I managed to get this for free this month through my PS Plus membership, so I can't really complain. The texture pop-in is still there, the framerate is still around 30 FPS compared to what looked like 60 FPS from the last two (Note: I've never played them), but I didn't have any crashes, or any bugs that you've experienced, and on top of that, they've added a few things since launch apparently. There's a New Game + mode, but it doesn't quite work as I expected it to. Most games offering this mode will save your game's final progress after exiting the credits. This game doesn't, so if you beat the game, but choose to hold off on selecting a new difficulty for NG+, you'll have to continue right before the final boss again. When you select a difficulty, the game goes back to the Title and Menu screens. From there, selecting Continue will start NG+. All of your items, your souls, your skill points, and your enhancements are carried over. Your hollows are actually locked again, to my own surprise, and that is something I appreciate because they were, in a way, essential to the game's progression. However, the configuration of your enhancements remain the same, so you know which weapons you left them on. Honestly for this part, I wish God of War's NG+ worked the same way with its second main weapon. The items you find throughout the world are pretty much the same, though I haven't gotten far to see if any of them have changed. What has changed are the addition of new enemies scattered throughout the world, with new items they drop for further enhancements to your weapons, and now your armor. There is also the addition of a "Classic" battle mode that is more in line with the first two games. Items are instantly used, with no waiting through an animation of Fury using them, and your own attacks can be interrupted if you need to dodge. At the time of writing this, I've only reached Vulgrim the first time in my second playthrough, so I don't know if anything else is different, and I've already pretty much written an essay, so I'm going to stop it right here. As a final note to you, Liam, look up Amid Evil when you get the chance, and maybe also take a look at the Descent game series from Interplay. I didn't grow up playing Doom or Quake, so Descent was my childhood 3D gaming experience.

I played this game on release. After I passed it the first time, I had fun, but definitely thought it to be the weakest of the series. However, I played it a second time after a few patches and DLC and honestly, the introduction of Classic mode, made the game alot more fun. While the game is more simple in it's mechanics, I really liked it. And I would like to add that the side weapon's elemental properties apply not only to dodges, but to their charge attacks. I melted most bosses, literally with a high arcane and flame hollow. If you have not yet, revisit the game and purchase the Keepers of the Void dlc. It brought new life to the game and made it, for me at least, stand shoulder to shoulder with the other games.

Good video overall. I liked D3 enough to Platinum it, but it's not a title I'll ever return to. It has gotten a lot better with patches, particularly the i-frames which I bitched about on Reddit for some time. But the devs listened and improved on a lot of the features. They also brought back Classic mode, meaning the way things were in D2. That is, healing is instant instead of having an animation, and dodging i-frames are identical to D2. I actually really liked exploration despite the vistas feeling uninspired. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with D4.

hmmm... I didn't have any problems with the combat system or managing multiple enemies, but maybe that's because I treated it as kind of a more action-focused Dark Souls and not a more punishing Darksiders. And since I didn't really like the combat systems of the first two games, I really enjoyed this game.
Also, I mostly used the fire hollow throughout the game and really made use of the upgrades.

  • @OzPayn

Enjoyed the video, I really loved Darksiders 3 and find it to be my favourite of the 3 games. I don't really get your criticisms of the combat and level design (hollow switching is the coolest part of the combat idk why you're abandoning old hollows for the base damage stats) but I can see if you aren't investing in enhancements and weapon upgrades then exploration would feel unrewarding. Wouldn't it be more of an issue with enemy scaling over the systems themselves though? The game isn't scaling enemies up in difficulty enough to encourage using the higher level combat techniques, which require you to invest in enhancements and upgrades to be effective? idk either way I didn't really encounter the issues you presented but I think it still is indicative that the game doesn't quite prop its own systems up enough.
Either way I'm glad Darksiders is back and I'm relieved I enjoyed 3 as much as I did. It's a shame you didn't quite get the same experience from it.

I was personally really dissapointed with this game. I think it was awesome gameplay wise, if it wasn't I wouldn't have platinumed it - but I don't really like the souls mechanics, it just felt like a step backwards after the improvements second game did and I just really liked coming up with different builds in the second Darksiders and tailoring a playstyle that suited me best (even though the items are RNG based it's not that hard to focus on specific builds) - here you have just souls and shards - it never felt rewarding to loot anything here to me, also some of the design elements and puzzles were just outright frustrating - especially that fucking tornade in The Scar.
And the story is just... So bad in my opinion. It's well acted and some encaounters and moments are good, but it picks to something really interesting in the last two boss fights - which is like last 20 minutes of the game... The character development of Fury is just not enough for me, when the rest is just giant fetch quest that does nothing for wordbuilding and enhancing the overall lore...
I played on hard and apocalyptic and I would say that upgrading your weapons, leveling and finding the right enhancements for your playstyle is crucial if you want to make it. While some enhancements are mediocre at best, some fully upgraded are outright broken - like the Havoc power one or the one that scales your damage to the amount of souls you're carrying...
It's hard to be objective here, because Darksiders 2 was so much better in everything imho that even though Darsiders 3 is like 6-7/10 game I always feel gutted when I think about what it could've been if it build up on the second game...

The problem I had was the combat never really evolved, each weapon used the same inputs, and you never really unlocked new combos, I was looking forward to switching forms dmc style mid combo to invent new combos.
the fire one sucked, I only used lightning and force.
That wrath attacks were really lame and lackluster.
The platforming was clunky and ugly compared to the first 2, Ieam, they completely dropped the wallrunning and item /gadget based progression.
The armor upgrades were just pallete swaps, boring.
They removed EXECUTIONS, in the game that had the most potential for cool executions.
On console the game has to load for 20 seconds, sometimes within 10 seconds of eachother.
Exploration gave nothing of value, I just bought upgrades from volgrim.
I've never been so dissapointed in a game.

Nothing like Dark Souls? How about every single enemy being able to kill you with a small amount of hits, having to level up through currency, no actual checkpoints (only starting at Vulgrim spawn points), losing your currency when you die, and a bad camera? All very Dark Souls like. Luckily this game has a legit good combat system with combos and aerial moves, actual platforming, and a character that moves like they should in an action game. The only problem is that they ripped from From Software too liberally. If they wanted to borrow things, fine. But did they really have to use currency for leveling up, losing it at death, and having to wait for an annoying animation when healing? I understand that some of this has been fixed with patching, but it still annoys me that the game took so much needlessly from From Software. Everyone is doing that these days (like that disappointing and shameless new God of War) and I don't understand why. From Software has made great games, but they are overrated as hell and their style isn't even that remarkable. If anything, I think Darksiders would have benefitted taking more from Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, and Yakuza. Those games have legitimately amazing combat systems that never get old while SoulsBorne games get redundant and played out. The best SoulsBorne style game I've played through is Nioh, and that's not even From Software. Team Ninja took the formula and made it WAY better funny enough. I'm just sick of everything having to be like Dark Souls and Bloodborne when games like Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden have much better combat systems.

Darksiders 3 is marvelous. Sure, it's different from DS1 and DS2, but it's still amazing.
Great combat, great monster and world design, great voice acting and I really like the story. Dramatically streamlined upgrade system is unfortunate but it works.
As for story being smaller scale, kinda expected after the excessive excess of Darksiders 2. They had to tone it down dramatically, make the overall scope even smaller than Darksiders 1 in order to be absolute sure they could even make a profit.

Almost each time you complained about something I just found myself thinking "That's what I like about it.." - When it comes to exploration for loot, I found Darksiders 1/2 which were already too easy got even more so if you spent even a little of your time exploring. - I found the combos fairly interesting to be fair, sure it's no DMC5 but it gave options especially when rapidly switching holos and on the harder difficulties the game had a level of tension I have rarely experienced in one of these kinda games. - Personally I never found the bosses to feel as unfair as you make out but I am playing on PC with a mouse and keyboard so I never had to deal with the lock on. - Puzzles I found to be ok and I would not have minded a few more of them but I would not have wanted them, again, too simple for the most part even if well designed. Where I do agree with you however is on the shop and maker upgrades feeling tacked on.
PS, never trust anyone that asks for pre-rendered cutscenes, they look awful, age poorly and massively increase game download size.

I tried switching hollows mid combat too, but it didn't feel very rewarding, every weapon only has a 3 hit combo and a "after whip" combo, no delays, no special variations, just the same moves... over and over and over.
Personally I just dumped all my upgrades on the spear and hammer, the others felt lame.

  • @Rookie694

Okay, I have finally finished the game.
I had no bugs whatsoever (PC) in world load times, no framedrops etc. the game looks great, I guess they fucked up the PS4 version.
I disagree strongly about the newer weapons making the older ones obsolete. I used the flame hollow till the end, I used it even more than the whip. That could be because I actually had fun looking around for relics and adamantine. When you use the upgradesystem consistently you can use whatever weapon you want.
The enchantments are awesome, I infused my flame weapon with lifesteal, the whip with lurcher generation upon destroying stuff and the crossblade with the i-Frames.
I agree on the story, it is great. The twist hit me hard! And even harder when I realised that Lust wanted to give fury the location of envy (who was supposedly alreadey in captivity). When Lust said that I was like "HA! You idiot I already got her!" ... seems like I am the idiot.
I disliked Fury in the beginning, she was annoying to listen to, but the more sins I killed, the better I liked her character.
(I only want to attack your thesis, not you as a person, I hope I wrote this well enough for it to be clear)

Agreed with you on DS1 and DS2, couldn't really see eye to eye with you here. Most of your points I was like ??? and I'm not sure how you came to the conclusions you came to.
I did play it way after you did, and after some pretty significant patches. Weapons are side-grades, not at all strict upgrades. Enhancements and upgrades feel incredibly meaningful, playing with or without them is super different. Using the i-frames from wrath attacks (yes, all of them) and choosing your weapon to change the nature of your arcane counterattack, as well as the reach, speed, and properties of other attacks made swapping on the fly super cool. Also, the hollow weapons do elemental damage and have their effects on charged attacks, and like from the second game, the perfect timing release giving you armor and a faster animation allows for some real mastery expression. For example, the flame hollow arcane counterattack rockets you like a fireball towards your attacker, making it amazing at closing in on ranged opponents after dodging a projectile. Charged attacks from the force hollow will break enemy guards. There's a lot to play around with.
If you really want to like this game, give it another try. I ran apocalyptic difficulty for my second playthrough, and that felt like the right difficulty, especially once I got to the DLC content. Its generally accepted that the classic mode or whatever it's called that makes the combat play closer to Darksiders 2 is the best way to experience the game.
The only negative I agreed with was the consumables being clunky and obnoxious.

I'm playing it again after playing 2 (again) and i'm finding myself enjoying it infinitely more. While 2 felt it repeated itself over and over, and felt almost padded ouy with sheer size, 3 felt more tight and contained, with more enjoyable metroidvania dungeons and abilities that i just enjoyed more over the prince of persia esk climbing system. I also LOVE Fury for her personality. She has softness at times, but she is quick to temper much like her brother, War. And she has some solid one-liners.

Maybe they've fixed it by now. I couldn't get the game at launch due to the fact that I was unemployed and had only 27 cents to my name. I'm still going to get this game and hope that they make Darksiders IV. Wouldn't it be great if they did more of a gun-fu thing in Darksiders IV. Different attachments and ammo types for Strife's pistols and other potential guns. Then Darksiders V could do a GTAV and let you play each of the horsemen, each one feeling different from the other as they did in their respective games. I haven't gotten my hands on III yet but I have played the first two. I'd hate to sound like a Call of Duty/Madden/FIFA/Assassin's Creed fanboy, but I'm sure a lot of the problems with the game that were there at launch are fixed and are continuing to be fixed as I type out this comment. I can understand why people have such mixed feelings about Darksiders 3, but it's currently my favourite of the series so far, and I hope the remaining two games get made. Yes, two. I believe the plan was to have four games each focusing on one horseman, then the final fifth game which would feature all four. My personal hope is that they make 4 a Gears of War style cover-based shooter, because that would be so wonderfully different from the others.

    • @LiamTriforce
      @LiamTriforce  5 лет назад +4

I don't know if using a cover system is the best idea for Strife, considering we see him jumping off of another enemy and blasting demons at the end of DS3. I imagine a Max Payne-esque experience for DS4. Something that feels free-form and interesting. I feel like a cover system would restrict Strife's movement way too much. Plus, cover systems aren't always implemented well, so that worries me to think about. Idk lol.
But yeah, a fifth game with all four horsemen would be awesome. I think that was Vigil's original concept for Darksiders. Co-op action game with the four horsemen of the apocalypse. At least, that's what I remember from Gameumentary's doc on the series.

The story confused me, even at the end. Some twists felt too abrupt. The puzzles were cool for the most part but that one tempest puzzle with a corridor and a block was infuriating. Nothing of value would've been lost if they just cut it out. Yup, sorely needed a tally list or a map, too.
Nice review, I agree for the most part.
Gotta disagree with the weapon part. They aren't linear upgrades, one after another. Some are faster, some are slower but more damaging, one has a ranged counter that the others lack, one makes shielded and armored enemies easier than the rest while having more stun power, too, and so on. There's some variety. They can also have different on-hit effects.

I have just replayed Darksiders 3 two more times, both of which were on the Normal Difficulty, and I gotta say, it was rather....inconfedingt.
The first time I played Darksiders it was terrible, enemies and bosses being able to OHKO me in a few hits, not being able to do much damage and so on, I got a lost over 20's times and it was not plessent.
My second playthough however was a bot better, I only got 6 lost, reason being is that I can remember to do stuff, such as look around and get upgreades, using the Warp Pads to gain access to the area to upgread my HP and weapon damage, or use the pickups to gain currency, granted I still got bucrap a few times but at least I can remember the locations, beat all but the third boss without loseing and even knowing a trick to beat the second fight with Wrath and so on. So credit when its do, I gotting used to it.
While it IS true that the game becomes easyer when you know what your doing I thing this game should have not been built this way to begging with, we didn't need a highter difficulty just for fans who want Hard Core Games like Devil May Cry or Ninja Giden and we also didn't need a Vugrim checkpoint system.
That being said, while I did enjoy it the third playthough, I still think Darksiders 2 is the best game in the series, still can't wait for Darksiders 4.;)

They kinda have to make a Strife centered game. That doesn't mean it's going to be an fps though. Maybe they'll make the combat similar to Bayonetta (refer to my own comment on this video). Maybe in Darksiders IV they can have Strife be in search of a weapon from the Abomination Vault. IDK. They haven't given us a full reason to completely ditch the series just yet.

But if they stop this dark souls bs and give us a game where we can choose which rider to play with, without gating anything behind specific riders or forcing us to switch horsemen in any way... perhaps the prospect of playing as the reaper again will bring me excitement for the series once again. After all, even something as simple as the series art direction presents a lot of potential. The art direction itself was enough to inspire me to get into art again, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was enough to draw me back in, provided it's not hindered by garbage decisions like in Darksiders 3 and Genesis. After all I've never stopped playing the first two games, though I played the first one much less than Darksiders 2.

Let me preface this by saying I love your channel and I think you give good critiques. That being said, there are multiple points in this video that are just factually wrong: secondary weapons not having elemental effects, the upgrade not mattering statwise, the usefulness of beating the side bosses, the hollows being statistically stronger than the previous ones, etc. Comparing it to DS2, I can see why you would be disappointed, that's the pinnacle of the franchise. But I think you give it way too much shit, specially compared to DS1. There's a line in the review where you say all you need is to spam the whip. I totally disagree with the statement. If you do this in higher difficulties, the game will kick your ass, specially with shielded enemies. So the game actually incentivizes you to constantly be switching your hollows to better deal with the situation: flame for single target DOTs, storm for dealing damage to multiple enemies at the same time, force for cc, and stasis for slows and tankiness.

Wow...just....wow, that was a great review, everything that you said basically sums what I personally think about Darksiders 3.
I think the game looks beautiful, the combat can be fun at times, the over world is interesting, I think some of the puzzles are creative and the story and characters were a nice change in pace, but this game holds back for me due to its higher difficulty, bland bosses, horrible check point systems, bland weapons, odd crafting system, confusing layout, bad camera, the overall clunky combat and awful dodge system. I wanted to like this game, I REALLY DID, but it has a lot of things that can really get under my skin.
Tho you did forget a few things about Darksiders 3.
    1) Higher difficulty: Darksiders 3 is known for being one of the harder games in the series, it caught many fans (myself including) of guard, now granted, I don't MIND harder games to say the least, but I think it gets too hard for my taste.
    2) Bad checkpoints: Unlike previous instalments, Darksiders 3 handles checkpoints in a VERY odd manner, that guy you buy stuff from? He is your checkpoint, and let me tell ya, they can be VERY far apart, so if you haven to lose, you are sent ALL the way back to that checkpoint.
    3) Long "game over" loading screens: Getting defeated is a VERY miserable time, due to how Darksiders 3 basically loads up the entire Hub World (at least that's what I think), it takes nearly 30 seconds (I tested it) just to load you back up, and considering the game's harder difficulty, that is just pure BS!
Also, that was a pretty nice point you have in 15:53, I though there was something buggy about the dodge system.
With that being said, it really is a shame that Darksiders 3 turn out to be like this, after that long six year hult after the awesome ness that is Darksiders 2, I was REALLY exited for Darksiders 3, but its sad to say that it was this.....dull, there ARE some aspects I like about this game, but it is hold down by too many flaws that makes it the weakest game in the Darksiders series, in my opining.
Now hopefully from the ending of Darksiders 3, we might be getting a Darksiders 4 real soon, and maybe it might be an amazing game.
Despite all of this, if there is anything I have to say, I'm just glad we have a Darksiders game.

Also the oblivion ore which you use for upgrading your armor(you can only upgrade your armor on ng+) cant be bought from vulgrim till ng+3 you have to explore and find those red eye monster that drop it. Hell the game has 9tiers of ng+, with every consecutive playthrough you find better materials for upgrading your gear, I am currently at ng+2. It seems to me that you only played the game once and you dont really know what you are talking about.

The bugs... never had any of those issues on PC (back then)
Sunday night playing DS2 (Dethinitive) fell through the entire universe barely an hour into the game.. had to reload, it didnt even kill me when i hit the ground.
Now that ive got a beast mode PC /w a 4090 i dont think ill have an issue hitting a steady 60. (Or 120) in DS3. And as mich as i complained about the hard difficulty on DS3, I think i may do it again.. because i remember being mad desperate for any help i could get while playing it. The bosses could be absolutely brutal. (To the point it hurt my enjoyment in all honesty.) But thats my fault for treating it like a darksouls game and maxing the difficulty.
After watching this video and about how theres no reason to care about secret bosses and loot like you get an overubundence.. yeh, sounds like hardmode is the way for the game?
Either way im hyped to get back into it. Also getting back onto Genesis afyer this and hopefully getting a friend to tag along, if not ill do it solo.

It feels like you didn't give the game a chance after seeing the overwhelming negativity people threw at it in the beginning. Like you kept pushing yourself through with a certain mentality while the game needed an entirely different one and you instead of adapting, just got more and more frustrated with it. I might be mistaken but that's the feeling I got while watching. And that is why I think if you'd just play it again with a more open mind you'd like it a lot better this time. Also I think this might have had something to do with the initial negative reception because it's "Very positive" now on steam, which I wholeheartedly agree with.

There’s no need for yet another game set during the same time as the first two. Giving a bit of insight with Darksiders 2 felt great. This time it feels lazy and moronic. It should be noted that I’m speaking about things that I know without playing the game. It it speaks volumes that they couldn’t even make me give the game a chance. I don't know how big my enjoyment with it will be, but i want to see it through until the very end for myself.
In all your videos you have made darn good analyses of all games' contents, going in-depth like not many (to my knowledge) do. If i ever get around to creating proper games with a team and everything, i will make sure to keep this series of retrospectives in mind. I don't know how much that compliment is worth to you, coming from a random goober off the internet who carries an interest in Orcs, but still, thank you for taking the time and effort to create these videos. Not just for myself, but for potential fans that have discovered this awesome but underrated series thanks to you, or have yet to discover it by finding your channel.
