Yes by the 1990's Haley began watering down his ancestry claims, as it was proven conclusively that Kunta Kinte was a pure work of fiction. Many in the black community were incensed about this, because they bought the 1976 edition because Haley had claimed it historical fact based on his own ancestry. This false claim certainly helped Haley sell a lot of books! Strangely the 'Kunta Kinte - Alex Haley foundation' website still claims Kinte was Haley's ancestor. If you go on one of their tours they will repeat a lot of the false historical claims Haley made.

Haley was sued for plagiarizing Roots, copying the storyline and passages word for word from The African and eventually settled in court paying out the author for stealing his work. When Roots was first published Haley claimed it was historical record and that Kunta Kinte was a real person, and his ancestor. When it was conclusively proven this was a lie, Haley began to change his story.

Alex Haley definitely defended his work. I'm not shocked he was sued at some point. A lot of successful people have to deal with opportunists, critics and grifters. Regardless, Mr. Haley was likely advised by lawyers to settle to avoid more innuendo, rumors and bad publicity. Besides, Mr. Haley never claimed every aspect of his book was true.
