      One tip stressed in officer survival is play the "What If" game. Run scenarios through your head while driving or whatever, and think how you'd respond to "What If" if that happened. After a while it gets to be second nature to do this. Use stuff you've seen on the news or Ytube and think "What If" that happened right here and now.
      At very least it will give your brain some direction to go instead of frozen with indecision at a time you need to be deciding very fast.

    I was listening to a podcast and the guys were early in their development, saying "um" too much. Well, I decided every time they said "um", I would draw and dryfire. The "stress" of not being able to fully predict when they would say it made it fun and I saw some improvement.
    Edit to add: 4 yds aiming at a dartboard, dryfiring as fast as I had my sights on target. Also, a few times I thought they were about to say "um", drew my weapon, only to be putting it back when they actually did say it, and I had to draw immediately! That's a really odd drill, but it was fun and may be useful...

      Ever play the "Um Game?"
      My 4th grade teacher made us play it. He'd randomly pick someone to speak in front of the class, and have them speak about a random subject of his choosing, with no time to prepare. He'd say, "Your subject is [subject]... GO!" and he'd start the stopwatch.
      Didn't matter if you bullshitted your way through if you had no knowledge on the subject. What did matter is you had to talk without long pauses (no more than 2 seconds between sentences), and without any filler speech (um, uh, err, etc.), and absolutely no idiot filler (saying, "y'know," "know what I'm sayin'," "like," etc.) unless contextually correct, such as, "I like this because..." Also no speaking other languages (unless contextually relevant).
      If you couldn't make it to one minute without failing, you were given extra English homework. If you could make it between 1-2 minutes, no homework for that night. If you could hit 5 minutes of fluid speaking without any of that filler crap, he'd give you a guaranteed A+ on your report card for English class.
      Nobody ever made it to 5 minutes (remember, these are 4th graders). Really high stress, but also fun once you could consistently beat 1 minute.

    The one thing about hunting that can't be replicated, except in a "real" shooting, is the fact that the bullet you're sending has consequences attached to it. I've taken exactly one doe in my deer hunting "career", and knowing I was about to send a round into a living thing skyrocketed my stress level. I was glad she dropped quickly and was dead in seconds, but I'll never forget what it felt like to draw a bead on a living, breathing critter.

      There is something about deer hunting that raises the heartbeat and the breathing drastically. It is probably due to "if you miss, you don't get another chance." Rabbits, squirrels, and even quail, even when suddenly appearing, never gave me that stress. There were always more than enough of them to get another chance and multiples of them.

      That shows respect for life and taking the harvest serious. Anti-gunners and anti 2A people have no idea what they’re talking about. They think all hunters just want to go out and blast everything in sight just to kill it. When in reality, hunters (unfortunately there are a few exceptions) have nothing but respect and reverence for the animal. I’m 55 and my dad and grandfather took me on my first hunt when I was 10. Although I didn’t have or fire a rifle at that age, they taught me about respect for the animal and the responsibility of the hunt. To this day, my heart rate goes up and I never take the shot unless I have a clear and quick kill shot. And I always thank the deer or whatever animal for providing meat for my family.

      I got good at it because while I know how to weld quite well, I do not have a certificate. So going and getting a welding job required me to perform very well at the 4 different interviews I really had to plan out key points I would mention and of course always be on my toes ready to answer questions that they will ask to intentionally trip me up I would make sure I got a good nights rest and a good meal. Well anyhow I got a job welding but it really required me to perform to the highest capacity I could because without the certificate it's all hearsay that you know how to weld. I even demonstrated I knew what I was doing by doing a couple welds. I had to really be on the ball it was a good experience for me.

      I recently had to sing a solo in Church, it was 20 years ago that I last sang in public and that was a one off. It certainly got my nerves jangling, so I agree it falls under Paul's training criteria. I think anything can be great practice, I mean even training a new guy at your job is great practice, they are a complete stranger, you most likely had no idea you were going to be the guy training them, and you want to do a good job and make sure they understand it very well because(atleast in my past experiences the work was dangerous) and you don't want anyone to get hurt.

    All are very good but for Paul he breaks it down to a more realistic level. By making it a more realistic level makes him feel more welcoming and more in understanding what guns are than just shoot fast and accurate.

    Regarding repetitions, my experience with high stress situations is related to competitive fighting. My first time my motor skills went out the window, and all I could use effectively was my jab and leg kick - the strikes I had more repetitions on.
    Aditional data point, it took me 8 fights to lose the stress response.

      Always interesting to see the relationship between fighting and shooting. In military training they try to introduce outside stressors into the situation before, during and after to try and inoculate you to the response. Does/did the place you train at do something similar, and if so do you think it had any notable effect on your performance those first few fights?

    • @scottm.603
      @scottm.603 3 года назад +11

      Quite true! My martial arts instructor always says "You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your training." In other words, whatever you train at until it's second nature is what you'll do when under stress.

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 3 года назад +2

      @@thatonegreenguy2842 I think the only drills of that kind we did were a circuit where you'd change exercise every 2 minutes and one "station" you had to spar, which meant having to fight with the heart rate up, and one time we did that thing where you put a pool noodle in the vertical, place your head on it, then rotate around until you're dizzy and then have to face someone who attacks you and you have to block and bob and weave to simulate avoiding strikes after being rocked. What we did the most to "prepare" was normal sparring one to two times a week (in certain weeks we'd do sparring every day), and for reference I had been sparring for a year and a half before my first fight.
      Because we move up through the ranks in the amateur circuit I think we did a lot more sparring in my gym than in other places as I felt better prepared than people on my level. But honestly I was shocked by how important it is to just go out and compete just for the experience and building an immunity to stress.

      Drills and practice can prepare you physically for your first fight, but nothing can train you for the mental aspect. Baptism by fire is really an otherworldly experience that can't be comprehended until it happens to you. The best you can hope is that you have drilled solid fundamentals into yourself so that you react by instinct, because instinct is just about the only mental functioning capacity you will have in that situation.
