Century Arms is and always has been notorious for sketchy quality control and BOM on their products. They used to import parts kits and manufacture their own receivers. I've personally seen some that performed flawlessly, and other that suffered catastrophic failures in less than 1000 rounds.
That about sums up all the commentary. Some people have had very good experience, some very poor. It appears the poor experience is typically older rather than newer and with models other than the VSKA (not always, but most of the time).

I own both AK- and AR-platform rifles, and I've done multiple-day rifle courses with each. I don't have a bias for or against either; they both have positives and negatives. I did have a chuckle at one course with about a dozen students. Only two of us had AKs; the rest were mostly ARs, and some of them were very expensive. At least half of the 5.56 group had to come off the line at some point due to serious malfunctions. I think this was back when smaller custom shops had just gotten popular, so people were spending a lot of cash on souped-up shooting bench princesses with 10 lbs of tactical garbage stuck on for looks. I didn't win any gold medals for tightest group, but I didn't spend time at the fixit table either.
This is exactly the correct comment.......I see a lot of very defensive people shitting all over Century for making a good, reliable AK that folks can enjoy ....that's affordable. In the Marines, way back....my M-16 A2 never let me down....iron sites and all,

My feeling after owning several Century AK's (and having problems with some of them) is that with the introduction of the VSKA rifles they have changed their quality game to the better.

Paul this is your channel and you run it how you damn well please but there are many of us that enjoy watching you shoot all the rounds. Thank you for all the firearm education you provide and I look forward to learning each time.
A lot of AK enthusiasts do have American AK Derangement Syndrome and do not believe redemption exists for firearm companies that once had a bad repetition. The idea that a rifle company can improve their product is completely beyond their ability to believe. Paul's presentation here is fair. Many videos like this one, showing the reliability, accuracy, and functionality of this rifle is fair. I have yet to find someone with Century Arms AK Derangement Syndrome provide current, reliable evidence that this rifle is as dysfunctional as they claim. Most their evidence is from a one off lemon, which every firearm company has one, or from obscure reddit post without quantifiable evidence, or from outdated material. That being said, this is my number one favorite Paul Harrell video.
In the most manly way possible, I love spending time with your videos! Your common sense view points are exceptional in these times, and your non tacticool logic is superb! Thank you for your time and effort making these for us!

I've had my VSKA "Trooper" for a couple of years now- great rifle (Except for the triangle 'Circle 10' stock, which makes it sit WAY too low and is uncomfortable...but luckily that can be changed). The bad reputation that Century Arms AKs had comes from earlier models when they first started manufacturing their own AKs, and used a cast trunion as opposed to a forged or machined trunion. These modern ones have machined trunions made from tool steel and are great. A very reliable no-nonsense rifle.
Paul, thank you for your no-nonsense point of view in all things "gun." I have found through the years that it is seldom - if ever, appropriate to hate on a particular brand of anything (car, gun or otherwise). There are "lemons" in the car world as well as the gun world. I own a 1999 F-150 that has nearly 300,000 miles on it, and it still runs great, while I know guys who have had brand new ones blow out their engines or transmissions. I think Century Arms AKs are similar. Some may not run while others run flawlessly. THANK YOU for laying down a heavy blanket of CALMING COMMON SENSE on the situation! I appreciate your humor and demeanor! Please keep it up.

My Yugo M70 is my shtf go to for sure. Have ar s but don’t have as much confidence. I was also armorer in military and the direct impingement dirty fast.
Great video. At 14:28 your reference to 'real conditions' is spot on. I have always termed it 'field conditions'; and after all, I think the design theory behind the AK was, per Soviet doctrine, for it to perform well enough, not excellently, in the field.
It like All military weapons were designed to a specific job. The AK-47 at that time was to hit a human being anywhere on the body during a conflict by a pretty much Non-Trained Soldier! It Performs Like it Was Designed!
@@mikeks8181 Absolutely Mike and spot on. I was referring to the AK's construction quality and accuracy discussed in the video. The Russians are known to not waste recourses to make thinks 'look good", but instead to build quality only if and where required. So for example, WWII Soviet tank parts were machined to high tolerance where needed, but only rough finished where not.
I have watched Paul for years and have learned a lot, I really like his sense of humor , This video has got to be some of his finest work. I don't know how many people worked on this one but they all deserve kudos on this.
Sounds like the argument I used to hear all the time some years ago about the AR platform, where people were still repeating outdated information from the '70s, whereas today's ARs are perhaps the finest rifles of their kind in the world.
He's actually not a smart ass, that would get him nixed from the great unbiased channel.... he's plain and simple, from my perspective and experience, just plain knowledgeable and correct
Two points: first, hearing the opening notes of "Montage" made me literally laugh out loud. Well played! Second, a Century-import WASR-10 was my first semi-auto rifle purchase in 2009 or 2010. I take it to the range, and I keep getting failures to feed. An embarrassingly long period of investigation later, I came to realize that when the fine folks at Century built the receiver, they milled out too much material on the left side of the magazine well, so magazines were wobbling side to side under recoil and (I guess) the feedlips were getting in the way of the bolt. Now, I was a broke-ass college student who had just blown six months of disposable income on rifle, magazines, and 7.62x39, so there was NO WAY I was getting rid of the thing; it was one of the Super-Cool WASRs with the Super-Cool native front Super-Cool hand grip! You CAN'T get rid of something that Super-Cool, so I shimmed it with a couple of pieces of cereal box and some packing tape on the inside of the receiver. No more wobble, no more failures to feed, and it's been a perfectly serviceable rifle ever since. So, my position on Century: often trash, but trash that generally isn't TOO hard to fix (like a bent front sight post), and, once fixed, trash that becomes, if not a DIAMOND, at least a $20 dollar bill in the rough: not much, no, but nothing to turn your nose up at, either!
Point of clarification, WASR rifles are not built by Century itself, they are built by Cugir factory in Romania and imported to us here in the States. They are, however, or were modified by Century upon important and sometimes the magwells are janky. The sad fact is, they're leaps and bounds better than the VSKA Paul has in this video. AK Operators Union and other reputable RUclipsrs have plenty of videos demonstrating this.
@@DieselDog403 What I learned at the time was that you're MOSTLY correct; some silly federal law or other requires that semi-auto firearms imported into the US after a certain date (in the 60s I THINK, but it's been a LONG time since I learned this) MUST have a certain number of US-manufactured parts, or they can't be sold. Since (at least as far as *I* know) most one-time assault rifles like AKs, CETMEs, and FALs come in as parts kits with their original receivers cut through to destroy the fun-switch parts (the full auto components that make them actual assault rifles, that is), importers that sell complete guns don't really have any choice but to make their own receivers here in the States. Unfortunately, with Century, it seems they made a habit of not getting the dimensions QUITE right... Personally, I can't speak to any of Century's other imports; I've WANTED to get my hands on a G3 or a CETME battle rifle for years, but the money and availability just never seem to line up, and a new bullpup seems to come out every time it LOOKS like they might. The curse of the incurably Super-Cool-attracted strikes again, and again, and again...

Paul, I love that your promise to spare us all thousand rounds carries weight because you have posted full length thousand round tests in the past. For the record, I like the full thousand round video as well.
Paul, wonderful presentation, as always. That praise comes with a caveat. I am dissatisfied you did not demonstrate toasting a pop tart on the heated barrel of a Century Arms AK. I have read forums which state it either is horrendous at this task, or even that it can’t do it. What good is an AK if it can’t toast your Pop Tarts? Keep up the great content, and “Keep up the Fire.”
Hahahaha, Paul Harrell’s Montage absolutely hilarious. 1000 rounds, had to be taxing considering for this presentation. Mainly the gas system and how many rounds it takes before the gas cylinder needs cleaning. As always a pleasure Paul and Crew!!!!!
This has been one of my favorite videos that you have put out in a while. I am not a big "AK guy", I just like reliable firearms that are reasonably accurate. I don't compete in competitions but I can bring home dinner if I need to. I think you hit it on the head when you said that the early versions of Century Arms firearms may have had their problems and a lot of people have seen or heard about examples of those problems. You are also correct when you said that Century Arms seems to have learned from their early issues and for a while now has produced good quality firearms at a good price. I did my research and bought my first and only AK about 4 or 5 years ago. It is a Century Arms AK with wood furniture and it was accurate (thankfully) right out of the box and has been completely reliable from day one. I don't care about the AR/AK comparisons or how accurate one format is over the other. We are around the same age and I served in the military around the same time as you, Paul. I was around a lot of older guys that pushed the "I will never own a commie gun" talk, etc.. It kept me away from AK's for a long time. I enjoy shooting and I still remember how impressed and pleased with the AK I was from the very first time I shot one. So, I was very late to the AK game but I have tons of fun when I shoot the AK and that's what I like more than anything else nowadays..... having fun with reliable and reasonably accurate firearms. Oh yeah, especially when they are well priced. Great job on this video. 👍
This video almost has it all. If only he’d had a reason to surreptitiously deploy the middle digit in response to something… Fantastic as always. And big ups for the Mozambique drills!!!
Great Video Paul! I have one of the later/current VSKA builds from Century. I have replaced the furniture with Mag-Pul furniture for ergonomic fit and function. Other than that, no other changes have been made. When I first got it, I picked up two of those big sardine cans of ammo made at the bernal plant in russia, (1100 rnds more or less). I've gone through 700 rnds since I got the weapon and it is very accurate, very reliable, and the op-rod, bolt/carrier and front trunnion are in excellent shape and condition. Wear is minimal at best and the weapon has moderate, yet not really an "over-gassed" feel to the operation, (cases fly about 12-16 ft. on ejection). And I have used the weapon in several of my videos on my own channel. I've heard all the put-downs on these in the past, but never saw one that wasn't runnin just fine. Keep up the good work Paul!!
I can’t believe you actually got a montage song for your montage of the shooting. 😂😂😂. You guys are the best! And yes, practical accuracy on a gun with no optics, and not the best sights. Also, I agree completely that a 1000 rounds does not prove durability. Only reliability from the factory.
I recently bought a Zastava M70, while I still could. I might've sprung for this if it was all that was left, but I ain't buying an American made AK if I can help it. Inverse is also true for AR's.
I love my M70 as well. It's a great rifle. If you are going to go American though, Palmetto State Armory has come a long way. From the GF3 on, the rifles are really pretty decent.
PSAs are good to go, and with some of the quality control issues Zastava has been having over the past year or two, I'd rather save the $300 and get a PSA that will honestly probably be a better rifle even if snobs don't like it.
12:40 Can't be mad though, your talks are educational and entertaining in their own rights. Furthermore, we just got a Montage! and even got to see the Banana mag. What more could we want?
I had a Century C39v2 and had the extractor claw break in half around 300 rounds. Replaced it with one from a Polish kit. Then at around 500 rounds all the furniture, stock and handguard, came so loose you could freely wiggle it around with your hand, then at around 1200 rounds I noticed significant premature wear on the locking lugs, and a small chip off the secondary locking shoulder. Apparently all the C39 rifles favor the secondary shoulder for some reason after talking with two other knowledgeable owners. The chipping issue is because the entire rifle is nitrided inside and out. Making the bolt and the milled receiver the same hardness and also brittle. So instead of the bolt being a wear part, the bolt and receiver clack together until one or the other breaks. The brittle nature is also why my extractor broke. Poor casting combined with nitriding. The rifle was very accurate though. Sold it for a WASR 10 and have had zero issues after multiple thousand rounds.
I have a RAS47 that cracked the front trunnion at around 600rds. There was also some very bad peening on the locking surfaces of the bolt and on the tail of course. The peening stopped when the surfaces work hardened itself and I replaced the trunnion with a forged trunnion from an amd65. The cast trunnion was a known problem by then so I didn't want century to just put another cast part in there. It has a great barrel tho, its my most accurate AK. Haven't had any trouble since, probably at around 4k rounds now. I suspect that alot of the ras47 problems are cast trunnions that are cracked.
"And now we will have the boring part" "Grabs pop corn 🍿" *gets real comfortable and pulls up note pad because taking notes can be a valid and valuable means of remembering good information *
A big issue that comes up when you're talking about practically any AK is that the AK crowd is pretty notorious for hating anything that isn't an original parts kit directly from the eastern bloc that costs just shy of a Barrett 50. I have routinely heard from AK enthusiasts that "an AK not made in Russia isn't an AK" or "any AK made in the US is garbage" and *hate* any gun RUclipsrs who say anything good about them. I've seen people suddenly go from loving to hating Rob Ski from the AK Operators Union simply because the PSA AK47 passed his torture test.
That's actually really sad.... Idk why people have to be so toxic, especially the ones that clearly have spending complex issues to warrant their purchase. It just shows how toxic they really are. When it comes down to it, nomatter the firearm platform.... If it's reliable then it's a win in my book. I've got a knight's armament full build that's had more issues than my Ruger AR 556 16" and the ruger has seen a higher round count and is still shoots just about 0.5 to 0.75 larger groups.

I haven’t encountered an AK that doesn’t run. I’ve seen some with canted sights, but that’s about it. The only one I’ve ever had issues with was a Molot Vepr in 7.62x54r which didn’t like heavier ammo.
The VEPR in 54R is set up for the lighter ball like 150 grains and lower. Even with "light" ball mine had snappy recoil that also twisted the rifle in my hands. A Tapco muzzle brake made for an AK fixed that snappy twist like magic. It was really cheap too.
Oh man when that music kicked on for the 1000 round portion of this video, it immediately put a big grin on my face. Man this channel is just so damn much fun to watch. Carry on...as you were...
Paul, I enjoy all of your videos but this one really caught my attention since I have one of those early Century Arms AK's. It is a RAS47 with the cast trunnion. I had bought it from a friend who had plans for using it in his classes but went a different route and like yours it only had less than a hundred rounds through it. I was a bit worried I had bought a lemon so I called Century and they told me if I had any issues with it to return it and they would replace it. I reminded them that I did not buy it new. They said no problem. They told me that contrary to what has been said at the time 99% of the failures they saw were from abuse and not workmanship. I have not had any issues with mine in 5 years now although I don't have more than about 500 rounds through it. I will not say it is the most accurate gun out there but I am still getting used to it and my groups are about the same as yours. Keep up the good work and you would not be you without the "Shatneresque" pauses.
For some reason this video and the previous one have been presented at 24 frames per second instead of the usual 60 frames per second like previous videos, I suspect someone has been making a mistake on the export settings from the video editor. I hope you guys can fix this for future videos!
As I am a big fan of firearms that perform well above their price point, I much appreciate this review. I even considered getting a Century Arms AK for 10 or 15 seconds. But it didn’t take long to realize that I don’t need another rifle in yet another caliber.
www.centuryarms.com/media/Rhet/Resources/Post/Attachment/BFT47-recall-notice.pdf Every single AK they've ever made has had recalls, explosions, etc. Then they make a new model, and promise that the issue is fixed...and then there's a new recall.
I had a wasr that died on me after maybe a thousand rounds but I dont know how many previous owners it had. It started stovepiping, overiding the bolt, sometimes the bolt would essentially lock back with the empty case just loose in it. I didnt have the time or money to fix it at the time and sold it for cheap letting the guy know the issues. Now I do miss having an ak.
👍 The first two years of SIG 935 production, about half the people said "I had to send it back". SIG invariably fixed whatever the issue was and everyone who did send theirs back was happy (great customer service!). None of the 935's made since then appear to have any issues. Most will acknowledge SIG as a high quality company, but this points out that things can change when a company makes an effort to fix problems.
Nonsense. Just because Century makes a single product that isn't complete trash or an actual scam (like putting 5.56 barrels into Tantals or using soft steel bolts and trunnions) doesn't make them somehow a reputable company. Don't be a clown. Don't support them.

Paul this is your channel and you run it how you damn well please but there are many of us that enjoy watching you shoot all the rounds. Thank you for all the firearm education you provide and I look forward to learning each time.
I was hoping to see a 1000 two-litres go boom. Call it therapy.
Awesome video!!! That rifle was impressive and did a great job. Can’t wait to see a 5000 round update on it.

Thanks
Please keep it up.
coming back in 2024 for the memories.....💯
Mr. Harrell, THANK YOU for all that you do on your Channel throughout these years!

You just keep getting better! Love the montage song!!!!
Great video. Thanks Paul !
Dear Mr. Harrell, as always, this has been time well spent for me. Thank you - all the way from S.E. Tennessee
Excellent presentation as usual 👍
Absolutely loved your choice of music for the 1000 round shooting sequence. Thanks... I needed that.

@@JJoker69 Nice 😎
Same issue with my WASR. Sent it back to Century, they fixed it, now it works.
I read this in paul's voice.
I hate your sorcerory, vile warlock
@@nameisnotimportant1 I had no idea they WOULD do a repair like that! I've always thought of them as an "as-is" kind of outfit. Oh, well! My trailer-trash repair works well enough; don't think I'll ever get so annoyed by it as to take on the hassle of dealing with customer service and shipping. Just have to be sure to disclose the problem if I ever sell it!

Personally, I'm sensitized to the point of retching by the use of 'caveat'. Triggered. RUclips should do something?
Perhaps one could"rough" it and consume the Pop Tart at ambient temperature

Well said buddy, I couldn't agree more. At the end of the day. A reliable firearm is that. A reliable firearm.

Good commentary! Thanks for taking the time (and money) to put this video together.

Practical accuracy on a military based firearm no LESS! Would still do the job in the hands of someone trained with it
I recently bought a Zastava M70, while I still could. I might've sprung for this if it was all that was left, but I ain't buying an American made AK if I can help it. Inverse is also true for AR's.
Bingo.
M70 is top shelf rifle for sure

People need to watch all of the YT reviews on AK's out there. Especially the AK OPERATORS channel..
This one made me smile a few times =D thanks for the top quality information and humor.

Not to mention the amount of crap that people get for buying a Zastava.

That is what I call you sir, a trusted source!

Stay safe out there…
I haven’t encountered an AK that doesn’t run.
The issue isn't that they don't run, the issue is they lose headspace and detonate like a frag grenade.
@@peaceoutbruh7085 Never heard of that. Do you have a source for legit info??

Thanks Paul!!! Excellent as always!!!

I've had a wasr 10 for about 18 years now, never had a malfunction after around 15k rounds of wolf steel case ammo.
I have 2 wasr's and I like them as much as my Arsenal and my Zastava's
