I really love how Death demonstrates maturity at the end of the game. He could abandon War to "undo his sin". But he understands that two wrongs don't make a right. He betrayed his people once and corruption was born. He understands that nothing good will come of it if he repeats that mistake. He doesn't allow his guilt to bully him into another bad decision. He sticks to the plan and accepts the consequences.
@@They_Hit_The_Pentagon not really. He had a choice between easing his conscience or saving War from being unjustly punished fora sin he hadn't committed. Keep in mind that Death always believed his brother to be innocent. Furthermore, he found proof that the seals were broken, in the forgelands. The wardens wouldn't have been summoned to Earth had the seals not been broken. The only reason why War was the only one sent to Earth was the Charred Council and the fact that the last seal was reforged before it could summon the other horsemen. Although I suppose you could put it like that if you're only considering War's accusation and not the fact that he was innocent, a fact of which Death was fully aware.

2:23:55 I see what you did there, Joseph Anderson. Fantastic review as always. Whatever the length, it's worth it to hear you go so in-depth when it comes to both the good and the bad of a truly wonderful game.
I seen it to the subliminal message. I had to come and check the comments to see if anyone else had seen what he did. Just a real quick shot, I had to rewind and make sure. Good job mate!
Darksiders 2 is the best darksiders in the series, not only has the game given me one of the best experiences ever but it had also given me so much inspiration for projects of my own. Words cannot describe my love for these games, especially this one.
I'll need to give it a go at some point. Got it alongside the first one in a bundle but absolutely hated the other one and never got around to trying the sequel and I feel like it looks dramatically better. The first one had some high points but it was completely ruined by having a bunch of borderline unplayable set pieces, boring combat and the baffling decision to build such big, flat hub areas when the player character moves like an octogenarian carrying a fridge. I ended up quitting that one at a section where I was given a gun to shoot enemies but kept dying because I wasn't allowed to drop it and defend myself against the same enemies that had no chance against me in mêlée about two minutes earlier. I know that the first game has fans but it's such a pain in the arse to get to the fun bits and honestly should have had a bunch of stuff cut out in favour of tighter level design and a more engaging combat system that required more strategy.
in my entire time of Playing DS2 I never noticed that. Such a neat little touch. It's like it's not just Water, as if it's something so much more substantial.
This is probably the most accurate review of anything I've ever seen. A great game and a great review. The sheer length and depth shows the amount of love and passion you have for this game and the channel. Keep up the awesome videos mate. Love your reviews and your work.
Dreadge Memes which version are u playing. I played the OG( non remastered) on a fairly old gpu (750ti) and ran on medium high 60fps 1080 with no problems
Marc Shanahan As a fellow DS fan, please give me your in-depth thoughts of DS3 as what I have heard and seen, is looking disappointing, the budget and team size really seems to have hurt Fury's debut.
SHIN BAKI HANMA, Takoshi Hitsamaru TL;DR I finished D3 in approx. 30 hours, played on Apocalyptic on PS4, got all trophies except for a grindy one. It's not as good as Darksiders 2, the combat is less God of War and more methodical like Bloodborne. The whole world is interconnected and as such there are no distinct dungeons. Darksiders 2 is a 9/10 for me, D3 is a 7/10 for me. It is much closer to D1 than D2. There also some annoying loading freezes and glitches [one caused my game to crash when entering Havoc Mode for example]. The lower budget is felt throughout but I'm still excited to see D4, and we see Strife in D3 and he looks awesome. @@spicyoctopusone repeated line that has ALWAYS stuck with me because of just how great the delivery was, is when Death tries to but cannot summon Despair. "I have to go alone" There's something underlying in the delivery, a sadness.
as good and underrated as Darksiders 2 might be, it is neither as good or as underrated as you, Whitelight. Phenomenal analysis as always, your insight is incredible and your writing witty and well-crafted. Quite frankly, the amount of work that goes into each one of these videos borders on lunacy, but I'm glad we the viewers get to profit from your commitment and drive. I'm curious, do you have experience in game development or writing? Because any studio would be lucky to have a director as committed and knowledgeable as you.
I must tell you, I just discovered this video as I was beating Darksiders 3 and it gave me a new and revitalized passion for the series. I was so hyped up by the game that I decided to do a clean run through of the first 2 games. I started and played through the whole of Darksiders 1 before I let myself press play on your video and goddamn I'm happy I did. Once I started playing Darksiders 2, I only allowed myself to watch your commentary up to the point that I had played. I eagerly careened through each portion of the game with renewed vigor as I giddily pulled up your video again for some more of your amazing insights and incredible commentary. I just finished the game tonight and with it, your video and I must tell you, it's been such a ride. I so appreciate all you've done to make this video and it's renewed in me a love for this series, which, I knew had been there all along, but laid dormant for some time. This was such a pleasure to listen to, and such a journey to embark on. Thank you. So. So. Much.
I really wanted to get into this having really enjoyed the first one. I bought the game (a second hand copy on xbox 360) but haven't yet got around to playing. I've been put over by the innumerable online accounts of game breaking bugs that occur after sinking hours upon hours into the game. It's really a shame because it looks fantastic but I can't see myself playing a game that I know could break at any time..
Even in 2022 after playing another all time great such as Elden Ring for a few hundred hours, I can still confidently say that this remains one of the best games of all time.
I believe some of the "pointless" Missions are porpusly made to create this feeling of tiredness and being sick of everyone that Death starts growing during the course of the game. I personally believe it's one of the best parts of the game, seeing death like "oh my fucking god what does this have to do with my main goal"
There's even a moment where Death kinda acknowledges this. A few in fact. One of them is helping Oran. You find the Maker's Chronicle for them just to make them remember their history and boost morale, and Oran replies to this act of pure generosity by saying ''Death, you are not as cold as people think.'' To which Death responds: ''Well, keep that to yourself, old one.'' Much of what he's doing is clearly just meant to either help or maintain the balance. We even see this in the Abyssal Forge extension where once he learns that the Mad Smith cannot contain it and that it'll spread to other worlds, he chooses to stop it personally just to uphold the balance. I think it's extremely fitting for Death. He is the Reaper. He is the end. But he is not the one who brings it prematurely. The incredible voice acting from Wincott and his stellar written sarcasm also added tons to his character.
But It still kinda sucks How they say "go certain place" then you do a shitton of task to reach certain place and then someone say "jokes on you, the Wheel of life is fucked and You will not use It, haha suck my Dick death"
That moment when you picked up a game (again) from years ago for no reason besides that the sequel is coming out and then a guy makes a 3 hour essay about it. This is what we call weirdly good timing.
Are you me? that also happened to me, and is even weirder than the same day that this video was uploaded, i started the game. What a great surprise honestly and what a beautiful game.

The amount of views are stupid. How has this masterpiece not 100 Million views already. I find myself coming back and rewatching this every few months. Bravo, Whitelight! I loved this video. It really gave me a new perspective on how good Darksiders 2 is, particularly many of the puzzles which I never really gave much thought to. I thought the editing and explanations were great, particularly the introductory compilations to each new realm were very well done. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into this documentary. God bless you and your work.
There's a small detail in Darksiders 1 that I love that many people probably missed and it "foreshadows" the whole theme of Death not being evil and actually probably being the nicest of the four horsemen, back when Ulthane gives you Mercy and War threatens him, Ulthane will say "Do I look like I'm afraid of death, boy?" and War replies with "It is not Death you should fear" referring to the fact that Death is the most merciful of the four and the one he should fear the least.
One of the most difficult things about doing voiceovers is keeping an even tone throughout. Not just one's pitch, volume, and candor, but the cadence, inflection, and energy -- reading for ~3 hours and keeping such an even tone is pretty cool. This is the first video of yours that I've seen, my first impression of you, you've set the bar pretty high. The only critique I feel I should offer in order to improve the skill you've shown with this release is this; in listening back to your productions make certain the floor baseline volume you set any portion of audio to is not used when you want a portion of audio to switch from background to foreground audio. While you are pausing for tone, after making a point, or ending a section the background volume needs to rise to a certain amount of the foreground volume. When you are playing a selection of audio from a cutscene -- in order to allow the cutscene to speak for itself -- the volume needs to be equal to your voiceover's value. Your voiceover should be the loudest audio track, but when you are silent the background audio needs to rise to fill more of the vacuum left by the absence of your voice. Audio is 60-70% of a video's perceived quality. You read well. Your reading isn't boring, you don't repeat words too often, your inflection is natural, and while you do read at a good clip it doesn't sound rushed. You've a new sub.
One of my favorite moments of this video is when it got to the end of the city of the dead section and I thought to myself "hmm, I think this is where I quit playing" and then you immediately said "I wouldn't blame you if you quit here." Bro is a mind reader
Darksiders series, in general, is an underrated gem. There's not a lot of good lore videos or top 10 lists about the game, let alone the characters. And this video alone covered everything I was looking for beautifully. This is by far the best DS II video I've seen so far. What I particularly liked about your video was the free camera view of Death riding through a new area with that area's signature music playing in the background. The lost light segment was the most beautiful and aesthetic. I also like how you took the time to explore each area and in such depth, without feeling that you were spending too much time on any one of them. And your criticism of some parts of the game, mixed with the much deserved praise to some other parts of it made this video feel like an actual critical analysis rather than a fan service or nitpicking. Your analysis of some of the scenes like the fight between War and Death at the beginning, or Death's slicing of the summoning bell and then proceeding to skydive onto the eternal Throne switching between parkouring and summoning despair really made me develop a deeper appreciation for these scenes. It's been so long since I first played the game and was stunned by these scenes, I forgot what it was like. This reminded me of that. Overall, this was a well balanced video. Complete and comprehensive. And even though I disagree with you on some parts of it like the puzzles, I learnt a lot about the beauty of the game itself. A job well done. Keep doing the good work.
I recommend to you the True Masters and Morons channel then. Sadly they stopped doing videos due to private reasons. But their lore videos, especially the ones about Darksiders are great.
@@Shay-ne3bo Well, sadly private life catched up to them. Not everyone can make content that is monetisable enough to make a living on this platform....Especially not, if you care about things like quality...
I keep coming back to your reviews. I know there's an opportunity cost but chalk it up to akrasia and more importantly, you're a wordsmith. I share your sentiment about this game and love the series. Among various of Death's lines, there are so many unforgettable ones but the one I don't think I'll ever forget has to be the one after he slays Absolom and questions what his next action is supposed to be. The way Wincott delivers that line is just indescribably great.
Jesus man. I love you xD You seem to be a real workaholic, with how frequently you upload compared to how brilliant your content is. I really respect what you do, and I also quite appreciate your taste in videogames, even if I had some gripes with your high praise of Web of Shadows, if I remember correctly. But well. For now. I will watch this video, and after that really look forward to what you got for us next (most likely the Silver Lining review or something the like)

I've watched this video before, one time when I were zoned out tired and didn't want to search for another video (it showed up in the recommended- had searched Drksdrs2 maze guides). And now it shows up, from originally listening to music- I am equally engaged, the video is still AS good as when I first saw it. It seems like there's something pulling you in to watch just a little longer, for the entire video. You have a way of telling that's engaging, making the "watcher" want to learn more. Just want to say Amazing job. This changed something in me, I can't watch another review without thinking back to this video. Every other is just too empty- still, great job!

From the montages to the background music and from the level of voice to the the dialogues, this has to be one of the best videos (and critiques) I've seen in a while. It's good to see that Darksiders 2, even with its flaws, recieves the love it deserves. Ty for this behemoth of a video.

Just gotta say I LOVE the personality Death has in this game. Snarking when he’s relaxed, aware of his reputation and willing to lean on that if he needs to, easily my favourite rendition of the character
Excellent critique and retrospect, man! I have such fond memories of this game, being one of the first that I played fully as a teenager. Enjoyed every bit of the video. You had me hooked the whole time from the excellent writing and production. Even got me cracking up a few times from your jokes. Shame it took me so long to watch it all since you released it but definitely worth it
A 3 hour video on one of my favorite series ever? And I'm two years late? For shame There are plenty of things I thought to comment about while watching this. The editing, the attention to detail, the humor, etc. Frankly I just, love how lovingly you dissect it. A proper analysis between all the ups and downs of this game, what made it fun, what made parts agonizingly dull, but ultimately why it was a pleasant experience. (However the most immediate thing is your hilarious use of "Impossible" as a form of comedy...even going so far as to not even need to complete the joke at the end.) All in all, well worth the 3 hours it took to view this. I didn't even increase the speed to 1.25/1.5 to make watching it "easier", so I hope that tells you just how thoroughly I enjoyed it.
Also I am incredibly interested in hearing what you'll have to say about Darksiders 3 on a whole. Admittedly it probably had one of my favorite stories in the franchise, though I think that may be due to enjoying Fury's growth more than anything else. Also having the franchise sort of...Genre jump (The combat differences between each game are simultaneously subtle yet substantial.) makes for, honestly interesting characterization between each rider. Also this reminds me I still need to actually finish Genesis. Oops.
I've just discovered this video and I definitely love it... It was exactly as the title said... Which is a refreshing thing to have on RUclips, I'm glad it got the recognition it did and I hope you continue to grow in the future, I hope you do one on darksiders 3 someday... (The "impossible" joke was Very funny, I hope you incorporate more characters dialogue in your future videos)

Now this is what I call a review! Great analysis of every mechanic, place and story bit in the game. Darksiders 2 is one of my favorite games and the Ivory Citadel is one of my favorite leves in any game ever, and whatching and remembering all the game once more through your review made me reinstall the game. I mean, this video is so well done that the only thing I could correct from this is that the Crow Father can access the Kingdom of Dead because, unlike the makers, he can travel to any realm he pleases even after death since his soul is older than the Kingdom and is not linked to it.
Great video Whitelight. Shared it on Facebook, hope it helps. You have consistently put very good reviews with great pacing and sound quality. With that said, merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Still the greatest review in existence about one of the most underrated games ever created. Performance issues (especially in the remasters) aside, this game is a masterpiece from start to finish. Not once did I feel bored of that game. Everything in this game has it's place, whether It's main or side quests, or simply exploring. The soundtrack is also insanely good and fits the ambience at all times. It hurts my soul that this game never got the big attention it absolutely deserved.

30:56 Neat little detail: Vegetation sprouts right as you release the water, as though it is the lifeline of that world.
in my entire time of Playing DS2 I never noticed that. Such a neat little touch. It's like it's not just Water, as if it's something so much more substantial.

For full review, check it out on Reddit:

It's really a shame because it looks fantastic but I can't see myself playing a game that I know could break at any time..
uh, how are you getting the first one to work? when I try to turn it on it keeps fucking crashing

Yep I thought since Darksiders Genesis is coming out, I would go watch my fav Darksiders Video... AGAIN.
Congrats on not having a life.
You madman.
Porpusly lmao

Death always reminded me a bit of Raziel from LoK: Soul Reaver. Like a buff Raziel

The gameplay, too. Darksiders 2 has a distinctly Soul Reaver-like feel to me, though lacking in SR's focus.
I feel the same! Man what I wouldn't give for another LoK game.
Dude... now that I think of it omg yes.
And Casey Jones
There's a small detail in Darksiders 1 that I love that many people probably missed and it "foreshadows" the whole theme of Death not being evil and actually probably being the nicest of the four horsemen, back when Ulthane gives you Mercy and War threatens him, Ulthane will say "Do I look like I'm afraid of death, boy?" and War replies with "It is not Death you should fear" referring to the fact that Death is the most merciful of the four and the one he should fear the least.
The aspect ratio changing between gameplay and cutscene , the cutscenes themselves being in-engine ,it's beautifull!
Oh dear Lemmy.
There goes my Saturday.
I'll just go make popcorn.

Dude, I have shit to do. Now I’m not doing it. 😑
Yep
Did you do it?
@@aureliodeprimus8018 Yeah, I've seen their videos. They've made some really good ones. Shame that they stopped.

Excellent critique and retrospect, man! I have such fond memories of this game, being one of the first that I played fully as a teenager. Enjoyed every bit of the video. You had me hooked the whole time from the excellent writing and production. Even got me cracking up a few times from your jokes. A 3 hour video on one of my favorite series ever? And I'm two years late? For shame
There are plenty of things I thought to comment about while watching this. The editing, the attention to detail, the humor, etc. Frankly I just, love how lovingly you dissect it. A proper analysis between all the ups and downs of this game, what made it fun, what made parts agonizingly dull, but ultimately why it was a pleasant experience.
(However the most immediate thing is your hilarious use of "Impossible" as a form of comedy...even going so far as to not even need to complete the joke at the end.)
All in all, well worth the 3 hours it took to view this.
Oops.

This was incredible. Never imagined I'd watch a RUclips video this long. But God damn I love this game, and you made an awesome tribute to it.
I've been thinking about doing another playthrough of this one, so I decided to watch your retrospective ahead of that.

Thanks for the share!
"This area revloves around. No seriously, this area revolves around" I loved that part of DS 2
Aside from the quality and insightfulness I find your videos oddly relaxing, keep up the good work :)
How have I never heard of the Darksider Franchise this looks dope as hell!!
It is both gameplay and lore
this has to be without a doubt one of the best h&s games ever made.. not to mention the brilliant music of jasper k yd! i will remember this game because of the music
I was 10 years old when I played this. I didn't knew English. I was fascinated tho. Rewatching this is giving me a lot nostalgia. I love the video btw
Thanks for your hard work man, amazing review!
I'm watching this with a friend and it's like I'm watching it again for the first time... It's a really good video for a very underrated game
Amazing video, you put tones of ahrd work in it and it shows. The ultimate love letter to Darksiders 2, just like it deserves
