"No one should ever stop someone from calling for help"? They didn't stop you, they asked you to leave and you had the freedom to make that call. This is sickening really. My condolences to the Piazza family.

I think it was more than alcohol, most likely drugs. My daughter goes to University and got offered it as a freshman. Let’s not play dumb and think that drugs aren’t involved. My ex was a “frat boy” at WVU and told me about the copious amounts of alcohol and piles of drugs. As if it’s just a “don’t get caught” only thing. It’s gross!

fraternities take phones from brothers and pledges at the door so that no one can video or take pictures of what goes on at the parties. He would've needed to ask for his phone back from whomever was holding them and considering what all the other brothers were saying I doubt they would've given him his phone.

I do not know what I would have done at that age. I know at 57 I would have found a way to get help but this young man is not 57. When we were this age would we have not listened to the other guys and gone to get help? I like to think so but how do we know what we would have done in this situation. It is sad that these college campuses are to this point and young people ignorant enough to sit back and allow someone to die in front of them but here we are.

He was so worried and shook that he decided to leave the kid unconscious and unresponsive without any notification of police or medical services? How is that considered ok and why hasn’t he been charged as well? Isn’t there a “Good Samaritan law” that says if you can but choose to do nothing you can be held liable as well? He literally could have made an “anonymous” call if he was worried about retribution. Am I wrong here?

The trash and crap all over campus they leave behind tells the story of how these children aren't rdy to be on there own. Colleges need to put more strict rules on how things are run. But that doesn’t mean that they are prepared to always withstand peer pressure and the want of fitting in. We’re not just talking about alcohol here either but drugs. Of course no one is going to want to call but that needs to change!
The state I live in no longer allows sorority houses because they are considered brothels but fraternities, no problem.

Let's be real, everyone knows that this goes on, everyone just turns a blind eye because not enough people die from these incidences or the people in high places are being affected. I believe that a part of the reason why this story is getting so much attention is because this incident took place at "Penn State" a "prestigious university" and not Timbuktu University and that is also the sad part.

Ugh this makes me sick. Seems like part of the problem is that these kids know the hazing rituals are dangerous and wrong, so when someone is seriously injured they don't immediately call for help. But like, do they think people just miraculously recover from serious injuries without medical intervention? They clearly don't seem to care about the pledges, but even from a selfish standpoint, why wouldn't you get them help as soon as possible? Just seems like some of these organizations are full of people that think they're entitled to everything and can get away with anything.

He could have also been afraid that he would be killed during the cover up. People do some crazy things, unthinkable things when their backs are against the wall. I have been to college recently, in frat houses and around fraternity members. It is actually pretty common practice not to help those who have drank too much. I have seen people drink so much that they blacked-out mid-chug and hit the floor. Nobody around would help, but instead laugh and make fun of the person who "couldn't hold their alcohol." Often times these people were just left alone until they sobered up. Even if that meant the drunk person who was passed out was laying in the middle of the room. It was common practice (where I was) to just leave them, laugh at them, and make jokes about how weak they were. I don't drink but would still attend the parties because of friends and what I witnessed was pretty shocking. One time I was so worried about a random guy's well-being after passing out that I begged strangers to help me lift him up to move him to a more comfortable area like a couch instead of the kitchen floor. You would have thought I was asking people to give me their first born child. Here is a view from my perspective --> None of the frat boys from Penn State wanted Timothy Piazza to pass away that night. From my own experience, I would say that none of the frat boys even realized at the time how bad Timothy's condition was. They probably didn't expect that time to be any different from all the other times when students got too intoxicated, blacked out, etc. I would say this is the reason they did not feel the need to involve authorities. They were expecting Timothy to eventually just sober up and deal with his own "boo boos" from the night, as many other students have done before him. Over time the frat boys came to a realization that Timothy was actually seriously injured and out of fear of punishment they made the poor decision to ignore it, and probably with hopes Timothy, like the many before him, would make it through with a crazy hazing story to tell. I feel like the majority of the responsibility should fall on Timothy and not the frat boys. I don't think the futures of those frat boys should be in shambles because Timothy's desire to fit in was so strong that he drank more than he could handle. The frat boys should have called the authorities, but I can understand why they didn't at the same time. The real issue we should be examining is drinking in fraternities & college house parties. None of the frat boys from Penn state involved with Timothy's death are murderers, they are just really, really STUPID college-aged men. That is my take anyways, I could be way off.

      M. S. I get your story and all but when someone falls drunk down a flight of stairs that should have been a BIG, BIG RED FLAG regardless!!!

tbh gauntlets are the way more mild hazing for frats to do. This doesn't give any excuse for what they did, but its much milder than other rituals

Fraternities, in and of themselves, should be outlawed. Way too many kids end up dying because they want to belong to one. Others end up feeling useless or unloved.....unwanted.

Maybe if it was not illegal for them to be drinking then someone would have reported it sooner and this young man would be alive

When are our young folk going to learn? I hope they all get the maximum sentence and the young man that didn’t call for help is a coward! I would have called for help regardless the consequences. What about all the other bystanders? I’m so angry….prayers for this family, I can’t imagine the pain of having a son accomplish getting to college and then losing home to such nonsense. This is sick behavior and should be illegal on all levels and to think these are the men that will one day grow up and go out into the world.

So let me get this straight, the kid not charged said he was the only one who helped. NOT TRUE! He said the others made him leave, yeah so what stopped him from calling 911??? No one was holding a gun to his head. Sickening

Katie H....I feel your anger...I wouldn't say intent...I would say careless after the fact...Remember some of them tried to wake him up...my problem with their actions is the long wait...before calling...question though? How many hours did they say he was unconscious???

Grown ass man wasn’t smart enough to know when to stop drinking. Who’s fault is that? What you expect from a frat? A sensitive emotional conversation? Maybe they can get some money now by suing the alcohol manufacturer ? How many times did you call for help after getting wasted with your drinking buddies or even when you’re sober ?

These fraternities are the future upper class of the US, it is very disturbing that their group psychology and rituals are so destructive and hostile.
