    This was from Roots 1977, and it was probably the first time on film that slavery was presented as a horror. Before the Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's, Hollywood films (Birth Of A Nation, Gone With The Wind, The Littlest Rebel, etc.) depicted slavery as a wonderful institution.

      Not the first time a movie about slavery was on film, there was a movie called "Mandingo" in 1975 with boxer Ken Norton. Also, in 1969, there was a movie called "Slaves" with singer Dionne Warwick. The Little Rascals did a movie about Slavery with Buck Wheat a slave and Spanky befriends him, it was called the Little General.

    The scene that broke my heart was when the Lady was selling Rice Cakes and her Little Girl was clinging to her. In 12 Years a Slave a Lady begged for her children not to be separated.

    • @Stardust_7273
      @Stardust_7273 3 года назад +5

      Twelve Years a Slave had me sobbing in parts just from people’s silent acting. They have long scenes where you just have to watch the brutality in real time and don’t cut. It was extremely effective. There there was a part where the main character is waiting for something life changing to come through, I guess this isn’t really a spoiler given the title, but it’s his rescue from slavery, cuz he was born free and kidnapped from New York in 1841. The camera just holds on his face for a minute and a half, which I’m most movies would never work. But it’s the combination of knowing what is going on in his mind, seeing this heartbreaking mix of emotion on his face, and then he looks right into the camera, like it’s telling us we are not going to let you feel comfortable or give you a break, you are going to get a real sense of what slaves went through, or as much as possible in a movie. It’s not a movie you watch yo turn your mind off. Most people I have heard say they would never watch it more than once, and again, normally that would be a bad thing, but the movie breaks you down emotionally, so if you do watch it again, it wouldn’t be for a long ass time. Everyone in it is exceptional. I have always been impressed with movies like Roots (the older and more recent versions) and Amistad and I’ll even watch Django Unchained, accepting it’s not realistic... but 12 Years a Slave in its own league. You just have to watch it to get what I’m talking about

      @@Stardust_7273 I just cringed and shook my head at that scene. Michael Fassbender who played The Massa had a very hard time with the violent scenes, felt absolutely awful. Also he lusted after Patsy the way Tom Moore lusted after Kizzy.

      Watching those scenes is hard enough… I can’t imagine trying to act in them. I have some wonder about the children who are in these movies, the young black children… I can’t imagine that that isn’t psychologically damaging to them in some way.

    • @laminage

      @@Stardust_7273 I am sure they are told in advance that although it's hard they are acting. Remember in The Movie Version of "Hair" where Little Lafayette is crying because his Daddy yelled at Mama and he didn't know why. I'm sure they didn't say anything because they wanted him to think it was real. Folks at My Mother's Office back in the day apologized to her for what happened. Kids in Elementary Schools were crying when they saw the Ship Scene. In The Book The Young Mandika Maiden got killed by a Shark after jumping off the ship.

    I first saw this episode almost forty years ago and didn't initially understand the sexual abuse that African women experienced at the hands of the slaveholders. In this scene they are planning to rape and impregnate this woman. I wasn't sure whether the auctioneer was saying, "Put her to it" or "Put it to her." The result would still be the same. I still not clear on the "Once the whore said from bottle to bed." It's amazing how my people survived this period and help builted this nation.

      You need not feel shame for the actions of your ancestors, if indeed you even had ancestors who participated. They were not your own actions.
      That said, I do believe that all Americans - white or black, whether their ancestors were part of this or not - have the responsibility to help address the legacy of this history and rid our society of racial injustice. If nothing else, it's something we owe ourselves as Americans.

According to the 13th amendment, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." It has been ratified on December 6, 1865, almost eight months after the American Civil War ended with the Union's victory.
