      @Eric Perry If memory serves me right what was said to be plagiarized was "The African's" rendition of the middle passage, i.e. the voyage from Africa to the Americas. Alex Haley traced part of his ancestry to Africa and as far as I know, no one has offered any credible rebuttal to that.

      @matador5135 Because he plagiarized Harold Courolson's rendition of the "middle passage". I had already pointed this out. Haley's ancestors happened and you, unfortunately, can't wish that away.

After watching as much as I could back then, I asked so many questions not only about the Roots saga, but my own family. Yes, I was very young and compelled to know more. Mr. Haley did a fantastic job tracing his roots and turning it into an educational and timeless piece.

    Thank you for this touching tribute to Alex Haley and the Roots Mini Series, I remember watching this a young teenager when it first debuted back in 1977 Roots and then Roots the Next Generation. I can't see the reason for the remake of Roots because you could never recreate the ensemble of actors/actresses of the first series. Some things should be left alone because they can only be 'Replicated never Duplicated" Roots and Roots The Next Generation fit that epitaph.

      They did it so that the younger generation would connect with the miniserien too and keep on watching it. A few actors they recognized etc.

It is a miracle the family stayed intact after slavery was over, what a miracle, I remember the series in the late 70's, we talked about it & watched it in school. What a miracle this family survived than later prospered.

    I've always admired Mr. Haley's tenacity in finding out his legacy. I'm Irish, and my family emigrated here in the mid-1870's to escape our enslavement by the English aristocrats. They took our land, our homes, our dignity because they were our superiors. Upon arriving in America, there were signs all over that "Irish need not apply." But here's the issue: it is extremely difficult to trace our roots. Records of the poor Irish were burned or destroyed along with our history. All people deserve respect from their fellow men/women. Even the homeless guy on the street. We don't know their story, we only assume that their worthless or a drain on society. Take the time to talk to them, make them a sandwich, etc. Without compassion, we cease to be human.

      @@jacksonheathen2092 The oral tradition is the way most of the world passed down information in previous centuries, as literacy was the hallmark of the few educated and elite. The oral tradition is not to be disparaged as not a conveyor of some truths. Also, for starters, a creative work is a representation of a reality-it is not reality itself, just as an Impressionist painting is not a direct and accurate representation of a historical moment- it is a perspective that reveals some elements of the reality of a historical moment. All creative works are, by their nature, filtered through the one creating. On top of that, a tv show that is a derivative of a book is just that-derivative-and rarely represents a book exactly-it is a different type of work. The point is, whether it is a painting, a show, or a play, the work is not a documentation, but a revealing of a perspective that makes a statement or that inspires. Whether specific occurrences actually took place according to Alex Haley in his book or someone else’s doesn’t matter.The point is that, ultimately, the show “brought to life” some experiences of slavery.

    When Roots was published in 1976, Haley initially claimed that the story was a retelling of his own ancestry and based on years of extensive research which he also said was backed by historical documents. Amongst many claims, he stated as fact that Kunta Kinte was his ancestor who was renamed Toby Waller, and Chicken George was the son of Tom Lea. Genealogists began researching Haley's claims and found many of his stories to not only to be inaccurate, but blatant attempts to misdirect his readers about his own genealogy. It has never been proven, outside of Haley's 'oral tradition' that Kunta Kinte was a real person. There was so much misinformation in Roots that black intellectual Stanley Crouch called Haley "a ruthless hustler" and Roots "a hoax". With the mounting evidence against his genealogical claims, by the 1990s Haley shifted gears and began to downplay the accuracy of Roots and his ancestry in the story. It is astounding to this day, many in the black community still believe Kunta Kinte was a living, breathing person, and not a myth invented in the mind of Haley.

    To think, whether we know of them or not (as elementary as it may be yet profound I have always thought it) we all have great, great, great, great, great, great grand parents who long ago laid the foundation for our existence today. Would they be amazed to see what we see and how far their legacy and their lineage has grown and survived?

    Much as I love the final scenes of Roots: The Next Generation, Alex Haley was mistaken about his ancestry. Wikipedia gives the most concise explanation, backed by its sources: "Genealogists have also disputed Haley's research and conclusions in Roots. The Gambian griot turned out not to be a real griot, and the story of Kunta Kinte appears to have been a case of circular reporting, in which Haley's own words were repeated back to him. None of the written records in Virginia and North Carolina line up with the Roots story until after the Civil War. Some elements of Haley's family story can be found in the written records, but the most likely genealogy would be different from the one described in Roots."
    While it turned about not to be what Haley thought, that does not lessen his emotions or experience; he really thought he had found his ancestor, and that joy is just as real. His research was flawed, and the rest was the accidental creation of a legend. I wish it had been the absolute truth.

    • @VeracityLH
      @VeracityLH 2 года назад +1

      Ahem. What I said was "While it turned about not to be what Haley thought, that does not lessen his emotions or experience; he really thought he had found his ancestor, and that joy is just as real."
      Purposefully misunderstand me if it suits your need. I said Roots is an amazing story, representative of all humans who suffered this cruelty. Every time James Earl Jones finds his confirmation at the end I cry with joy. But that is not the same as a written record.
      This is part of the tragedy of this history. I've been working in genealogy for 20+ years and still found tracing any of my AA daughters in-laws ancestors before 1850 near impossible. Going back to Africa was impossible. I can't trace my own Native American ancestry either, which is a very different history but suffers from the same dearth of written records.
      But not having enough written records doesn't lessen the impact of this story, which represents just some of the cruel tragedy of this experience. Pretending that it is proven when it isn't, *does* lessen the impact because people who would otherwise be inspired or impacted may be likely to dismiss the whole thing as a lie.
      Don't lessen the impact.
