- The 3 stages of the Trans Atlantic Trade route was cotton to the Europeans, money to the African chief and captives (free larbor) from Africa to America.. Captain learns the tools of the trade.
I love the way this 1977 Series used American iconic father figures like from the Brady Bunch and the Waltons to play these amazing yet disturbing roles, so brave of these actors, surprised Huge Beaumont didn’t sign up.
Good thought, but Hugh Beaumont was in poor health by that time, and would've not been able to keep up with the demands.
Robert Reed "relished" a part like this. Remember he was a "Dramatic" Actor who studied at Northwestern University (Megan Markle's Alma Mater), and he also studied In London, England at RADA (Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts). Other alumni from the US were Ray McConnell (Ex Dr. Joe Martin) All My Children and Tamara Braun (Ex Reese All My Children) who was part of the first Lesbian Wedding on A US Soap. Other Alumni have been Joan Collins and Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, Maid In Manhattan). The Man who played Mr. Gardiner also played Hutch McKinney on Dallas who was fired by Jock Ewing for Stealing from him and was Pam's "Real" Father.
And Bonanza!
@@robertdubs9466 REMEMBER...MR REED NABBED AN EMMY NOD FOR HIS PART IN THIS!!!
...MR GARDINER (WILLIAM WATSON) WAS ALSO A COP IN MARCUS NELSON MURDERS?(1973)..KOJAK PILOT TV MOVIE...HE DIDNT CARE FOR BLACKS IN THAT EITHER! ...
You can tell that the Captain really had no desire to pick up slaves or be involved in the slave trade
Yet he still did it.
its a way of making money in those days. its his job as a captain of a vessel as unpleasant as it seems..
How will he pay his rent?
From what I've read, working on a slave ship was not a pleasant occupation at all. I believe most men employed on such vessels had to be loaded up drink by a recruiter before signing themselves up.
He sold his soul for MONEY, it's a shame what people do for money, from sucking dick to killing a man. (Money is the root of all evil)
Capt Davies is portrayed here like he's got a conscience. In the book, he was a monster.
I think having a conscience does not necessarily make you better. Knowing something is wrong and doing it anyway does not undo the harm.
@@DellaStreet123 That’s tough but true. As an 8th grader watching it in school, his sensitive conscience was the one way I could identify with anything about the story.
As an adult I think “he felt bad but he didn’t do anything about it”.
@@MalloryNewcomb just think that 200 years from now, there could be a movie made based on current practices taking place worldwide today. Look at the Southern border and the raping of women, sex trafficking, selling off of children to people trying to cross the border.
Well the book was fiction and so is the show so it doesn't matter
@@MalloryNewcombHe didn't feel bad. The people who had to endure that felt bad.
Ed did good job as captain Davies. Think everyone did convincing Job in their roles.
He did. I actually got to meet him a few years back.
Did his character rape that one woman presented to him in the ship scenes?
Die Ed asner die😡😡😡😡😠😠😠😠
U know he voiced as Carl Fredrickson from Up and Uncle Ben from Spectacular Spiderman
@@HenshinHeroesMedia Yes, that's what the viewer is expected to think. When the scene abruptly ends, we get a shot of the Lord Ligonier plowing into a wave as a "Use your imagination" hint.
My 4th grade teacher screened our class the full series of Roots in 1991. It really messed a lot of us up in class.
punisherthunder That's good. You had a great teacher. Kids (adults as well) today hear the term "slavery", and fail to understand the magnitude of the evil people had to suffer through.
200 years ago, 4th grade kids living in that system wouldn't have thought anything of it. 200 years into the future, I wonder what kids will say when they look on the injustices of our world. Would they look kindly upon our wealth inequality? And Bush/Obama/Trump's policies to keep it just that way? Would kids 200 years in the future look upon the police shootings of our time as any different from the lynchings of a few decades ago?
@@goodman528 Don't equate Obama with The Bushes and Trump.
@@JAWrightonline Because Obama is black?
@@goodman528 No, rocket scientist. Don't lump him in with the Bushes and Trump because Obama's policies 1) Were not tailored toward the rich (Trump's are) 2) He did not put us in a recession/depression (the Bushes did) and 3) Trump is trying to erase every policy Obama put in the books.
If you equated Obama with Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, or Bill Clinton, I wouldn't have responded. Race has nothing to do with it, blowhard.
4:00 did you bring any RUM? "YEEEEESSSS" fine let's TALK! 😂😂😂😭😭😭😭😆😆😆😆😆😆
You can see the Captain's expression change the moment he heard "Gambian coast". He really didn't want to go on a slave ship.
He could have turned down the offer.
That was the whole point of his character. He knew slavery was wrong and immoral but reluctantly went along with it to make a living
The captain tosses the branding iron aside and looks at the thumb screws in disgust. He knows this "assignment" is just cruel and immoral.
Slavery is outlawed worldwide, yet it still goes on.
India,China, Russia Pakistan, Sudan Indonesia,Philippines,,Nigeria. Just a few places where its still legal
@@kevindouglas5333 It's not legal here mate. It goes on illegally buy it's not legal.
It wasn't outlawed ANYWHERE in 1750, except in countries where it was unprofitable.
This miniseries was a who's who of actors/actresses.
I was 12 when this first aired and it was hard watching 2 TV dads, Ralph Waite (The Waltons) and Robert Reed (The Brady Bunch) portray their respective characters. Especially Ralph Waite as I was a big Waltons fan.
I saw this in school before I watched The Waltons (I'm young XD). And I was like "Wow, I can't believe Slater was a good guy!" Great actor.
Ralph Waite was like a combination of Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne.
Sick monsters are now burning in hell.

@@Name-x6i It's kind of funny when you think that the white monsters who are now burning in hell have black skin now. LOL! (Not that all white people are monsters, just the pure evil ones. Just like all races, creeds, ad religions, there will always be pure evil psychopath narcissists who slither to the top. Look at the evil lying left right now all around the world.)
The actor that played mr slater looks like he was born to play an old timey sailor lol
He also played the iconic role of John Walton in The Waltons...
This is probably off topic... But I always perceived the captain (Edward Asner) to be to me what Long John Silver from Treasure island would ideally look like. Its probably comparing apples and oranges - but on face value... He was Silver for me.
Capt Davies was based mostly on Newton, the cat who wrote Amazing Grace.
Amen
John Newton came around to the evils of slavery, but it took decades.
The captain is the only person here with a heart
He is just starting out. The ones who are in the slave trade for long had to either toughen up or get out.

Mr. Gardiner played by William Watson was also on Dallas in a Flashback Scene where he played Hutch McKinney who worked for Jock Ewing and stole from him. He got fired and when he told Rebecca Barnes they were planning to leave together but when Digger found out that Hutch was The "Daddy" of Rebecca's Baby and not him, he shot the man. Willard "Digger" Barnes confessed this to Miss Ellie on his Deathbed so that Jock wouldn't go to Prison.
William Watson was always type cast as a bad guy.

Ed Asner and his son flagged my brother down in the Hollywood hills and asked him for a ride. They got tired during their walk. My brother was happy, and thrilled, to take them home.

Another brilliant scene from Roots. After his shipmate tells Captain Davies how many shackles they have and how they have an anvil to punish an unruly slave, Capt. Davies insists on shipping out on the Sabbath, because it is the "Christian thing to do".

As a white man, I often have difficult times understanding how we are supposed to live in a haze like stuff like this wasnt extremely heinous and permanently damaging, life altering, and how people before me treated others like this. I'm not sure how to mentally deal with it. Im thankful for movies such as this, more grim, and dark, actual scenes that are difficult to watch, not even a percentage of how the actual experience would affect another individual, true history, although I've heard certain aspects of the film were fictitious.
All we can do is try to be a better person tomorrow than we were today. Chances are, if you had been around back then you would have either (A) been a part of this or (B) not done very much about it.

I don't think the props department had seen a thumbscrew before. Look how big the holes are - could tighten them all the way and have room to spare.
While you are right that they probably didn't bother to take a look at real thumbscrews, I think it's not impossible to use those to inflict torture. I think I've seen thumbscrews before that were used in combination with tight-fighting metal rings that were put over the fingers before they were put into the vise. If the rings are thick enough and the right shape, you could use them with this thing. -- One thing I noticed when I saw historic torture implements in the Gottorf museum was how tight-fitting they were. One implement was referred to as "the scissors". You could put somebody's arms into it and then drag her around by it for others to ridicule and pelt that person -- in a similar way a pillory was used. The guide said that it was predominantly women who were humiliated that way, and I knew that people were smaller in past centuries, but to me it looked unrealistic that any adult's arms would fit into those holes. They looked small even for a 10-year-old child's.
Addition: One thing I noticed is that a) many thumbscrews didn't limit themselves strictly to the thumbs but could be used to put in as many digits as you wanted and b) some didn't have an actual screw to tighten but a lever to pull. I suspect that they were meant to extract a confession by asking a question and then pulling the lever strongly but briefly, inflicting a shock of pain instead of pain that builds up, as you would with a screw. Or you could pull, hold, and give the person you are torturing the hope that you will let go if that person says what you want to hear.
Peace my brother and sister you know it’s better put war aside why because you will love too
My mother showed me this movie when I was very young. I remember asking her about the captain. I didn't understand. I said, why was he doing this when he obviously knew it was wrong. Mom just shrugged and said: He was a hypocrite. I think that was the moment I learned the word "hypocrite".

Captain Davies also was disgusted at the ship's crew raping the slaves to "ease their tensions" with Mr. Slater referring to these women as "belly warmers." They send one to Captain Davies' quarters and I believe he gave into temptation.
