Pete Rose is the reason I fell in love with baseball, the REDS and Riverfront Stadium. It was 1973 and I was just 5 years old. The Cardinals had come into town and leading off in the bottom of the 1st, the great Pete Rose hit a home run off P Alan Foster. My REDS lost 5-4 that day but the guy, who now had become a hero to a 5 year old- mustard face kid just 8 innings earlier, would be responsible for my lifelong passion with America’s game.

In fall of 1980 I was a sophomore at Drexel University. Living in the dorms, I remember watching the World Series with several student friends. Phillies vs Royals. Pete Rose caught the second to last out in the 9th inning. We were so very excited. When the last out was made, we all went crazy. I went outside to see what was happening, and so many students in the neighboring high rise dorms were yelling and throwing confetti, it look like it was snowing. It was the first time I was in the middle of a city that just won a professional championship game. I'll never forget it.

Everything just clicked afterwards and I took my high school team to win a state championship. If I could, I would go back and lock Pete in Reds Stadium in 1985 so he couldn’t leave to bet, only be able to come out and play baseball. “Banned for life” means the life of Major League Baseball, not the life of the man. It’s the same as a lifetime guarantee for a purchased product. Ex: If K-Mart gave you a lifetime guarantee on the purchase of a blue light being under warranty, it lasts for as long as K-Mart exists on Earth, not for as long as you exist on Earth. (It would be expired by the end of this year because the last K-Mart stores in existence will likely be closed and boarded by then, if they aren’t already).

I was totally captivated, and he soon became "Mr. Everything" to me. From that day on I wanted to be just like Pete. I took his style with me through Little League and onward as I played baseball through my junior high school years in Hot Stove. Pete Rose was a switch batter I became a switch batter, Pete Rose went first to third on a hit to the outfield, I went first to third the same way. I learned vicariously that you NEVER cheat the game and give it 100% just like he did, and the game will reward you with far more than you ever expect. It's an absolute disgrace that he's not in the HOF. Betting has everything to do with having a lifetime ban from baseball, but it has ZERO to do with his baseball accomplishments keeping him out of the HOF. As far as I'm concerned, Pete Rose is a Hall of Famer. PERIOD.

I agree. Pete Rose received his lifetime ban for what he did as a manager, not a player. MLB should have banned Rose in the context of being a manager, but his playing career was over by the time he got banned. Pete Rose the baseball player should be inducted.

MLB played itself, this man was the best of the best, in a sport with well over 100 years of history. And now sports betting is legal. I watched cal ripken, Rickey Henderson, Roger 😢 Clemons, Nolan Ryan,Tony Gwynn, Ken griffey Jr, Pete rose was one of the best to ever do it, and I will never forgive the MLB for excluding a legend. RIP Charlie Hustle. Ty Cobb was a terrible human and he is in the hall, make it make sense.
