooked or shredded or chopped fresh daily on premises, including the corn taco shells. I personally think their biggest loss was when they changed the green sauce recipe, in my opinion to this very day was the best green sauce - bar none - that I’ve ever tasted. When they switched was when I stopped eating there. But I guess for the younger generation, if you don’t know how good it used to be, then you don’t miss it, and will be much more willing to accept mediocrity.
I worked there during my teens. Was there before and after PepsiCo bought it. Huge difference overnight. Quality went down immediately prices went up gradually... still don't eat there. Except if I have munchies and if someone else is willing to get it lol...
Larry Manasco you're high if you believe that. They've been using pre-cut lettuce and pre-made shells, heating everything thing in the microwave since at least 1980.
boardskins the first tacobell that went up where I lived was a franchise that was owned by a family of a friend of mine. I got to go inside and see in detail what went on. The taco shells and tostada shells were deep fried on the premises, the beans and beef were made from scratch, the cheese was grated in house, the onions, lettuce, and tomatoes also were chopped likewise in house, the only things that came from the outside were the flour tortillas, the green and red sauce, the taco sauce (only one type at that time served in plastic cups with lids - that too packed on premisses, and the soft drinks. Didn’t have to believe it - I saw it first hand for myself!
My taco Bell needs shut down , cleaned & re staffed!!

Taco Bell reformulated their beans in the 80s to be "healthy" and as a result they had to completely retool the menu to cover up the fact the beans were suddenly horrid. It used to be the beans had just 4 ingredients: beans, salt, water, & lard. And they were awesome. People would just order a cup of beans with a little sauce and a sprinkle of onion and cheese - it was a menu favorite. A couple months after the recipe change the item was discontinued because nobody ordered them any longer.
I quit going to Taco Bell when they quit the Bell Beefer

When I was 16 I worked at Taco Bell. that was in 1986. Back then we COOKED the meat in a tilt skillet and seasoned it. I cut tomatoes shredded cheese. Only the lettuce came in pre cut. Chips and taco shells were also fried on location. Now everything comes in already done. Throw the bag of meat into the steam table, tear open bags of cheese lettuce and beans yup open the bag add in a pan of hot water. The only think they actually make is the Chulpa shell and the pizza shells and the cinnamon twists.
The people that work at my local Taco Bell literally know me it’s so embarrassing but Taco Bell is soooo bombbb

I remember getting the bean and cheese burritos for 25 cents and tacos for 30 cents
I have good memories regarding the Taco Bell just outside of Riverside, California. Grandma and I would always stop by this one on our way to the main mall where we would order Enchiritos. We ate them outside on account of the pigeons and they were bold, little rascals, too. Once, some meat fell out of my taco and I had about 4 or 5 pigeons fighting for it right over my foot. The flapping of wings felt kinda weird against my bare leg. I don't know which was more fun: eating the food ourselves or feeding it to the pigeons.🌮🌮🌮🌮🌮
