Thank you for a most informative and balanced review. A pleasure to listen to someone who knows what they're talking about and supplies plenty of info but without confusing comparative DSLR newcomers such as myself. I have an SL2 together with Canon's 24mm f2.8 pancake and the rather wonderful 50mm f1.8, but I have been looking for a good general purpose zoom for walking/travel purposes. I'm shopping for a DSLR for my daughter. I have been very confused by the three different 18-135mm EF-S lenses. Finally, I get it!... Thank you for the explanation! Great review!!!
I love this lens! I must have 15 Canon lenses and this is my third 18-135 which I bought only to be able to use the power zoom attachment (which works great!). I have nearly 800 videos of musical performances up on YT and at least half were shot with this lens. It is a great all-in-one lens! It works perfectly on my 70D, 80D and C100. Love it!
Is this a great lens to take pictures at night with and can i buy this for my 80d and go from there i need a great lens cause this lens is cheap i saw this for 199 so please help me out
EXCELLENT REVIEW!!!! Absolutely, understandable, comprehensible and eloquent. Truly helped with my decision toward purchasing this lens, mainly for video use in this very near future.
I just bought this lens - I got the heck of a bargain on it! And I bought a JJC lens hood for it, and this is the first third party hood that seems to be every bit as good as my original Canon hoods: perfect fit and finish. But I was really surprised how big and heavy this lens is! I also bought the PZ-E1 power zoom unit, and there's a bluetooth remote and a memory card on the way as well: The Canon BR-E1 and a Lexar Professional 1667x 256GB SDXC UHS-II - I hope it's compatible with the Eos 90D that should be arriving at my door in about a week!
Great review, Dustin :) I recently purchased the 80D kit with this lens. Here in Norway, the price of the lens is around 2/3 to 3/4 of the full price when bought this way. I have a 6D with a nice set of pro lenses and I actually wanted the 80D just for its video capabilities. Thus I will never come to expect the fantastic quality that I get with my 6D and, say, the Canon 135mm f/2L. But the auto focus... WOW! Amazingly fast! It is so darn impressive. And quiet. And so is the IS! The 80D + this lens + the 10-18 STM now together make up my new killer video combo. I haven't bought the slot-on zoom appliance yet, and don't know if I will (I'm a bit disappointed that the zoom lever seems to be fixed to one of two speeds, instead of being variable like many old camcorders are). Once again thanks for an interesting video. Please keep up your great work.
So you said i need to get the 10-18 for shooting video can i also use them for taking wide angle pictures as well. Well my 80d never came with the 18-135 but i want to buy a great lens for my 80d cause I'm not going to buy no full frame camera just yet I'm going to wait until the price drops lol
Best review of difference in STM & nano USM . Thanks for pointing out very very fast AF. Got this with kit. You do the best reviews that are understandable & useful .
Thank you for explaining the difference in STM and USM. I just received my new lens with a new Canon D80. Lookin forward to using my camera. I really enjoy your video.
your detailed reviews are very helpful and just nothing but professional, it is a joy to listen to you even if one already owns a product ! thank you so much, no need to say keep it up. perfect; perfection.

Thanks Dustin ! Very nice review. I bought it in a Kit along with 80D about six months back. Could use it few times before lockdown. Looking forward to use it many more times post lockdown. Your review gives me a hope that I can use it for clicking good photographs ! Thanks again !
Kit lenses sure have transformed from bad to pretty darn good! Lovely review as always (we all know the high level of quality in these videos by now) and I will recommend this video to anyone who's starting out today!
Today Jan 9 2024 and I'm receiving my third Canon 18-135 USM lens from Adorama to have it permanently attached on one of my olds ASP-C Canon cameras before this lens is discontinued. This is a nice walk around very versatil and sharp lens for Canon DSL-R
Great review as always, Dustin. Interesting that "toward the camera" AF is improved with this lens...the recent DPReview review claimed the 80D wasn't doing such a good job in that case.
I would say Nano USM is better for both (it’s essentially STM on steroids). Ring-type USM is my preference for manual focus over the focus-by-wire systems, but if you are comparing Nano-USM vs STM, I prefer Nano.
I have the previous generation of the 18-135 that came with the 70D. For a long time the lens was good enough for me as a general walk around lens. I think the general consumer who will buy the new 18-135 nano usm lens will love it when they buy it as a kit. The only thing that worries me is the price of the lens on its own. I know that good glass costs more but still.
+Danny I agree, but I do expect that the price will drop over time. I suspect the new technology is probably more expensive to produce (at least initially). Nano USM is very impressive, though.
+Dustin Abbott Price dropped finally to $1599 for Canon 80D with kit 18-135mm IS nano USM lens. I also got a price match saving $200 (Purchased for $1799).
Your reviews are really awesome sir! I'm about to buy a 77D with these lens, but I didn't know much about nano USM. Now i understand everything! 😃 I will recommend this video for everyone who are thinking about buying these lens, but not confident 100%. You have a new subscriber! Thanks again! 👍
Hello, V vlogs, Im still amazed by the whole kit, choosing this one rather than the smaller kit, was worth it. I just got home from shooting some pictures of the sky, and even doing that with this, is pretty simple, and good.
Is this a good general purpose lens for someone just starting out in photography or would you recommend the STM version. Will probably do some family videos but more interested in photos. Thanks for your great reviews.
Took this to Europe for aircraft museum shooting. Need the 18mm to capture the aircraft wings. Easy to carry all day. Like the zoom to capture the cockpits quickly.
Hi there Dustin! Great review. Thanks for putting out the video in detail. I am considering buying a New Canon 80D. Do you recommend me to get this 18-135mm USM lens or the Tamron 18-200mm you were talking about ? Or is there any other lens that you would recommend checking out ? Looking for an allround package (image quality + video autofocus performance). $600 would be my budget for lenses. Please HELP me decide !
If video autofocus is a priority, then I would probably go with this lens as its fantastic in that regard. I do think that kit prices have dropped, so you can get a better value on this lens now when buying it in kit.
With this lens what's is the gain with a cannon 10-18mm f:4.5-5.6? I'm wonder since de the 18-135 is 18mm at f/3.5 how gain it retrieves from10mm at f/4.5.
Thank you so much! I do music festivals alot. Was considering buying an all around lens and hate switching back and forth to 15-55m f/4 then to a 55 - 75m f/4 then to a telephoto 75-300m and try to stay steady then to a low light lens. Seems like this lens has a great basic coverage of what i need from wide to prostrate. Its f/3.5 can really help taking photos later in the day. The pricing is a fair. I'm awsome review! Thank you very much
Graet video! Please help me. Which one am I to get for my brand new 80d? the 18-135mm, or 50 mm1/8? It would be used for model photography, body and portrait too,
Hey Dustin! I'm new to your channel and I gotta say that your reviews are by far one of the best I've seen! I was wondering, I'm about to get a new 80d myself and I am having trouble with deciding which lens I should get. My choices are the Tamron 18-200mm Di II and the one above. I have seen the review you posted on the Tamron, but I am still having difficulty choosing. I am a learning photographer, so what do you think is the best option? Also, do u mind pointing out the pros and cons of each? Many thanks! Josh.
Joshua, I don't have time to give a big breakdown outside of my reviews, but you may want to start with the Tamron if you are beginner for the simple reason that it costs a lot less.
Thanks a lot Dustin, i was looking for such a in depth review on this lens, as I am going to use it after 18-135 IS STM with my Canon 80D. I was little bit confused regarding the performance and at the same time I am also liking this for its surface finishing and the overall design. Would you please tell me between STM and Nano USM which one is better for video in terms of lens noise and servo focusing. Thanks again.
What else are you going to do with the lens? If you are just buying for portraits, then buy the 50mm. If you are going to do a lot of general purpose work and want the flexibility of the zoom range and just occasionally doing portraits, buy the zoom
@@DustinAbbottTWI Dustin Abbott can't decide between canon ef-s 24mm f/2.8 and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. Which one would you choose by considering the fact that I'm going to be using on a crop sensor?
Great review as always :) I would like to know your suggestions on Canon 15-85 lens compared to this one? The 15-85 is quite older and yet more expensive, but I learned from several reviews that image quality that it creates is much better. Which one would you choose for a canon 70 camera? Thanks and looking forward for your future reviews
Thanks for all the videos Dustin. God bless! A quick question - I have an option to keep either the canon 18-135 mm USM or the Tamron 18-200mm DI VCii. (and sell the other one). I use canon 200d Markii. What is your recommendation? Thanks in advance for your help! (And sorry I have posted this question on the other video as well)
Nice review for this lens. I am looking at buying a Canon 77D with this kit lens included. Since the 77D is a smaller and lighter body than the 80D, will this lens be balanced well and not too heavy for the 77D. I was originally going to get the 18-55 STM kit lens and then add the 55-250 STM later but the 77D with 18-55 kit lens is no longer an option. Thank you.
Good review dustin I want to ask you how fast of the autofocus on eos M3 ? Is it same as native ef-m lenses ? Also how good of IQ compared to tamron 18-200 for eos m mount ?
+smart games The focus is very fast, and I would say as fast as native mount lenses. I haven't directly compared those lenses, but I would say the IQ is probably pretty close.
Fantastic review. Quick question - have you tested/owned the 10-18mm STM from Canon? If so, when it comes to overall sharpness, is there a difference? Thanks!!
Ok, Thanks! I own the 10-18mm STM and it is sharp, just I am finding the zoom range to be a little restricting for me. I mainly shoot FF, but use the 80D for video, and I think the 18-135 would be more practical for me, so I might sell it and get an 18-135mm to be my go to lens for the 80D. In my position, do you think that'd be a smart idea? I love the 10-18mm, but it's just a little bit wide for me actually.
James Larsen It doesn't matter how sharp a lens might be if it isn't a useful focal length for you. It's not just about owning the best option; it's about owning the right option for your shooting style.
Thanks a lot for this one! Helped me a lot about this Nano USM. I was really upset cause I thought the kit that comes with D80 was the old school USM...
Scary price but then no one ever claimed Canon was a value brand. There is one up for sale locally with peculiar damage to one of the hood mounting lugs - the plastic hasn't shattered so much as crumbled. I have also seen plenty of Canon lenses with damage to the plastic mount. If you get hold of an old Minolta plastic fantastic from the '90s and attack the thing you will have to work hard to destroy it because the plastic they used was almost certainly polycarbonate. Not so with Canon. Treat your Canon consumer level gear very gently would be my advice. Thank you very much for the comprehensive review and a great deal of useful info!
Just ordered the Canon 80D with the 18-135mm Kit lens. Very tempted by the new Power Zoom attachment as well, but £129 does seem a little steep for the attachment that can only be used on this single lens. Do you know of any good Power Zoom alternatives that have hit the market for this lens?
I'm not even sure that many of the Power Zooms are really on the market. I do think it will be compatible with more lenses in the future, but you might want to just wait and see how things unfold.
IS. I understand IS to a point. If holding in hand, zoomed to 200+mm at shutter speed 1/250, should IS be turned off. I'm thinking about tripod applications where IS is off to keep the camera from doing that is movement when it is not needed. However, I am not certain that my hands can hold the camera very still all the time when zoomed to its max focal length, even at the faster shutter speeds (1/125-1/250), especially on hikes.
Excellent review ! Perfect & precise ! To sum it up, its not a great lens, when I bought the 80D, I opted for this, because, that time, I didn't know much about this, and moreover didn't have many choices apart from the 18-55. Now, I feel, I've made a mistake falling for the package, ie, buying a camera with a kit lens. Now, the only option is, use this as much as possible, rough it up & move forward. BTW, thanks for this review
I am buying the 77D canon. I have 2 deal. The first one is with the usm nano 18-135 lens and the other is with the previous generation 18-135 stm kit lens. The previous kit is 220 $ cheaper . Which one should i go for is thr usm nano worth thr extra 220 $ ?
Your detailed reviews helped me to buy two lenses for my Canon 200 Dii body, 1) canon ef 35mm f/2 IS usm & 2) canon ef 100mm f2.8L IS usm macro and using these. Now I wish to buy Canon 90D body. Will you please advice me which lens i can buy with 90D, either canon ef-s 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens or canon ef-s 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS nano usm, waiting for your advice. Thanks for the detailed review.
Very good video. I am new at this and some people has recomended the Tamron G2 but can you tell me how is the performance of the lens indoor using artificial light for All-Star Cheer on stage shooting action shots at about 15 ft away ? Thanks
+Leonardo I Candelario Jr The focus seems pretty confident in most all lighting conditions. Be sure to calibrate the lens to your body if you have that option to get the most consistent results.
How does this lens perform in low light situations? We are currently shooting with our stock lenses and I did watch a review on it for low light situations but just want to make sure. We shoot a lot of weddings and our outdoor and daylight situations are always so crisp but indoor in mood lighting and low light situations it seems to suffer in quality and the footage is very grainy. I prefer to work with a zoom lense as it presents itself useful most of day and so I don't really have to get to close to my subjects by getting in the way. Thanks in advance :)
If you do a lot of wedding shooting, then you need to invest in a wide aperture lens, not a variable aperture slow zoom like this that doesn't let in much light. This isn't a lens designed for weddings.
I've got the original Sigma 18-200 stabilised lens and I'm very unhappy with the image quality. It seems incapable of producing sharp images. Do you think this lens is a good replacement as a walkabout lens?
How do you compare the Canon 18-55mm STM vs the Canon 18-135mm Nano USM? I have the 18-55mm STM that came with my Canon T7i and wanted to get a more overall walkabout lens making it less gear to carry on vacation. I have some prime lenses and a wide angle lens, but ran into issues with zoom length when events occur and I had the 18-55mm STM on the camera. Is image quality as good or better? I understand the zoom is remarkably better on the 18-135mm Nano USM.
As a rule of thumb, it is very, very rare that a lens with a larger zoom range has better image quality. There are that many more compromises involved to make it work.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I had a friend recommend the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 Contemporary DC Macro OS HSM or Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 instead of this lens. I have been watching reviews and they do not seem to have good build quality. Would you get this 18-135mm nano usm or one of the Sigma's?
Hi I am planning to buy an 80D with 18-135 USM. But I would like to add a telephoto lens as well. Is it worth buying 55-250 STM lens with above mentioned 18-135?? Or please suggest any other budget telephoto lense? thanks Bibin
That depends. If you expect a huge image quality increase, then the answer is no (its a bit better), but everything else about the lens is vastly improved - particularly the focus!
The 24-70mm f/2.8 variants are typically good, though larger and expensive. If you preference is having a larger zoom range, this is probably the way to go for an 80D.
I wonder how the optics compares to the ef 28-135 f3.5-5.6 is usm lens. Mine now has a lens band installed for the lens creep. I have not tried it on my 80D. Maybe I should.
I am thinking of buying canon 80d but little bit confuse about lens. Can you please suggest one lens which will be suitable for photo and video. i will be thankful.
Great Review! You need to review the new Canon EF 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 IS II USM. This Lens also has the Nano USM. I have this Lens and it's Sharper than the v1 and Tamron's 70-300 Di VC and it's awesome to say the least!
im about to buy the canon 80D , what is the difference beweent the STM version and the Nano USM because this one is almost 200-300 more than the STM is it worth getting it ? thanks
Optically not much, but the new lens has incredible autofocus that is far better than STM. It has better build, a special IS that is great for video, and is compatible with the powerzoom accessory.
Anyone who isn't into the Video Crowd can still use the older 18-135 STM, which the exactly *same* optically MTF, its way cheaper, too. And STM Stepper Motor is quite good enough for Video Work, too. Not everybody needs the new NanoUSM HighSpeed AF Motor Drive, and i am quite much more concered with this lens, especially from CAs, check out the DPReview Samples - it's partially really a mess with these high chromatic abberations - something i've never seen with any of my lenses.
+Marc P. I agree that the image quality is not really improved, but the mechanical operation is the big deal with this lens. I don't know that I would recommend someone with the STM sell it to buy this one, but I certainly do think the autofocus performance merits spending a bit more to get this lens. The older lens is only "way cheaper" when gotten either on sale or in a kit with a camera body - the actual price is only $50 less.
Dustin Abbott Hi Dustin, well, if you think at last here into germany one can get the "old" (2013) 18-135 STM into mint condition for around ~200 EUR, but the suggested price for the "new" 18-135 NanoUSM is 599$, or 470 EUR at the cheapest seller currently into germany, and the older STM Version is currently 285 EUR as for today - we're talking here by no means for just 50 bucks difference, but almost 200 EUR, which is a lot, considering Canon doesn't have had upgraded the Optics into the 18-135 NanoUSM. So, yes...one get very fast AF Speed with this new 18-135 Iteration, but in terms of Optics, it's quite disappointing, compared to it's older STM-Brother in Law. I understand that you as Mr. Brian Smith are promoting that new NanoUSM Lens here - no offence or -bad meant, Brian. Canon slowly shows new Innovations - for instance, the 550D 18 APS-C Sensor, it does have been used now to date into more than 12-13 DSLR & Mirrorless Canon Camera, also into 7D I, and still, into the EOS M, or 1300D Entry Level DSLR...like the 1200D before, and so on, and on...the product street into the fab is long time ago being written off, and Canon possibly did Millions of this now old Sensor Design - DR is way behind Sony, Nikon, Pentax...but that doesn't stop Canon from using it into their latest 1300D, for example. It's just old whine into new bottles, and so it is also been here the case with the new NanoUSM 18-135....AF Drive updated, motorized PowerZoom AddOn avialable - but besides this....still recycled, old Tech (same Optics & IQ, and lots of CAs here, too) Even one Guy from the DPReview Stuff wrote into the Comments Section (Dan xxxx, last name forgotten) that he isn't impressed with this Lens, just to be honest, that isn't a great lens, for the Price, Canon asks. When it does come cheap as "Kitlens" AddOn for the 80D, it might be alright - but not as Aftermarket Retail Product / Price to Performance Ratio. Nothing bad meant, Dustin. Just for instance (i know this 18-135 NanoUSM is APS-C, the 24-105 STM is FF) the latter one is close in IQ to the 24-105/4L USM, whileas as Retail Aftermarket product at least 100 Bucks cheaper then the newer 18-135 NanoUSM, and the better deal for my Taste. (for FF Users) Just my thought of view. regards, Marc
+Marc P. No problem, Marc. I'm going by the US retail prices. There is always variances in prices from region to region, and you can always get older lenses for less than their MSRP. My review makes it clear that I'm disappointed the optics aren't more improved, too, but I do think the new focus system is a huge leap forward.
question: is an ND variable filter worth for the 18-135 usm nano on outdoor 12.00 shooting? or could just compensate by zooming and going f. 4 - 11 ??? Thanks Dustin :-)
Dustin Abbott I'll let you know after more testing and stressing out the lens.... was thinking on getting an ND for the canon 50mm f/1.8 stm.... I guess that is the case where you can't do much with loads of light and blurred backgrounds at 1/50 100 ISO 24fps... thanks!
+trevorpinnocky I agree, though there is probably a practical limit to how good the optics can be in a lens with a 7.5x zoom range. I think it could have been better, though.
+Dustin Abbott If your appliance is mainly video in 1080p then the optics are more than fine. This lens together with the 80D makes up a killer high-quality camcorder combo. For those mainly in need of an all-round DSLR lens with which to capture photos I agree, however.
I recently bought a canon 80D and I bought a 18-135mm IS STM along with it, instead of buying the kit... My question is: Is nano USM better than STM? ... I bought the STM because I wanted to make videos as well
I can't really comment as I haven't reviewed that lens - though it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. The Sigma is the sharper lens, but it's also much larger and heavier and not as good a focal length on APS-C
Thank you for your answer and your time. I am looking for a lens that is sharper than the EF-S 18-135 IS Nano USM as I have been disappointed in it's sharpness. What about the Canon 24 -105? The focal length is not an issue for me as I have the Canon EF-S 10 -18mm.
iim currently using canon powershot sx 60hs for my wildlife and birding and im currently looking to upgrade to 80d ..i dont know the comparison of shooting long distance birding between bmy bridge cam and this lens
I scanned your shirt, and it took me straight to the Amazon link.

Great review as always, Dustin. Interesting that "toward the camera" AF is improved with this lens...the recent DPReview review claimed the 80D wasn't doing such a good job in that case.
+Anthony Martin I don't know where they got that. I've been very impressed with the tracking of the 80D.
Excellent review, just bought that lens will be trying it on anytime
Enjoy!
Have you tried it on yet? How do you look in it - does it suit you?
Hello Dustin which is better for Photography & Videos, USM OR STM?
I would say Nano USM is better for both (it’s essentially STM on steroids). Ring-type USM is my preference for manual focus over the focus-by-wire systems, but if you are comparing Nano-USM vs STM, I prefer Nano.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you very much
Fantastic Review as always Mr. Dustin, Eagerly waiting for that Tamron 85mm vc lens Review!
Keep up the good work man :)
Definitely one of the best review channels out there...
Wow, thanks!

That's good to hear!
Glad to have you on board!
I'm about to buy 77d with these lens, how is your experience till now ?
Hello, V vlogs,
Im still amazed by the whole kit, choosing this one rather than the smaller kit, was worth it. I just got home from shooting some pictures of the sky, and even doing that with this, is pretty simple, and good.
Great review! Always checking your videos 👍🏻
+parule That's what I want to hear!!
I'm glad it is working well for you.
I do think that kit prices have dropped, so you can get a better value on this lens now when buying it in kit.
of course the 18-200 mm
If you are into video, buy only USM, STM or Nano USM lens.
Thank you very much
Glad to help out.
Which one would you choose 18-135 kit lens or the 55-250 f4-5. 6 ?
That’s two lenses with very different purposes. Do you have something to cover the wide end if you purchase the 55-250?
Dustin thank you for your review. How is the quality of the zoom ring? Is it smooth?
It is. The mechanics of the lens are quite nice.
That power zoom attachment reminds me of Canon EF35-80mm f/4-5.6 PZ Power Zoom during the film era. Sweet..
Yep. Now we'll see how many people will actually buy it and use it.
Nice review, thank you! Any clues on if it will focus just as well on the SL2?
I don't see why not. The SL2 won't have as many focus points, but I think the focus system will be fine.
Dustin Abbott Thanks! Will go with this usm and the 10-18 and 50 stm then. Excited!
Graet video! Please help me. Which one am I to get for my brand new 80d? the 18-135mm, or 50 mm1/8? It would be used for model photography, body and portrait too,
If you are mostly doing portraits, go for the 50mm.
I like all of your reviews, any chance to review Canon 24-105 ii with 80D?
I've had a hard time getting the 24-105. It was initially just released in kit.
The 24-105 is not suitable for APS-C cameras
Is the nano USM as quite as the stm 18 135 video? Great video as always:)
Definitely.
Thanks man great video Im thinking 80D over the M5
Well what's a great camera lens to buy since this isn't a great lens Mr. Abbott?
Thank you for the reply!!
I like the Nano USM lens better across the board, personally.
For outdoor portraiture, is this lens good enough or should i buy Canon 50mm f 1.8 lense?
What else are you going to do with the lens? If you are just buying for portraits, then buy the 50mm. If you are going to do a lot of general purpose work and want the flexibility of the zoom range and just occasionally doing portraits, buy the zoom
@@DustinAbbottTWI Dustin Abbott can't decide between canon ef-s 24mm f/2.8 and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. Which one would you choose by considering the fact that I'm going to be using on a crop sensor?
Excellent review !! Whc one do you suggest between 18-135 STM and 18-135 Nano USM for an average user for good quality Images and Video !!
+Chaitu Gadiraju The autofocus is so much better in the 18-135. So much better. I'd go for it based on that alone.
+Dustin Abbott Thank You for the advice... You mean 18-135 Nano USM ?? or is it New 18-135 STM ??
Chaitu Gadiraju
Sorry - the Nano USM, which is the new lens.
+Dustin Abbott Yup !! Thank You so much..!! Ordered one with EOS 80D ! :)
I'm a fan of the 15-85mm. I think it is one of Canon's best consumer grade zooms.
(And sorry I have posted this question on the other video as well)
I would probably hang onto this lens. It's slightly better in terms of focus speed and perhaps image quality.
Thank you!
Thank you.
I think the balance will be fine. This isn't an overly heavy lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for your input and quick reply.
Excellent detailed review.. It's a pleasure o watch your review.. Waiting for Canon 70-300 IS nano USM (if canon launches it someday) 😀
+Arnab Sarkar Now that would be a great application of this technology!
Good review dustin
I want to ask you how fast of the autofocus on eos M3 ? Is it same as native ef-m lenses ?
Also how good of IQ compared to tamron 18-200 for eos m mount ?
+smart games The focus is very fast, and I would say as fast as native mount lenses. I haven't directly compared those lenses, but I would say the IQ is probably pretty close.
+Dustin Abbott good news thanks for help
Fantastic review. Quick question - have you tested/owned the 10-18mm STM from Canon? If so, when it comes to overall sharpness, is there a difference?
Thanks!!
I haven't used the 10-18mm, James, but I would expect the IQ to be a bit better from the 10-18. It covers a much small focal range.
True. I do think I am going to sell it and get the 18-135mm. Thanks for your advice - it's really helpful!
Thanks a lot for this one! Helped me a lot about this Nano USM. I was really upset cause I thought the kit that comes with D80 was the old school USM...
+You Ren Far from it. Nano USM is pretty awesome.
Thanks for the feedback.
Nice review, we subscribe :) Thank you
Thank you!
Excellent info, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
well i want to buy this camera lens i like fast things like auto focus that would be an awesome idea lens to add to my bag
Enjoy
Keep it on unless you're on a tripod. You'll get your most reliable results just keeping it on.
Glad to help out.
@isaactruman what do you have on your camera now? What do you wish you would have bought instead on this 18-135?
I am buying the 77D canon. I have 2 deal. The first one is with the usm nano 18-135 lens and the other is with the previous generation 18-135 stm kit lens. The previous kit is 220 $ cheaper . Which one should i go for is thr usm nano worth thr extra 220 $ ?
That depends on your shooting priorities. The nano USM is faster and quieter, but the image quality isn't much better.
Dustin Abbott quality isnt better means its the same as the stm or not as good as the stm in video quality.
It's slightly better in both still and video, but not by a large margin.
I would definitely say the latter. the 18-200 is a much older lens and will have disappointing autofocus on your new camera.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks a lot.
How do u compare this lens with a tamron 18-200 vc lens? Quality of photography wise
The two lenses aren't terribly different optically. They both fairly good but not exceptionally good.
I wish all reviews on RUclips were like this!
+Aydin Zahedi I might be out of a job then!
Fair enough!
I give you 5 stars for this review. amazing.
+Chantha Thoy I'll take them. Thank you!

l wanted the USM version, but last year found a pristine STM for 120usd on Ebay.
Hard to pass on a price like that!
I've got the original Sigma 18-200 stabilised lens and I'm very unhappy with the image quality. It seems incapable of producing sharp images. Do you think this lens is a good replacement as a walkabout lens?
It will definitely be an upgrade.
Thanks. I guess I'll have to have a look at the lens then, and the 80D too. My 7D is a great camera but the technology is way out of date.
I wouldn't say the image quality is any better, for sure. You are more than doubling the focal range. Your biggest plus is that it isn't much worse.
@@DustinAbbottTWI WOW....I was hoping for as good as or maybe a bit better....LOL
As a rule of thumb, it is very, very rare that a lens with a larger zoom range has better image quality. There are that many more compromises involved to make it work.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I had a friend recommend the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 Contemporary DC Macro OS HSM
or Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 instead of this lens.
If you are looking for budget, it is hard to beat the 55-250 STM. That's a lot of bang for the buck.
Dustin Abbott thanks for your reply. Will it be a waste of money if I buy both these Lenses?
I don't think so. They really have two different purposes.
Dustin Abbott Thanks
I want to get rid of my 3 year old 18-135mm kit lens, will it be a good decision to go for the new 18-135mm?
That depends. If you expect a huge image quality increase, then the answer is no (its a bit better), but everything else about the lens is vastly improved - particularly the focus!
Hmmm! Thank You Dustin.
Great channel. Thanks for sharing.
+Crash Taylor My pleasure.
excellent review!
Thanks!
I have an 80d. What ef lens would be comparable or better in image quality? Thanks in advance.
I would think this lens is just as good.
Thank you, this was extremely helpful!
Glad to help out!
Canon has also announced 77d with 18-135 USM kit lens. Wonder if this is a non USM that they offer? Any clues?
It would be this lens.

Definitely the nano-USM
@@DustinAbbottTWIsir for sharp auto focus(photography)??? Usm or Nano usm???

+Da CajunAsian Thank you very much
Great review thank you
You're welcome
Dustin Abbott
Hi Dustin, well, if you think at last here into germany one can get the "old" (2013) 18-135 STM into mint condition for around ~200 EUR, but the suggested price for the "new" 18-135 NanoUSM is 599$, or 470 EUR at the cheapest seller currently into germany, and the older STM Version is currently 285 EUR as for today - we're talking here by no means for just 50 bucks difference, but almost 200 EUR, which is a lot, considering Canon doesn't have had upgraded the Optics into the 18-135 NanoUSM.
(for FF Users)
Just my thought of view.
regards,
Marc
+Marc P. No problem, Marc. I'm going by the US retail prices. There is always variances in prices from region to region, and you can always get older lenses for less than their MSRP. My review makes it clear that I'm disappointed the optics aren't more improved, too, but I do think the new focus system is a huge leap forward.
Yes, i do think this new AF focusing system would sooner or later been integrated into the upcoming L Lenses.
Marc P.
You are probably right, particularly if video servo AF (DPAF) is in the next generation of FF bodies.
Great review and professional i will add....
awesome video thx I'm sold !!
Enjoy the lens!
Hi What is your best choice between the “nano” and the 18-150 eos-m (M50 owner) - video only -? Tanks
If you are using the M50, then go for the 18-150. I really like that lens, and native mount usually bests adapted for video.
Dustin Abbott Tanks. Will follow your gently and precious advice 👍🏻🙌🏻
Thanks Dustin always well done ........
My pleasure!!
question: is an ND variable filter worth for the 18-135 usm nano on outdoor 12.00 shooting? or could just compensate by zooming and going f. 4 - 11 ??? Thanks Dustin :-)
That's a question only you can answer - it is your money. An ND filter helps, but there are other approaches, too.
Dustin Abbott I'll let you know after more testing and stressing out the lens.... was thinking on getting an ND for the canon 50mm f/1.8 stm.... I guess that is the case where you can't do much with loads of light and blurred backgrounds at 1/50 100 ISO 24fps... thanks!
It's a shame they didn't upgrade the optics after investing so much effort into improving the build nd technology.
Do you know if Canon will make more lenses that will work with the PZ-E1? Thanks
+Antonio Pulido I don't know that. I was surprised that the new 70-300 IS II wasn't compatible. Disappointing.
I recently bought a canon 80D and I bought a 18-135mm IS STM along with it, instead of buying the kit... My question is: Is nano USM better than STM? ... I bought the STM because I wanted to make videos as well
+Mikail Music Nano USM has the strengths of STM for video but much faster AF speed
Dustin Abbott it means that I should have bought the 80D with the kit lens :/
do you think the 55-250 efs is stm is better at the telephoto end?
Yes it is.
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS Nano USM would be more resonant for APS-C users.
I agree. That's a lens that Canon definitely needs to make!!
How does this lens compare to the Sigma f4 24-105mm?
I can't really comment as I haven't reviewed that lens - though it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. The Sigma is the sharper lens, but it's also much larger and heavier and not as good a focal length on APS-C
Thank you for your answer and your time. I am looking for a lens that is sharper than the EF-S 18-135 IS Nano USM as I have been disappointed in it's sharpness. What about the Canon 24 -105? The focal length is not an issue for me as I have the Canon EF-S 10 -18mm.
is this lens is ok for birding or wildlife for shooting from longer distance ..i intend to buy this
The focus speed is fantastic. Image quality is okay, but not exceptional.
iim currently using canon powershot sx 60hs for my wildlife and birding and im currently looking to upgrade to 80d ..i dont know the comparison of shooting long distance birding between bmy bridge cam and this lens
can u tell me and just compare between canon sx60hs fixed lens and 18 to 135mm for wildlife
Murugan Ashvin
I'm afraid not. I'm not familiar with the SX60 image quality.
For longer distances I would go with the 70-200 F4L, or maybe the newer 70-300 II.
is this quieter than the 18-135 STM?
Definitely.
