I am a Brit of Jamaican parents and have lived in the US for 40 years. Never felt American though and have clung to my Jamaican/British background. There are however, three times I felt I could drape myself in the American flag: The election of Barack Obama, the inauguration of Barack Obama, and the first time I heard the national anthem sung by the late, great Whitney Houston. FROM WIKIPEDIA "The Star-Spangled Banner" was performed by Houston at the original Tampa Stadium for Super Bowl XXV in 1991. Although Houston was singing live, she was singing into a dead microphone, and television viewers were hearing a non-live pre-recorded version of the anthem due to her musical director making her aware of the risks of performing live, including the sound of the crowd, jets flying overhead, and other such distractions from pregame activities.

Whitney Houston's version of the National Anthem has & always will be the best because she took the song seriously. She sings the song straight through & only at the end does she fiddle with the range of the song. So many people, after her continued to unnecessarily experiment with the tempo of that entire super long song. Many singers, professionals & amateur have stated that the National Anthem is hard enough to sing without bells & whistles added due to the many octaves in the song

I remember this very well. Whitney Houston performed the National Anthem before the American Football championship game in Jan. '91. There were even talks canceling the game cause of the war in Iraq that year. Til this day, I dont think there has been a better rendition of the National Anthem than Whitney's. Not only from her talent but the meaning what went on during that time took this rendition to a whole level that pretty much stands alone. And to top it off, the game itself was one of the best championship games ever in American football history.

My family and I (we're a US military family) were assigned to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in June, 1991, just at the end of Desert Storm. When we arrived in Riyadh, there was still smoke coming down from the oil fields in Kuwait that Saddam Hussein had set ablaze. We weren't sure what we would be allowed to take with us, but the two things we wanted to make sure to take with us were the Bible and the video of this amazing performance by the late, great, Ms. Whitney Houston. God be praised, God bless America, and God rest the soul of Ms. Whitney Houston.

Dude she is called "The Voice", she's literally in the Guinness book of world records, her voice is like considered the 7th or 8th wonder of the world. World famous singers like Celine Dione , back stage during an interview, stopped the interview to drag a chair over to the television to turn up the volume to hear Whitney when she out live to perform during her interview. If you hear her songs and see her live performances you'll understand why she is known as "The Voice".

She was never nervous! The stage was her happy place. And quite frankly this was an easy gig for her. You need to listen to more of her songs especially from her first album. Her voice has much more range than this song will allow her to show.
