By the way people will drone on about how this isn't "Live". No Super Bowl rendition of the anthem is done live any more. They have a backing track in case certain mics go out or background noise is too great, any number of technical difficulties can happen. She did her recording in 1 take AND was still singing live anyway as you can tell by the sheen of perspiration Whitney ALWAYS got when she sang live. Also the bulging veins on her neck you don't get by just whispering the anthem into the mic. She was still singing but the back up track IS probably what we likely heard.

I'm 57 years of age, and I remember when she first came out with her first hit 'You give good love' although that year she had won best new female artist and for a song called 'Saving all my love for you', I was instantly in crush love. She was my crush and I swore then she was the one I was looking for. I was like 16/17 ish at the time. She was on a different level than other artist of the time because of that voice and more so her youth. She was barely 20 when she broke out in to stardom(Thankyou Clive Davis). Fast forward a few years later, and after a stint in the Navy, I had come back to New York, and the Giants and Bills just happen to be in the Superbowl that year. It seemed as if everyone was watching and we were all meant to watch this particular Superbowl, as the nation had been gripped by the Gulf War and Recession that had taken hold. When she had performed this, its as if she was performing it for all time and for all of us. We knew it was something special and inside deep down we knew to cherish it as we would never again feel the likes of a performance like ever again. This to me is the greatest Anthem performance ever, and I have seen numerous! This one will always hold a special place in the hearts of those of the time because of the significance of it at the time. This performance since has never been duplicated, and probably never ever will be, ever. What an incredible and beautiful talent gone way too soon. My youthful crush!

The reason why this stands out more than any other, is because what the US was going through at the time. America was at war for the first time since Vietnam, and there was a growing fear that the Soviet Union would enter the fight, and bring about a nuclear exchange. The Super Bowl was even set to be canceled that year.
The nation was concerned for the safety of our soldiers, and the outcome of the war that was going into the ground phase. Many were claiming this to be the end of days. So when Whitney came out, and preformed the national anthem in the manner that she did. She not only calmed those fears, she really united a nation this night.
This is why I think this is more memorable to those around at the time.

I didn’t know there was anyone who doesn’t know Whitney’s music. I Will Always Love You is a must. Be sure to find the video with clips from the movie The Bodyguard starring Whitney and Kevin Costner.

Those are car alarms, not sirens. Fly over by jets causes this.

As great as this performance was, and IMO it's the greatest of all time, her live performance of "All The Man I Need" from "HBO's Live from Welcome Home Heroes" is equally as stirring. Whitney was, and to me remains, the greatest pop singer of the R&R/R&B era.

You guys should check out a video on how the anthem was written. It called "The National Anthem Like You've Never Heard Before"

This was pre recorded and she lip synced it was not live but the recording is and will always be the best version ever heard of the American national anthem and I'm Irish.......
The most amazing voice of all. Time

A great-sounding version but it wasn't live. This was pre-recorded and sounded great but it wasn't done on the day of the Super Bowl . With the Gulf war and everything that was going on at the time, the country had rallied together. Several weeks later that version of The Star-Spangled Banner was released as a single.
It made it to #20 on the Billboard charts. Within the first eight days of its release as a single it sold 750,000 copies..

Yeah thx for the news. It wasn't her decision. She did it always live on her concerts.
