    Hi, thanks for the comparison,
    But i don't understand how the 24-105 at f/8 has the same luminosity as the 18-135 at f/4, does it mean a picutre at exactly same parameters between the lenses will be much more brighter on the 24-105 ?
    thanks

    Hi! I am planning on buying a canon 80D. I will mainly use it for video, and I wonder what lens is the best for me. The 80D is known for very good dual auto focus, and I wonder if one of those lenses are better at AF than the other ome. If someone could help me out, it would be highly appreciated!

    According to what you showed in this video my thoughts is for the price gap between these two lenses there is less than a slight edge that separate them and I was considering to invest in the 24-105 but except the build quality I am so disappointed from is overall performance :( I would expect a bigger difference in image quality; that's a shame for canon when you think about the price! but anyway thank for sharing this video and your thoughts on it. thumb up

    So I have a Canon 70D with the 18-135 lens and I got this camera kit to start making cinematic films should I stick with the 18-135 or upgrade to the 24-105 or just save my money and buy a glidecam?

    • @JeremyGalloway
      @JeremyGalloway 7 лет назад

      If you're shooting cinematic films, I would just invest in more lights and keep using that 18-135. The sharpness is very similar, but 24mm is not very wide on a Canon 70D.

  • @Y2Drifter
    @Y2Drifter 2 года назад +2

    I have both lenses and EF 24-105 L IS USM is heavy, it slides in to zoom by itself, and at zoom is not sharp at all. The price is totally out of this world and all you get in return is red ring on the lens indicating you paid a lot for it. The EF-S 19-135 is just as good, actually sharper at full zoom and a for lot less $$$$ including less weight !

    • @kh8189
      @kh8189 3 года назад

      There is not. EFS lenses usually produce an image circle that isn't large enough to cover the entire sensor even if you found a way to attach it.

  • @joshdavidian

    The STM 18-135 is silent when autofocusing. The 24-105 isn't. I don't do much zooming while filming so the jerky STM zoom ring is fine for me. I'm using a Canon C100 and the image quality is still great on the 18-135.

    • @neverlosehopekeepsendinglo4284
      @neverlosehopekeepsendinglo4284 5 лет назад +1

      Both lenses come in the STM version. STM = silent. Both come in the non-STM version. Non-STM = noisy on video. The sound variable is STM.

    • @lb7144
      @lb7144 Год назад +1

      The 18-135mm STM is awesome on the C100. I have the MKII with the 18-135mm STM and all of the STMs are quiet. You cannot beat the Sigma AF 18-35mm f/1.8 in sharp images on the C100. The Sigma AF 17-50mm f2.8 OS also provides great images. The Sigmas AF are louder than the STMs. You can overcome that with a good shotgun mic.
      My favorite feature about the Canon STM lenses on the C100 MKII is the autofocus facial lock. They do bite in low light so keep a pancake Canon STM 24 & 50mm in your pocket. The pancakes don’t allow for facial lock but the regular dual pixel AF works just fine.

    If I have the 18-135 for the Canon Rebel t4i is there any point to getting the 24-105 or should I look for a different type of lens?

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng  9 лет назад +1

      The wide end of the 24-105 at 24mm can be quite tight for crop sensors. If you're looking for a better standard zoom you can look into something like a Sigma 17-50 F2.8.

      I use the EF-S 18-135 IS STM on my Canon C100 mk2 and the autofocus and stabilization make no noise at all when working. This video was shot with the lens on my C100 mk2 with autofocus on. ruclips.net/video/ERg4y1Q4Tck/видео.html

      @lb7144 Год назад +1

      Ditto
      I also have a C100 MKII and use the 18-135mm STM as it’s AF is super fast and quiet. I have the 24-105 (L) and it’s not bad but the dual pixel AF on the C100 MKII works well with the STMs.

  • @maxrockbin
    @maxrockbin 9 лет назад +8

    Your sharpness tests in Lightroom show F/4 for the 18-135mm but F/8 for the 24-105mm which pretty kills the test. DXO mark has the 24-105mm slightly higher rated, but in their sharpness graph they're amazingly close. Maybe the 18-135 is slightly sharper even at 50mm. It seems like there's little justification except the constant F/4 for paying up for the 24-105mm. EXCEPT: Because it's a kit lens for full frame, you can find some great deals where it is being sold as white box - removed from the kit. About half price at Abes of Maine now (9/30/14). Probably still not worth it if you already have the 18-135 - but maybe if you're deciding between the 2.

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng  10 лет назад

      If you're going for long-term serious photography, I would not recommend the 18-135. The 24-105 would be a good choice but of course, there are many alternatives out there that you can also take into consideration :)

    • @ErJuli1Piano
      @ErJuli1Piano 10 лет назад

      Probably if you have the money for the 24-105 you should get the 17-55 cause it has same image quality as the L while being one stop brighter and having a wider zoom range while still being enough for bokehlicious photography

    How is the 24-105 comparing to the stm ?

    • @zy_cheng
      @zy_cheng  9 лет назад

      Luis Miguel Silva STM was designed for video AF. For AF the STM is smoother. However if you're gonna do any MF at all, the STM will be a nightmare to focus with.

      as a user of 18-135 for more than a year...f3.5 is a shit, image is sharp from F6.3 sometimes F7.1 and this is bloody dark! L series allow you to have sharp image from F4! thats a massive diffrence

  • @snapplepie1267
    @snapplepie1267 8 лет назад +6

    24-105 f/4 L is pointless... only if you have an APS-C DSLR. 1.6x crop factor means 24-105 is 38-170 equivalent and 38 is by no means wide angle... personally if i wasn't using full frame i would pick the 18-135

    • @skakdosmer
      @skakdosmer 8 лет назад +1

      Agree.

    • @JeremyGalloway
      @JeremyGalloway 7 лет назад

      I wish I had a full frame so I could have the 24-105, which is imo a much more practical range on full frame than 18-135 offers on crop. Also, the aperture drop on the 18-135 kills me. I would much prefer something like a 16-70mm constant f/4 or f/3.5 on crop!! That seems like a much more similar experience like the 24-105 offers on full frame.

    • @ToxictheOGbiral

      GamerAtHertz I think you're confused! The aperture of a lens has nothing to do with the size of the sensor! F4 remains F4 and so on... Go read a bit before criticizing someone's video. I agree there was some flaws in the comparison, but that was not one of them!

  • @AronMCraft
    @AronMCraft 10 лет назад +3
