- From the Obama fundraiser at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, CA, February 16, 2012.
I found the different angles here on RUclips and pieced them together. Many thanks to the RUclipsr's whose videos I used; including... concertkid2 (audio also), julissa321, srscanlan, matthewalb, yar1960, theShivaTV, and rishirich5.
What gets lost in this over time because it’s such a great performance is that he performed this just days after Whitney Houston died. That’s why you hear the instant acknowledgment from the crowd. There was no fan fare, no announcement of a tribute, just this heartfelt nod to another great singer. This gets me emotional every time.
I’m right there with you. Brilliant cover. So much heart and soul in this rendition.
That was Chris ❤
It's Not Lost and Forgotten.
I love that this performance is imperfect. It’s just a lovely person playing a song for another lovely person, living in a moment with disregard for scrutiny or reputation, heart and soul, devoid of commerce or ulterior motives. He was one of a kind 🤍
The same can be said about Norah Jones' performance of Black Hole Sun in Detroit. Both are beautiful renditions
I listened to this song the night Chris died. I cried like a baby for about 20 minutes.
Chris has meant a lot to my life. I have seen him live several times with his different bands.
The last time was last year for his acoustic show. I was wearing a soundgarden shirt, and he pointed me out in the audience and said cool t shirt!
I will cherish that tiny piece of personal interaction forever.
The voice of a generation.
Gone too soon.
Love from New Zealand.
hamdanz1 "Cool comment!"
Back for another watch RIP
he was and always will be the man. that voice will haunt me forever
There was something so innocent and gentle about him
hamdanz1 to m too.....💔💔
6 years already. 😢 No one sings like you anymore, Chris. Rest easy 💙
@pepperellie
I don’t know Marc Martel is doing good things😊
there will only be 1 person with his talent and that is him@@erikkibler3466
Apart from Eddie Vedder off course
Dude was so singularly good... nobody ever sang quite like him
To My boyfriend who passed away in March 2024, you’ll always be the 1 for me I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU 😢
For the love of all things holy. This guy could literally sing the damn dictionary and it would be nothing short of freaking amazing. Made my eyes leak.... God speed Chris...
💖
Never a more perfect accurate comment👍🏻
Absolutely 👍
😭💕 gosh…. He was amazing and left a huge mark and hole behind…
Damn boss,. I miss ya bro
Jesus Christ blessed this man with his gifts. All glory to God.
Yep 👍
Buddha this guy was unreal.
After pushing globalism it is fitting he would an hero (suicide) leaving his family to suffer in this dystopian nightmare.
Planet Clownfish Brain how would he be a hero leaving his family left fighting for alleged scraps in this dystopia? Wouldn’t the hero move be to stay and fight the good fight or take them with him? Don’t get me wrong, I will always love him. Yeah, listen...
I have a small ask. Can we say “is” ?
His music is infinite and he lives on through every beautiful second.
It takes a huge set of balls to even attempt this song, let alone rock the shit out of it!
Hack the fuck out of it!
HE COULDA SANG ANYTHING AND DID LITERALLY- HE COVERED EVERYBODY AND MADE IT HIS OWN
Word. You have to know you can nail it, I think Chris did sweet. R.i.p
This song was written by one of the most talented ladies in the business and Chris does a great job singing his version.
Nora Bellanger that would be Dolly Parton in the early 80’s which was covered by Whitney Houston 10 years later. But great song sang by both.
It’s always the covers that start with “ I just learned this” that completely light the stage on fire
I think it's because when a song is new to a person they sing it from their heart since they're not yet jaded to the emotion of the piece.
Man! He has a talent for creating on the spot. Wild vocals with anyone's lyrics including his own. One of his songs was whispered into a tape recorded when he was drunk after a party! Lmao.
The night before my husband died in a horrible car crash just minutes from home, I was listening to nothing compares to you. He asked if I had heard Chris’s version. He was a huge fan…I had not, he played it for me and we sang along quietly then went to bed. This video, others by Chris, interviews, all sorts of tid bits always to do with Chris continually pop into my life on a daily basis, tv, radio, in a store, just everywhere. I am positive they are signs from my love.
I hope each time you hear his voice it brings peace to your heart.
❤
ibu aku menangis
❤😂
touching
His voice gives me goosebumps and brings me to tears. Every. Single. Time.
When he comes out on stage singing with Linkin park then the crowd cheers the chills never fail
Me too. I love him, even tho I never met him...that's the beauty of his music 🎶.
Just can’t fathom life with Chris in this world, such a talent, Chester couldn’t handle life without him, hopefully they are make music together so we will once again be able to enjoy them once again when we all move on!!
Spot on....I usually get to the halfway point....tears start coming
You've just heard the best voice of rock music history.
clap
+Bill Connor maybe only freddie's was better, but not so Hot and warm like chris' one.
+Pietro Zanatta Yes, Freddie is still the best rock show man in live
But Cornell is a chameleon of music, he can sing pop, soul, rock, grunge, metal, very low notes really high notes, amazing vibrato, 4 octave vocal range, his voice breaths soul, so underrated imo
His covers are all exceptional, always at least as well as the original
Amazing, he's unique.
+Vlad A Well said I love Chris my favorite contemporary singer Freddy was an GOD though
+Pietro Zanatta Freddy is overrated. Robert Plant for me. but hey, it's only a matter of taste.
Nico and now he's gone 😭😭😭 o thought I was done crying yesterday but now I'm fucking sobbing
I'm gutted. A couple weeks ago I was breaking down from the weight of anxiety and depression. I found a playlist of Chris's music on Spotify. Listening to him helped me get through something very dark and dangerous. I hate depression. I hate that it steals the light from your life. Thank you, Chris. You saved my life.
I know someone who suffers from it too. I hope you're doing well. Even though I don't know you, believe that I care.
More of us get it than you may imagine. Depression is hell. I’ve fought it my entire life. Storm may weaken the tree but knots form where it was damaged and it gets stronger. You got it baby girl.
shelly_jellybean I’m struggling to type through the tears two years down the road and knowing all too well that it never gets easier when you lose someone you allowed into your heart but depression does lose its power to rob the beauty out of life if you hang in there and know you’re not alone and sometimes the difference is as easy as having a shoulder to cry on and someone who cares to talk to or sit silently with until the pain subsides.I pray that the worst is a distant memory for you as i type these words I know will be inadequate to one who is grasping and silly to one who aint
I'm a 43 year old man and I've been there. I know how you feel. Believe me.
How are you these days????
The man could sing anything. One of my generation's greatest voices gone too soon :-(
Jan McCray your generation and any generation. Chris and Freddie Mercury are IT for me...
THE GREATEST OF THE GENERATION
@@kennymcgonigle3026 I also miss Chester like a hole in my heart.
The voice of a God
Jan McCray the best voice
One of the most incredible, original, unique, creative, and tasteful musicians ive ever given an ear to. I would love to hear his version of every song ive ever loved. Rest in peace!
Stay with me Baby. Chris nails it.
Lucky bastards in the audience to be able to see Chris Cornell in such a raw intimate concert! He’s absolutely incredible I still love him to this day!!!❤
I love to listen to him. Depending on my mood, then I want to blast his music and my walls shake.
Why do theses brilliant and utterly sexy men have to die so fucking before their time.
ChrisT CornellT is the only…I’ve got nothing to say except for the one thing ….. big bad word spell it with four letters … damn did he have fucking words … I love his way of making music I love that he reads words and he hears music that makes him fucking sing …sing me a fucking song that I am going to be playing in my head for evermore…he gives the best song I have ever heard and he makes me feel so much love and beauty in every single way that I can feel it intimately with my heart, body and soul… I love how beautiful he makes me feel inside and out of my heart body and soul…I love the feeling of being in heaven with my heart body and soul..in heaven with the love of my life …. Saying hello with a smile on your way home ❤☮️🐸🫶♾️
Wish I could have a copy of my reply that turned into something that I think has potential for a future poem but I’m to lazy to copy my stuff so it’s not even going to know what it was that I wrote it down for. It’s just a muse that has been writing for me in my head since I met him my words are historical
Can you imagine being there in person?! I'm so thankful someone recorded this for the rest of us.
FUCKING MAGIC!! Im 46yrs old. I remember watching Dolly Sing this on TV when I was a kid sittin on the floor infront of a big wooden RCA Box. And I Cried.. 6? Maybe 7 yrs old? I fell in love with A Song,, A Voice,, And A moment in time!! Being a young boy I could "Never- Ever" let another Man know my true feelings about this song,? And all these yrs later, LOL? I have come to find out that I'm not the only Man!? And I Cried Again. And It was FUCKING WONDERFUL!!!!!!
Thank you Chris for the 5:08 of Escape and Return.
Dolly and Chris have rightfully inspired many tears. Cheers! :)
Me too, I'm 46 now. God I loved hearing her sing it. I cried too, still do. I don't think everyone should cover it, but man it's wonderful he did
The first time I saw "Best Little Whorehouse" and Dolly sings this at the end, I cried. I would rent the movie just to hear that song. When Witney did it and everybody raved, I said " she makes it soar, but DOLLY makes you cry". Listening to this version with Chris Cornell just breaks my heart, and I am crying again.
Never be ashamed to let your true feelings show about something. Anyone who calls you less of a man for something as simple as enjoying a song is simply insecure with themselves and trying to take you down to their level. Live life, love what you love, and love fully.
Flying Piranha, beautifully said. I have loved Chris Cornell for many years now. He has always been the most inspirational singer-songwriter for me and as many as countless others. I recently made a RUclips page pretty much dedicated to him. Even though I know my voice is not the best I uploaded these covers of his songs anyways cuz like you said if you love something just do it. please check out my RUclips channel @ Nemesis 23. I have tons of songs on various setlists, but check out my public uploads to hear/see me sing. I am open to all criticism both good and bad. Peace and Love Forever...
He just had a voice that would make everyone & anyone, no matter their taste in music, stop what they're doing & listen.
The greatest.
Truth right there
Truth.
Keen observation
He did. I just got done watching people react to grunge singer and people who never heard of him jaws dropped paused for a moment then asked"Who is he?"... These were great reactions from people who listened to straight hip hop music. The power of Chris's voice is beyond rock n roll.
Yes 💙
I almost cried the first time I watched this. He most likely performed this as a tribute to Whitney Houston after she passed, and now they’re both gone. Two incredible talents and people gone far too soon, I wish they were both still here, but I hope they’re at peace wherever they are.
Exceptional cover by an exceptional talent. RIP to both Whitney & Chris
I sit here today, 05/18/2018, and though my tears still flow like the rain outside my window, I thank you for all that you did to bring light into this world; especially mine. I will forever be changed by the gift that you were given, and that you so freely shared with me. Of the thousands of bands that make up the soundtrack of my life, you were certainly one of the most important artists to me. You will forever be in my heart and soul. I hope that you've found the peace that every true artist deserves. Dear sweet Chris, I will always love you!
Eric Cook 👐😇 Amen...it saddens me very much still til this very day....😔That he is no longer here but I kno he with THE OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN OVER LOOKING ALL OF US MAY HE RIP 👐😇

One of the best voices of all time. Rip Mr. Cornell
Chris,
I hope there is a heaven, and I hope you're there and at peace.
Thank you for your decades of music. You weren't just another singer, you were a story teller, a true vocalist and an inspiration.

@@popalijasvemoguci2540 God will forgive anyone if they just ask him. Well I'm not sure about pedophiles or murdering if that would be forgiven. The penalty will match the crime when they're judged💯
Only way to go to hell is not accepting Jesus as your lord and savior
I hope he's in heaven performing kick ass concerts along side Eddie Van Halen, Neil Peart and Malcolm Young!!
It's one hell of a performance dudes, one of the best vocalists in the history of rock. Love it a lot.
Rest in peace Chris. Thank you for all the joy your music has brought me over the years. We will always love you.
Hi Heather, hope you’re okay??
2022 and I still love this song. Still love this guy.
I’m watching this on the 5th anniversary of his passing, I will always love you Chris

This song always makes me cry thinking about my wife, also chris is the best rock singer ever!!!

I can't believe what an absolutely breathtaking rendition he did of this song. Thank G-d for RUclips!
I will always love you. Always. Chris Cornell RIP.
Oh my God❤. Beautiful voice❤❤My Crush ❤❤❤. I never got the chance to see him in person. I fell in love with his voice first then fell in love again when I saw him in pictures. I miss him dearly. When I'm sad I listen to this song and it gets to my heart with sadness but also joy because of the words in this song and the voice that sings it❤❤❤
Out of all of his covers, this one always breaks my heart in a way I can never quite put into words
This was a surprise for me. Didn't picture him doing this song but as always he knocked it out of the park. I will surely miss this creative genuis!

All I wanna do is listen to Chris Cornell covers
Me too
+Bill roberts nothing compares by Cornell is the best song ever!!
his U2+Metallica hybrid, ONE, is perfection
I've listened to that on repeat for months haha i can't stop
ONE is incredible, but when he covered Nothing Compares 2 U, I actually got shivers.
I don't know why but this...this just works. Stunning.
Still here 2022 keeping his songs alive one of the best artists of all time.
hes the only man who can chris cornell every damn song
Be still my broken heart. I fell asleep with headphones on and RUclips on auto play. This woke me out of a sound sleep and tears were falling like rain. RIP beautiful kind sir.
Only man that can sing this song, make it his own, and pull it off!
Simple Man I believe the first male to record this was John Doe from X
I would add George Michael to that list, posthumously, of course. They were very different musically, but both of them had voices that were finely tuned instruments that cut right into you like heart-seeking missiles. RIP Chris - no one sings like you anymore.
@Simple Man
Vince Gill does a beautiful rendition of this song himself.
And Vince also did this song as a duet with Dolly Parton, the country music legend who actually wrote this beautiful, heartbreaking ballad.
Both versions are worth checking out.
If this was indeed Chris's tribute to Whitney Houston, I'm so very glad he did NOT over sing the chorus the way Whitney did, almost murdering the song for me.
Subtle works so much better on this song and Whitney's version was the complete bombastic polar opposite of subtle.
Don’t mention that knob gobbler in the same breath as Chris
Vince Gill is amazing
My eyes will never recover... the tears just won't stop. We gen-x'ers are dropping so fast, it's scary. Chris could rock AND do opera, Freddie Mercury did. This is a guy punch. Hurts so bad. Say Hello 2 Heaven sweetheart, and much, MUCH love to your precious family 💔
I was at this show and it was one amazing song after another. Very few people can pull off playing solo and completely stripped down like this. And fewer still can do it this well. Very sorry that he is gone, but very glad that I got to see him perform. One of the great voices of all time.
It is 2020, and this song would always put me in tears.
yes i will Chris! unabashedly love you forever. Loved you since the 5th grade when i had sneak aways and listen to you against my religious family's wishes. you helped through the darkest times, i wish u had somebody to keep u in this world the way i did. RIP MY LOVE
Hi Vanessa, hope you’re okay??
His voice is so soothing, his best and most deep work was not only solo but with Audioslave, it's always the good ones taken way too early, RIP Chris for your voice and word's still impact people
Suffocatingly sad when I listen to this . Damn. Anyone else still driven to tears when you hear this beautiful man sing? Miss you C.C
Amazing...I love stumbling across something from this legend I haven’t heard him sing before...chills every time...miss this incredible talent, love you Chris
I have never heard a voice with as much passion as Chris Cornell's.
OMG...1st time I ever cried to this song. CC just rips my heart out.

This song means something now .whitney black tried it in a Kevin Klein movie , pretty weak
Hi Nicole, hope you’re okay??

It hurts my heart so much that you are not here with us . My son turned me onto you and your outrageous talent of touching people so damn deep in their souls they cry just from seeing a pic of you or hearing your angelic original voice. We are the same age not fair im here you are not. You will never be forgotten by so so many people that truly love you.❤
I can’t believe he’s been gone 3 years! Still heartbroken
I was literally just thinking this!
Soooooo sad so many greats gone way too soon.
Whether this life or the next... we will see him again.
He did this as a tribute because whitney had just died. now hes gone too. This sucks so much.
no doubt
No doubt
No doubt-.-
no doubt..
It's extremely tragic, and heart breaking. But it makes this so piercing. Gorgeous. At the same time, it's so heartbreaking. Its hard to listen to him sometimes because he has a way of compelling emotion. You can feel his raw anguish and quiet desperation in his music.. And to know how hopeless and tortured he was breaks my heart. There are countless others right now that feel that same isolated despair
I'm sure this was a tribute to Whitney Houston, this was done five days after she died. Cornell is awesome!!!
..... and now he is gone....RIP. so sad
kim mattliano Ikr...The greatest voices keep getting silenced in their 50s. Wtf???
Jason Heavner Taken out
Jason Heavner I prefer Dolly's over Whitney Houston's. I like Chris Cornell's but this isn't the best recording. All 3 are great.
agree-by FAR prefer the one 's version of who wrote this classic tune , Dolly, over Whitney's version. Chris does quite a good job on it as well.
First Class act Chris. You do everything so well and good on you for giving credit to those who help out. Cheers!
Its hard to believe that's its been three years since we lost him. He had such a beautiful voice and versatility. We will always love you Chris. Hopefully you've found an inner piece that life couldn't provide for you.
Hi Stephanie, hope you’re okay??
Damn, he totally owned this. He put so much feeling into it, made it sound like he meant every word.
He probably did mean every word.
Wherever he has gone, the music is free, and I miss him dearly. Thank you Chris
The last few years it's been tough....Musically we have lost some of the greats. Whitney, Bowie, Prince, Tom Petty, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Glenn Fry, George Michael, Al Jarreau and then to Lose Chester and Chris too...BB King in 2015, Lemmy and Scott Weiland. I mean damn...I'm sure I'm forgetting some more, sorry about that. Very sad we will not hear from these awesome artists again.
So Sad Gone 2 Soon. 4EVER Loved & Missed R.I.Paradise U Beautiful Souls !!
And now we've lost The Professor, Neil Peart...
And David Bowie...😢😢

My hero. So underrated While stile being considered being one the best rocksingers of all time. Songwriter, singer, guitarist, original artist and a very handsome man. He just had the it all.❤️
Been watching Chris Cornell covers and weeping. Just watched One and now this. You can feel his soul when he sings. What a torn, beautiful soul. RIP.
very well said, .. you can feel his soul...
I was looking for a tribute to Chris and found this. This is a gift.
Chills.
Eyes get watery listening to this.
Just found this. He was my angel on 1/8/2024. He came to stand beside me when I was put into a torture device in jail, and an hour into it, when I was losing consciousness, he told me to pray and that he would be with me until the corrections people let me free, and he was. I went into psychosis for a few months after, and he watched over me, but now I don't think I will be seeing him anymore. You are my angel, and I still have suicidal ideation, he has lessened it considerably. They need to do better in our institutions when dealing with mental health. It's infuriating how these "professionals" don't listen and do these inhumane things which only make things worse. Thank you Chris. Until we meet again. RIP
God that voice. What a talent and soul.
Thank you Chris for paying tribute to one of the best singers of all time. No one better than you to sing It. RIP Chris.
One special guy , with a voice for my generation. No one sings like you Chris / Whitney. Much love and respect 😥😘
Numerous amazing musicians have covered this since it's release in 74..And they've covered it beautifully...However none were able to capture the soul quite like the lovely woman who wrote it, Dolly Parton. Until now. ..I seriously just cried. I'm not even familiar with Chris Cornell and i'm not sure how i got here..but damn. I'm glad I did. Bravo dude. brah-fuckin-vo..*slow clap* I was in a totally breezy happy mood..and now my heart physically hurts. ....I'm going to have to listen to it again

Chris had an amazing voice and presence. just really starting getting into audioslave a year ago. wish I could have seen him in concert, especially in solo acoustic, he no doubt had a unique voice that was like no other. This video always comes back to me, reminding me of the power of music. I never expected a death to hit me as hard as Chris Cornell's has, even now, more than a year on, I watch this and it all comes back. Not ashamed to admit that last week I watched this and for reasons unknown I burst into tears as soon as the first chorus hit. I may have never met him, but I hope he knows how much he means to me, and that I miss him.

R.I.P Chris Cornell! Your absoulty angle voice will ALWAYS be missed! Soooo young to give up on life! You will be missed more than you were famous! I hope you found your peace! ❤
Hi there 🙋, hope you’re okay??
I will always love Chris' voice lyrics, smile.....can't figure why I am so emotional when it comes to him, we have had similar issues depression (90% of my life, and addiction brought on by just wanting to feel better, and getting hit by a car. After trying everything to change, and disappointing every one close to me, I couldn't bear to do it to them again. Now, most are dead. I am left with nothing but regret. I can't take it, and I am ready to go. This depression is eating me alive

he is so good, that you cant think of anything than to keep listening to him. Very powerful voice, so honest, emotional, so natural and effortless. only chris cornell could do that. The world, misses u. Rip
This is the performance that showed me the awesome power of Chris's voice in all its glory. I had only heard his voice and its praises in passing. It was this performance that blew me away and showcased the power and emotion he could convey.

Oh Chris.... You just broke my heart again
I'm so glad I was in my 20s during the 90s
Such a sad way to leave this world. I attempted suicide and was put on life support for four days and I was not expected to live. I was still in the hospital when my husband called and said he had passed. I fought similar battles with alcohol and depression. His pain is gone and he is free of fighting the demons that tortured him. Chris Rest In Peace and keep sharing your beautiful voice in Heaven.
Melissa Garza I can relate to ur story. I hope ur getting stronger by the day! Stay with us, ur worth it
