Some people find ammo comparisons boring. That´s Ok. I do not really get why those people watch them anyway. I have a good idea of the format and watch it for the information. Entertainment is a bonus not a requirement.
I had a buddy in the Marine Corps who had a purple heart from catching a 7.62 from an AK right in his chest. His body armor stopped it (flack jacket with sapi plates) but he broke 3 ribs and spent a lot of time in the hospital. But the lesson learned was that it was the difference between dying or living in a shit load of pain.

Excellent question. Given the most likely threats won't have body armor can a person logically select ammo based on one impressive feature. How much damage without armor? Potential for over penetration without armor? Thanks for bringing the ammo to my attention!
The one thing Paul teaches is experiments beats theorising all day long, but sometimes you just can’t help yourself. I am going to guess that because this thing didn’t deform when hitting body armour then they wouldn’t deform on the meat target alone. They would go in faster, come out faster and get stopped by the 20th rather than 1st layer of the new and improved fleece bullet stop. Would the extra speed cause more shock damage? You decide. I am more puzzled why they described it as a hollow point when it was not a hollow point. Surely it wasn’t just marketing because marketing would have used the latest hip, sexy term like “XBP - XtremeBallisticPiercer”

People are starting to call this sort of round an 'Enhanced Cavitation' type, where the external shape creates damage by increasing the hydrostatic effects. Some designs, at least, seem to accomplish this. Any number of people have tested the 'Extreme Defender' ammunition on FBI-standard gel tests and they seem to function as advertised. More tellingly I sent some to a friend of mine in Texas that often needs to shoot feral hogs, and he said the wound-track resembled that left by a 9mm JHP.
Lookup viper weapon systems g9 and underwood meat test. However it's important to note that the underwood will win because g9 doesn't sell the hot underwood loads to civillians, probably due to their own political beliefs
From the Patrol Rifle Instructor Course I attended 25 years ago, it was taught that shooting at body armor with a handgun is a waste of ammunition and time. The preferred target is the head, if it is stationary (rare), but almost as effective is the pelvic girdle below the body armor. Many bones and one major artery branching into two. It would put the person down, cause a lot of pain and maybe open up a better target of the head. Much practice was performed of shooting high and low rather than center mass.
Paul, I love the information I gain from you. It's truly valued, thank you. Based on this video I won't be choosing to spend over $2 per round. 2 important things were were left out. 1. A check on 3a armor. 2. A meat target test without armor to see if over penetration may be an issue. I've been watching you quite a while and know the caveats... you just speak of what works for you ; ).
Expensive as it may be, I am glad you can at least find defensive ammunitions. Basically nothing but FMJ in my area. Granted my child emperor of a country leader, has banned all handguns, and has a deep seeded hatred for law abiding gun owners.

I do not put myself anywhere near Paul's level of training, experience or abilities, let alone his extremely impressive wealth of knowledge. I am a retired LEO and have considered this scenario ever since the North Hollywood Shootout (1997.) My conclusion is to practice with my weapon (issued duty-sidearm and EDC off-duty carry) to make shots on unprotected areas of the body, including the legs. These shot might need to be taken from across a major boulevard like in North Hollywood and I am comfortable shooting at 50 yards+. If you can achieve hits on peripheral parts of the body it might change the dynamics of the situation enough to give you other areas to target from improved ranges. Although if it comes to that you had better be carrying more than the ammunition in the pistol. It ain't a perfect tactical plan, but it is a plan.
@@yo646 The pelvis is a good place to target, if you get that opportunity! You hit that bone and I'd expect that the dynamics would change very quickly. And a "miss" of the bone might still end the fight.
Paul _ one reason for the poor terminal performance of the G9 77gr EHP in the body armor test would be that the armor deformed the special groves/fins on the tip which are the main driver for the wound channel creation in the soft tissue. The sample you displayed looked blunted enough to be no more than FMJ style once they exited the armor. That is the challenge for all these copper EHP style bullets. They must retained their tip form to be more effective then FMJ or JHP bullets in the soft tissue/gel. Perhaps if the tip of the bullet was hardened steel while the shank was still copper or copper jacketed lead, then it would retain it's effective shape after penetrating the body armor. Great video I like to very much. I'm aware that a lot of companies like to boast and inflate the values they print on muzzle velocity and such. Having said that I saw a review of this ammo called Liberty defense ultra light and it's a 50 grain plus P ammo that travels at what the box says is 2040 ft per second which is hauling butt. Another fellow on here on RUclips that is did a test of it and found that it actually not only does what the box says but was creating velocities at closer to 2400 ft per second according to his chronograph and he shot the same ammo out of a pistol carbon with like a 12 or 14 inch barrel or something and was getting 2600 ft per second out of that ammo and it was way less than either of the ammos you reviewed you can find it for like $38 a box on Optics Planet which is still pricey for 20 round box but it's not as bad as $44 and this stuff definitely delivers what it claims. I'd love to see your review on it with your meat test and see how it fares. It makes no claims of being armor piercing or anything like that it just says it's a excellent defense ammo and even though it's only 50 grains it's still delivers like 462 ft pounds of energy which is comparable to $124 gray 9 mm round energy dump wise. But it was a great video I love to see this kind of stuff. And I think you have a great sense of humor I'm always entertained.
Seriously impress with Paul, once and again great videos. I do understand that some people may be bored by some of his videos. But Paul is NOT just and entertainer but and educator too. If you want pure entertaining there are channels for that, I do subscribe to Demolition Ranch and enjoy watching him blowing stuff. In Paul's videos I learn not just about the ammo or the gun or whatever, I learn how to apply the scientific method to my shooting. How other people do things, like cleaning an AR-15 with soapy water. I learn how to best proceed to pinpoint the flaws in the gun, the magazine, the ammo, one or the other. And sometimes all of the above.
Thank you Paul, this was a great video. I asked a question earlier on what to do about mass shooters or other threats wearing body armor, and I am pleased to have been answered. Now as for the price of the ammunition and my piggy bank, we may have to do bit of negotiation there.
It feasible, perhaps consider shooting your target-groups also through the chrono at the same time. You get to double-up on the info you are gathering anyway, but also it might show us something about the shots that you are taking the blame for. With the spread in velocity in the 124 gr (91 fps) it could very well be that the flyers you say, "really are just you"...might really be "POI shift due to velocity spreads". Thanks for dishing out the cabbage to do this testing for us!
@@martshearer498 yeah, no. Have you ever shot through a chrono or even know how much they cost? He just put 12 rounds @ ~$2.25 ea. for just the chrono numbers section in this one video. So, $27 worth of extra ammo for a single video. View his channel content and see how often he does this. 5.4 videos like this would pay for a new ProChrono. And if you are hitting the chrono with shots, then you either have it set up weird, or there's something far more wrong than inaccurate ammo. Not to mention the main point of my post - the flyers are unknown reason and he almost always blames himself. He may truly know & be right - or may not be. After all, though...he's shooting through the chrono anyway...so what difference does it make if there's a paper target on the other side of it and he's aiming at a bullseye?? None. Other than getting two readings; the velocity AND the POI.
@@martshearer498 The main reason I'd understand, would be logistics & the possibility of it means perhaps having to move things. As he does it, he can leave the chrono put and fire all shots, as with his target shots, he can leave them put and fire all groups (aside from hanging new targets). But moving the chrono a few inches isn't exactly a huge task.
Hey Paul! If you can Get ahold of it I think you’d be more impressed with G9 APC or First responder if testing through armor. The external hollow point is actually designed to be a civilian load and not perform as well through armor which can be seen in the deformation.
Yeah those are solid brass rounds armor piercing but sadly they need to see a law enforcement certificate from your chief or something. Not enough to just show them your l.e. card

See! This is why I absolutely love the meat target test over ballistics gel. I think it shows more realistically what kind of damage a round can do to a bad guy. Gel is okay for what it tells us. What it was designed for. But nothing more. Wound channels mean nothing to me in the grand scheme of actual damage. But broken ribs and freshly squeezed orange lung tissue? That’s the real deal right there!
I prefer the meat target for the same reasons you list, but I also like to see wound channels for length, diameter, and over/underpenetration. Together they appear to assemble a more complete data base to me.
Exactly. I've never understood the disparaging of the meat target. it is an excellent analog to a body, where ballistics gel is a great analog to... Jell-O.
I know he has done 5.7 vs body armor before but manufacturers have reduced powder in the rounds to work better for the ps90 ( the magazine will pop up after 20 round due to no delay in the blowback). Bullets he tested before might not penetrate body armor now.
No comparison. Thought the ammo costs about the same, the 5.7 pistols are far more expensive... also, the real AP rounds are not available on civilian market.
@@nocturnalpulse6720 not really, the ruger 5.7 is only $800-900 which is well within the high end 9mm pistol category, and there are also pistol AR systems like cmmg's banshee kicking around at $1400. FN's five seven and ps90 are a little on the expensive side at $1400 and $2000 respectively, but that's kinda just FN as a whole being a bit more expensive than their competitors in every product they sell.
Back in the late 60s when I had just learned to ride a motorcycle, I went to a motorcycle shop that had helmets for sale and on one of them a sign said the following. "If your head is only worth $10 then this is the helmet for you." I apply that same thought to the ammo that I carry today. I'm always interested in better performing ammo.

I don’t go for the new Gucci product. If it’s better and costs more that’s fine, but when it expensive just because it’s “cool” then I will pass.

One option would be to learn where the 80 grain ammo hits with your gun compared to your standard self-defense ammo, then carry the 80 grain ammo in your back-up magazine. Practice head and groin shots with your standard defense ammo. You are more likely to need the extra penetration against body armor or a barricaded assailant if you need to reload.
Based on some of your previous videos where you discuss different types of self defense I would be reluctant to carry this ammo for what could happen after a self defense shooting. Depending on the district attorney or jury I can see it causing issues. When it comes to real life self defense incidents I definitely listen to what you have to say.

I'm highly entertained by ammo testing. I cannot seem to find better ammo than Hornady 115 gn ftx for defensive ammo and Blazer, Remington, and Winchester for range ammo.
@@12ealDealOfficial my dad bought 4000 rnd of blazer aluminum. It cycles great in all my 9mm guns. Usually I can find Remington and Winchester 115 grn fmj for a decent price.
winchester makes good defensive ammo👍 everytime ive dumped out my hornaday carry ammo (yearly) ive had at least 1 if not 2 primer strikes with no fire... is why i changed to winchester
Good evaluation. $2+ per shot is not expensive for lifesaving, but practicing body armor drills with "ordinary" ammo, that costs 1/8th as much as the G9, becoming proficient, and then carrying that same "ordinary" ammo would probably be a better expenditure.
Yup, the thing about body armor is you can shoot someone in the pelvis area and they fold up like a lawn chair then go for the neck & head if they're still resisting on the ground.

Paul has commented several times about the likelihood you'll leave the super expensive ammo at home, because you have too much invested in it to use. I think I'd feel that way about this stuff.
2 bucks for 1 9mm bullet is definitely expensive. And when you look at the damage done by "conventional" ammo (~25¢) your target would probably be laying on the ground in pain anyway, soo....

It's designed to hit soft/liquid pressure and push outward. There's a video of a guy shooting this through a bunch of meat and it drills some bigger than 9mm holes through those. Anyone who is not happy with any of the content you put out should hit the trail. Your videos are the best. You are the real OG of the RUclips gun channels and easily my favorite. Just keep doing what you do. Underwood extreme defender or extreme pentator ammo is about 15 bucks a box cheaper and seems to out preform this ammo.

The sample you displayed looked blunted enough to be no more than FMJ style once they exited the armor. That is the challenge for all these copper EHP style bullets. They must retained their tip form to be more effective then FMJ or JHP bullets in the soft tissue/gel.
Perhaps if the tip of the bullet was hardened steel while the shank was still copper or copper jacketed lead, then it would retain it's effective shape after penetrating the body armor.

Great video I like to very much. I'm aware that a lot of companies like to boast and inflate the values they print on muzzle velocity and such. Having said that I saw a review of this ammo called Liberty defense ultra light and it's a 50 grain plus P ammo that travels at what the box says is 2040 ft per second which is hauling butt. Another fellow on here on RUclips that is did a test of it and found that it actually not only does what the box says but was creating velocities at closer to 2400 ft per second according to his chronograph and he shot the same ammo out of a pistol carbon with like a 12 or 14 inch barrel or something and was getting 2600 ft per second out of that ammo and it was way less than either of the ammos you reviewed you can find it for like $38 a box on Optics Planet which is still pricey for 20 round box but it's not as bad as $44 and this stuff definitely delivers what it claims. I'd love to see your review on it with your meat test and see how it fares. It makes no claims of being armor piercing or anything like that it just says it's a excellent defense ammo and even though it's only 50 grains it's still delivers like 462 ft pounds of energy which is comparable to $124 gray 9 mm round energy dump wise. But it was a great video I love to see this kind of stuff. And I think you have a great sense of humor I'm always entertained.

I do understand that some people may be bored by some of his videos. But Paul is NOT just and entertainer but and educator too. If you want pure entertaining there are channels for that, I do subscribe to Demolition Ranch and enjoy watching him blowing stuff.
In Paul's videos I learn not just about the ammo or the gun or whatever, I learn how to apply the scientific method to my shooting. How other people do things, like cleaning an AR-15 with soapy water.
I learn how to best proceed to pinpoint the flaws in the gun, the magazine, the ammo, one or the other. And sometimes all of the above.

This is my favorite gun tube channel. PH never disappoints to be interesting and funny.
It feasible, perhaps consider shooting your target-groups also through the chrono at the same time. You get to double-up on the info you are gathering anyway, but also it might show us something about the shots that you are taking the blame for. With the spread in velocity in the 124 gr (91 fps) it could very well be that the flyers you say, "really are just you"...might really be "POI shift due to velocity spreads".

Paul's method is sound. If the ammunition isn't accurate, he could strike the chronograph. That's more expensive than the extra time and ammo warrant.
@@martshearer498 yeah, no. Have you ever shot through a chrono or even know how much they cost? He just put 12 rounds @ ~$2.25 ea. for just the chrono numbers section in this one video. So, $27 worth of extra ammo for a single video. View his channel content and see how often he does this. 5.4 videos like this would pay for a new ProChrono. And if you are hitting the chrono with shots, then you either have it set up weird, or there's something far more wrong than inaccurate ammo. Not to mention the main point of my post - the flyers are unknown reason and he almost always blames himself. He may truly know & be right - or may not be. After all, though...he's shooting through the chrono anyway...so what difference does it make if there's a paper target on the other side of it and he's aiming at a bullseye?? None. Other than getting two readings; the velocity AND the POI.
@@martshearer498 The main reason I'd understand, would be logistics & the possibility of it means perhaps having to move things. As he does it, he can leave the chrono put and fire all shots, as with his target shots, he can leave them put and fire all groups (aside from hanging new targets). But moving the chrono a few inches isn't exactly a huge task.

Hey Paul! If you can Get ahold of it I think you’d be more impressed with G9 APC or First responder if testing through armor. The external hollow point is actually designed to be a civilian load and not perform as well through armor which can be seen in the deformation.
Yeah those are solid brass rounds armor piercing but sadly they need to see a law enforcement certificate from your chief or something. Not enough to just show them your l.e. card

See! This is why I absolutely love the meat target test over ballistics gel. I think it shows more realistically what kind of damage a round can do to a bad guy. Gel is okay for what it tells us. What it was designed for. But nothing more. Wound channels mean nothing to me in the grand scheme of actual damage. But broken ribs and freshly squeezed orange lung tissue? That’s the real deal right there!
I prefer the meat target for the same reasons you list, but I also like to see wound channels for length, diameter, and over/underpenetration. Together they appear to assemble a more complete data base to me.
Exactly. I've never understood the disparaging of the meat target. it is an excellent analog to a body, where ballistics gel is a great analog to... Jell-O.

I think it would be interesting to compare this ammo to 5.7x28mm ammo.
I know he has done 5.7 vs body armor before but manufacturers have reduced powder in the rounds to work better for the ps90 ( the magazine will pop up after 20 round due to no delay in the blowback). Bullets he tested before might not penetrate body armor now.
No comparison. Thought the ammo costs about the same, the 5.7 pistols are far more expensive... also, the real AP rounds are not available on civilian market.
@@nocturnalpulse6720 not really, the ruger 5.7 is only $800-900 which is well within the high end 9mm pistol category, and there are also pistol AR systems like cmmg's banshee kicking around at $1400. FN's five seven and ps90 are a little on the expensive side at $1400 and $2000 respectively, but that's kinda just FN as a whole being a bit more expensive than their competitors in every product they sell.

Back in the late 60s when I had just learned to ride a motorcycle, I went to a motorcycle shop that had helmets for sale and on one of them a sign said the following. "If your head is only worth $10 then this is the helmet for you." I apply that same thought to the ammo that I carry today. I'm always interested in better performing ammo.

I don’t go for the new Gucci product. If it’s better and costs more that’s fine, but when it expensive just because it’s “cool” then I will pass.

One option would be to learn where the 80 grain ammo hits with your gun compared to your standard self-defense ammo, then carry the 80 grain ammo in your back-up magazine. Practice head and groin shots with your standard defense ammo. You are more likely to need the extra penetration against body armor or a barricaded assailant if you need to reload.

Based on some of your previous videos where you discuss different types of self defense I would be reluctant to carry this ammo for what could happen after a self defense shooting. Depending on the district attorney or jury I can see it causing issues. When it comes to real life self defense incidents I definitely listen to what you have to say.

I cannot seem to find better ammo than Hornady 115 gn ftx for defensive ammo and Blazer, Remington, and Winchester for range ammo.
For years, I've been using Blazer aluminum for range and Blazer brass for when I feel fancy.
@@12ealDealOfficial my dad bought 4000 rnd of blazer aluminum. It cycles great in all my 9mm guns. Usually I can find Remington and Winchester 115 grn fmj for a decent price.
winchester makes good defensive ammo👍 everytime ive dumped out my hornaday carry ammo (yearly) ive had at least 1 if not 2 primer strikes with no fire... is why i changed to winchester

$2+ per shot is not expensive for lifesaving, but practicing body armor drills with "ordinary" ammo, that costs 1/8th as much as the G9, becoming proficient, and then carrying that same "ordinary" ammo would probably be a better expenditure.
Yup, the thing about body armor is you can shoot someone in the pelvis area and they fold up like a lawn chair then go for the neck & head if they're still resisting on the ground.
That body armor stopped the Magtech at 18:55, but that is still going to mess up their day. Thanks Paul for the entertaining and informative video.

2 bucks for 1 9mm bullet is definitely expensive. And when you look at the damage done by "conventional" ammo (~25¢) your target would probably be laying on the ground in pain anyway, soo....

THIS IS MY CARRY AMMO!!!! Love this stuff. Paul, if you see this try a follow up video using the G9 external hollows against a fluid/soft mass target. It's designed to hit soft/liquid pressure and push outward. There's a video of a guy shooting this through a bunch of meat and it drills some bigger than 9mm holes through those. The best part is that it's soool freaking lightweight. Half the weight of my old hollowpoints I used to carry. It's like removing an entire pound of weight
Anyone who is not happy with any of the content you put out should hit the trail. Your videos are the best. You are the real OG of the RUclips gun channels and easily my favorite. Just keep doing what you do. Underwood extreme defender or extreme pentator ammo is about 15 bucks a box cheaper and seems to out preform this ammo.
