Thanks for taking the time to slow the process down and breaking it into a few videos for us. Its pretty informative stuff, much better than just glossing over the fact you had to tear down half the engine to do valve springs and oil pump gears!
Valve spings can be done whith the head on. Use that tool to depress the valves and compressed air in the sparkplug hole to keep the valves up. Head studs can also be replaced with the head on. Yes, oil pumps gears are a pita, but are not needed in a street auto not banging off the limiter. $1000 for an oil pump gear set, not worth it, or neede, for a $150 green top.
"SBT" Scotty Barra Taylor, haha, ya'll gave me a giggle when you lifted the thingimy bob off and up came the hand with the adjustable shifter. Everytime I watch an engine rebuild video, I tell myself this knowledge and skillset CANNOT die... Beautiful to watch man and machine both coming together
Brilliant, best video I have seen for illustrating timing chain set up, showing the crank trigger wheel removed really helped me set my timing chain up properly after changing a blown head gasket. I still have to find out why the twin fans only work when the air con is on, I'm picking the CHT (cylinder head temperature) sensor may be faulty, but the temperature gauge operates so I'm not sure. May be the something else.
Finally a you tube engine build video where the head studs are put in after the head is laid in place. Makes life so much easier. Good work Scotty. Though why you wouldn't put in bigger bump sticks in while playing in the weeds still suprises me ;)
For people doing this at home, one mistake he made which caused him some trouble was the screws on the oil pump gears, your best to get an impact are a driver and tap the screw whilst winding out, also when turning the cams to put timing chain back on don't turn them with the bolts on the front, use the correct size spanner on the big casting bosses on the front of the vct mechanisms to ensure you don't snap or overtighten the bolts.
Once again Scotty simply perfect! I am so pumped. Can’t wait to see this rip. Gives me hopes on my build. From real world experience how much can a 2010 FG stock bottom end handle? Thanks for your wealth of knowledge. Cheers
Scotty flossing on me with the Gasket Remover 3000 while I'm stuck with the Gasket Remover 2000 (aka a wire wheel on a hammer drill. 😂🤣). This rebuild has been awesome Scotty. It's given me an idea for a cheap (but stupid) project build in the future. 👍

Really helpful video would love to see you do a ls one as well. as I have plans to buy a ls1 from the wreckers pull it apart and put it back together with better parts to put in my hq. And I also want to do the same with a Barra
Did you leave the timing chain on its correct position on the crank sprocket or did I miss something and you lined up any dots on the bottom as well as the top markers?
Have you increased ring gap? Being gas engine it have minimal ringgap as it wasn't intended for turbo application. Number 1 cause for making windows in engine block
What thickness mls did you use? Do you need to consider the compression ratio for the e-gas engine? Do you need to re gap piston rings for the e-gas? I am getting a lot of different answers from people who have not built an engine.
They are a great engine and once you get your head around the hi tech features they are remarkably simple and easy to work on. In wish the US had got them as well.
@@STREETMACHINETV ya I know. We have a sick 6cyl here called the 3.5 EcoBoost V6 and with a little bigger turbos on it easily make 600hp+! I'm really thinking of putting one in my 70 mach 1 mustang! But if I had access to a barra I'd put one in!
I know bugger all about these Barra engines I will admit that. So where does all the oil sit if it’s not all in the sump like most other engines are? I’m curious I’ve never opened one of these up.
Scotty, what happened to continuity, Episode 1 of the Barra rebuild your Valiant wagon was on the hoist. Yet today (episode 2) it's gone! I thought you took it home some weeks ago, yes??????
@@STREETMACHINETV For some reason, there are people that are so myopic that anyone who does not fit "all-new" parts, and machine every surface is not doing the job properly. As Scotty would know - machining a gasket surface not only lessens the chance of future rebuilds due to material removal, but it also can introduce far more work (and suffering) when tolerances are out of specifications. Ask the guys that get "all the machine work" done on an old V8. And then the inlet manifold doesn't fit. And rocker angles are wrong. And push rods don't fit. And they need to get their pistons relieved. Etc, etc, etc. Sure, Scotty doesn't have all those issues on a Barra, but he is showing what your "average Joe" can do in his garage with minimal effort and time. He isn't changing cams nor tolerances, therefore he can throw it all back together without too much drama - as can some girl or guy at home who has never worked on an engine before.
I just reinstalled cylinder head of my BA falcon lpg ute with 500,000 km's which needed new exhaust valves. I just took the time to polished the block with emery cloth until it was nice and smooth, have had no problem. How much extra work & cost would it have been to do what you say and remove whole engine and machine block?? It is made of thick steel, so how could it deform??? Cylinder Head is alloy.
Love what you’re doing, but just got 1 complaint. What with the background music Scotty? Can hardly hear you talking. Some idiots might be interested in what you’re saying.
I have a really dumb question. I am not a qualified mechanic.. But dabble. What is the rationale behind torquing bolts etc? To me if it's tight and doesn't split or break seals, gaskets.. Should be good enough. Please advise.. Thanks
Alloy (and iron) parts deform when torqued, the design engineers allow for this deformation, so that every thing is aligned just right at a certain torque.
Torquing bolts to the right setting actually stitches the bolt slightly and they stretch gives the right amount of clamping force. Too much and the bolt integrity is compromised, too little and the item may come loose with vibrations and so forth.
I'm struggling with the old plugs. I just think it's false economy. All it needs is one to play up and you'll be chasing a gremlin for an hour or more. Especially using untried coils on an untried, used motor.
It would be very rare to get an embolism by just blowing compressed air on your skin, however if you have a cut opening in the skin it could be a danger. The biggest hazard is with people cleaning things using compressed air, small bits of particles or metal shavings can blow back into your face and eyes at a pretty hefty rate.

Trouble is that to check it on these you have to rotate the engine 36 times - true story

We have a factory FG NA ECU in there but we are swapping to an FG Turbo ECU soon to give us better boost control.
