Funny that educating the uneducated about what they eat is in fact, a waste of time.
For someone who’s worked in the food industry for a long time, rules are super strict and let me tell you, just because one place’s hygiene is poor doesn’t mean all the others are the same. They’ll always be serious repercussions for anyone neglecting food safety. So anyone responsible not keeping equipment clean will most likely get in serious trouble in addition to the restaurant.

Up until a week ago, I was a Kitchen Department Manager at a McDonald’s for quite a few years. That being said, many things in this video are wrong but especially the comment about the French fry oil having beef flavor and citric acid added to the oil for flavor; that’s just not true. There are separate fryer vats for each product (for example, a few for fries only, one for fish only, and a few for all the chicken products only) and these do not get mixed. Meaning we don’t cook fries in the vat for chicken products, and we don’t cook chicken in the vat for fish. However, all of the fryer vats are filled with pure Vegetable Oil. No beef flavoring or citric acid added. So for vegetarians and people unable to each beef, no need to worry!And the frys are salted with pure table salt; none of the other ingredients that were mentioned.

I worked at McDonald's and tried to keep it as clean as I could. Ours were not nearly as bad. Also the fries, hash browns, etc. Were fried in vegetable oil with no trace of beef. I'm still a vegetarian (yes I worked at McDs while being a vegetarian) and know that the fries there are meat-free.

I work at McDonalds and I wanted to say that a huge part of these news stories are covering stores that don’t follow protocol and ignoring the fact that a majority of stores do follow protocol, mine included.
We have a rigorous cleaning schedule for our floors and counters. Once a month (or twice depending on circumstances) we do a deep clean of all our machines, including the ice cream machine and McCafé machines. We even have days where we don’t sell ice cream products because we spend majority of the work day cleaning it. Parts of the McCafé machines clean themselves, such as the blenders and even inside the machines. But we still clean inside them as often as we can.
One of the many chores we do before closing the store is we take any removable parts of machines out and we scrub them and then put them back. So trays that catch falling ice cream and McFlurry droppings, holders that hold your cups in place while ice cream or orange juice is being poured, small tube mechs that pour out the OJ, grated trays that are in the McCafé machines, all of the teapots, all of the spoons we use for mixing drinks, parts of the coffee machine, literally ANYTHING we can remove, we clean.
Floors are washed with buckets of soapy water and a scrub brush, then we squeegee the excess water into drains that are underneath the machines.
Counters and machine fronts are polished and wiped down, fry stations are removed and scrubbed down, and we regularly wipe counters as the work day proceeds.
So idk. I think McDonald’s gets a bad rap, but it’s probably bc it’s the largest fast food chain

All the raving about salt and all I can think is “don’t hate on salt for being the master preserver and anti spoilage king”... just remember: without salt, YOU wouldn’t be able to function at all. I do agree that in processed foods, there’s usually more than what’s needed for basic preservation which is why so many are opting to just cook at home. But still, salt is important!

I also remove all the brightwork on the grill and mechanically scrape off the carbon and clean the air filters above the grills. I pull the freezers, surfaces and grills from the walls and mop the grease under them. I'm not sure if every McDonald's has a guy who does as much cleaning as I do but I'd say in general, McDonald's is a safe place to eat as any restaurant.
