You can see why players like ARod and Frank Thomas were all-time greats. Even after their absolutely incredible careers, tens of thousands of at-bats, all the success in the world, they are curious to learn more or see another perspective. That's what true greats do. They have confidence in their abilities and of course an ego but there's also a humility in understanding that you can always learn more or something different that you can use. That's what turns great players into all-time great players.

I had such a crush on him in his day. He was the best catcher. Nothing ever got by him and his batting was unbelievable.
The one who taught me also played pro until his Viet Nam draft number was 3 but he knew Pete’s moves in the box and that really does make you a great batter even if you’re a base hitter and a girl. The way he holds the bat, perfect. It gives your left hand a little somewhere to go when your right hand extends over as you follow through.
Also, often the best pitch you’re going to get is the first pitch so be ready for it when it comes.
I was crushed when he got caught betting. Many guys vet, he just got caught. It was hard watching him pushed out.

Pete Rose autographed a baseball and gave it to my Dad on October 2, 1969 that reads "To Jerry Fields From Pete
Rose & Thanks". For 53 years starting in April 1966 we had front row Braves seats in front of the visitors batting circle. At the final game of the '69 season Pete was battling for the title with Roberto Clemente and Pete was 0 for 3 and Clemente was 3 for 3, percentage points ahead. My dad took a transistor radio to every game so we could listen to Ernie Johnson and Milo Hamilton. As Pete strolled to the plate, Milo came on the radio and said (knowing my dad had the radio) "If anyone down there has a radio tell Pete that Clemente was 3 for 3 and he needed a hit to win the title". We screamed that to Pete who promptly laid down a bunt and beat it out for an infield hit. After the game Pete came up to us and signed the baseball. Funny ending was my dad thanked him for the ball and said he would really like to get a bat from him to which Pete replied: "$hit, I wouldn't give my mother a bat" and walked off.
