Thank you for your great review of one of my favorite lenses. I like the 18-135 lens because of its wide range of focal length, 18 is wide enough for group shots and 135 is a good distance zoom. It is also light in weight and easy to carry along for travel or street photography. Sharpness is good, not great, but with the use of Lightroom, sharpness and clarity could easily be enhanced. The Image Stabilization is very helpful for handheld shots and can compensate for the use of a slower shutter speed needed in dark surroundings or indoors. I have the first version of this lens and I paired it with my 50D. It was a great match and I hardly took it off this camera.

Bruce - Really enjoy the clarity of your videos! I have a Canon APS-C camera (M6 MkII) but I am an old Nikon 35mm film guy.
I have not yet achieved the satisfaction of sharpness in detail I had expected with my APS-C. I guess I'm looking for that Full Frame quality - out of something 2/3rds or 3/4ths the size. If I want to buy another lens to achieve that... what would You suggest?
Canon EF-S? Canon EF w/the adapter? EF-M -- Like the 55-200? (I already have the EF-M's: 32mm F/1.4, 18-150mm, 15-45mm & 22mm). Or maybe Sigma 24-105mm F/4? I know too many choices... but it sounds from your video... that is Not the EF-S lens (or therefore likely the EF-M's either). So that leaves the EF's with Adapter or the Sigma's???

I had the 2nd version of this lens in about 2013 & used it with my 60D.
It was a fun lens and great to learn on.
I had considered getting another apsc cam as a walk around but nowadays I'd have to go with one of the RF mount cameras like the R7 or R10.
I just picked up 2 solid lenses for my R5 & R6. The RF 70-200 2.8L to replace my beloved EF 70-200 2.8L IS III
And the RF 100 2.8L IS Macro to replace my Tamron 90 2.8 G2 Macro.

My Canon 80d came with this lens as part of the kit, but I would like to go with a prime lens, but I'm not sure which lens to go with. I already purchased a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, so now I was thinking about a Sigma 20mm or 24mm f/1.4 or the Canon 24mm f/1.4, what would you recommend? I did purchase a Canon ef 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, but after a trip to the aquarium it was hit or miss on getting good shots in low light, and the quality was definitely noticeable between the lenses. When I purchased my camera, I didn't want to spend a great deal at the time, but now I can actually invest in something better, I would say a good price range is $500 to $1500, but would like to stay towards the lower end of that spectrum as possible since this is just a hobby for me.

So the aperture range on a Canon
90D is f/3.5 - f/22 and then I put on a EF-S 18-135mm which is f/3.5 - f/5.6, does this mean that my cameras screen will stop at f/5.6 because of the lens instead of going to the cameras f/22?

Hi George, yes it can work fine for indoor photography, but it is not a "fast" lens in itself, so it is not ideal for low light photography, which you may encounter during indoor photo shoots. It really depends on how much natural light exist, if interior lights are bright, or if you're shooting with flash. Newer cameras shoot really good quality using high ISO camera settings too.

Really looking at wide angle indoor photos and videos, but with minimal distortion.

    • @BruceLovelace-Canon
      @BruceLovelace-Canon  3 года назад

You'll probably want a wide angle zoom that goes super wide and less zoom range to minimize distortion, such as the 10-18mm lens. The best quality would be had by using a prime lens.

Yes, although it depends on how may people and how much room you have. It's wide, but not SUPER wide on a "crop" camera.

There is no one best lens for taking pictures at night. It depends on your subject, but generally prime lenses with wide apertures (fast lenses) with f/2.0 or faster maximum aperture

Hi Bikramjeet, You can think of the S in the EF-S lenses as meaning "small" so the EF-S lenses, like the 18-135, only fit on the smaller "crop" APS-C sensors, not the full frame Canons. Here is a short video to help you understand: ruclips.net/video/VNte9AIUvQc/видео.html

Agreed George, it's definitely a good lens, not a great lens in terms of it's sharpness. I've found it more than sharp enough to shoot portraits for my clients and landscapes for my own purposes, but for the ultimate out of camera sharpness, the Canon L lenses are the sharpest.
