The Darksiders series is not only unique in its concept, but for its potential to become legendary. Imagine if different studios worked on the different horsemens’ combat? If only they had a larger budget allocated towards MOCAP, coop implementation, fleshed out stories! I hope publishers don’t abandon this, because after all, Strife still needs his game .

I do like how the combat of each game emphasizes how differently each Horseman fights.
War is a massive juggernaut with 11 health bars. He can block, parry, or just armor through enemy attacks. He smashes enemy defenses through the sheer force of his attacks. He cleaves through hordes of enemies with ease.
Death is a whirling dervish of blades. While much squishier than War, he's by far the fastest of the bunch. He excels in keeping the pressure on with constant attacks and never letting up. He has various magical abilities and great mobility that let him deal with crowds easier.
Fury is a precise duelist. Being slower than Death, she relies on more precise dodges rather than dashing half-way across the arena. She specializes at creating openings and counterattacking, picking apart her enemies' weaknesses. She struggles against larger groups, mostly relying on Wrath attacks to clean out the fodder so she can keep her focus on the more dangerous enemies.
I do wonder how they'll characterize Strife's combat in Darksiders 4. Sure there's Genesis, but the overhead isometric camera skews it a bit, and he shares the gameplay seat with War.

  • @TuxedAaron
    @TuxedAaron 2 года назад +10

Well, the thing with Fury is, when you first see her, you understand right away that she's not like her brothers. But perhaps it's more accurate to say that her brothers weren't like HER. After all, War, Strife and Death were unique among the Nephilim, in that they had no interest in marauding around the known worlds, killing everything they saw just for the sake of killing. That's why they agreed to the New Pact, so they could put a stop to the slaughter. Fury, on the other hand, was EXACTLY like the other Nephilim. She only agreed to the New Pact because she had sense enough to see the writing on the wall...and she knew that if SHE didn't sign on, somebody else WOULD...and she decided she'd rather make a deal than be dead.
But then, as Darksiders III draws to a close, you see Fury graduate from being a Nephilim to being a HORSEMAN, probably for the first time ever. Unfortunately, this metamorphosis is kind of one of the main plot holes of which you speak. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love where Fury ends up, too. And I understand how the whole point of the story is for her to see herself in the Seven Deadly Sins, as she takes each one of them on, and ultimately come to the realization that she just doesn't want to be that way anymore. But you don't actually see her EXPERIENCE anything in-game that calls for that level of introspection. She just changes and grows, primarily, because the game SAYS she does. Meanwhile, we're sitting there going, "Uh...I'm sorry? I was there with you the whole time. When did YOU allegedly learn these lessons?"
At least, that's just MY thinking on it.

    • @MayorHairBear

    • @TheStraightestWhitest

We definitely see her change. Lust exposed it more than any of them. ''Lust showed me what I could become. It's not who I want to be.'' Fury does still have a soft spot for her brothers. She only realizes it once she sees them bastardized and on their knees. That's where he introspection begins.

    • @TuxedAaron
      @TuxedAaron Год назад

@@TheStraightestWhitest Well, I'll grant you that scene revealed a soft spot for her brothers that she never truly acknowledged before. But as far as actually seeing her WANTING to improve, that was kind of the beginning and ending of it. She only really overcomes the temptations of Sloth and Gluttony because the whole idea of her just sitting around, doing nothing and growing fat is just completely counter-intuitive to her essential nature as a Nephilim. Sure, the story has her acknowledging that not working on her failings was, in itself, its own type of laziness. But it wasn't out of her gaining any altruistic desire to become a better person, over the course of the game's events. It was just her feeling sorry for herself in the final chapter after she realized Envy had been setting her up the whole time and she never saw it coming.
We don't see her experience anything in-game that would encourage her to work on her anger issues and quit being such a hothead by the time she goes into Round 2 with Wrath. The fight starts and somehow she just acquires this abundance of self-control. And it's never exactly revealed just what wisdom the Lord of Hollows was trying to impart to her, throughout the entire ordeal. Evidently, Fury at least appears to understand, but we, the players, aren't really let in on it.
I'm just saying, you know? It would have made Fury's metamorphosis from Nephilim to Horseman feel a lot more organic if those points had been added.

    • @FatalFist
      @FatalFist 2 месяца назад

The game hands down has the best AI and most well designed world. I loved having no mini map and great landmarks. The puzzles and platforming is even more natural plus I love the metroidvania style. In case people say they just jumped on the souls cline train that's not true actually the lead game director was a huge souls fan and decided he would like that to be the direction they went in. Darksiders 3 probably alsobha some of the best boss design in the series honestly. Most bosses in DS2 were easy and DS1 was all gimmicks. The Darksiders series has always been a drastically different game with each entry. Obviously the game is different and how you feel about 85 as a Darksiders game is entirely your individual opinion but for mebit took the puzzles, combat, and exploration of every game and brought it to a new level for better or worse in some ways.

Man, I hated this game first play through. On my 2nd and 3rd play through, I still think this is the worst Darksiders game out of the franchise so far lol. Thought Fury was a terrible protagonist and her character development was predictable af. I agree with you greatly that War and Death were not incarnations of their namesake. War was stoic and duty bound, getting the job done even though he knew he was being played for a fool. Death was sarcastic, talked way more, and fiercely loyal, when he said he would storm the white city to rescue War, you believe it. IMO, no thought was put into Fury at all, they chose the obvious/safest route and she was dull for it. Again, my opinion, but a better route would easily be a play on "Hell hath no Fury like a woman scorned" would have put her more inside the world the first 2 games built up. The retconning was pretty bad too, and they did my boy Ulthane dirty! They removed his rough attitude and made him hella passive and "supportive." Ulthane from Darksiders 1 wouldn't have put up with any of Fury's shit, and would've gotten right up in her face and dared her to make the first move.
I will say, I did like seeing all 4 Horsemen together and that Vulgrim got his personality back. Overall I thought this story was pretty lackluster and just thrown together because a plot was needed.
Outside the story, I agree that the overall gameplay feels like it's missing something and doesn't feel like a Darksiders game. While I get why the devs went with a Souls-Like gameplay, Soulsborne popularity was high af at the time, but I feel like gameplay similar to Devil May Cry would have been better for this one. Keep the attack combos, like from the first two games, but add the ability to chain them together, awesome looking, and add a combo rank system.
I'm always shocked to hear people that like the first 2 games liked this game as well, but to each their own. I ranted a lot in this comment but thank you for the video! I love this franchise and this reignites my passion for the games :)

I loved the world building they did to be honest, I enjoyed that aspect and the difficulty curve of a Soul-Lite gameplay style, was a nice addition. Didn't watch the video yet, but gotta say, I believe they should've stuck to the formula of the first game, which is a god of war clone with the diffirent flavour, and improved and built up from that, instead of changing the formula each game (a slasher, an action RPG with leveled items, and a souls-like). Maybe instead of dedicating each game to each horseman, they could establish some basis for all 4 characters and then tweak it for each of the characters to suit their style and put them as diffirent episodes in one game, so we could see some chemistry among them. I also just hate, that the cliffhanger of the first game was left unresolved for 3!!!! Games!

Fun Fact, the original gameplay concept for the first Darksiders was for you to be able to choose 1 of the 4 Horsemen and play cooperatively with your friends through the game. It was back in 2010 and I think it was Joe Mad(?) that said they just didn't have the tech to do it and make the game fun. So they instead went with 1 Horsemen per game to keep the game play engaging and fun. Personally, I want Strife to have his own game.

"Kingdoms of Amalur : reckoning" ,
that game honestly has one of my fav melee combat ever in gaming in general. i did a whole longsword only run and it was amazing. the enemy variety is insane and the variety is meaningfully implemented, and the game is huuge. has tons of combo moves, perfect blocks, dodges but without i-frames or stamina, satisfying hit feedback and impact effects etc. i give my solid recommendations for that game dont let the first hour of the game fool you. the game is absolutely underrated.

DS 3 is a step down, i mean DS 3 offers no skill tree, no special attacks all you do i ONE fury attack at a time instead of several like in DS 1 and 2 and ohya DS 3 has nog gear like DS 2 had.

I really like this game. 100 percented it on Steam. I really don't understand why it got so much hate. Maybe because of the initial performance issues and that some fans can't deal with or don't like the souls like gameplay. Well performance issues are mostly fixed and the gameplay is really good if you judge it on its own terms. I don't think that the game deserves as much negativity as it got. In my opinion it lives up to the other two games. I actually like Darksiders 1 & 3 more than Darksiders 2, since DS 2's quest design was pretty stale and the frequency of climbing around and solving puzzles was to high for me or maybe i just perceived it in this way, since i didn't enjoy going into dungeon after dungeon which didn't feel substantially different or really unique, like it is the case in Darksiders 1.

Very enjoyable, underrated game. If I had to make 3 critiques:
    1) The absence of the Horse (for virtually the whole game) greatly diminishes its "Darksiders feel" and curtails exploration.
    2) Ditching the amazing loot system of the second game (or even a variation of it) felt like a massive let down.
    3) They should have better implemented the Jump as a second defensive mechanic in combat - or had some other rock-paper-scissors mechanic to add variety and depth.
Hopefully we get to see Darksiders IV at some point, maybe they will even do a Kickstarter for it.

You already know previously I really enjoyed this game. BUT I am also pissed by it because I was aiming for 100% completion, and I played at a time some of the trophies were bugged. And so I played on the hardest difficulty and BEAT IT on it too... But the trophy never popped, not even retroactively, not even if I try to go back to the checkpoint. So I need to do the WHOLE GAME AGAIN to get it. Maybe I will, I don't know. I love the game, but I don't know if I love it enough to do hard mode again 😩

  • @JBasilix

I can understand when people say it is not a Darksiders game. Personally I see this very differently because every game so far massively changed some aspects of the previous one so it is hard to even pinpoint what a darksiders game is. The original purpose was a more mature Zelda with Hack ´n slash elements. Then Darksiders 2 rolled along and brought in a lot of rpg systems and bigger maps already skaling down the Zelda aspect somewhat. Lastly 3 brings in Metroidvania style gameplay and changes the rpg mechanics to be more soulslike to acomodate the metroidvania style. Now which of these would qualify as THE Darksiders experience? I would say none of them since all of them offer very different gameplay experiences. It is truly up to personal taste.
My favourite is definitely 3. While Death is my favourite horsemen in pretty much every category his game itself has a lot of flaws I just can´t get past every time I try to play through the game again. Meanwhile Darksiders 3 pretty much gives me everything I like: A more character driven story instead of plot driven, Metroidvania style gameplay and a more deliberate and methodical combat system. Now slap Death into that gameplay system and it would be the perfect Darksiders game for me. That is not to say it does everything perfectly. Oh it absolutely does not. It just caters more to my tastes than the others and that is why it is my favourite of the trilogy.

Nobody asked for a Souls clone. This was done because of a developer up high that has a boner for dark souls. Even the fact that they called Fury a "battle mage" is just an excuse to make her fragile. She doesn't actually have too many spells and the ones she does have are actually AOE attacks for each hallow and are dependant on the hallows she receives. Even War, the beefcake that supposedly solves every problem by hitting it with a sword, has access to 4 spells that are not dependant on any equipment.
This failure of a game would have better off not being made.

As someone qho has been playing the series since Darksiders 1, i have to say 3 might be my favorite. It holds all the Darksiders pillars, it just has a different weight for each, but for me, i found it alot more enjoyable. 1 have the metroidvania element to it's world exploration but not to the same extent as 3. Where darksiders 2 was just filled with big empty fields that genuinely bored me when i had to drag ass across them. It had the most dungeons but the first 2 worlds felt like doing the same single dungeon over and over again. Especially in the kingdom of the dead. Darksiders 3 is shorter but it's snappy. The style is honestly on point for me and the combat, while it can kick my ass, doesn't keel locking me in a room to fight hoards of enemies over and over like the first 2 and it felt like a more even mix of exploring and puzzle solving at the same time. Where things flowed i to each other, rather than walking into a space an knowing 'ah, this is an arena room' or 'ah, this is a puzzle room.' Which is something 2 is more guilty of than 1. 1 and 3 have a nice even mix of puzzle, explore, fight. And 3 doesn't drag it's ass in it's intro or in any of the specific regions.
So i think it's a Great game and a GREAT Darksiders game. Because to me, the games having those pillars but finding a new way to remix them in every single game is absolutely my favorite part of the series.

Darksiders and Devil May Cry were the only series that could still keep me engaged and even then I still would get bored part way through unless it was Darksiders 2 or Devil May Cry 3. Darksiders 3 though... oh man it was such a breath of fresh air! The combat, the map, the snarky dialogue... I needed it. I get what you mean when you say 3 feels darksiders adjacent certainly the Zelda inspired level design present in the previous games were replaced by the more metroidvania style while combat changed a little by being more methodical and souls like, as you said in the video Darksiders 2 changes fairly drastically from 1 in some areas making it hard to define the darksiders experience. When I look at the whole series though and see how differently they all play to each other I feel like the darksiders identity is defined by change at this point. While some might blame that on it being developed by a different team by the 3rd entry or more cynically believe each entry is just lazily ripping off of the latest gaming trends, I see it as a series that has never been afraid to mix up the formula to provide a fun experience while proudly wearing their inspirations on their sleeves. I think it also adds to just how different the horsemen are and how they fight to see it reflected in the overall gameplay experience across the series.

Great video and analysis, I think you did a great job breaking down all the individual aspects of the game, but I have to disagree with the conclusion that it doesn't feel like a Darksiders game. Obviously, this is subjective so I'm not saying your conclusion is wrong or anything, but to me, it was very apparent from the start of Darksiders 1 that the series core, its formula, if you will, wasn't any specific genre or game design principle, but was the completely sincere and reverent way it emulated and paid homage OTHER games. In that way, the series was always kind of a "best of video games" compilation, wrapped up in a unifying "Darksiders" aesthetic, lore, and most importantly, respect and understanding to the industry defining games they're emulating. Darksiders 1 was a love letter to God of War, Zelda, Portal, Metroid, etc. Darksiders 2 was a love letter to Diablo and Prince of Persia (among others), and Darksiders 3 was a love letter to the Souls games. There are elements that carry through, but I think, fundamentally, what makes the Darksiders franchise special, is that it's essentially microcosm of gaming as a whole. Each game is so incredibly different than the one that came before, but is still an homage to a hugely popular genre of gaming in general. They don't try to explore "new" mechanics or genre twists so much as they explore how certain existing genres and mechanics present in popular games would be if blended together in specific, "Darksiders" ways.
TL;DR: I think what makes a Darksiders game a Darksiders game is the fact that it's different they all play fundamentally different than any other Darksiders game that came before it, but still highlights and mashes together some of the best aspects of already existing games.
I really hope Darksiders 4 keeps this trend up, and goes full on Third Person Shooter, or even First Person Shooter, so that it can give the Darksiders love and aesthetic to that whole genre.

I definitely understand where you're coming from mate, it definitely is subjective with no right or wrong answer. Personally, whilst I agree the series changed from game to game the difference between 1 and 2 and the difference between 2 and 3 are quite substantial

I never finished other Darksiders game, but this game caught me for the first moment, shame in the performance at launch. But now runs smooth as butter on PS5 and Series X.

While Darksiders 2 is my favorite in the series, I've played Darksiders 3 the most as a guilty pleasure. Darksiders 3 doesn't really have any puzzles, so your pretty much just battling enemies then moving to the next area and battling more enemies until you reach the final boss.

@@MayorHairBearHaha, in my opinion Darksiders 2 is the weakest of the three. I don't know, i just feel like the game was too big, and had to much quantity, lowering the density of quality content. The dungeons just didn't do it for me, maybe because it was just too much or maybe because i didn't feel like the dungeons where substantially different from each other. Maybe both factors play a role. If Darksiders 2 would have been more compact i think i would have enjoyed it more. I think that the empty and non-engaging overworld hurt my experience, because just going from dungeon to dungeon felt so formulaic.

I had a similar experience with DSIII. Admitedly, the previous installment really spoiled me. I expected another expanding world with puzzles and platforming and gigantic bosses I have to figure out the gimmick in their defeat... but the game grew on me after a replay and when I played again on Switch, I decided this game is now my second favourite of the franchise, Below DSII and above the first one.
While I play in the "classic" mode, because I also played (and love) Bayonetta, I sorta connected well with Fury's fighting style, finding great satisfaction in a succesful dodge followed by an even more satisfying crushing counterattack. And while I found the concept of returning to post-apocalyptic earth tedious compared to the rich enviroments of its predecessor, once again they managed to make that simple enviroment truly spread out into many unique areas. Yes, you are in a single city, but places like the nether, badlands, the Crag, they all look so unique its hard to believe they belong to a single area.
As a character, Fury is a delight, unlike her brothers, she showed the most distinct character growth and development and her fighting style feels like a mix between War and Death: Agile but tankier. A true "death by snu-snu" Rider xD (and design-wise she is perfect.) The true lacking part of DSIII in the end was the soundtrack. Jesper Kyd is really hard to top and this game favoured silence and ambient noise for atmosphere, which works, but it's not so unique as DSII's fantastic tunes.
Also, I don't want to be THAT guy, but... Lust's pronoums are "they" ;) The character is canonicaly non-binary (noticeable in design and voice) and the game actualy uses "they/them" when refering to Lust, but since Gunfire are not woke idiots, they knew this is not something to draw attention to but simply act casual. The game does make a plot-relevant hint of it by saying how Lust takes many forms, not just lust for sex, which was brilliant. They could've easily gone for the femme-fatale, harem kind of Lust but no, they went for the many meanings the word "lust" have and made it a trickster of desires.

I thought I was crazy because I always liked Darksiders 3 it was fun it felt more like a hack n slash game than a Zelda clone so I could see why fans might’ve been disappointed

I haven't played much of the Darksiders games but I would like to give my input on whenever I see this type of thing happen. When a studio makes a great game and than takes it's sequel into a new direction. I appreciate it because if the likely hood of them being able to capture the same lightening twice is unlikely. In other words if they made Darksiders 3 more like 2 in all likely hood it would just be a weaker version of it rather than being something unique you can play instead when you're in a different mood. You still have a reason to go back to Darksiders 2 when you're not in the mood for 3.

I greatly enjoy DS3. I dislike the vast emptiness of of DS2.
DS3 is tight packed and challegingly fun, even though it deviate from the formula and rough around the edge.
I prefer the story progression of DS3 over DS2 as well. In DS2, corruption felt like it just jumped out of the blue. Death doesn't felt developed through out his journey as he rarely show his soft side.

I think darksiders 3 was good but the remnant games were a huge improvement for the studio. If they use the horseman with the guns(dont remember the name) for a remnant like darksiders Im all for it.

The reason DS3 failed imo. Is the fact they focused to much on Fury as a character instead of the plot. Which DS is all about.

And as a side not. It never made sense the way they put up the four horsemen. They are meant to be the horsemen of the apocalypse. And those are: War, Death, Hunger and Pest. Not Fury or else. But that is a rather small nitpick.

I feel like the game need combo or animation canceling something on the line of the dmc reboot where you start a combo with one weapon and finish with another also when I picked this game my hope that it would have been something similar to DS2 that look system was needed

To be fair, it's not gunfire games fault that Fury ended up being the douche she was early game. I remembered DS3 having a leaked or something like that and the story of DS3 ended up being the same as those cutscenes and how she was in those cutscenes were exactly how she was in DS3 proper. So I think they just took what was already there and just worked it into the game.

I played all three games recently (Did all the achievements in 1 and 2, now I just need to finish NG+ and The Crucible in 3 to 100% it as well) and I ADORE Darksiders 3. It's hands down the BEST game of the three.
I love Fury's character and how much she changes with the story.
I really like how condensed the world is, just like in Dark Souls 1, compared to the first and second game, which worlds were stretched out like in Dark Souls 2 (yuck)
I loved the last bossfight (Darksiders 1 and 2 seemed kinda bland on this part)
I love the foreshadowing that was shown throughout the game (although I only realized it after finishing the game once 😅)
The combat was great - Darksiders 3 on Reckoning was an actual challenge, unlike Darksiders 1 and 2 on Apocalyptic.
The leveling system is nice, better than in Darksiders 2
The one thing I did not like was how squishy I was throughout the game. It's because of the Reckoning difficulty level, but I was being one-shot by mere mobs most of the time, despite putting points into health lol. It was kinda annoying, but it made me fight most of the enemies and bosses hitless, so I guess it's okay.
Overall, best game I played in 2023, can't wait for Darksiders 4, will probably preorder it

I think they missed the mark with this one.In my opinion the combat should be like Castlevania LOS style rather than soulslike. In the previous games you felt the power of the horsemen but in 3 you were soo fragile. Also i really missed the dungeons and the exporation was kinda lame because of the rewards.Anyway great video i cant wait for Genesis.Dont let the top down camera fool you it is a truly a darksiders game you will be suprised.
