I'm grateful bc that fandom has allowed me to deal with the concept of appreciating the work someone produces and being a fan of that work while also acknowledging the very real flaws in the character of the person producing that work... ...we all have to address this issue in life, but being a lifelong rose fan forced the issue at a very young age...

    I grew up loving Pete Rose, but I really hate this narrative. It's like we are basketball fans using the eye test to justify why Kobe is the GOAT, when the statistics say otherwise. In his entire career, Pete Rose was in the Top 10 in WAR twice-- tied for 5th in '73, and 8th in '76... neither of those years was he even the best player on his own team... He was never in the top 5 players in baseball, let alone the best. He averaged 7 home runs per season, and the most he ever hit was 16. His stats dropped off so much while he was chasing the hits record, that his career batting average is .303. Johnny Bench still makes fun of his fielding in the outfield to this day, ie "Sitting back and waiting for a 6 hopper from Pete while a run scores..." Rose played the game the right way. Rose played hard. Rose was not among the greats. I still think he should be in the hall just because he did eventually get the all-time record... but it takes some justification for a guy who's WAR average/162 is 3.6-- lower than Carlos Beltran, Bobby Grich, Lou Whitaker, Don Mattingly, John Olerud, Kenny Lofton, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Keith Hernandez, etc. etc. etc.

    • @Cam23
      @Cam23  13 дней назад

      I'm not sure if you're referring to my narrative, but if you are, I made this video as objective as possible. I never called Pete an all-time great, I merely compiled stats, rankings, and other facts that assemble is career "resume." I would never place him in the upper echelon of MLB players, he's even said himself that many had more talent than him, the effort is what separated Pete from the rest.

    I'm still going to say that Rose was overrated and was much more of a compiler. He wasn't disciplined enough at the plate and 160 HRs is not much considering how many times he batted.
    "Look how hard I'm trying" isn't enough by itself to make a player great.
