the obvious reason for frat enrollment numbers going up from 2007-2017 is that the amount of students enrolled at the school also increased from 2007-2017 at a comparable rate. Frat numbers most likely increased cuz enrollment numbers went up therefore it is obviously more people but it is expected because the total amount of kids go up. the percentages stay the same.

They said one of the frat rituals was drinking out of a pot that contained semen. I would have walked out the door right then. Just trifling. No self respecting man, especially a straight one would even consider that.
It's not even about being straight or gay. You don't need to bring sexuality into this. No human being, whether straight or gay, should have to drink the bodily fluids from other people for a fraternity ritual. That's disgusting and unsanitary.
Kudos to this video, it seems pretty fair, reporting as much info as possible (and talking to that president) without jumping to conclusions or making false claims. I was in a fraternity at a smaller school, my chapter was 50 guys, and had a great time. Made some of my lifelong best friends. What I say to people that are on the outside looking in is that every chapter is a fraternity unto itself. I've known chapters, including my own, that would never do any of the crap you hear about in the news and were standup guys. And I've known chapters that are exactly the Brads and Chads you despise, I don't like them either. The "hazing" I went through was mostly manual labor, cleaning the house, and what amounted to team building exercises. The brothers messed with us but it was in a good natured way, not vindictive or dangerous. I think it helped us grow together as a group. We threw great crazy parties, we could get drunk as hell if we wanted but no one forced us to. And we always took care of girls. All I can say is that these things need to be handled on a case by case basis and that they should be held to the same standards as anyone else.
UCI alumni here. As an international student, I joined Greek Life to have fun and get a unique perspective towards American culture. And I did have a lot of fun, but I am never going to join these kinds of “forced fun” cultish organizations again. We had to show how cool we are and put in a lot of unpaid labor (we were actually paying for it)- it was overwhelming. Also, a good friend of mine in the fraternity overdosed on Xanax and lost his life.
Anybody who needs a frat or sorority needs a spine first. Pay for friends? These friends who NEVER have your back, wont call 911 to help you, or show up at your hospital bed to threaten you to keep silent? F that.
tellurye and you’re also talking behind a keyboard too so don’t say shit, I bet you wouldn’t go up to a fraternity member and say shit. You coming on here to bash Greek life shows you are a loser.
@@thomashatcher3056 most people join frats because that's what they think the ideal college experience is because of movies. But you can do all the things you do in fraternities for free. You can make friends, you can rent an apartment together, or duplex or house, you can throw parties. You can network by going to school events/fairs. People join frats/sororities because they think they need to join it to feel cool or to have the full college experience.
@@glleboy2233 probably in college nowadays that may be true. But the fraternity protects the chapter, not its members. Like when a hazing incident goes wrong, the brothers will pressure you into keeping your mouth shut, they will say you acted alone, that you have a drinking problem, etc. Doesnt sound like much loyalty to me there.
The most ironic thing I see is I've seen athletic teams, athletic clubs and other student groups haze people far worse than fraternities. But when one of those people gets sick, they team/club/whatever doesn't have to worry about the school shutting them down so they actually call and get them to a hospital. It's chalked up to as some random college student getting too drunk or whatever. But if they were in a fraternity or sorority, it's now a crime that needs to be met with the most severe punishment.
All I can say about greek life is you'll never understand it if your not in it and we'll never understand the point of view of those who oppose it. No point in arguing it, there's valid arguments on each side. Just try and understand people are different and people like different things so stop bashing them for it. That goes for both sides.
The whole "meeting people and making strong bonds" excuse for joining the Greek scene is BS. It's for the parties, the validation from peers, and the fear of having a less fulfilling social life because secretly you are afraid that you will not be accepted or loved without this construct. Frats also promote misguided and toxic expressions of masculinity (alcohol abuse, sexual conquest, physical violence, etc.), which appeals to immature boys who are trying desperately to find their place as they try to grow into men. Why these institutions still exist is beyond me. You can have student organizations without any of the garbage associated with Greek life.
you're generalizing. Greek life has the potential to be something great or be the shittiest thing ever. its up to each chapter to makes its own culture. Might wanna do some thinking bud.
Greek life at Penn State is responsible for THON which raises millions of dollars every year for a great cause so it is not all just garbage. Yes partying is big however it is not just people in greek life who like to party. A lot of houses make it very clear that to be a member you need to be a good person and very respectful. There are shitty houses filled with shitty people that seems to be the only thing people pay attention to because they are the only ones you here about. All that is talked about are the few houses that all they care about is hazing their pledges and partying when in reality that may be 6 of the almost 50 fraternities at Penn State. If you have never been in one you honestly have zero idea what it is about and should act as such instead of making completely bs generalizations.
My sorority leadership was the most valuable thing I got, it’s insane how much responsibility it takes as a student. I’m not besties with any of the girls. All good friends tho! I’m so happy our initiation is chill, frats are so much more intense and it definitely takes a certain kinda guy to go along with it, even at my college 😂 it’s better today than in the 80s and 90s.
Funny enough, it has gotten a lot better 😂 in terms of hazing at least. Thankfully, I was never hazed (I’m a Fiji, so it’s surprising considering what other chapters do haha) and my brothers and I are all very close. The time commitment part is also very accurate. To outsiders (not blaming them), it seems like all that Greek life does is drink, party, haze, and attack people. However, only people on the inside will know what a fraternity or sorority does and how much work it takes to run them
I was in a Fraternity at a very large school. It is unexplainable, why it was a great experience. The bonds were and still are stronger than any other friendships I’ve ever experienced. I rushed just over 20 years ago and my brothers were at my wedding, godfathers to my kids and still close friends. We have grown up together and still keep in touch. Out of all my friends that weren’t in fraternities, they don’t have the same closeness with their friends. I would compare it to athletes that played college sports. These people were having the same experiences as you and it gives you community. It’s really what everyone strives for is being apart of something bigger. The traditions brought you closer. After 20 years, I know 30 guys I could call for advise, connections or a friend to keep a secret. These are not things that can just be purchased.
I played hockey in juniors and college and it’s true, but that isn’t frats or sports per se it’s having a shared identity adversity and time together. I think hazing to a certain extent is a good thing and Initiation processes are a part of life, military, jobs, school that build closeness, they just need to make it safe and fun. I have been on hockey teams where you can opt out of hazing and just do an extra workout but it’s still close. When you ban anytbing that people want to do it creates a more dangerous environment.
Maybe if men could make friends like normal we wouldn’t need literal boys’ clubs. Frats are dens of alcoholism and violence and they largely operate with impunity because they bring in donations for the school. Im glad you had a good experience but at the point where dudes have died and there’s still little to no oversight, I don’t think frats are worth it.
"These are not things that can just be purchased." Yet you literally purchased them, you dunce. You can keep those fake friends of yours all to yourself. The money you hand them went towards alcohol and parties - the only things frats seem to live for. Imagine wasting your life away holding a cheap, plastic red party cup with only tomorrow's hangover to look forward to. There's more to friends than being degenerates together.
@@mason9146 Very well put, and "not worth it" is definitely an understatement. You haven't even mentioned the sexual harassment that goes on in those sketchy areas. Pinocchio's pleasure island comes to mind. It's just bottom feeders all the way down.
I go to a school where greek life is big and i can tell you first hand greek life is absolutely disgusting. 90% of the people involved treat people not in greek life like second class citizens, they routinely torment people for initiation rituals, and exclude people who aren't rich and white. To top things off, I personally know 8 girls who have been sexually assaulted at fraternity houses. The fact that schools still allow greek life to exist is appalling. It should be permanently banned from every school.
It is 100% not like that at my university and has been incredibly beneficial to me. We don’t discriminate on race or money or anything for that matter. My life would be completely different without it. You don’t get to take away all of something just because there are some bad people out there. Your school is clearly different and if you have complaints about it then take it to the administrators and try to make a change for the better instead of taking away something that is supposed to be a good thing because some people abuse it.
Frats are fun thats why I and many others joined one. Hazing is a serious issue but I think we need to respect a fine line. I remember my school would always go overboard with hazing prevention and it honestly had the opposite effect on the frat guys mentality.
Frats are a total waste of time period. They do whatever they want with no punishments handed down. If I was in charge of that particular frat where that kid died it would be shut down permanently! The people involved in the kid death put in prison for man slaughter.
I go to a state school and am a pledge at a frat. Everyone knows in my frat of 100 guys that if a girl says there was unwanted touching that guy would be pulled to the side and the shit will be beaten out of him.
I went to state patties day when I was 16. Friend brought be up. No one bought that I was of legal age, but no one gave a shit. Was a fun time seeing everything go on down there. That was when wiz khalifa was performing at frats instead of venues. I only know that because he played at the party we went to that night.

@@TheHexbugfan .. Hey, if your purpose is to meet and hook up with sorority sisters, fine, I understand that. But to join a frat for the purposes of "meeting my future best friends" is cringey and almost borderline gay.
As a man in a fraternity at a smaller school, the differences between us and Penn State is massive. There are also plenty of differences in the way national executive boards handled situations in the past and how they do now. Our chapter at Penn State was completely disbanded due to misconduct and every brother in other chapters agreed due to the transgression of values that we’re meant to uphold. I’m not saying that all things fraternities do are good either, there are obviously problems with the way in which some conduct themselves, but plenty of fraternity/greek life activities can be forces for good. Community outreach programs, philanthropy events, professional connections, these are all things I have personally experienced as a member of greek life at my school. The culture at each school needs to be nurtured individually to create this positive environment, and thats something each IFC and school board need to work on together because fraternities and sororities can have some of the largest positive impacts on their school and surrounding communities if utilized properly.
PSU student here, frats just recently reopened and they’re just as popular as ever. Don’t think shit is going to change as long as everyone is rich enough to wipe away legal problems
I was just like the kids they interviewed when I rushed. I just wanted to fit in and try to make my social life the best it could be. I was too young and dumb to see it for what it was. Most fraternities are expensive, glorified drinking clubs that don't do anything productive. I thought it would be a good organization to develop myself into, but most of the people in my chapter focused on smoking weed, drinking, and partying. The "brotherhood" aspect is fake. You just get a bunch of assigned acquaintances through the rest of your college career. There are some chapters out there that are the exact opposite, but those seem to be more rare. Looking back I was probably better off not joining.
Glorified drinking clubs describe them perfectly. When there are excellent clubs available on campus to meet people who actually have things in common with you - like a college major and academic interests - what good is hanging around a bunch of low-lifes with no meaning to their lives but soulless "partying"? No matter the occasion, it seems the main form of entertainment is just alcohol and more alcohol. Wow, what interesting to people to be around! What a god damn all-around waste of time. And don't even get me started on the sexual harassment, elitism, and all-around garbage personalities they seem to attract.

Can someone please explain to me why the frat boys here had their charges dropped while those involved in that Asian frat that had a similar hazing death got jail time? Racist much, or am I missing something?
theworldhere247 rac·ist noun 1. a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.
J Ayon You didn't answer the question and yes, that is racist if that's the best reply you can give. Just because something doesn't apply to you doesn't make it not racist.
The parents probably pressed hard for the charges to be dropped. All of these boys are cloee friends and all of their parents are also probably close friends. Just how it works when you have money.
You’ll eventually find out that not all of you will get along as you think, ideas will eventually differ, though I believe the process of joining is reasonable, definitely think about the group of guys you are joining.
Tim didn't fall down stairs. He was beat up during "The Gauntlet" -- part of that hazing ritual is when the brothers sit on you and beat you up while forcing you to drink beer/booze.
I have no interest in a fraternity because: 1. They're only short term friends despite they torture the first year 2. I don't drink alcohol 3. Party scene isn't my thing 4. As a black person, practising anything greek is cultural appropriation 5. I go to college for the education (and to do sports)
@Alex Mulvihill 1) Capitalize the first letter of the first word of each sentence. 2) "You're not", not "your not". 3) End each sentence with a period. 4) He literally said the Marine Corps, not the Army (also, Army should be capitalized when referring to a country's military branch. 5) You can go to college and become an officer in the Armed Forces through ROTC. nrotc.psu.edu/prospective-students/program-descriptions/ army.psu.edu/ dumbass
Both the brothers and the university should be held accountable. That's clearly manslaughter. Covering up a death in the name of "brotherhood" is just plain evil.
I was in a quite well known fraternity at a large school for all four years of college and while there was some dumb hazing for pledges, there was nothing like this. Wasn’t really a drinker and was no one made me. There were some stupid hell week activities (not dangerous, just stupid) that I refused to do and I was told okay. There are always idiots everywhere but it is not endemic to organization. Fraternities are a social organization and I am still in contact with many of my fraternities brothers many years later. They are secret but trust me, the secrets aren’t that interesting. It’s a social club that gives you the opportunity to have a peer group in the middle of a large university.
Well no shit they're keeping secrets. Thats part of the whole thing. Your part of something that other people aren't and with that comes a bit of trust. Drinking semens gay though
The frat guys where I went to are so bad local bars wouldn't deal with college kids, unless you where a local you didn't get in, and that was for the frat guys safety.
Only 3,000 out of 47,000 feel the need to join, it's their choice. They know the potential consequences of joining. Most have the sense to be their own person and not join.
On the simplest level fraternities are gangs. You have to prove your loyalty by doing stupid shit that risks your life. If the gang feels you have done enough, you then are allowed to reap the benefits of being in the gang.
join a club on campus, make friends organically. putting yourself in a danger just to feel like you belong to something is not worth it. also, we need to raise our men better.
I got to USC (southern california) and know people in frats and here are some hazing specifics. Alpha Epsilon Pie makes a kid sit in a trash can while everyone throws up on him, and they throw bottles past pledges heads (one hit a kid in the face and he was hospitalized). Phi Sigma Kappa tazes people. Beta Theta Pie makes kids spit beer into each others mouths. ZBT lets cockroaches loose in the dining halls of rival schools. Phi Psi forces kids to binge drink in a sauna. Think joining a frat is a good idea? Think again.
I’m pretty conflicted about frats as a highschool senior. I really can’t stand the frat bro stereotype and I know a lot of people are true to it as well as all the shady stuff like hard drugs, sexual assault, and hazing but I do see benefits in terms of making friends and connections and having fun.
If u dont feel comfortable, dont do it. I did it. Made friends for life. Didnt have to PAY for friends. But make sure u concentrate on class. If pledging affects ur grades, dont do it.
Know why you’re going to school. Take a year off, if need be-although make it planned for what you’re going to work/do/learn in that year and especially what decisions or self understanding you’re seeking in that year. And, have some trusted, respected parent, sibling, mentor, life coach, etc, to touch base with regularity to help keep you accountable.
It's all fun and games (supposedly) until some poor soul actually dies, like Tim Piazza--which does happen all too frequently. Then suddenly it's, "Who--us? We didn't do anything! We don't know anything! That's not what our fraternity is about. We're not about torture or hurting anyone." That's the official line. And then sooner or later it happens again.
They refer to *themselves* as "kids", which seems quite common with college-aged people today. I stopped referring to myself as a "kid" when I got to high school. Are we delaying adulthood these days?
Lies lies and more lies. He did way more than a Zumba class. If he didn’t why wouldn’t he share his frat’s name if he is so proud of not being hazed and “only having to do a Zumba class”. Fishy fishy
If they think Greek life is bad at Penn State, they should see IUP or Ohio University...not that Greek orgs are good at any school. The way brothers in this video respond and the secrecy rules of many fraternities is testament to that.
As soon as you say the word "Frat" to a someone who is a member, it shows your opinion of what you THINK a brotherhood represents. Its sad to say that "Frat partys" are sometimes the only way we are known to the world. When we do good, nobody remembers, when we do bad, nobody forgets.
some people seem to miss the entire point of these things past partying and " buying friends". It's pretty much why most of them will be rich just like their parents probably were who encourage them to join. They will make contacts with a bunch of future successful people, so when they graduate and go into the real world they will have an easier time than the guy who was sitting on their computer complaining about frats.
Frats select you based on your likability which correlates to the vibes you give. It's a system of hierarchy which is important It's kind of based on social class and there will always be social class. It ultimately is about your vibe and you have control of that.....
I was in a fraternity at Penn State, I graduated in 2015 even before piazza... let's just say it was one of the worst decisions of my life that's all I'm going to say about it.
David Boat not really you don't know that. We had to sign contracts saying we would be with the fraternity for all my college career. Plus I lived at the house, where else would I have went when I was living at the house in the middle of the semester? Think before you speak next time don't be so stupid.
I feel like this story runs every year at some university, concerning a death at some chapter.. Hazing is always gonna be a thing and it’s up to people to know their limits. Not saying it should be encouraged, but people need to be responsible for themselves at least to some degree. We had several deaths at my university last year, involving drugs and alcohol, and sometimes combine with cold.. And every year they blame the University, Greek life, or both. In reality, people just need to know their own limits and not drink beyond them or use drugs they don’t know... Why does everyone else have to prevent you from being stupid?
Coming back to this comment section and ughhh the comments are still as sickening as I remembered it to be at some parts "He could say no" "He could stop" "He should be responsible for himself and stand up," Dude.....position yourself as a pledge surrounded by seniors hell bent on making you experiencing some form of pain and abuse masked as ritual. Unless you can get out from that house, you are literally at their mercy and they will not give a damn whether you say no or you state your deadly allergies

screw all the hazing that actually gets people hurt or even worse killed, but some of the hazings stories are hysterical
the obvious reason for frat enrollment numbers going up from 2007-2017 is that the amount of students enrolled at the school also increased from 2007-2017 at a comparable rate.

Not buying it he’s keeping the secret too. They made you do more than a Zumba class bro
Anybody who needs a frat or sorority needs a spine first. Pay for friends? These friends who NEVER have your back, wont call 911 to help you, or show up at your hospital bed to threaten you to keep silent? F that.
Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it, you obviously haven’t tried it so you don’t know everything on this topic, you’re ignorant.
tellurye and you’re also talking behind a keyboard too so don’t say shit, I bet you wouldn’t go up to a fraternity member and say shit.
I disagree. Everyone I’ve met outside frats are unloyal and out for themselves.

Frats are known for more than just hazing, but from my experience, athletes and frats overlap quite a bit
"you're just going to have to trust them"... I'm glad we got answers.
All I can say about greek life is you'll never understand it if your not in it and we'll never understand the point of view of those who oppose it. No point in arguing it, there's valid arguments on each side. Just try and understand people are different and people like different things so stop bashing them for it. That goes for both sides.
Greek life was awesome in college !
@@johnpuleo3176 best choice I’ve made in college is joining it
The whole "meeting people and making strong bonds" excuse for joining the Greek scene is BS.
GDI
couldn't have said it better myself
Marlin Walkup it doesn’t sound like generalizing to me, sorority’s are just as pointless.
Don’t pay for stupid friends,
Maybe if men could make friends like normal we wouldn’t need literal boys’ clubs. Frats are dens of alcoholism and violence and they largely operate with impunity because they bring in donations for the school. Im glad you had a good experience but at the point where dudes have died and there’s still little to no oversight, I don’t think frats are worth it.
"These are not things that can just be purchased."
Yet you literally purchased them, you dunce.
It's just bottom feeders all the way down.
one quick google of that kids name and you find which frat hes from 😂
I go to a school where greek life is big and i can tell you first hand greek life is absolutely disgusting.
Do you tell them to grow up and you’re at college to learn not have 4 extra years of high school?
What school do you go to
It is 100% not like that at my university and has been incredibly beneficial to me.

People act like Penn State is the only college with frats

Dude, ur spot on..

Word of advice: you can still make friends in college... for free!
Join a regular club
If u dont feel comfortable, dont do it. I did it. Made friends for life. Didnt have to PAY for friends. But make sure u concentrate on class. If pledging affects ur grades, dont do it.
Your parents paying for uni is not for you to "have fun".
Are we delaying adulthood these days?
because they're kids, bro. how old are you?

Why does everyone else have to prevent you from being stupid?
because when alcohol is involved, it’s hard to be 100% responsible for yourself with your impaired judgement
