I’m enjoying this episode of the series “man’s frustration with car grows with his hair”
When you get to the diff, a Jeep Dana30 Detroit style Aussie Lokka centre will fit. I use a Volvo diff in my 11.1 sec gasser with that lokka centre and it’s still going strong
Yup, 1030 or 1031 volvo diffs are a Dana from factory so lots of potential and even stock they take a beating.
The floor board weld is ok can't see it from my house, Colorado, USA
Owned 2 Soarers, they most definitely are NOT sports cars - they are most definitely GT's -really good GT's actually. Pretty much all of them you see nowadays though are driven by young guys who have fucked them up with dumped suspension and big bore exhausts because they think they are sports cars, which is probably the last stage of their lives before their engines end up in old Soccer Mum volvo saloons. That welding in the floor - still ten times better than what I could do!
The Swede's back! Keep em' updates coming and keep it Aussie good! 🏁🏁🇸🇪🇸🇪
I see the Hillclimb Barina is still around! Hopefully we get more episodes on it at some point!
Loving the Volvo build! Good job with the welding! Having a crack!
I have been waiting for this monster to run, can't wait to see it running, good job guys
Whoa! I have been messing around with 240s for the last 20 years, and I have never seen a tank that bad....
Same here. must be ethanol in there that collect water or something?
I woke up to 7 new upload notification's in the old inbox this morning, and it was straight to Scotty, keane and Carnage. Another awesome episode boys and i'm seriously digging this ripper project and can't wait for more. Hey Keane lucky Scotty didn't have you clean the old petrol tank, hahaha. Thanks heaps boys.
Gotta love the mystery flappy hole in the floor! As some of the guys mentioned below watch out for the restriction from the banjo fitting on the fuel pump. I'd consider flipping the flow to have the filter before the pump but with a new tank it won't be a problem. Keep up the great work Scotty.
Love your work scotty, love the content :) ... Cheers ... :)
Hi Scotty , i like the way you do things, very much the way i would do it. All your videos are entertaining and good to watch.
As i have said before, love the carnage videos.... keep them coming : )
Good work Scotty. Good content, and no bs. 👍🏻
Full points to our unsung hero Ken the Kleaner that manifold looks fantastic
Lovin' the build so far, Scotty! I've got a YB Cosworth powered 1967 Ford Corsair 4 door sedan (Retro Ford mag March 2008 issue cover car) mid rebuild. Back on 8x13 Revolutions, flat floors, 6 link etc. Now 520bhp (gotta make it look period on the outside at least)! Also have a 1974 Vauxhall Viva 2 door sedan HC with 19,480 miles from new... all the original 1256cc junk went in the bin! Fully welded in fia cage in & a small block Chevy & 8.8 inch Mustang rear end going in soon... all riding on the original 4 inch pcd 13 inch steelies banded out to 8 inch wide! No point in half measures, eh? Cheers. Leigh.
Maybe try the old chain cleaning method for the tank. If clean petrol and the chain doesn't work enough then a nice bit of swimming pool acid one to one with water and the chain will get it spotless. Bunging the holes is always the fun part though ;)
Hi Scotty, loving the Trolvo. I have recently replaced the fuel tank etc in my GT. Shame you have already ordered the parts as I have a spare brand new sender unit at home you could have. Only problem is that it doesn't have the in-tank pump fittings.
Giving this video a thumbs up just for putting the grommet in!
Dammit man, you've welded up the lingenberry disposal flap.
Oh no! I forgot about the lingenberries
@@lvomotor I'm a swedish idiot too, and that is correct. Even googled it to be sure.
it's the felony hole ....
Lingonberry disposal flap is atleast more plausible then Lada ice fishing flap.
Keep up the good work.
I love these cars and also these engines... The perfect combo 👍🏻👍🏻
Anyone commenting on how you do things is just releasing their jealousy and they probably pay someone to service their car for them.
Or they don't even have a car.
It's like working on a jeep, two steps forward, four steps back. Keep going Scotty but keep your sanity.
After watching the 4 episodes, I must congratulate you on your patience with this project. There were at least five occasions when I'd have set about the 240 with an axe.
I have those days too
Keep up the great work guys
Dont feel bad Scotty, Youd be surprised at how many Volvo engine swap projects never get finished lol
Theres a Barra 740 drift car job thats almost done but most of em either run out of money, talent or their man buns catch fire a few too many times and they quit.
Good job Scotty 👍. Should pluck the 2 jz and slot it into the Val wagon sitting next to the volovent. Would be something different and as you said yourself the fuel tank would be in better nick, love the vids mate keep them coming the different content works mate👍👍
Cant wait to see it finished! :D
the hole in the floor is a common 240 hack, the top bellhousing bolts are an absolute pain to get to so alot of people cut a hole in the footwell to access the bolts from inside the cabin.... its not stupid if it works ...right ;)
Hey Scotty, I'll admit something. I have referred to this many times for myself with Crustida so thankyou bro. But I will say this, Kian inadvertently opened the Pandora's box with one line. "Australia says NO!" What he didn't realise is while Australia says no, Maf said yes and went a bit crazy. You'll see soon. 😉
I've got a 2jz sitting here and I'm not afraid to use it.
@@STREETMACHINETV Hmm, we both have similar thoughts. I heavily considered cheating by buying Goleby's 7sec engine for $9000 the other day. 😂🤣
A fuel tank can sometimes be cleaned by putting a bucket full of gravel and rattel it around a while .
I've seen a bike tank done in a cement mixer.
Then sealed up with a brand name product all good
I think this one is past that?
@@STREETMACHINETV I did say sometimes
If you're keeping the stock twins for now, I'd advise getting rid of the cast iron Y pipe that sits between both turbos. They seem to be a big restriction. On my daily driver JZZ30 Soarer, I've got split dump pipes that replace the Y pipe and it seems to have helped a fair bit.
They're only there for a short time, then we're going single
Yep split dumps have been able to pick up 20hpatw on high flowed twins through a built a340 same boost, same tune 3" straight pipe only change was dump.
That's because the Soarer Y pipe is different. I actually show you the difference between my JZA70 Y pipe fitted and the JZZ30 Y pipe that I have. 😎👍
JZA70 = 76mm outlet
JZZ30 = 71mm outlet
@@MafiaboysWorld and jzx90? Its still bad flow design tbh.
@@asjmpickle The others are Mia like the JZX90, I agree totally, but the JZA70 and JZX81 have a different Y pipe design. 👍 It's a little heavier but I'd rather have the extra 5mm and a completely better flow design. I show it all in the first episode of my show when I introduce the car. 😎
Im in America mate great videos I have 240 wagon L.S3 cheap power do like your engine
It certainly goes well with the little 1jz
maibe they made the hole to get to the transmission / starter bolts
as for cleaning the tank , strap it to sumting that rotates the tank (cementmixer?), fill it with some sharp stuff like rocks or polishin marbles (needs to be heavy enough to slam around a little ) fill with some derusting agent so the rust will float to the top close everything off and let it roll around for a while , after that just steamclean the inside let it dry and use some tanksealant
if the hole in the tank from the breakers isnt as big you can solder a copper disk over it with a realy big and heavy duty electric soldering iron
Hi guys love your channel keep it up, just wondering why you don't use pressure washer to clean parts, saves a lot time and work well
Why not get a racing fuel cell and upgrade? You arent doing a restoration so no need to get a proper volvo fuel tank. I got a feeling it'd be easier to get a fuel cell than a volvo tank anyway.
Old fuel tanks that had fuel left in them are notorious for being a internally rust clad nightmare. 😉🙂👍👍
Respect to Scotty for listening to people in the comments section.
Don't let the guys over at Bad Obsession Motorsport hear you say your going to use a bracket without modifying it, they'll have a heart attack.
Scraping the inside of that fuel tank with the wrecking bar made me super nervous. If that had thrown a spark things would have gone south real quick!
Hmm, interesting point
Love it Scotty
To clean the tank, use 10 ltrs or more of white vinegar and add to the tank, use a couple of lengths of varying sized chain, seal the tank and shake the shit out of it, allow to sit a couple of hours (varying the resting position), repeat this process till rust is gone.
Drain the tank of your brown soup mix, not forgetting to take a big whiff of the vapour and cough your lungs out for the next 5 mins, then remove the chains.
Wash out the tank with warm soapy water and dry with hair dryer, the now clean metal inside tank will start oxidizing fast so best done on a warm day, it will also help with drying the tank quicker, you can also use the exhaust from a car, this has the added advantage of slowing down any oxidization by displacing the oxygen in the tank.
Seal tank using Red-Kote fuel tank liner.
*Disclaimer* Im sure this method probably isn't the best or most effective way to clean a fuel tank but i've personally used this method on the many early falcons ive owned over the years and always had great results with no issues.
Forget the naysayers just keep doing what you do well and what you know thankyou Scotty
Come one Scotty - if you ran the igniter wiring through the smaller firewall hole, next to the Haltech wiring, than you could say it was designed that way....!
Few nuts and bolts in that tank and a good shake then POR15 tank sealer would’ve sorted it but hey if you can get a new tank then why not?
i had a Volvo like this once. i jacked it up to change out a flatty, let it back off the jack and then my steering rack started pissing out and my water pump started leaking simultaneously. i no longer have a volvo.
Sorry for being so picky about debris getting into the intake I just don't want you to junk the motor Scotty.
Hi Scotty is there any chance you could do a tour of your workshop in Dandenong
Bit late now to mention it but have you tried Carson and Murphy at Doncaster? Huge depth of knowledge and they use to keep plenty of spares.
Berry motor group in Mitchem took them over a few years ago.
That cut flap in the firewall is for access to the starter motor bolts...pain in the ass to access starter motor on a soarer I guess even worse on the Volvo
There is plenty of room I reckon
is there any reason you guys didn't upgrade the coils to yaris coilpacks if you went full standalone? no igniter and bs needed
Cool build Guys, could not help but notice that orange Valiant safari wagon, maybe a future project car ?
Future project
@@STREETMACHINETV Cool
Absolutely ridiculous that wrecking yards pierce tanks and they still expect you to pay them for that tank.
They have to drain the fliuds. They're not going to charge for a peirced tank
@@bridged13b Every wrecker I have been to want to charge for petrol tanks they pierced. There are other ways of draining tanks.
You will probably find someone at some stage cut the firewall to access the bolts for the starter motor.
... from experience with 1j starters in non factory fitted cars
welding sheet metal is a prick! i found the best settings are a low wire speed & on the amp setting on the main amp setting set it low as possible and on the "fine tune" amp crank it up (ish) that will spray the metal on to the surface and you wont get as much pen (still a prick welding sheet metal though)
BTW thats still a nice looking welder lol
It's a bloody great welder.
@@STREETMACHINETV yes still waiting for you to get back to the workshop so you can let me know what it is lol
@@GTFORDMAN oh yeah sorry, forgot sbout that.
i bought a wrecker fuel tank with hole punched through, had a patch welded in, but on completion had the idea that a DRAIN BUNG could have been welded in it's place.
something to think about for the future
The Volvo actually has a factory drain bung
Can't wait for the next episode... Any idea when it will be released?
Coming soon
Is it possible to get a custom fuel cell made to ur spec
you can get some flexible cleaning brushes 4 of them for $7 AU, be well worth cleaning the ports and manifold as much as you can!
liking the hair cut
Don't forget to wash and polish the Volvo when you are finished!
It will happen, no point until we finish rubbing ourselves all over it
RE. The hole in the floor, it's a choo choo shoot, to let all the turbo noise into the cab.
They might have cut that piece back to get at one of those stubborn starter or bellhousing bolts. :)
What is the type of fluid you are using in the parts washer and is it water or solvent based?
Water based
I am just wondering - should the fuel filter be before or after the pump? My 'layperson' thought would be before the pump and so to therefore protect the pump from debris - but - could the filter before introduce 'turbulence' into the pump and cause cavitation (or something similar)? Have a nice day all.
The pre-filter before the in tank pump
AH - HA - I guessed you had it covered. HA - and yes - I probably type before watching things in full. Thanks
Probably a good thing to have taken the tank out. And had a good look inside.
Nasty nasty. 🤔🤨😳🚗
When are you fellas gonna start the ve Val
o what a feeling
almost looks like how i used to build cars ;)
At this rate the trolvo will run 10’s before the taxi haha
Top tip for you, spit on the knifeblade before you cut hoses ;) it will cut rubber hoses like hot butter.
Really?
@@STREETMACHINETV Sure, try cutting a dry hose, just like the fuel line you cut under the Volvo, then try to spit on the blade, maybe rub some on the hose and try to cut it. love the car, have one of my own ;)
Works on radiator hoses aswell
Can you tell me what that black shifter is? I use bahco shifters for line work but that looks interesting..
The Spanner?
Looked like a shifter? Black one you tightened up a fitting on either the filter or pump with
@@jimmyandtommy1 it's made by Raceworks ,very handy
Cheers!
Whats that valiant wagon in the shop?????
Something that we're doing with the guys at Rustoleum Motospray soon
There’s probably some guy in Australia’s that’s a life member the Volvo club that has a dozen of those fuel tanks sitting around. Have you tried calling the clubs?
Probably but we've already ordered a tank and it'll be nice to have a totally new fuel system
Also voldat in Moorabbin or berry motor group in Mitchem.
next time you have a massive gap and you need to fill em.. go get some welding wire, crack the flux off. and use the wire to fill the gaps ;)
Most people bore out ports but here we vaccum ports
This car is trolling you!
I'm pretty sure it is
@@STREETMACHINETV I'm Swedish and this is one of the more interesting shows I've seen lately, more volvo plox!
@@lvomotor welcome aboard
This car has much more credibility than that shit-box Monaro that's being rebirthed. Even after your horrific welding..
Love the last bit Scotty,
Are for F++k sake.
Is the hole in the floor for transmission clearance?
Nope, heaps of clearance
@@STREETMACHINETV maybe it was from pre engine swap days changing plugs on some of that euro stuff can be tricky :)
Wtf is this shit... I need to know if my Holden parts are genuine!!!!
Love ya Scotty 😉🤣
When is Lowndsey giving the Trolvo a shakedown run? 🤔😁
Fuel tank most likely ruined by E10 fuel
Possibly
I wanna know how they made their intro 😂
Run a surge tank in the boot probably be easier to do
It's a factory EFI car, no need for that
Keanne be like "what did your last slave die of" 😂
was that 10 or 15 minutes?
just get one of those drop tanks they use on a torana it might need a few mods but at least it will make the back end of this volvo look like it means buisness
LOL
I keep checking when is the 5th episode going to show up guys!?
Probably next Friday
@@STREETMACHINETV can't wait 💚
You already wounded me with the suspension and brakes boys, the cat food diet is real. That's why all my work this week has cost me a grand total of $0 cause that's all I can afford until I can pay for these brakes and sway bar!! 😐🤷
My most recent problem was ECU related. That Haltech2500 gave you such a leg up and I was STRESSING OUT over it. I'm not paying Goleby $5K+, nope, get F'd. But I finally found my own solution. Phew. 😎👍 That final piece of the puzzle was needed so now I have a complete roadmap engine wise for Crustida to take that swedish meatball down. 😈
So, I only need to buy replacement/maintenance items off Goleby now for reliability like changing that disgusting water pump I showed you all, nothing off him in performance, that whole menu is yours my friend. 👍
Mafiaboys World , You are still going to get smashed by Scotty and the Trolvo.
@@MJTAUTOMOTIVE Well duh, that bits mentioned in the first 20 seconds of The Maf Garage, that I'm gonna get f'n destroyed here. 😉 But atleast I'll have tried and done it with my own blood, sweat, tears and money while taking you all along the journey of building my car. So long as I make it to the start line at RockyNats to race, that's my mission accomplished for the car. 👍
Racing Scotty and meeting Telf and the SM boys is a bonus, a cherry on top but even if I don't race Scotty, I still get to race at RockyNats and as a local, that's all I ever wanted, to tear it up legally past The Heritage and unless you live here, you wouldn't understand what I mean anyway. 😎👍
@@MafiaboysWorld , Dude it was a G up. I think it's great what you are doing. Don't take it the wrong way. With the budget and what you have to play with I think it will be great. I am looking forward to more updates from your side of things.
Have a Great Long Weekend.
Cheers Mark. 👍
@@MJTAUTOMOTIVE 🤫 I gotta be on my best behaviour here or I have to spend a night in the 🐨 suit in Telf's rape dungeon, them's the rules. 😉 You can have me being an ignorant jackass troll and ram my ass on other car channels, like Fullboost, MCM, Skid Factory and especially my own. 😁
@@MafiaboysWorld , all good Mate. I will leave that well alone.😂😂😂
FER FOX ACHE! xD
I WANT TO SEE SKID!
So do we
Cocky shit welds are mint Scotty
Looks like someone confused the fuel tank for the septic tank 🤢
So you lost 2 out of 8 injectors in the MX5 and you're going to risk reusing the rest?
Hey, they already have them, give em a try that saves money. If they don't work, THEN you buy new ones. Us old car builders were recyclers way before it was cool.
( we are also tight arse's )😃👍
@@burniezarsoff4118 Bit different with Turbo engines, if the injector lays down it turns that cylinder into a nice oxy/acetylene cutter and torches the piston crown, injectors are cheap compared to losing an engine...
@@IJ-E36 ok cool. I will admit, l don't know much about turbo engines. I have never built one. I have a 400 sb chev in my HQ. That is enough for me.🙂👍
@@burniezarsoff4118 I've lost a couple over the years, as I said injectors are cheap insurance, at a bare minimum they should have them cleaned and flowed before using them, the two that failed may just have been closed with crap..
@@IJ-E36 maybe a result of a rusty old fuel system? (Cough cough.....trolvo).😆
It fascinates me that anyone would put a non Volvo engine in an old Volvo as the original motors are basically indestructible and can be made to go really fast.
We bought it that way but the more I hear about them the more I like the idea of doing a Volvo engine
A soarer is a sports car?
They weigh 1750kg with under 300hp at the flywheel.
A VN commodore is more of a sports car.
Never heard a truer comment 😅
Is it running yet? New video please.
Tomorrow morning
@@STREETMACHINETV sweet!
Fuel cell ?
I'd rather not
you really should have taken the whole engine out from the start and clean it, would have been lot asyer to check whole enginebay from the start.
Probably, but at the time we thought it was going to start fairly easily
Kian (spelling?), wearing gloves would be a good move, I wish someone had made me in my younger days.. De-greaser will damage your skin badly over time. Take it from someone who didn't use gloves, I've got paper thin crappy skin on my hands now that cuts at the slightest bump. I wish I'd been smart enough to use gloves when using any chemicals or working on an oily area. Nitrite gloves cost nothing and are well worth it. :)
Correct spelling, and yeah good advice
Let me know if you ever want to sell the brick
