  • I was really surprised by this lens looking back at the test footage and photos taken with this Aps-c Lens. Was not expecting this quality from a Zoom. I just really missed having IS and wanted a general-purpose lens. Here are some test samples + footage of what this lens can do. Most shot at 2.5K RAW, others 1080 mode. The color reproduction is amazing and natural. I would definitely pair this lens with a Canon 50mm f1.8 STM, 40mm 2.8 Pancake or 35mm f/2.

    I've been binge watching all of your videos again. I had an EOS M ages ago and got rid of it, I now have another one turning up this week from eBay and will be starting my channel properly and really trying to get the most out of it! Keep these videos going man they are really really good!

      I have an active ebay search for an eos m myself. I have no idea why! I have an m50 that I like. Haha. I guess I just want to play around. For some reason I really want white (I know who cares?) and I really really don't want to spend over $150. Thanks to Zeek and DSLR Shooter the aftermarket on eos m went up nearly 100% 😭😂

    The 2.5k footage you shot looks amazing. I use this lens more than any other lens I own by far. It’s super sharp, has great contrast and has a super practical focal range .I just keep it at f5.6 and then it’s just like using a constant aperture lens. The IS is so good, you can shoot handheld at 135mm, which is insane.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад +5

      Thanks for sharing! Definitely sharp! It's a good pair with the Canon 50mm f1.8 STM or Canon 35mm f2 when you need low-light or depth of field support. Great lens for sure!

    Bought myself this lens for my Canon EOS 90D and I got to admit that my brother was not lying about the focus speed. It pretty much brings anything instantly in to focus where ever you point it at, close up or far FAR away.
    It's one real beast of a zoom lens. Impressive piece of Canon glass. Don't even want to take it off of my 90D anymore.

    I almost sold this lens to MPB or KEH because the aperture isn't fast enough for my taste, but decided to take it out for another spin before deciding since I hadn't used it enough time to feel like I gave it a fair chance. In my city downtown with the abundance of ambient light I got amazing street and low light shots, and the next day took it out in my neighborhood and got some really beautiful close-up images of bees pollinating wildflowers. All in all, the $112 KEH offered me for the lens is worth way less to me than the images I think I can get out of it. I'm keeping it as my one all-rounder among my fast aperture primes. It's underrated for sure, and well worth the price of admission.

    HI Zeek, Just discovered your awesome channel I have been binge watching all of your videos for past 48 hours, got 4 hours of sleep and have ordered an Eos M this morning and am ordering a speed booster and adapters for some lenses. I work in IT around Opensource projects and It's just so great to see a community built on this tiny camera. In my opinion you are a cornerstone to having new people join that community. Thanks for sharing so much of your knowledge. Just one question what bit rate do you get with 2.5k in 10 bits, are the SD cards able to absorb that raw bitrate correctly?

      Hey, cheers! Glad to hear you've aboarded the EOS M band-wagon :) 2.5K with 10 bit is around 74-85mb/s. Yeah the SD Cards are fine e.g. Sandisk Extreme PRO 64gb/128GB.

    This lens confused me...
    I have planned to buy this lens 2 years ago...but so many reviewers told this lens is not sharp enough and some said this is okey. But I have noticed in this video that this lens's bokeh effect is so nice and smooth and all over performance is eye catching. Thanks for this review...I shall grab this lens in near future without any confusion...👍🏽

      This one and the previous version which I have also used are amazing. TOO sharp actually and I'm using a 1080p camera here...but they really have that nice canon colour which I think looks nostalgic and somewhat cinematic. I will continue to use and keep this lens. Definitely worth it! 😎👍

    Thank you. I immediately traded my 10-55 mm kit lens for this one, then started getting so much lens envy for wider apertures and higher classes (ahem- Sigma Art series) that I started to feel dissatisfied with this one and quit shooting with it. Instead of dropping thousands on upgrades I want to master the equipment I have. The bokeh shots in your video really helped. I just need to master the other ways to get those instead of splurging on 1.4 and 1.2 lenses. My only gripe is that I love nighttime photography and I don't know how to do that with this lens.

    • @faraskan
      @faraskan 3 месяца назад

      One year late, sorry in advance. Bokeh is really a topic where you can lose yourself in. If you shoot on crop cameras/APS-C (for which this lens is made for), you will never achieve the crazy Bokeh that full frame cameras + prime lenses achieve. but hey - those are at least triple the price.
      You really get what you pay for.
      If you really aim for that very super shallow Depth of Field + the sweetest Bokeh, you will need to invest a lot, unfortunately.
      Regarding night time photography:
      Even with prime lesens (F1.4 etc) you would do well to use a tripod. There is no point in avoiding a tripod because you think "hey, i have this super low-light prime lens now, now i can shoot everything free-hand".
      For best image results, you always wanna stop down the aperture and dont shoot wide open. So even with a prime lens... if you want to shoot a dark alley, you would stop down to lets say F2.8 - or more.
      Long story short:
      This lens is an allrounder. It wont be the best at ANYTHING. If you want that extra high-end result, you gotta get that specific lens for that job.
      But you dont wanna carry like 3-5 lenses with you on a trip, dont you?
      This lens is for traveling light.

      Zeek totally agree! I said on the Facebook group a while back that I was investing in these kit STM’s as they’re cheap and very handy with eos-m.
      Problem is I have 10-18, 18-55 and 55-250 STM’s. To add this lens would be crazy but the focal length is ideal 😩 why did I you do this to me lol

    I've been using this wonderful lens for over four years now and because of its versatility it's still one of my favorite lenses. I own the STM version which is glass-wise the same. Love the footage Zeek! Did you use the 'standard' 2.5K preset? Nice! And how many seconds were you able to record? And btw, I also own the cheap, but great vallue for money, Sigma 17-50 F2.8 wich is also fantastic on the EOS-M. The only downside is that both lenses are not suitable to work with the .71 focal reducers because of heavy vignetting. You can't have it all.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад

      Thanks for sharing! :) I have had the STM version before and honestly think optically, they're pretty identical. I did use the 2.5K preset 16:9, which I could record for about 6 seconds. When I wanted a bit longer I would just reduce the resolution a little. The farm scene for the portraits where shot 1736x976 RAW 14-bit lossless 16:9 as well as the majority of the farm scenes, whereas the rest are 2.5K Raw. If I can get the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 cheap, I might consider it. Thanks!

      No problem! I haven't used it. But from reading about it, it is optically the same as the 18-135mm STM IS but with no IS switch as that will have to be adjusted in camera. I'd personally get whichever is cheaper alongside a prime lens. 😎👍

    thanks for the video. I'm looking at this lens to sit on a c100 for any dolly or steadycam shots i need for narrative film. Everyone talks about about the noise of USM lens and how STM was made for video, (smoother rack focus). I am hoping to use this lens with Dual pixel AF, not only to follow an actor but also to rack focus between two subjects . What are you thoughts? Should i get the STM instead? thx and keep the videos coming.

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад

      I have owned both the STM and obviously the Nano. When you have Dual Pixel AF, the difference is going to be very minor between the two. Optically the same lens, love the colours. Any choice will be a good choice. The Nano USM thought to mention can be used with a zoom modular (PZ Zoom Function) but thats a seperate unit and costs extra. I think you'll be fine either way, no noise on either!

    Hi Zeek, I have an EOS M (first generation) and i''m considering buying an autofocus lens, aside to my vintage lenses. By what you are saying in this clip, video on EOS M function is not really doing it. What is happening there, that it doesnt do it? Thanks, Zeek! Awesome video, as always. Would it be such a bad idea to ask for your opinion? You see, I use Canon EFs 55-250mm and 18-55mm lenses and thought about buying 10-18mm. So I can have wide angle shots and finally sell 18-55mm because I'm dissatisfied with the image quality, compared to 55-250mm. Also, I planned to hack 10-18mm and 55-250mm as you did in your videos and use them with the Viltrox speedbooster (I use a regular EFs to EOS M adapter now). I planned to use them primarily for travel. But after seeing your videos about 18-135mm, I'm in doubt. Because traveling with just one lens is more convenient. And if 18-135mm produces same image quality as 55-250mm, then it's a no brainer. My question is... What setup would you choose for travel videos: 10-18mm + 55-250mm VS 18-135mm only VS 10-18mm + 18-135mm? Or something else completely?

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад

      Hey! I have just purchased EF-m lenses e.g. the 11-22mm EF-m Lens & 55-200mm, so I hope to compare these with the EF-s lenses soon.
      What mode do you use? I think that's important too. If 2.5K/2.8K and other crop modes, than the 10-18mm is very nice. The 55-250mm won't be used as much with those modes, although it is still a great lens. The canon 11-22mm from brief use looks very nice along with the EF-m 22mm or 55-200mm lenses. But all these are great, just depends what mode, and what focal length you can image yourself needing the most.

    I always thought this lens was over priced, and I still think it is. But I did buy it when I found it as a “special weekend offer” at half the price. I really don’t think it’s all that sharp - certainly not compared to my Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art which has an absolutely jaw dropping image quality, especially in low light. And my wonderful Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS STM is certainly sharper too (although not as sharp as the Sigma). Still, I find myself using the 18-135 USM more often than I’d have thought, because it really isn’t bad. The size and weight is unpleasant compared to the 18-55, though, but the versatility of the 18-135 is just great.

      I love the 55-250 too, still have it after a few years. Though my copy is about the same quality wise as this 18-135, which would also be optically the same as the STM 18-135mm. I sold the Sigma 18-35mm for a Canon 17-55 IS and haven't looked back since.

      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад

      Cheers Ryley. I'd recommend the old STM version for the original M as it doesn't have good AF, so there wasn't a noticeable difference for video. For the M50, it has DPAF obviously so either the STM or the Nano will work really quick in AF. I have an M50 and the AF is really good with the Nano USM. I'm sure it would also work well with the Older STM which sells for cheap. Reviews say they're optically the same, so...

    well, I think after using this lens for a long time and also looking at your video, the lens is darker than its real aperture says. I mean if you shoot at f3.5 you get a T-stop of about f4.0. it works best at f5.6 and that is dark for shots in dim lighting conditions like in most rooms at events which means u have to up your ISO and use slow shutter speeds to get decent images. the autofocus is good for both video and stills. Its images are a bit dull and one has to do a lot more in post-processing to brighten the images up be it photo or video. in your case it works best on the EOS-M because is a mirrorless camera, it is not too good on the 80D, it is ok on the canon 7Dmark2 its OK. I don't have a 90D to test on it. I have two copies of the lens, I bought them the same time for my 80D and 7Dmark2 mainly for event video shoots. I have since switched to Fuji XT3. So the shocking you are talking about. hmmmmm,

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад

      No no such thing as it works best on the EOS M, ive used the 80D and 70D, the images come out the same. I had some good weather when I tested it, and for a kit zoom, I wasn't expecting it to take amazing portraits shown in this video as well as organic video quality. The lens is amazing and it's eventually up to the user to being it to it's full potential 😎☝️🎥

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  2 года назад +1

      Nano USM is quick, silent motor, so no AF noise.
      STM is just smooth focus. It will have AF sound, can't remember how loud it was from memory, but I don't remember it being an issue. Both have 4 stops of IS, and optically the same.

    • @Techo1329

      Having used both on Rebel and 80D, USM gives amazingly reliable super fast AF and no noise. The STM is still good, just not as fast with a little bit of noise. The only time the STM would frustrate you is if doing video with the onboard mic, where you may get some zoom noise in the audio.

Was really impressed and after a lot of consideration I just ordered it used from MPB with excellent quality rating for about €260 (a bit pricy, reading the comments.. but then again everything is much cheaper in the US). Looking forward to using it. Have the newer 50 mm 1.8, a 18-55 kit lens and a Sigma DG 70 mm already, but was now looking for more telephoto. It was between this, the 50 mm 1.4 and the older 70-300 IS USM. No. Not worth the hassle. Better to use a smartphone if recording internal H.264.

      Thanks Wilson! 👍No it isn't parfocal. But it can be linked with this power zoom module:

      @@ZeekEOSZ interesting and expensive module, though. 😊 Sometimes is nice to have the possibility of zoom pulling.

      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад

      Yeah it is expensive, unless you find one used for a real good price. I don't see it as highly necessary anyway...

    Zeek, this guy has an Atx pro Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 lens for 100.00 . Will this work well with a speedbooster on the EOS M or would it work better with a regular adapter in your opinion?

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад +1

      It won't work with the speedbooster until set to 16mm. I would use a regular adapter. If you were using 2.5K mode then yes it would work with a speedbooster, but only in that mode or X3 Crop Mode (1736x976) resolution.

    Can this lens be used on a viltrox speedbooster? Heard that efs lens dont work on some speedboosters?

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  4 года назад +1

      It can possibly be modified from ef-s to EF Mount, but I don't think it's worth the effort unless you got the lens super duper cheap :)

    Can you compare 18-135 stm and nano usm. Please!

    • @ZeekEOSZ
      @ZeekEOSZ  3 года назад

      I only have the nano USM, I had the STM 2 years ago. If I lost the Nano I would buy the STM again. Optically the same, just different exterior and AF performance although the STM is still quite good.

      24-105/24-70 L F/4 or 2.8
      Sigma Art are also good but can feel quite bulky.
